Our very own global Bollywood queen, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, popped in at a Number 10 Downing Street reception last week, showing her dedication to support an international children’s cause.

Aishwarya, the goodwill ambassador for the worldwide organisation ‘Smile Train’, which helps children suffering from cleft lip and cleft palate concerns, says she is firmly committed to lending her name to the charity.

For the last 15 years, Smile Train has focused on providing the millions of children around the world born with clefts the same opportunities as a child born without a cleft by providing 100 per cent free cleft lip and palate repair surgeries Their collective aim for the charity is to continue training and funding doctors in over 85 countries across the world to bring new smiles and hope for the future for children with such cleft conditions.

A local sewing club in Bradford have been pushing their sewing machines to the limits this past week, as a huge piece of artwork is arranged to celebrate Refugee Week.

Sewing Bradford, an accredited sewing school based in the heart of the city, began working on the near-thousand piece canvas on Wednesday 4th June.

The team of volunteers were tasked with creating one giant piece of art out of more than 900 drawings gathered from children in Bradford and over in Syria.

The project, which is in conjunction with Bradford based charity Human Relief Foundation and Horton Grange Primary School, will take over fifty hours to complete and has been sewn free of charge by the local business and volunteers.

It aims to show the difference between the Syrian idea of ‘What is Home’ compared to that of Bradford’s, by bringing together artwork from Syrian refugee

children and displaying it side-byside with pictures drawn by children in the city.

A Marketing and Communications Officer for Human Relief Foundation, travelled to Jordan in March to meet the Syrian children affected by their home country’s civil war and explained how the initiative came about.

She said: “In March we travelled to Jordan to take part in humanitarian work. Whilst there we asked the Syrian children to draw their idea of home on a piece of canvas. We were given back pictures of bombs, explosions and tanks.

“When we returned to Bradford we asked children here to draw their own idea of home and they painted a very different picture of life in the city. Their homes are colourful and safe.

There is not a bomb or a gun in sight.

“By bringing together these pictures for refugee week we

hope to raise awareness of just how much Syrian refugees are going through. When child refugees think of home, it tends to be a very different image than we have here.”

The artwork combines almost a thousand squares of miniature art drawn by Syrian refugee children and Bradford pupils from primary schools: Horton Grange, Lidget Green and Copthorne.

Grange Tech also attended the event, bringing with them five young people who were recently given refugee status in the UK. The children spoke to others about their own experiences of living in their home countries and the differences compared to a life in the UK. The canvas, which will be four metres long and two metres high, will be revealed in the city’s refugee week celebration at Kala Sangam on 16th June. The event begins at 10am and members of the public are invited to attend.

Volunteer of the Year Huddersfield optometrist picks up top award in national competition

A selfless volunteer from Huddersfield has been commended for his efforts after topping a nationwide poll to be named ‘Volunteer of the Year’.

32-year-old Kamal Aftab, from Almondbury, picked up 45 percent of the total votes in the Guardian Voluntary Sector Network's ‘Volunteer of the Year Award’.

His role, as a regional youth leader with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA), has seen him balance his professional and personal life with hours upon hours of voluntary work.

Since aged just seven, Kamal says he has been volunteering and helping others and it has always been a passion of his which has continued to thrive throughout his life.

His work over the past 12 months has included sending a team of support workers to

Somerset from Yorkshire during the devastating floods, as well as working on numerous fundraising activities from cycle challenges to tree planting.

It was Kamal’s friend, and fellow AMYA volunteer, Nadeem Ahmed, who nominated him for the award and the local optometrist says he was ‘incredibly humbled’ and ‘proud’ to be picked as number one in the country.

“There were four other nominees in the category and every single one of them deserved to win this award because of their amazing work,” he said.

“It was a nice surprise when I heard I’d actually won and I was absolutely delighted and honoured to just be nominated.

“To be recognised for all of this work we do is obviously very nice but predominantly we are doing it because we believe in God, we believe God created mankind and therefore it is our duty to serve mankind.

“It also helps remove these stereotypes that people have on

our faith. Islam is often portrayed in such a bad way at times and people forget that there are so many good people – it is just that small minority who are getting publicised.

“By doing voluntary actions, benefitting all communities, regardless of faith or skin colour, we help remove these negative stereotypes.”

Kamal says his role as a voluntary regional youth leader often takes up more of his time than his profession does with events occurring every other day.

The award recognised his efforts in helping to better communities across Yorkshire, and even Britain, yet he insists the completion of voluntary work is just as satisfying as individual commendations.

“I am very proud to be named the volunteer of the year but there is much more work to do,” he said.

“For us the work continues irrespective of these awards and we are constantly just trying to play that small part in helping out as many people as possible.”

Student overcomes brain tumour to land ‘dream job’ Despite having to take a leave from his studies after being diagnosed with a brain tumour, the skilled engineer returned to complete his qualifications and land his dream job.

Originally from Oman, Aftab will work at the Birmingham branch of Aero Engine Controls (AEC), part of the Rolls Royce Group, where he will help supply engine control equipment for everything from small auxiliary power units through to the largest turbofan.

Speaking about overcoming the challenges which came with his condition, he thanked his family, friends and tutors for their support.

“I have now made a full recovery, although I struggled with my speech and had to learn to walk again” he said.

“I thought I was going to be out of education for a year but my family and tutors were there to support me all the way.”

He added: “If I can do all of this I think anyone can.

received from my family and tutor's, especially Dr Peter Mather and Dr Violeta Holmes, was amazing throughout my time here at University. The town is so lovely and friendly as are all the people.

“I am now planning on staying in the UK as I have found my dream job and am now married to the love of my life and have a son. I couldn't be happier. And I owe this to my family, the University of Huddersfield and the very special tutors who supported me throughout.”

Following in the footsteps of his father, who is a civil engineer in Oman, Aftab has always had a real passion for electronics, even fixing his own PlayStation One games console when he was a young boy.

Soon after completing his secondary education from the Pakistan School Salalah, in Oman, Aftab applied to the University of Huddersfield’s

engineering degree course.

Despite initial reservations about travelling to the UK due to the struggles of getting work experience, he said he quickly settled into his role at the university and even landed a work-placement in his chosen industry.

He said: “If you are a non-UK national this can often prove very difficult but with the help of the University's placement scheme within the School of Computing and Engineering, in the third year of my BEng degree I took part in a really successful one year work-placement.

“I worked as an industrial engineer for Northrop Grumman Park Air Systems in Peterborough where I got hands on experience in my chosen industry.

“This shows just how successful the University is at helping students get into work during and after their studies.”

Alongside his ‘hands-on’ experience, Aftab was also able to take advantage of the industry standard electronic engineering equipment and facilities available at the university.

Since starting at Rolls Royce, he has already been involved in certification of Trent XWB EEC which has been installed on Trent XWB Engine for Airbus A350.

The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB, specifically designed for operation on the Airbus A350 XWB family, is the most efficient large civil aerospace engine ever produced.

Dr Violeta Holmes who supervised Aftab for his Master's degree, praised him for all his achievements.

“Gaining a Distinction for his MSc Electronic and Computer Based Systems Design course was such a great achievement given that he had to overcome a serious illness during a part of the course,” she said.

“Aftab had the determination and courage to succeed which is inspirational. He is a creative and very capable engineer and so this was recognised by Rolls Royce who have offered him employment.”

A group of students from a Dewsbury high school swapped the classroom for the boardroom earlier this week as they headed to London to confront their MP’s about issues affecting young people.

As part of the ‘My Country, My Vote’ initiative, seven Year 9 students from Westborough High School were invited down to the House of Commons on Monday after succeeding in the regional contest.

Tasked with creating campaigns, related to the British Youth Council’s ‘Make Your Mark’ top five issues as voted by young people, Westborough’s ‘Get Up Get Fit’ team decided to challenge cuts to youth services.

The group campaigned tirelessly in the school alongside other teams, from December 2013 to April 2014, before a vote was held in-house to determine the winning campaign.

Get Up Get Fit were the winners of the final vote and as a result were awarded with a trip to the capital earlier this week.

The teenagers were invited to question a local Member of Parliament at the House of Commons, showing their campaign, in this instance, to Mike Wood – MP for Batley and Spen.

Gayna Goalby, extended schools co-ordinator at Westborough High School, says she was extremely proud to see the group succeed in their campaign and said they thoroughly deserved the recognition.

“The Get Up Get Fit team were really dedicated to their campaign and I really did want to see them win for all the effort they had put in,” she said.

“Cllr Darren O’Donovan (Dewsbury West) came in one day to support the teams with their campaigns and helped with tips and a Q and A session which was really good, and we had politics students from Huddersfield University also visit.

“The boys did really well and have even been invited to appear on a debate television show soon.”

The seven members of the Get Up Get Fit team were: Lohash Lusair- Latif, Husain Aurrangzeb, Hasan Kagzi, Usama Iqbal, Ameer Khan, Mujahid Mamaniat and Aman Raib.

Imran Khan to walk away from Bradford Uni role

Chancellor steps down Eight years after accepting the reins of Chancellor at the University of Bradford, Imran Khan has announced he will step down from his position.

The famed sportsman-turn-politician will leave his role on 30th November after being installed as the fifth chancellor in December 2005, succeeding Baroness Betty Lockwood.

Mr Khan’s role at the place of education had been questioned by some in the past, with his political commitments in Pakistan taking up more and more of his time.

During his time at the helm, one of the 61-year-old’s first duties was to lay a foundation stone for the university’s new Institute of Cancer Therapeutics (ICT).

He has helped forge close links between the ICT and Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Pakistan which remain today.

This partnership has also seen a research student from the hospital in Pakistan completing her PhD in cancer research at Bradford.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bradford, Professor Brian Cantor, spoke of his gratitude of Mr Khan and thanked him for all his support over the years.

He said: “Imran has played a critical and important role for us as Chancellor of the University over an extended period of time.

He has been a truly outstanding

ambassador for the University and a wonderful role model for our students.

“He has awarded degrees to many students here at Bradford, and has also set up one of the fastest growing colleges in Pakistan, Namal College, where students also receive University of Bradford degrees.

“From discussions I have had with Imran, I know he is proud to have served as our Chancellor for the past eight years and is thankful of the support and advice we have given him in setting up Namal College. He looks forward to continuing to work in partnership with the University.

“We are extremely grateful for the support that Imran has given the University over the past eight years. I am confident that his support and our strong relationship will continue into the future.”

Imran Khan said: “It has been my honour to serve as Chancellor of the University of Bradford. This has been a rewarding and informative experience and one that I will cherish.”

A Chancellor acts as a figurehead for the University’s activities and also appeals to, and provides a role model for, the various constituencies the University serves.

These include its students and its local, national and international stakeholders. The University will now begin its search for a new Chancellor as it looks ahead to its 50th anniversary in 2016.

People from Leeds and beyond are being encouraged to jot down the details of their favourite/dream bike ride on the back of a postcard as part of a new exhibition set to open later this month.

Included as part of Leeds City Council’s programme of events and activities celebrating the arrival of the Grand Départ on 5th July, those with a passion for cycling will have the chance to share their heavenly bike ride on one of two different postcards produced by local designer Amy Evans of Tiger Tea Design Company.

Available from local libraries, leisure centres, Leeds Town Hall and the visitor centre at the city’s train station, the postcards can be posted back by using the freepost address on the back of the card, or by dropping them into one of the collections boxes at the town hall by 20th June 2014.

All the postcards will then be collected and a selection displayed together at Leeds Town Hall during the end of June and the beginning of July.

A beautiful achievement

A Bradford college student was celebrating earlier this week after she picked up a silver medal in the regional heats of World Skills UK. Level Two Beauty Therapy student, Mehwish Butt, scooped the accolade in the Intermediate Beauty Therapy Category, after beating off stiff competition at Kirklees College.

Her credible finish means the passionate beautician also qualified for the national finals of World Skills UK where she will compete against beauty therapy students from across the UK at the NEC Birmingham in November.

Commenting on winning Silver in her chosen category, Mehwish modestly remarked: “I didn’t expect to win at all. My tutors had confidence in me and supported and encouraged me all the way.

“I’m now really excited about the next stage of the competition.”

The competition showcases some of the most talented apprentices, employees and learners, who battle it out in competitions ranging from Forensic Science to Floristry to be named the ‘best in their region’ in their chosen skill.

Taking part in the competition enables competitors to build on their skills, test their knowledge against their peers in industry and showcase their potential to employers.

Supportive tutor, Sinead Somers praised Mehwish’s commitment to her learning and said she was thrilled to see her progress into the next round.

She said: “Mehwish came to us with quite a lot of Beauty Therapy experience that she’d gained in Pakistan. It was great to have her on the course and see her blossom into an excellent therapist.”

Mehwish originally studied Beauty Therapy in Pakistan and came to the UK to advance her skills.

Elaborating further Mehwish added: “My tutors have been fantastic and have helped me develop my skills further – I feel I have learnt a lot.

“I now have a greater understanding of the theoretical side of Beauty Therapy, as well as the practical and I’m now more aware of Health and Safety.”

Last year Bradford College students picked up two gold medals in the World Skills National Finals.

A further ten students will be hoping to gain the opportunity of adding their names to that prestigious list once they compete in the regional heats of: Hairdressing, Nail Services, Media Make Up and Advanced Beauty Therapy, later this week.

New Kirklees Mayor

The annual Mayor-making ceremony on 4th June has seen the installation of the new Mayor of Kirklees.

The new Mayor, Cllr Ken Smith, is a longstanding Kirklees councillor with two terms of office - from 1984 to 1992 and then from 1999 until present. His Mayoress will be Cllr Christine Smith.

He said: “After 23 years representing the

people of Kirklees I am honoured to become Mayor for the coming year. I know from experience how many people value the input to the hundreds of voluntary organisations which invite the Mayor to their events each year and I look forward to continually meeting people from all over the area.”

Volunteer this summer

Bradford Council is recruiting a team of 20 volunteers who will greet visitors and provide help for special open days over the summer.

Between Wednesday 6th August and Thursday 11th September Bradford’s City Hall is opening its doors to visitors who will be able to see areas of Victorian splendour not normally accessible to the public.

The Sneaky Peek tours will operate every Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm and on Thursdays from 10am to 12 noon, as part of a long term plan to make the historic building more accessible to citizens of the district.

Helpers are needed to greet the visitors as they walk in through the ceremonial staircase off Centenary Square and go on a self-guided tour of the Council Chamber, civic function rooms and Lord Mayor’s parlour.

Try a Triathlon

Bradford Council’s Richard Dunn Sports Centre will host its first triathlon later this month.

The event, which will be ideal for first timers and serious athletes alike, will consist of a swim at Richard Dunn Pool, followed by a cycle around the cycle track and a run to Horsfall Stadium and back The triathlon will start with a 400m swim in the pool with swimmers setting off in waves of eight or 12 Following the swim, participants will cycle 10km around the national standard cycle track and then run 5km to Horsfall Stadium, complete one lap of the running tyrack and then head back to RDSC. Participants will be given an electronic chip on the day which will give an overall time and position for the race.

‘Life means life’

A family, whose four-old-boy was murdered last year in their family home, have launched an online petition to keep their son’s killer behind bars indefinitely.

Anwar Rosser was handed a whole-life jail term in February, for the murder of little Riley Turner in January 2013.

Whilst his parents and twin brother slept, Riley was strangled and stabbed to death by Rosser in the family home on Harewood Road, Bracken Bank.

Now, after hearing of an appeal put forward by Rosser against his sentence, Riley’s family, alongside Keighley-based ‘Stop the Thieves’ crime group, have launched an online petition to ensure ‘life means life’.

The petition on change.org has already gathered more than 5,500 signatures in a fortnight, calling on the Court of Appeal to overturn the ruling which allows the 33-yearold killer a chance to have a full hearing in his grounds of appeal.

Dee Edwards is the petition organiser and explained why it was so vital to keep the ‘dangerous man’ in prison.

She said: “Anwar Rosser pleaded guilty to the murder, and was branded ‘an exceptionally dangerous man’ who could kill another child, by the sentencing judge, Mr Justice Coulson, sitting at Bradford Crown Court in February this year.

“The judge said the murder was a gross breach of trust of Riley’s family, and he told Rosser he ‘must go to prison for life’.

Psychiatric reports showed he did not have mental health problems which he had claimed and this was not his first offence.

Volunteers head to the rooftops for fundraising mission

The Lord Mayor of Bradford led the way for a group of courageous fundraisers last weekend as he scaled down the towering Jury’s Inn Hotel in the city.

Councillor Khadim Hussain, who officially stepped down from his duties as Lord Mayor on Tuesday, took on a daring abseil challenge in one of his final pushes to raise money for his Lord Mayor’s Charity Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure.

On Saturday 7th June, he was joined by more than 50 volunteers, including students from Grange Technology College, braving atrocious rainy conditions to complete the tricky challenge.

Unfortunately the teddy bear zip wire could not go ahead due to the rain yet it did not stop the group from clambering down the daunting site.

The abseil, now in its eleventh year, has

previously raised thousands of pounds for a variety of local charities and although no exact figure has been released yet, this latest event was deemed a success.

Speaking before heading down the building, The Lord Mayor was in good spirits adding that he was more than happy to take it on to raise vital funds for his cause.

He said: “I am really looking forward to the event, there will be a great view of the City if I dare to open my eyes.

“I hope people of all ages will sign up to take part to raise money.”

Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure was picked by the Lord Mayor as his charity of choice at the start of his term in office last year, and was inspired by the achievements of his autistic grandson, Mohammad Hudhayfah.

The final total raised this year has yet to be revealed, but Coun Hussain said he had succeeded in highlighting the achievements of disabled people.

Bradford-Whistling Woods International (WWI) Film School was set up last year in a partnership agreement which saw Asia’s premier film, communication and media arts institute join forces with the college.

For those new to the festival the performance aims to highlight the magical qualities of an oral ancient, music tradition that is rarely performed.

Super Sahdia Struggling widow honoured for completing college course to give better life to her children

A Bradford mother-of -two, whose husband tragically passed away four years ago, has been named by one of the city’s top educational establishments as their ‘Rising Star’.

Sahdia Ashraf, from Great Horton, decided it was time to do something with her life, after struggling with the loss of her husband, Navid, through Sudden Adult Death Syndrome in February 2010.

With two children to raise, the 34year-old decided to take up the option of returning to college to complete a beauty course whilst also balancing the ‘life of a busy mother’.

Coursework sessions until 3am and sitting numerous exams were juggled alongside school lunches and play time,

yet even with such a hectic schedule, Sahdia completed her course two months early.

Achieving top grades in all her tests, and producing high quality coursework lead to tutor, Emma Morris, putting Sahdia’s name forward for the accolade of ‘Adult Achiever’ at the college’s ‘Rising Stars Awards’.

After being named as winner of the overall Adult Achiever award at the presentation evening, the dedicated student says she was shocked and had never expected to clinch the top prize.

“I really didn’t think my name would be said when they were giving out the award and I was just shocked,” she said.

Sahdia’s youngest son, six-yearold Rayhan, suffers from Autism and Hypersensitivity. Because of his condition, he often required his mother to pick him up from school early or from the childminder meaning Sahdia would have to leave lessons.

She continued: “There were a few occasions where I had to miss a class or leave during one, because Rayhan may have been struggling.

“It was hard at times, and I could find myself completing coursework and catching up on lessons at around three in the morning, but I am so glad to have done it now.

“One day I just applied to Bradford College hoping to clear my head of everything. Two days later I got a letter through saying I’ve got an interview and the lady there said ‘you’ve got in’.

“I was absolutely shocked and so happy and would tell anyone thinking about doing a course to give it a go.”

Phone fraudsters ordered to pay back RING LEADER: Dilawar Ravjani (34), was jailed for 17 years – the longest sentence ever given to an individual in the UK for this type of fraud

£35million Four men have been ordered to repay £35 million or face more time in prison after being jailed for a total of 50 years for their part in an attempted £176 million VAT fraud.

They were part of a 15-strong gang, which claimed to have sold more than four million mobile phones but were caught after an investigation revealed many of the phones were fictitious.

Investigators reviewed VAT repayment claims submitted by companies linked to the conspiracy and stopped £67 million being paid to them.

Dilawar Ravjani, from Middlesex, was jailed for 17 years for his part in a leading a 15-strong criminal gang. He was ordered to repay £30,005,794 immediately or serve a further 10 years in prison.

The gang also included Tamraz Riaz, from Wakefield, who was sentenced to 13 years and was ordered to repay £200,435 within four months or serve a further two and a half years in prison.

Riaz was a family friend of the

Ravjanis and Dilawar Ravjani’s righthand man. He was manager of the Ravjani companies, a phone trader, and ran car sales businesses in Stanmore and Wakefield, Prestige Cars and Crystal Cars Ltd. He laundered the proceeds of the fraud through Crystal Cars Ltd. Rajesh Gathani, from Middlesex, who was sentenced to eight years and was ordered to pay £56,084 within three months or serve a further 18 months in prison.

Zafar Chishti, from Watford, who was sentenced to 11 years.

Chishti who fled prior to his trial and is still on the run and was ordered to repay £5 million with immediate effect or receive a further seven year prison sentence. Chishti is featured on HMRC's “Most Wanted” list of tax fugitives.

The gang claimed to have sold mobile phones worth around £1.7 billion, but in many cases the phones did not exist – including 250,000 handsets which hadn’t

even been launched in the UK. They also faked 5,700 business documents in an attempt to make their trade seem legitimate.

Robert Alder, Assistant Director, Criminal Investigation, HMRC, said: “This major investigation uncovered the severe abuse of our tax system by a ruthless criminal gang who made a huge profit from the fraud.

“They have already lost their freedom and now their illegal wealth will be taken away as well. These confiscation orders will rid these criminals of all their illicit gains so they can be reclaimed for public finances.”

A corrupt freight forwarding company also provided false paperwork for the alleged transportation of the phones and then claimed an additional VAT repayment.

Eleven other gang members were sentenced to a total of 21 years and confiscation proceedings are now underway to reclaim their criminal profits.

Kirklees student’s whip up some sweet surprises

A Tasty Treat

Judges from a major food service company were served up a real treat last month when they held a gluten free confectionery competition for catering students at Kirklees College.

Total Food Service (TFS) in Dalton asked students on the Level 3 Diploma in Patisserie and Confectionery to produce a pastry or dessert suitable for coeliacs (no gluten).

All entrants were graded on

presentation, taste, texture and commercial value, and despite an extremely high quality of produce across the board, only two winners could be selected.

Students, Azra Hussain, from Paddock, and Emily Colbeck, from Crossland Moor, were the skilled two whose tempting desserts wowed the judges.

Azra created gluten free samosas, whilst her fellow academic whipped up a white

chocolate and raspberry iced muffin.

Teresa Whyte, Company Sales Manager at Total Food Service, said the standard across all the entries was ‘amazing’ and congratulated the two final winners.

She said: “You have to be careful to ensure you get the taste right when it comes to gluten free but Emily’s muffin was so light in texture and taste you could not tell it was gluten free.

“I’ve not come across a gluten free samosa before so that has huge commercial value, but again the texture was amazing. The crispiness of the pastry Azra produced was just right.”

Azra said she had looked at making gluten free samosas because she had some friends who were coeliac and therefore really connected with the task.

“I wasn’t sure what flour to use but settled for gram flour in the

end and it worked really well. The pastry came out like normal samosa pastry,” she said.

Emily chose her recipe because it was one of her favourite flavours and she wanted to see if it could be done in gluten free. “I am really pleased. It turned out really well,” she said.

Total Food Service will now see if the student’s recipes can be used to create products they can sell commercially.

Police target domestic violence during World Cup Domestic violence offenders have been advised to seek help to change or risk paying the penalty as Police work to protect victims during this summer's World Cup. West Yorkshire Police and partner agencies have promised to protect victims by WARNING: West Yorkshire focussing on those Police Assistant Chief who abuse their Constable, Geoff Dodd, says partners and any violence will be met with families during the ‘full force of the law’ Brazil 2014.

Assistant Chief Constable Geoff Dodd of West Yorkshire Police said: “Offenders should be in no doubt that police and partners are determined to do everything possible to protect victims of domestic violence.

“During Euro 2012, while offences were lower than in the 2010 football World Cup we still saw spikes in reported incidents on match days.

“Inflamed passions and excess alcohol on a match day is no excuse for aggressive or violent behaviour. This is simply not acceptable and any violence will be met by the full force of the law.”

England's first game is scheduled to take place late in the evening of Saturday June 14 and in the build-up to the game, officers will be visiting known offenders and warning them about the consequences of aggressive or violent behaviour.

INTRUDER Police search for thief who targeted ‘vulnerable’ residents

Police have issued an Efit of a man they would like to speak to following a bogusofficial burglary in Horbury last week.

The Ossett Neighbourhood Policing Team would like to speak to anyone who recognises the man pictured following a burglary at a Whitehall Court in Horbury at about 5pm on Wednesday 4th June.

It took place after the victims, an 81-year-old woman and an 87-year-old man, noticed a shadow by the front door of their flat and, on checking, found a man had entered their home.

He did not introduce himself but asked them to go in the kitchen with him and run their taps to test them.

While they did so he left the kitchen, came back briefly, and then left again after telling them to once again run the water.

After a few moments the couple turned the taps off and later discovered the male, who by this stage had left the property, had stolen

a quantity of cash from their bedroom.

He was described as Asian, 5ft 6in tall, wearing a blue anorak type jacket, with blue and white stripes on the inside, with a hood and full sleeves. He also had dark hair, a half beard and glasses.

PC Sarah Young of the Ossett NPT, said: “We are investigating this incident and would like to speak to anyone who can identify the man pictured who has preyed on two vulnerable residents.

“I would remind householders that you are not under obligation to let anyone into your home and if anyone does say or intimate, as in this case, that they are from an organisation or are on official business then you should ask for ID and a contact number to check they are who they say they are.

“Anyone who has information or can help identify this man should contact myself at the Ossett NPT on 101.”

Serious An Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) review has found significant failings in the way West Yorkshire, along with two other large metropolitan police forces, handle complaints of discrimination.

The findings embarrassingly show that generally complaints of discrimination made by members of the

public, are poorly handled right from the beginning through to the end.

The IPCC examined 202 completed cases to determine how West Yorkshire, West Midlands and Greater Manchester police forces deal with allegations in relation to any kind of discrimination including race, disability and age. Three-quarters were race

allegations.

Of 170 complaints from the public alleging discrimination only 94 were investigated and of those no discrimination allegations were upheld – yet overall the three forces uphold between 11 and 13 per cent of complaint allegations from the public.

failings discrimination allegations raised by the police themselves were upheld.

The report found that there was insufficient training in diversity, and that this both results in complaints and means that they are not well handled.

Traditionally, complaints are dealt with by local officers, not specialist professional standards departments, and the quality of complaint handling at local level is clearly worse.

The report accentuates that a significant amount of training and support is needed to provide information, influence training and standards, and monitor outcomes.

IPCC Chair Dame Anne Owers said: “Our findings are stark.

“It is vital that police forces deal effectively with allegations of discrimination.

“For particular sections of the community, likely to be more distrustful of the police, or more vulnerable - or both, they are litmus test of confidence in

policing as a whole and of the police’s understanding of the communities they serve.

“While we welcome the fact that officers are prepared to report and challenge their colleagues when it comes to discriminatory behaviour, allegations made by members of the public need to be handled equally seriously and dealt with effectively.”

The report makes a series of recommendations for improving the quality of investigations into discrimination allegations, on training for both frontline and complaint-handling police personnel, and on ensuring meaningful contact with complainants.

As well as reviewing case files, the IPCC will use the study to inform a review of its own guidance to all police forces in England and Wales on dealing with allegations of discriminatory behaviour later this year.

Other findings from the report 8 out of 10 cases were not properly assessed, failing to take into account the gravity of the complaint and/or the officer’s previous disciplinary record; In 42% of cases, local resolution was being inappropriately used in cases that needed to be investigated because if substantiated they might have led to misconduct or criminal proceedings; 60% of local resolutions and 44% of investigations did not meet basic standards, and this rose to two-thirds and a half in cases that were handled at local level, rather than by professional standards departments; In nearly a fifth of cases, complainants were not directly contacted, and around two-thirds of eventual decisions were poorly communicated to complainants; In a quarter of investigations, findings were not based on evidence and in general the balance of probabilities was not properly applied.

Dragon’s Den comes to Pudsey A

s part of our commitment to working in our community, we have a partnership with Crawshaw School in Pudsey through the Make the Grade Scheme.

For the last 18 months we have held a series of events with them from careers shows, interview practice days and even a mock trial while the students played all the roles in a trial held at the old Pudsey Magistrates Court. In May we held a Dragons’ Den event with the school’s GCSE Business Studies students.

Four teams had each prepared their marketing plans for their fictional new law firm and had to pitch their plans to a team of Dragons consisting of Nigel Beck and Andrew Cumming of Pudsey Legal together with Marie Nicholl, relationship director at Nat West commercial, Darren Gower, Marketing Director at Eclipse Legal Systems and Councillor Mick Coulson.

Having seen the written plans before the presentation we were expecting the standard to be high and, once again, the students delivered!

EDUCATION: As part of Pudsey Legal’s partnership with the local Crawshaw’s School, a special Dragons Den-style event was held last month

The teams gave their 10 minute presentations and were then grilled by the Dragon’s. Try as we

might, we could not trip them up.

Each question we posed was confidently dealt with by every

single member of the teams – even the trick ones!

In the end, there had to be a

winner and this was the team who came up with the concept of Bradley and Co. However all the dragons were full of praise for the enthusiastic way the students threw themselves into this challenge. The quality of work they produced (much of it in their own time) was fantastic to see.

All the teams received their Pudsey Legal goodie bag and school points with the winning team also each receiving a £25 book voucher.

Andrew said, “It is great to see how the students can put what they are learning in the classroom into a practical setting.

“This process challenged them in new ways, yet the quality of their work actually made our task as Dragons’ extremely difficult – all credit to them.

“The Make the Grade scheme is a fantastic way to help the students bridge the gap between school and the workplace and I would urge all local businesses to see what benefits the scheme can offer, not just the schools in their community, but also their business through staff engagement and motivation.”

mployers can protect their business from ex-employees by including restrictive covenants within their contracts of employment. Such covenants have to be very carefully drafted for them to be enforceable because for an employer to be able to rely on a restrictive covenant, the covenant cannot go any further than what is reasonable to protect the employer’s legitimate business interest. The covenant would usually have to be limited in its duration, scope and the geographical area which it covered. Even if the restrictive covenant is clear, it may still be struck out if the Court is of the view that the restriction is too onerous.

It has usually been the case that, where possible, the Court would simply strike out an offending clause to make the

covenant more reasonable rather than rewrite the wording. This has meant that employers have been unable to enforce badly drafted restrictive covenants to protect their business interests when a key employee has left. However, the recently reported case of Prophet Plc –v- Huggett is a surprising exception to this rule.

Mr Huggett was the UK Sales Manager for Prophet Plc, a software developer for the fresh produce industry. He resigned to join K3 Business Solutions Limited, one of Prophet’s direct competitors. Prophet sought an Injunction to prevent Mr Huggett from starting work with K3 on the basis that his employment contract contained a “non-compete” covenant preventing him from selling any products which he was involved with during his employment with Prophet for a period of twelve months following the termination of his employment with them.

The High Court found that there had been an error in the drafting of that covenant in that if read literally, it was ineffective to protect Prophet because none of its competitors would actually sell Prophet’s products and those were the only products which Mr Huggett would have been involved with during his employment with Prophet. However and very surprisingly, the Court found that the intention behind the covenant had clearly

been to prevent Mr Huggett from selling products similar to those of Prophet and to make the covenant effective it added the words “or similar thereto” to the restrictive covenant. The Court found that the covenant as re-drafted was enforceable and therefore granted Prophet the Injunction it was seeking.

While it is common for Court to delete unenforceable parts of a covenant, this decision is highly unusual in that the Court added words to make it commercially effective and enforceable.

However, it should be noted that in this case the Judge found Mr Huggett to be a “thoroughly unreliable witness” and this appears to have influenced his decision.

Had Mr Huggett been a more credible witness then Prophet could well have found that they were unable to enforce the restrictive covenants in Mr Huggett’s employment contract.

This case demonstrates the wide discretion which the Courts have when considering the enforceability of restrictive covenants. However, this is a highly unusual case and is contrary to the usual principle that the Court will not rewrite the contract for the parties. It is unlikely that this case represents a fundamental change in the approach by the Court and employers should continue to ensure that the restrictions contained in employment contracts are properly drafted and if employees change roles or are promoted those restrictions are updated accordingly.

Employment on the rise New developments in Leeds have helped more than 1,200 local residents into jobs in just over a year.

A string of major projects currently in the pipeline across the city could also create almost 14,000 more new employment opportunities.

Figures from Leeds City Council show that between September 2012 and January 2014, 1,230 people secured new jobs and 57 young people

joined apprenticeships as part of developments around the city.

The jobs were secured by local people as part of obligations set out either in council contracts or Section 106 agreements with the developers during the planning process.

Major projects included the first direct arena, which saw 80 local residents secure construction jobs along with apprenticeships and work experience given to young people on site.

Temperatures soar as India’s power industry struggles to cope

Residents in Delhi are being warned that more power cuts are likely amid scorching summer heat, the power minister said on Tuesday.

North India has endured a heat wave in the last week, with temperatures in some parts of Delhi reaching a 62-year high.

The surge in demand for electricity from residents cranking up their air conditioning, and damage to power lines during a recent storm, has overwhelmed the grid, sparking outages across North India and forcing Delhi to introduce emergency power-saving measures.

Dilapidated power grids are simply unable to cope with the extra electricity needed to meet demand.

Piyush Goyal, minister of state for power, coal, and new and renewable energy, said ‘inadequate’ transmission lines meant Delhi could absorb 400 megawatts of power on top of its

existing 5,300 MW, falling short of current peak demand of 5,800 MW. “Clearly the power grid as it stands today is outdated, needs augmentation and modernisation and may repeatedly have outages and tripping problems,” he told a press conference after meeting with local power officials.

Three weeks after winning a national election on pledges to boost the economy and improve basic services, Prime Minister Narendra Modi faces a big challenge meeting

the growing demands for reliable and affordable power and water.

In Uttar Pradesh, where less than half of homes have power, angry locals set electricity substations on fire and took power company officials hostage at the weekend in protest at the recent blackouts, media reports said.

Goyal said engineers in Delhi were working 24 hours a day to fix broken lines, while the government has ordered GAIL to provide extra gas to a huge plant near the city functioning at a fifth of its capacity.

Husband jailed for life

Missing Mum’s murderer sentenced after ‘honour killing’ A man, who lured his wife to her death before wearing her clothing to convince family and friends she was still alive, has been jailed for a minimum of 20 years.

Ahmed al-Khatib put on his wife’s jeans and headscarf and then carried her corpse in a suitcase less than a hour after she dropped their children off at his brother's flat in Salford, Greater Manchester, on 7th June last year.

The body of Rania Alayed, 25, was then driven to the North Yorkshire area where it was buried. Police have yet to find the body of the Syrian-born motherof-three despite numerous searches.

Khatib, 35, was on Wednesday convicted by a jury of her murder and sentenced to life.

He admitted killing her but he claimed he pushed her to the floor and she banged her head after she appeared to him in the form of an evil spirit.

Manchester crown court heard the marriage was ‘marred by

violence’ and that Alayed, originally from the Middlesbrough area, left him after years of serious domestic violence.

She feared for her life and had sought help from the Citizens Advice Bureau, the police and eventually a solicitor which angered her husband's family.

The defendant's brother Muhaned al-Khatib, 38, said he was not present at the time that any violence was used against Alayed in his flat in Arthur Millwood Court and did not bear any responsibility for her murder.

He was cleared by the jury of that charge.

Both he and Ahmed Al-Khatib, of Gorton, had pleaded guilty to intending to pervert the course of justice by transporting and concealing the body of Alayed.

A third brother, Hussain alKhatib, 34, also of Gorton, was found guilty by the jury of intending to pervert the course of justice.

Muhaned al-Khatib was jailed

for three years, while Hussain alKhatib was imprisoned for four years.

Following last week’s sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Phil Reade, of GMP's Major Incident Team, said: “Rania was a young mother-ofthree with everything to live for.

“She was beginning to put an abusive and violent relationship behind her and had genuine cause to be optimistic for the future.

“But at the point, when she thought she might be able to create a better life for her and her children – free of the domestic abuse she suffered at the hands of Al-Khatib – her husband snatched it all away in the cruellest and most despicable way possible.

“Invited to a neutral meeting place, he murdered her in cold blood while her children were in the next room. We might never know whether they heard or saw anything of their mother's last movements.”

A gambler in England has placed what bookmakers say is one of the world's biggest ever political bets, wagering £400,000 that Scots will reject independence in a referendum in September.

The middle-aged man, who has not been named, spoke with an English accent as he placed the bet in the prosperous southern county of Surrey near London at odds of 1/4 on, meaning he will

make £100,000 if he wins, said bookmakers William Hill.

“As far as we can ascertain this is the biggest political bet ever struck,” said Graham Sharpe, media projects director at William Hill.

The bet is twice the £200,000, also put on a "no" vote, staked by a Scottish man earlier in the independence campaign.

By way of comparison, a customer similarly gambled

£200,000 on David Cameron, the current prime minister, winning the leadership of his Conservative Party in 2005.

Scots will vote in a referendum on 18th Sept on whether to leave the United Kingdom. Polls currently suggest roughly 40 percent of Scots will vote against independence and 30 per cent will vote for, but many voters remain undecided.

Fundamentalist literature Books promoting stoning found at English school

An Islamic primary school in Luton has been slammed by the education watchdog after books were found at the site which promoted stoning, lashing and execution.

During their most recent visit to Olive Tree Primary School, Ofsted officials deemed the school to be ‘inadequate’ after finding library books containing fundamentalist views which ‘had no place in British society’.

The review, carried out by Ofsted officials, was cancelled half way through after parents complained that their children had been asked about homosexuality, yet the regulatory body insisted that they had already gathered enough evidence to produce a full report.

Inspectors wrote that pupils' “contact with different cultures, faiths and traditions is too limited to promote tolerance and respect for the views, lifestyles and customs of other people.”

However, Mr Farasat Latif, chairman of governors, said he rejected the findings and said his school does have literature from different faiths.

He said: “Ofsted came into the school looking for problems of extremism and intolerance and didn't find any.

“They carried out a half-baked inspection, which they abandoned half-way through.

“We are the victims of the extreme politics of Michael Gove whose ignorance of Islam is matched by his hostility. Many Muslims will feel alienated and victims of state Islamaphobia.

“We are a small school with 65 children and got 100 per cent on our SATS last year. We are involved with charities, like Dr Barnados which is not a Muslim charity.

“We have a large number of books about different faiths, which inspectors failed to notice,

He added that the school would consider taking legal action against the report and were waiting to hear if they would be put into special

Britain and China set to talk

VANDALISED Iconic statue defaced A landmark statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the UK has been vandalised in the city of Leicester apparently in protest against the 1984 Operation Blue Star military raid on the Golden Temple.

Graffiti saying ‘Never forget 84’ and ‘We want justice #84’ were sprayed on the base of the statue in Leicester's famous Golden Mile of Indian-origin restaurants and shops.

It is believed that the messages are in reference to Operation Blue Star in June, 1984, when the Golden Temple in Amritsar was raided by the Indian Army to flush out Sikh extremists holed up inside.

Police are investigating the case after the vandalism was reported on Saturday. Sikhs from Leicester and around the UK on Sunday marched through London to mark the 30th anniversary of the siege.

Reacting to the incident, Leicester East MP Keith Vaz said damaging the Gandhi statue was ‘foolish’.

“To think that somebody has

felt it necessary, either an individual or a group of people, to vandalise in this foolish and idiotic way, such an important part of the heritage of India, as well as the heritage of Leicester, I think is a disgrace,” he said.

Operation Blue Star saw a reported 400 people killed, including 87 soldiers yet Sikh groups have argued that the figure is a misrepresentation and that thousands actually died in the conflict.

Just over four months after the attack, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who gave the go ahead for the attack, was killed by her Sikh bodyguards in revenge. Despite similar names, Mahatma Gandhi was not in any way related to the assassinated former leader.

Leicester City Council workers removed graffiti from the plinth of the bronze monument the following day.

Leicestershire Police is treating the incident as criminal damage and has appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

Britain will host Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in London next week for an annual summit, Prime Minister David Cameron's office said on Tuesday, two months after a human rights row between the two nation’s derailed talks.

Li will meet with Cameron at his London residence on 17th June, a reciprocal visit following the British leader's trip to China last year, Cameron's spokesman said.

“The prime minister will meet with Premier Li and their discussion will cover a wide range of bilateral issues, including trade, investment and commercial opportunities and the energy and cultural side,” Cameron's spokesman said.

China's foreign ministry said Li would also meet Britain's Queen Elizabeth and would head to Greece on his June trip to Europe.

Cameron met Premier Li in December when the largest-ever British mission of its kind went to China to patch up relations between the world's sixth- and secondlargest economies.

A rift over Britain's stance towards Tibet and the Dalai Lama, Tibet's spiritual leader, prompted London to cancel a planned trip by Cameron in 2012 after Beijing said its leaders would not be free to meet him.

ARRESTED: Altaf Hussain, exiled leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was initially detained by police on suspicion of money laundering

Less than one week after one of Pakistan’s best known politicians was detained by police on suspicion of money laundering, the controversial character was released on bail pending further inquiries.

60-year-old Altaf Hussain, the exiled leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the most powerful political party in the Karachi state of Pakistan, was arrested on Tuesday by police from his London home.

Just four days later, he was released on police-imposed bail and must return to their custody next month for renewed questioning.

Speaking to supporters in Pakistan via a streamed speech online, Hussain declared his innocence, saying: “I respect British laws and the judicial system. My lawyers are studying my case in accordance with the British laws.

“Truth will prevail by the grace of Allah.”

Hussain’s arrest had caused widespread business disruption and sporadic violence in his movement's power base in Karachi.

His hold on Pakistan’s biggest city is so strong that he is capable of shutting down entire neighbourhoods of the area of 18million.

London's Metropolitan Police say they are investigating the source of approximately £400,000 seized last year during searches of London properties linked to Hussain's party, including his

own home.

Following his arrest, Hussain spent three days in custody at a hospital receiving previously scheduled medical treatment, including an angiogram for suspected cardiovascular problems, his party said. Police finally questioned him on Friday.

Hussain's party frequently has been accused of threatening and killing political opponents. His party denies this, even though Hussain himself has repeatedly targeted opponents and journalists with threats that they could end up in ‘body bags’.

In a London-issued statement, his party appealed to followers in Pakistan to remain calm. It described the ongoing police investigation as ‘completely normal behaviour in a democratic country’.

Obama backs a ‘United’ Kingdom

US President Barack Obama has given his resounding vote in favour of Scotland remaining within the United Kingdom.

At a joint press conference during the G7 summit in Brussels with British Prime Minister David Cameron, Obama said the UK had been "an extraordinary partner" and that, as a foreigner, it seems to have worked well as unit.

Obama told reporters: “There is a referendum process in place and it is up to the people of Scotland.

“The United Kingdom has been an extraordinary partner to us. From the outside at least, it looks like things have worked pretty well. And we obviously have a deep interest in making sure that one of the closest allies we will ever have remains a strong, robust, united and effective partner.

“But ultimately these are decisions that are to be made by the folks there.”

Ferry crew go on trial

Fifteen crew of a South Korean ferry that sank in April killing more than 300 people, most of them children, went on trial on Tuesday on charges ranging from negligence to homicide, with the shout going up of "murderer" as the captain entered the court.

Captain Lee Joon-seok, 68, and three senior crew members were charged with homicide, facing a maximum sentence of death. Two were charged with fleeing and abandoning ship that carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Nine were charged with negligence, which can also carry jail terms.

Emotions ran high in court as family members appeared to have already convicted the crew who were caught on video abandoning ship, the captain in his underwear, while the children, obeying orders, waited in their cabins for further instructions.

As the defendants were led in, someone in the packed courtroom shouted: “That guy is the captain, isn't he? Murderer!”

Contingency plans ready for ‘poor rains’

Chaos at Karachi Airport Two attacks within the space of two days was the unfortunate reality which Pakistan’s Karachi Airport found itself facing earlier this week after Taliban forces targeted the site.

Insurgents claimed responsibility for the attacks on Sunday 8th June at the main Jinnah International Airport which resulted in more than 30 people being killed, and 48 hours later at the nearby security academy, which saw no casualties.

On Sunday, an all-night siege

by Taliban gunmen had shut down Pakistan’s busiest airport as ten militants, disguised as security force members and armed with rocket-propelled grenades stormed the airport.

Although they did not achieve their target of seizing an aircraft, nor did they make it to the main

building where most passengers were waiting, 34 people were still killed.

“We accept responsibility for another successful attack against the government,” Pakistani Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid told Reuters. “We are successfully achieving all our targets and we will go on carrying on many more such attacks.”

On Tuesday, a group of gunmen on motorbikes opened fire on an academy run by the Airports Security Force (ASF) yet fled after security forces retaliated.

Between two and four gunmen are believed to have been seen heading towards the base on motorbikes, firing their weapons near the airport of Pakistan’s commercial capital.

Unlike Sunday’s shootings,

there were no recorded casualties for this most recent attack.

“The shooting came from a nearby shanty settlement towards the ASF,” said a senior police officer. “Police are launching a search operation now.”

Karachi airport briefly suspended all flights in and out of the sprawling city of 18 million, an official said, but most flights were restored by 1030 BST. Sri Lankan Airlines cancelled a Karachi-bound flight with 207 passengers on-board after the latest attack.

Earlier on Tuesday morning, Pakistani fighter jets bombed Taliban positions on the Afghan border. It was unclear if the air strikes were part of a broader, planned offensive or retaliation to the weekend’s airport attack.

India will consider giving subsidised diesel, cheaper loans and extra seeds to farmers if rains turn out to be poor this year, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said, adding the country was ready to deal with a patchy monsoon.

India is expected to receive below-average rainfall this year, potentially damaging crops in about half of the country's farmland that depends on monsoon rains.

“We have six proposals to help farmers in droughtaffected areas and we will soon take these proposals to cabinet,” Singh told

reporters on Monday.

"We are prepared to deal with poor rains and have already started working with the state governments, especially Punjab, Haryana, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh," Singh said, referring to some of the main grain growing regions.

Half of India's farmland still lacks access to irrigation making many farmers particularly dependent on monsoon rains. The country plans to expand irrigation coverage by at least a tenth by 2017 to cut its dependence on the seasonal rains.

RAPE: “Sometimes right, sometimes wrong” India PM Modi ally Babulal Gaur slammed for outrageous comment A BJP lawmaker and ally of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has described rape as a social crime, saying ‘sometimes it's right, sometimes it's wrong’.

The controversial remarks were made by Babulal Gaur - the home minister responsible for law and order in the BJP-run central state of Madhya.

Now political leaders of Uttar Pradesh, the state where two cousins aged 12 and 14 were raped and hanged recently, have faced criticism for failing to visit the scene and for accusing the media of hyping the story.

Gaur said that the crime of rape can only be considered to have been committed if it is reported to the police.

“This is a social crime which depends on men and women.

Sometimes it's right, sometimes it's wrong,” said Babulal Gaur.

“Until there's a complaint, nothing can happen,” he added.

Gaur also expressed sympathy with Mulayam Singh Yadav, head of the regional Samajwadi Party that runs Uttar Pradesh.

In the recent election, Mulayam criticised legal changes that foresee the death penalty for gang rape,

The father and uncle of one of the victims said they tried to report the crime to local police but had been turned away. Three men have been arrested over the killings. Two

policemen were held on suspicion of trying to cover up the crime.

Although a rape is reported in India every 21 minutes on average, law enforcement failures mean that such crimes - a symptom of pervasive sexual and caste oppression - are often not reported or properly investigated, human rights groups say.

More sex crimes have come to light in recent days. A woman in a nearby district of Uttar Pradesh was gang-raped, forced to drink acid and

strangled to death. Another was shot dead in northeast India while resisting attackers, media reports said.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Kimoon has said he was ‘especially appalled’ by the rape and murder of the two girls.

“We say no to the dismissive, destructive attitude of, 'Boys will be boys',” he said in a statement this week that made clear his contempt for the language used by Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The deadly flash floods were just the latest in a number of incidents, which have led to landslides and avalanches in the country’s mountains, where many villages and roads are virtually cut off from the rest of civilisation.

850 houses were completely destroyed by these most recent floods with more than 1,000 damaged, leaving people in need of shelter, food, water and medicine.

The death toll stood at 81 as of Sunday yet the search for missing people continues according to police chief in the Guzirga i-Nur district of Baghlan province, Lt Fazel Rahman.

“So far no one has come to help us. People are trying to find their missing family members,” he said, adding that the district's police force was overstretched by the scale of the disaster and needed reinforcement.

General Mohammad Zahir Azimi, spokesman

for the Afghan defence ministry, said two army helicopters had been sent to the area to provide assistance.

Guzirga i-Nur district is located more than 85 miles (140km) north of the provincial capital, Puli Khumri.

Jawed Basharat, the spokesman for the Baghlan provincial police, said they were aware of the flooding, but that it would take eight to nine hours for them to reach the area by road.

Afghans living in the northern mountains have largely been spared from the country's decades of war, but are no strangers to natural disasters.

Last month, a landslide triggered by heavy rain buried large sections of a remote northeastern village in the Badakhshan province which borders China, displacing some 700 families.

Authorities have yet to provide an exact figure on the number of dead from the 2nd May landslide, and estimates have ranged from 250 to 2,700. Officials say it will be impossible to dig up all the bodies.

An 18-year-old Pakistani woman who survived an attack by relatives, who tried to kill her for marrying someone she loves, has said that she feared for her life and appealed for protection.

Saba Maqsood, survived being shot and thrown in a canal by her family just days after the ‘honour killing’ of another woman in Pakistan drew worldwide condemnation.

Maqsood angered her family by marrying the man of her choice a few days ago in the Punjabi city of Gujranwala - an act of defiance in a conservative part of Pakistan where women are expected to agree to arranged marriages.

Fighting militants through TV New channel to launch in opposition to kidnappers In a somewhat unique move, the United States have announced that they are to finance a new 24-hour satellite TV channel in northern Nigeria in the latest fight against insurgents.

The project, which is already underway, is aiming to counter insurgencies by the militant Islamist group Boko Haram and other groups in the region.

A US official said the country would: “support Nigerian efforts to provide an attractive alternative to messaging of violent the extremists.”

According to sources, the project has been in the making for two years with initial discussions taking part as far back as 2012. The contents of the channel will be produced in Nigeria by Nigerians in response to the violent Boko Haram group.

In recent months, the US has been one of a number of countries which has increased its collaboration with Lagos, providing greater surveillance and communication in response to

The project is run in Nigeria by Equal Access International, a San government Francisco-based contractor that has managed media programs sponsored by the state department in Yemen and Pakistan meant to encourage youth participation in politics and counter Islamist extremism. to The Times According newspaper, foreign policy experts have said the project faced several challenges in a region with low levels of infrastructure, public services, literacy and security.

Access to electricity is limited and few people own televisions.

In addition to the broadcasts, the Times said the project would provide training to journalists in the region.

Imran's maternal uncle Aamir Khan had gone on record to say that the family is very excited about the new arrival.

The couple had announced that they were expecting their first child in December 2013.

Madhuri still optimistic Her last two releases ‘Gulaab Gang’ and ‘Dedh Ishqiya’ may have nose-dived at the box office, but Madhuri Dixit says she doesn't cry over spilt milk.

Diplomatic Madhuri laughed stating that she doesn’t hone negative vibes and tries to remain optimistic. She also said that she’s keen to do a film with Salman Khan.

Q. What was it like making this film?

A. This movie, being, working with Akshay Kumar is always “rowdy” because he is such a fun person to work with and this film was no different except it was slightly different than the ones we have done together. It’s a bit more serious. It’s very intelligent. It’s got a very good plot to it. It’s about a soldier who comes back to his hometown on holiday but finds out about this terrorist activity that’s going to go down and how he does everything to stop it, which is quite thrilling actually!

Q. Last year you gave audiences a significant performance in ‘Lootera’, what’s in store for your fans?

A. I actually do want to do many more films like ‘Lootera’, but the fact is that scripts like that are very rare to come along and I am waiting for the right

Entertainment one. Until I don’t feel instinctive or very strongly about something I won’t do it just for the sake of being in a film. I need something perfect for me to come along… like the role of ‘Pakhi’, which was perfect for me.

Q. Do you feel as a woman in Bollywood that very often the heroine gets lost in “heroorientated” films?

A. Ahh, no I think everybody has a part to play. If it wasn’t required there wouldn’t be a hero to play in these heroorientated or masala films. So everybody has their part to play and I think we should look at it like that. I mean in Hollywood nobody sees how big the role is.

Someone will play the smallest role but be appreciated as well .

Q. For ‘ Holiday’ you play the role of a boxer for which you were trained by Vijender Singh . What was that like?

A. I wish I’d trained a little bit more, but he taught me about the basic body language of being a boxer. Luckily I picked it up well because I’ve always been a sporty person. Even when I was younger - at school I used to play a lot of sports and I think it just comes naturally to me, so It really wasn’t that difficult. The director Murugadoss wanted it to look very natural not girly and not playful. He wanted it to look professional, so I think Vijender was a big help in that.

Q. So who would you like to knock out?

A. There are so many people that I meet every day that I (laughs) can’t. I’m a very diplomatic and nice person (more laughs).

Q. You’ve been lucky that since the beginning of your career you’ve always worked with the big stars. We hear that now you are working with your dad’s very close friend Rajinikhanth, is that wierd?

A. I was very nervous. I wasn’t sceptical I mean to debut in Tamil films who better to debut with than the biggest star! So there were no doubts about that but I was nervous yes, of course.

When I met him for the first time on the set I told him “…you know sir, it’s an honour working for you but I’m so nervous”. When he asked why I was nervous and that it was him that should be nervous because he’s working with his friend’s daughter!

(Laughs) In truth though, he’s very professional and a very humble man and there is so much to learn from him. It’s amazing working with someone like that, you know? with a personality like that.

Q. You’ve been the original 100 crore heroine who also showed her metal in critically acclaimed movies. What is more important for you?

A. I think for me it’s always been box office because the more people watch your films the more you reach out to an audience so I think it’s always been box office.

Q. You are looking stunning Sonakshi I know once upon a time there used to be this natural obsession with your weight.

A. Yeah (laughs) well there still is! Damned if you do damned if you don’t (more laughs). So I just want people to stop talking about it. This is me.

Dynamics are at their most beautiful with the RS 7 Sportback, the most potent fivedoor coupé in the Audi range, making it look even sharper and perform even more efficiently, yet no less formidably.

The mighty four-litre twin-turbo V8 engine retains its rightful place at the heart of the new-look RS 7 Sportback, but is with a four per cent reduction in CO2 emissions and improved three per cent fuel consumption.

Combining the power of a sports car with the elegance of a large, fivedoor coupé, the revised engine provides the same prodigious 560 PS and catapults the five-door coupé from 0 to 62mph in 3.9 seconds, with top speed of up to 187mph.

An eight-speed tiptronic transmission tuned for optimum performance also features a tall final gear to contribute to fuel efficiency.

On a combined cycle, the resonant V8 twin-turbo

returns up to 29.7mpg, and emits 221 grams of CO2 per km. A key factor in this efficiency is the Cylinder on Demand (CoD) system, which can shut down four cylinders during partial load operation.

Even at first glance, the Audi RS 7 Sportback reveals its dynamic character – the long bonnet, flowing C-pillars and the sharply sloping rear end form an aesthetic overall impression. New design details such as the single-frame grille with the black honeycomb add striking touches.

The headlights now feature LED technology as standard and the Matrix LED technology available for the first time on the RS 7 Sportback, with integrated dynamic turn signals on the front

and rear.

In the elegant interior, dominated by the RS sport seats, the designers have made judicious changes to the instrument cluster, including the air outlet controls of the vent nozzles, the shift paddles behind the steering wheel and the quattro emblem on the instrument panel.

Sportback is fitted with 20-inch forged lightweight alloy wheels as a standard. Optional 21-inch cast aluminium wheels are available in three different colours. The four internally ventilated brake discs have a weight-saving wave design.

Alternatively carbon fibreceramic discs are available as an option. Electronic Stabilisation Control (ESC) features a Sport mode that can be deactivated altogether if required.

The Audi RS 7 Sportback will be available to order in the UK later this summer ahead of first deliveries in late 2014.

Another Mini adventure The much-awaited five-door Mini hatchback has finally been unveiled, featuring an extra seat, more legroom and a larger boot than the three-door.

It’s the first time in the history of the brand that the Hatch has been offered with two rear doors, and the new model promises to combine the hallmark driving fun, distinctive character and refinement of its 3-door sibling with enhanced practicality.

By using a longer and wider body, the five-door is able to offer 72mm more legroom for rear passengers, who can also now access the new row of three seats via small but useful rear doors.

Boot space is up to 278 litres, which although still comparatively low is 67 more than the three-door hatch can boast. It retains the shallow glass area and overall look of the big-selling hatch, with a slight additional bulge at the boot to allow for the extra luggage capacity.

Overall the new kid is 16cm longer and 1cm taller along with eking out 6cm of extra interior width, almost making it a halfway house between the three-door hatch and the high-riding five-door Countryman.

There will be two solid and nine metallic exterior paint colours, Mini has confirmed, while the Cooper S and SD models will be visually distinguished by a honeycomb pattern in the radiator grille, an anthracite bumper trim, bonnet scoop, air ducts integrated in the lower air inlets and a separate rear apron with exhaust pipes located at the centre.

It will be made available only in Cooper and Cooper S guises at first, with D-badged diesel variants of the same trim levels. The Cooper and Cooper D will both use three-cylinder turbocharged engines pushing out 134 and 114bhp respectively.

Moving up to the Cooper S and the Cooper SD brings heavier but more powerful four-cylinder powerplants claiming 189 and 168bhp, with this performance bias conjuring impressive 062mph acceleration stats of 6.8 and 7.4 seconds.

Set for showrooms this autumn, prices will start from £15,900, with Mini's famous options list on standby to bolster specifications.

BMW X6 gets updated styling and improved engines Despite not getting the best response when it was released in 2008, the BMW X6 has gone on to sell around quarter of a million units globally. Now the German firm is bringing the updated model, based on the all-new X5.

As a result it’s got the same 2933mm wheelbase as BMW’s large SUV but it’s lower and wider. Those newly created

dimensions obviously help create the coupé-crossover look that distinguishes the X6, and now the smaller X4.

BMW has updated the styling with a few of the cues used on its latest models.

That means headlights that flow directly in to the double kidney grille and the Air Curtains in either side of the front bumper, which work in conjunction with new Air Breathers in the side panels to reduce drag.

The interior itself is a little more practical than the old X6, featuring rear seats that can now be folded 40:20:40 (rather than 60:40). With them all in place there’s 580 litres of space and with them all down there’s 1525 litres, which is 75 litres more than in the old X6.

From the launch in December this year, the X6 comes with two diesel engines – the 30d and M50d – with the 50i rounding off the range. A 35i and 40d arrive in spring 2015. The 30d

will be the big seller, boasting 47.1mpg and 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds. Those are improvements of 19 per cent and 0.8 seconds respectively compared with the old car.

There are similar gains throughout the range, with the quickest model being the 50i. It can sprint from 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds, which is just a tenth of a second down on the old X6 M. We’re expecting a new M version to arrive using a boosted version of the 50i’s 4.4-litre V8, with power up to around 550bhp.

Until that car arrives buyers can go for the M50d, which hits 62mph in 5.2 seconds and comes with a few M-style chassis upgrades like Adaptive M suspension and bespoke settings for the steering and dampers.

Much of the technology found on the latest X5 will also be available on the new X6, including a system to brake and accelerate for you in traffic, a head up display and active lane keep assist.

The Ferrari F12berlinetta has been awarded the Compasso d’Oro (Golden Compass), one of the oldest and most prestigious international design accolades.

Ferrari’s Senior Vice President of Design, Flavio Manzoni accepted the award on behalf of Ferrari in the Officine Ansaldo exhibition hall in Milan.

This important accolade is not the first for Ferrari.

Mercedes C-Class top family car

Mercedes-Benz has risen up the rankings in an ownership satisfaction survey, seeing it scoop a top family car position with the C-Class.

Mercedes-Benz featured prominently in a survey taking in the views of over 15,000 owners of cars registered between January 2011 and December 2012 and covering 27 different car brands. Focusing on a diverse range of attributes, from reliability and quality to comfort, performance and economy, the survey is the most detailed and comprehensive of its kind.

Particular praise focused on its efficient and powerful range of engines, the comfort features and its styling.

‘Virtually’ beautiful Concept Woerthersee GTI Roadster, designed for gaming, turns into reality Volkswagen is turning the virtual world into reality this weekend, as it presents the GTI Roadster concept at the famous Woerthersee GTI meeting in Austria.

The GTI Roadster was originally created as a purely electronic car, to feature in the Sony PlayStation® 3 classic, Gran Turismo 6 (GT6). The result of cooperation between Volkswagen and Sony Computer Entertainment, the GTI Roadster is the work of three young Volkswagen designers, winners of an in-house competition to design a vehicle to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Gran Turismo game.

Unconstrained by the constraints of production models – for example feasibility and price – designers Malte Hammerbeck, Domen Rucigaj and Guillermo Mignot came up with a winning design that was selected by Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand, and Kazunori Yamauchi of Sony Computer Entertainment, the creator of the Gran Turismo series.

The virtual car was unveiled on 26 May, and just days later, Volkswagen is presenting it made real, at the annual gathering of GTI fans on the shores of

Woerthersee.

The GTI Roadster draws on last year’s Woerthersee car, the Design Vision GTI, but with an even more extreme design.

Its 2,494 mm wheelbase is 137 mm shorter than that of the production Golf GTI, and also shorter than the wheelbase of the Design Vision GTI. The GTI Roadster’s minimal height (1,090 mm) and extreme width (1,894 mm) versus its overall length (4,158 mm) help create jaw-dropping proportions.

Power for the two-seat GTI Roadster comes from a 3.0-litre V6 biturbo TSI engine that produces 503 PS, and maximum torque of 560 Nm between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. Some 500 Nm of torque is available from just 2,000 rpm.

Power is delivered via a seven-speed DSG gearbox and 4MOTION fourwheel drive, helping to propel the 1,420 kg GTI Roadster from zero to 62 mph in just 3.6 seconds, and on to a top speed of 190 mph. Stopping power is suitably prodigious, thanks to ceramic brakes that nestle behind 8.5 J x 20inch wheels with 235/35 tyres at the front and 9.5 J x 20-inch wheels with 275/30 tyres at the rear.

In 2006, a football academy was set up in the heart of Bradford to bring sport to children and now, just eight years later, this same club is flourishing with two junior sides and

one senior outfit storming the city’s leagues.

The Manningham Football Academy was initially developed through the United Youth Forum with the aim of increasing participation numbers in football, whilst also getting healthy, making friends and gaining confidence.

Four years later and the first competitive side was launched, the Manningham All Stars Under 12’s – now Under 16’s, before a second Under 12 unit established in 2012 and a senior side followed in 2013.

Success was almost instantaneous for the open age side who, this past season, have picked up the league

title, whilst also making it to two cup semi-finals.

Competing against teams from all across West Yorkshire, the senior’s had a campaign to remember and celebrated alongside their junior colleagues at a presentation ceremony in the city last weekend.

Senior team manager, and club chairman, Khalil Hussain, said it had been a year to remember and thanked the players, coaches and sponsors for their support over the past 12 months.

The team’s rapid development is also partially down to the charity, StreetGames, which changes lives and communities through sport.

Latif, who only turned 18-years-old in April, will race a British-built Zytek in the 82nd running of the gruelling twice-around-the-clock race that begins on Saturday at 2pm (BST).

Latif is the youngest British driver in the 168-driver, 56-car field and could become the second youngest driver in the history of the event to finish the annual Le Mans race that runs for the 82nd time next weekend.

Latif has been racing an Audi in races in America and throughout Europe so far this season. He got his first taste of the daunting 8.47-mile circuit consisting of closed “public” roads combined with a permanent race track section last Sunday.

The eight-hour test was the only opportunity for the invited 54-car entry and saw the Latif/Munneman/ Winslow Zytek set the 14th fastest time in the ultracompetitive 17-car LM P2 category despite only using old tyres.

Latif, who clocked up 26-laps himself during the test day, reflected: “I visited Le Mans last year for the first time and the atmosphere was amazing. The changeable weather could be the biggest challenge for me.

“The recent test day enabled me to learn the track – and the Zytek. The biggest challenge were the high-speed Porsche Curves. A sports-prototype is a very different car to the GT3 sportscar that I’m used to racing this year.

“Overtaking some of the slower cars can be tricky too. Sometimes it’s a case of not being too ambitious and back off a little - it’s better to lose a few seconds than to get bumped off the track.

“I settled in with the team and was very happy with the car at the test. I’m confident that we’ll have a good race.”

It has been five years since Bradford boxer, Nadeem Siddique took to the ring, yet now, after an injury-ridden period, he is back and determined to be better than ever.

Sid, who competes as a lightwelterweight, has been training for the past 12 months after overcoming a back injury which hampered his blossoming career.

With 22 wins, and just two losses to his name, the now 36year-old had gathered a large following from Yorkshire’s faithful, even clinching the BBBofC Central Area welterweight title.

Now he is back after a lengthy spell on the sidelines and says he wants to remind his fans why he became so popular “It has been a fight really since last year, just trying to get myself back in shape and ready

for this fight,” he said.

“I’ve been training with the Ingles over in Puerta Ventura for a fortnight of intense training alongside the likes of Kell Brook and Kid Galahad and I am now really excited about getting back in the ring.”

The local competitor will put on the gloves again on Saturday 14th June in Manchester’s Victoria Warehouse where he will take on an unnamed opponent.

Despite not knowing what he will come up against he says he is confident of recapturing the form which gave him such a reputation in the past.

“I’ve got my goals and targets now and just want to get some wins under my belt,” he said. “I already have two more fights lined up after this one so it is just preparing for this and then taking it one step at a time.”

The ever reliant Nico Hulkenberg came home in his seemingly favoured fifth spot, to take his own tally of points this season to a massive 57.

Speaking after the race, Hulkenberg said: “It has been a very busy race for me today, so to come away with ten points and a fifth place is a good result.

“I gained some positions at the end due to the crash between Sergio and Massa but lost one to Jenson [Button] when I was in a battle with Alonso, but we were always going to finish in the points regardless.

“The safety car at the start didn't help me as it allowed those on supersoft tyres to stretch their stints.

“Being on a different strategy from everyone else meant I always had someone pushing close behind me; it was fun, but also very challenging, especially towards the end of the race as I had quite a long stint on the supersoft tyres.”

Perez, who says he thought a podium finish was ‘possible’ was discharged from hospital the same day.

He said: “On the final lap I was defending my position going into turn one when I suddenly got hit from behind. It was a big impact, but I am okay.

“I’m really sad for the team because we had an amazing race today and the one-stop strategy was working perfectly.”

British teenager Alessandro Latif makes his Le Mans 24 Hour motor race debut next weekend, 14th-15th June, but only after taking his first Alevel examinations.

The 18-year-old Londoner who has an Indian-born father and mother from Italy, has been given permission to ‘sit’ three exams in Paris this week before taking another less than 24 hours after the finish of this year’s twice-around-the-clock endurance sportscar race.

The Marlborough College student will use the high-speed TGV train to make the 120-mile journey on three consecutive days to take mathematics, advanced maths and physics exams.
