number of deaths since March 2021

LOS Angeles County on Thursday, January 20 reported 102 additional COVID-19-related deaths, the highest number of fatalities reported in a single day since March 2021. The number of new deaths doubled in the past week, according to the LA Department of Public Health. Of the deaths, 90% were among residents who became ill with COVID after December 24, indicating the high likelihood of infection with the Omicron variant. “As deaths often lag behind surges in cases and hospitalizations, we may see an even higher number of deaths in the coming weeks,” the department said in a release. On Friday, January 21, the department reported an additional 65 deaths and 43,091 cases of COVID-19. Of the 65 new deaths

5 things you should know about ‘free’ at-home COVID tests AMERICANS keep hearing that it is important to test frequently for COVID-19 at home. But just try to find an “at-home” rapid COVID test in a store and at a price that makes frequent tests affordable. Testing, as well as mask-wearing, is an important measure if the country ever hopes to beat COVID, restore normal routines and get the economy running efficiently. To get Americans cheaper tests, the federal government now plans to have insurance companies pay for them. The Biden administration announced Jan. 10 that every person with private insurance can get full coverage for eight rapid tests a month. You can either get one without any out-of-pocket expense from retail pharmacies that are part of an insurance company’s network or buy it at any store and get reimbursed by the insurer. Congress said private insurers must cover all COVID testing and any associated medical services when it passed the Families First

MANILA — The public should not deliberately get themselves infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus in order to get natural immunity against COVID-19, the chairperson of the Vaccine Expert Panel (VEP) said on Friday, January 21. VEP chair Dr. Nina Gloriani said those who will contract COVID-19 may indeed get natural immunity but stressed that the infection should not be voluntary or deliberate. She added that a “hybrid immunity” may happen after a vaccinated individual contracts COVID19 and survives. “Pero ano ang sasabihin ko dyan? Mabuti kung ang breakthrough infection ninyo ay mild hanggang moderate siguro, magkakaroon kayo ng boosting ng immunity, pero kung magiging severe ‘yun, hindi ‘yun maganda, so hindi natin titingnan na magpapa-infect

MANILA — The Philippines welcomed the U.S. State Department’s 47-page report on China’s “unlawful” maritime claims, saying this affirms Manila’s 2016 victory before the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. “We welcome the affirmation of the 2016 Arbitral Award by the U.S. State Department’s Limits in the Seas No. 150: People’s Republic of China: Maritime

Claims in the South China Sea,” the Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement on Friday, January 21. According to the DFA, the U.S. report is also “consistent” with the Philippines-US Joint Vision Statement issued last Nov. 16. This joint statement maintained that China’s “expansive maritime claims in the South China Sea are inconsistent with the international law of the sea as reflected in theUnited Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and with the unanimous July 12,

2016 Award in the South China Sea Arbitration…, a decision that, pursuant to the Convention, is legally binding on the Philippines and the PRC.” Last week, the U.S. State Department released a 47-page research paper debunking China’s expansive claims over the South China Sea. “The overall effect of these maritime claims is that the PRC (People’s Republic of China) unlawfully claims sovereignty or some form of exclusive jurisdiction
