A Brighouse restaurateur was just one of West Yorkshire’s residents who were awarded for their courage at a recent police awards ceremony which commended our everyday heroes.

Ali Kurnaz, 39, from Brighouse, was awarded a Chief Constable’s Commendation after he tackled a would-be-thief following a mile long chase through the town centre.

After seeing a 79-year-old woman ‘wrestled’ to the floor by a man who snatched away her handbag, the local resident took it upon himself to bring the assailant to justice.

Meet the Sikh woman growing a beard ‘I feel more feminine, more sexy and I think I look it too’

A Sikh woman, who suffers from a common condition which affects millions in the UK, has ditched the razor and embraced her ‘true look’, taking the decision to grow a beard.

Harnaam Kaur, 23, from Slough, has polycystic ovary syndrome (POS), a condition which, amongst other things, can lead to excessive hair growth on the face.

For years she battled the condition, and at times even contemplated taking her own life, but seven years ago she took the courageous decision to stop shaving and has never looked back since.

Being baptised as a Sikh, a religion which forbids the cutting of body hair, Harnaam says she became more confident in her looks.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, she said: “I would never ever go back now and remove my facial hair because it’s the way God made me and I’m happy with the way I am.

“I feel more feminine, more sexy and I think I look it too. I’ve learned to love myself for who I am nothing can shake me now.”

Harnaam began to develop the condition when she was just 11years-old and tried a number of methods to rid herself of the facial hair – including waxing, bleaching and shaving – yet it just grew back thicker than before.

During school she says she was bullied for her looks but now she believes that by embracing the beard, she has become more feminine than ever.

She added: “I’m able to go out and shop in the women’s section without feeling I shouldn’t be there.

“I wear skirts, dresses and jewellery and I like to get my nails done like every other girl.”

Harnaam now uploads videos to YouTube in the hope of spreading her confidence amongst other young women who suffer from similar conditions as herself.

Despite threats against her life

and some abusive comments, she insists that her look is still the most comfortable one she has ever had and hopes more women will embrace the beard.

“I want other women to find the strength that I have,” she said.

“I’ve...had loads of nice comments from men all over the world - one even asked me to marry him.

“If I had any message it would be to live the way you want – it’s your journey and it’s your life.”

Works to begin on Thornbury Barracks Junction A notorious junction in Leeds is to get traffic lights thanks to an improvement scheme tackling congestion and safety concerns.

Thornbury Barracks roundabout on the A647, the main road between Bradford and Leeds, is the site of severe congestion at peak times which often causes long tailbacks.

It also has a history of accidents with 19 occurring there since 2008 – mainly caused by lane changing conflicts.

People across Leeds are being asked for their views on the criteria Leeds City Council uses to decide if taxi licences should be granted.

Before the council can grant licenses for private hire driver, private hire operator, Hackney carriage driver or Hackney carriage proprietor, it must ensure the applicant is a 'fit and proper' person. One aspect the council must look at is the criminal history of the applicant and the potential risk posed to the public if a license was granted.

Although the council has an existing policy in place to assess if a person is ‘fit and proper’, it is now outdated and needs to be reviewed.

The council is currently in the process of drawing up a new policy to make sure it is up to date and relevant to today’s society. Gathering people’s view is vital to help the council put together a policy which addresses the potential risk to the public whilst being fair and transparent to applicants.

The proposed scheme, estimated to cost £3.4million, has been successfully awarded grant funding from the Department for Transport’s Local Pinch Point fund.

Bradford Council Sports and Leisure Service are offering children aged five to eleven, the chance to take part in after school clubs, where they can participate in a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities.

Following the success of week-long B.A.S.E (bactive Sports and Exercise)camps during the school holidays, new after school clubs will run for six weeks from the 3rd March at a range of venues across the district.

Plans for a new high-end hotel project in central Leeds could spell the end for one of the city’s most wellknown curry houses.

Akbar’s Restaurants have become some of the most recognisable establishments in the county, yet it seems their Greek Street premises may not be running much longer if the proposed 90-bedroom hotel receives planning permission.

The work will require the demolition of a derelict mechanical stacker car park and the restaurant – both buildings owned by recently refinanced Evans of Leeds.

An application was submitted to Leeds City Council last year seeking permission for the construction of a luxury hotel, with accommodation provided over 11 floors at a location between Russell Street and Greek Street currently home to the car park and Akbar's restaurant.

The hotel will be ‘high-end’ with a four-star plus accommodation rating and will be operated by Dakota Hotels.

Subject to further detailed approval of the proposed building materials, the hotel will feature a mix of black cladding at ground and first floor and a grey treatment for upper floors in keeping with Dakota's other venues.

Evans, which has partnered with Dakota at other UK locations, owns several properties in the vicinity of Bond Court and is currently in the process of refurbishing Minerva

House and also plans to refurbish Capitol House in the near future.

As well as the proposal to demolish the stacker car park and the single storey restaurant, the area of Bond Court will be resurfaced to match the initial phase of works already completed. Various changes to the public highway are also to be carried out on Russell St and Greek St. The plans have been recommended for approval subject to conditions, including the completion of highway works prior to the opening of the hotel to customers.

In a report to be scrutinised by the council's planning committee, the existing area is said to be blighted by the presence of the stacker car park which has now fallen in to disrepair and is no longer used.

The report adds that as other buildings in this area are being refurbished, there is now an opportunity to upgrade this part of the city centre.

The laying out of a large area of public realm and highway by the applicant, as well as the creation of a new pedestrian route, has been welcomed by planners and the proposal will generate employment opportunities both during the construction and operational phases once opened to the public.

BD3 clean-up

A whole series of activities is being organised to restore pride in the community of the BD3 area of Bradford Barkerend and Bradford Moor.

A campaign is being run by local schools and community groups with the support of Bradford Council's neighbourhood services to improve the environment in the BD3 area and raise community spirit.

And the Proud of BD3 week begins this Saturday 1st March with a community event at Delius Special School between 1pm and 4pm.

In the run-up to the launch of the clean-up week,

the Deputy Lord Mayor, Coun Joanne Dodds, attended the annual Sant Nirankari Mission Street Clean initiative in Napier Street, off Leeds Road, last Saturday and this week, the Otley Road and Barkerend Environment Group are making bird feeders for local people.

Recycling Renovations

One of Leeds’ eight recycling centres is set for a major overhaul.

Members of the council’s executive board are being asked to approve works that will vastly improve facilities at the Kirkstall Road recycling centre when they meet on Wednesday 5th March.

Although detailed design work has yet to be concluded, the proposed site blueprint includes a new re-use shop – similar to Revive at the East Leeds recycling centre – so people can donate unwanted but good quality items to local charities.

The proposals also include providing an area for waste transfer activities, which currently take place at the site.

If councillors agree, detailed design works will be finalised and a full planning application submitted.

Residents who already have a brown bin will continue to have it collected on the same day.

If in any doubt about your collection day, you can check on the council’s website. You can also download a handy calendar to remind you of your collection schedule.

Using brown bins is an effective way of keeping garden waste out of landfill; helping to save money and cut carbon emissions.

Residents also have the option of composting at home. The council offers reduced price compost bins so you can turn your kitchen and garden waste into a useful resource to use in your garden.

“I wasn’t willing to stand for it and so gave chase to him for about a mile through Brighouse before finally tackling him near the canal and calling the police.

“I didn’t do it for a reward but because I believe it is very important that we stand up for people in these situations and show our true colours. The poor woman could have been severely injured the way she was just thrown to the ground and it really made me angry to see it.”

In another astonishing act of bravery, Bradford resident, Imran Hussain, followed a vehicle which he had earlier seen hit a pedestrian on Great Horton Road and drive off from the scene.

The third annual Leeds Apprenticeship Awards take place on Tuesday, March 4, and will proudly welcome His Royal Highness The Duke of York KG to Leeds Civic Hall.

Improvements through ALMOs

Huge changes to the way social housing in Leeds is run are starting to pay big dividends according to the latest Leeds City Council findings.

In June 2013 Leeds City Council decided to integrate housing management into the council in a way which meant that the ‘arm’s length management organisations’ (ALMOs) which had previously looked after the city’s housing stock would come back under the council’s direct control.

Savings from the reorganisation of the ALMOs are already anticipated to reach £1.5million in 2014/15, as the number of senior staff is reduced and the continuing financial benefits of integrating the three services begin to be delivered.

Projections show savings will rise to £2.4million over the next two years and Leeds City Council have also been able to make use of over £6million ALMO reserve funds to inject investment into the wider city capital programme. This will mean improvements for council tenants can be funded along with the council’s commitment to improving the quality of housing further and faster than previous government standards required.

Murder Inquiry launched PLEA: Asma Saddique is appealing for people to come forward who may know what happened to her husband on Valentine’s Day in 2007

Seven years to the day that a Bradford man went missing, two men have been arrested in connection with his possible murder, as his wife asks for an end to her ‘nightmare’.

Sajid Saddique has not been seen since leaving his home, in Allerton, Bradford, on Valentine’s Day in 2007, travelling to a business meeting in Shipley.

Since then, a number of police investigations have taken place under a missing person’s inquiry yet new evidence found last week suggests that Mr Saddique was murdered.

A 62-year-old man from Bradford, and a 45-year-old man from Halifax, were arrested earlier this week on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and are currently in custody.

Mr Saddique’s wife, Asma, spoke to the Asian Express about how her life has not been the same since her husband went missing and how she

now hopes her ordeal is coming to an end.

She said: “We need closure and I hope this is it now. It has been an awful long time and a nightmare to live through.

“Something terrible has happened and someone is responsible for doing that to him – that’s what I have believed from day one and it is what I have said over the years.

“In my heart it feels like there is no hope because this person is gone.”

Mrs Saddique and her husband had been married for eight years and have three children together, aged seven, eight and 13.

It was during a routine business trip that Mr Saddique went missing and his wife recalls how she knew something ‘wasn’t right’ when he failed to pick up his daughter for nursery.

“I can remember the day quite clearly,” she explained. “His phone was switched off, I kept calling him and I couldn’t get through and I think at that point I knew something was wrong because his phone was never switched off.”

She added that the disappearance of her husband was also particularly hard for her eldest daughter, now 13, to deal with.

“She still remembers him,” Mrs Saddique said. “It has been extremely difficult for her.

“Recently she has started to finally open up a bit and be more confident at school but I just don’t want this news of the murder inquiry to take her back to where she was seven years ago.

“It has been horrible ever since that day and I just want an end to it all now.”

Following the obtainment of this latest information, police are once again appealing for help

West Yorkshire Detective Inspector Steve Snow, who is leading the investigation, said: “There has been a constant review of the evidence surrounding Sajid’s final movements...and now new information has come to the attention of the inquiry team, which sadly suggests he was murdered.

“Sajid was last seen in the car park of the Asda supermarket in Manor Road Shipley, at around 10.20am on 14th February 2007.

“Do you remember being in the area around that time or do you remember seeing anything suspicious? Do you remember seeing Sajid, or his car or a person

with that car in the car park?

“He also had a very distinctive, diamond-encrusted Cartier watch. Do you know anyone who currently has a watch like this, or who previously had one in their possession?

“We realise that seven years ago is a long time, and it's been an even longer time for Sajid's family who have lost a father, a husband and a brother.

“But regardless of how long this investigation lasts, we are committed to establishing the truth of what happened to Sajid, so that we can help to give his family some closure.

Hilly task conquered

More than £2,000 raised by fundraising runners A team of fundraisers from across England took on a mammoth challenge earlier this week as they conquered the hilly route from Halifax to Bradford – on foot.

The runners, and walkers, took on the 12km route in hope of raising money for the national charity, Islamic Relief, with all members completing the trek and in turn raising thousands for the cause.

Khwaja Arfan Mir organised the event and ran the course with a five kilogram weight on his back. Speaking after the tiresome day, he explained why it was so crucial that the money was raised and how he hoped to hold similar events in the near future.

“All the money raised from this day will go to the charity and help people who are suffering in Syria,” he said.

“I was hoping to raise as much money as possible so when I saw that we had passed the £2,000 mark it really was fantastic news.

It gives us more reason and motivation to repeat the event next year and maybe even make it into an annual thing.”

Khwaja completed the run alongside a host of family members and friends and said their support was vital in making the day a success.

“It was great to be able to run with so many people; including many from my own family,” he added. “Even my granddad came along to complete the run, albeit he did get his bus pass out for the trip up hill, but he was great.

“Whether they walked or ran it, everybody finished and enjoyed themselves.”

The team of runners all completed the route, from Halifax town centre to Centenary Square in Bradford, and received congratulatory medals upon arriving at their final destination.

The first placements have been a great success and as they’re nearly complete, the team are keen to show off the hard work and dedication that the volunteers have invested in the project.

This year’s extreme downpour has left many families homeless, causing millions of pounds worth of damage to businesses and personal properties.

And now, the Environment Agency has warned that the floods, which began in December and have affected almost 6,000 homes and businesses, may not yet be over.

The Muslim community is known for its generosity and

charity, with British followers of the faith raising funds to help people throughout the world when they are hit by a natural or man-made disaster.

With the latest disaster happening in the UK, Muslims of Leeds have launched a campaign to raise funds to help those who have been affected by severe floods.

Imam of Makkah Mosque, Qari Asim MBE, said he was proud to see Muslims uniting to help tackle such a problem which is happening so close to home.

New cycle path open Keen cyclists will have the chance to be the first to ride along a new cycle path when it opens on Saturday 8th March.

Wakefield Council, in partnership with the Wakefield District Cycle Forum, is ready to cut the ribbon on the Chevet Branch Line cycleway, creating a link between Pugneys Country Park and Anglers Country Park.

The 5km stretch was virtually impassable a year ago when weather conditions were poor.

A grant from Natural England’s Paths for Communities has been used to renovate the path, adding to a wealth of other cyclefriendly routes in the Wakefield district.

Wakefield Council and the Cycle Forum will cut the ribbon at 11.30am, and will host a gazebo on Wood Lane, Chapelthorpe, with maps and bikes to hire so that people can try out the path for themselves.

A new apprenticeship scheme is set to arrive in Bradford next week as the Council for Mosques launches its first ever Apprenticeship Hub. In partnership with City Training Services and West Yorkshire Learning Providers, the launch is set to take place on Wednesday 5th March at the Khidmat Centre, in the city.

Bradford University students call for Imran Khan to be sacked as Chancellor Serious discontent has grown among students of the University of Bradford over the constant absence of its vice chancellor Imran Khan.

Khan has been so embroiled in Pakistani politics that he hasn't attended a single graduation ceremony since 2010.

The University's student union has now floated a motion to drop the cricketing legend turned politician in Pakistan from the highest post. The motion, which was raised

by Mohsin Tanveer, will be voted on by the student's union next month.

Tanveer said: "Many students are unhappy with the fact that they have been denied the opportunity to engage with the chancellor on a regular basis."

Khan was

appointed to the post in December 2005 and is the fifth chancellor of the University since its inception in 1966.

The University defended Khan with its chief executive Professor Brian Cantor who runs the university asking students to show sympathy.

Cantor said: "Our chancellor has a major political role in Pakistan, a country which has serious problems with terrorism, education and poverty. “While I understand that it is frustrating for students that Khan has not attended an award ceremony at Bradford for some time, I have urged students to be sympathetic to the situation in Pakistan and the responsibility Khan has to improving the state of the country. “I have appealed to the better nature of our student body to be more supportive of the work Khan has to carry out as a politician."

A former consultant surgeon from the Worcestershire Royal Hospital is now part of a police investigation after a number of patients died in his care.

Sudip Sarker is currently being probed by police over the death of at least three of his patients, William Jones, 84, Daphne Taylor, 81, and Jean Thomas, 80, whose passing were subject of a joint inquest in December 2013.

Officers would not specify if there were any other incidents involved in the investigation, and said patient confidentiality meant no names could be

Mr Sarker, a colorectal surgeon, began working at the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust in August 2011 yet just over one year later, in October 2012, he was excluded.

He reportedly had double the death rate of other doctors at the hospital and one in five of his patients had to be readmitted after procedures he carried out.

Earlier that year, restrictions were understood to have been placed on him after the Royal College of Surgeons was asked by the Trust to review his clinical practice.

North Worcestershire Superintendent Kevin Purcell said the investigation began after police received a letter the same month as the inquests.

“We were made aware that there were a number of concerns in relation to the deaths of patients in 2012 who had been under Mr Sarker’s care,” Supt Purcell said.

“We are in the early stages of obtaining the relevant information from hospitals and other health organisations in order to conduct our investigation.”

He added that the families of the patients who were the subject of the inquest had been informed and updated on the situation.

“This is a complex matter which will undoubtedly take a considerable amount of time to investigate thoroughly,” he added.

“We are very mindful of the importance of patient

confidentiality and the impact on the wider community.

“We will continue to liaise with the key partner agencies involved and people can rest assured that we will be conducting our inquiries in a sensitive and appropriate manner as befitting an investigation of this nature.”

Leeds Bradford broadband connection voucher scheme launched Connection vouchers worth up to £3,000 are now available to small and medium-size businesses across Bradford and Leeds to cover the cost of upgrading to superfast broadband, offering Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) the opportunity to transform the way they do business.

Funded through the Government’s ‘Superconnected Cities’ programme, the connection vouchers are available to companies in the two cities, commencing 17th February.

The programme is being delivered locally by Leeds City Council and Bradford Metropolitan District Council and is part of a national programme, designed to deliver a step change in broadband connection speeds and reliability.

The programme covers 22 cities, with Leeds and Bradford securing a £10 million share – the largest outside London – of the total £100 million funding available for the programme.

Businesses can apply online for a connection voucher via a dedicated website (www.superconnectedleedsbradfor d.co.uk). The vouchers cover the installation cost up to a maximum of £3,000 with on-going monthly costs being paid for by the business.

The programme isn’t linked to any particular technology – wireless, fibre, cable, mobile and other types of connection are all covered by the programme.

Provided the business is an SME based in Leeds or Bradford, they should be eligible for a connection voucher.

Cllr David Green, Leader of Bradford Council, speaking ahead of the launch of the Superconnected Leeds Bradford programme, said: “Access to high speed broadband is crucial in a competitive global market and that is the environment our businesses now work and operate in.

“Securing an upgraded connection enables companies to share large data files and communicate more effectively with each other and with their customers. Ultimately it helps companies to grow and

prosper which in turn generates more jobs for local people and this benefits us all.”

Cllr Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council’s lead member for development and the economy, said: “The average UK business will need 10 times their current bandwidth within the next five years. This means that high speed broadband is becoming an absolute necessity for businesses. Support for SME businesses in our two cities is welcome and will help significantly improve productivity and competitiveness, in turn

helping to grow the local economy.”

Mark Goldstone of Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce said the latest Chamber research showed 92 per cent of companies see broadband as critical to their business: “Broadband is now considered by many to be as vital as electricity and running water and access to a high quality service is one of the key factors when companies look to expand or locate.

“High speed broadband is game changing and allows companies to think and operate differently.

Technologies such as cloud computing, for example, allow for more efficient use of resources to store and access data, freeing up capital which otherwise would have been invested in expensive server hardware and associated

costs.”

Simon Barrett of Bradford-based games development firm Four Door Lemon, said: “High speed internet is vital to our business. In a digital industry, deliveries to our customers – be it gamers or other businesses – are completely dependent on the speed of our connection to deliver updates.

“With quicker connections we can iterate faster when making improvements and adjustments to our products and therefore increase our productivity and profit.

This scheme is a very welcome benefit to companies in Leeds and Bradford and will help us be more competitive in the global market we operate in.”

Getting a foot on the property ladder Recent research carried out by a leading mortgage lender has revealed that UK homeowners spend an average £41,900 on rent before buying their first property and those who choose not to buy a property are likely to spend over £296,000 on rent in their lifetime.

These seem staggering figures, but at a time when many are struggling to get a foot on the property ladder perhaps we should not be too surprised.

The Government have introduced a number of new initiatives and the Help to Buy scheme can now be used by providers of Home Purchase Plans (HPP’s.) They are sometimes known as ‘Islamic mortgages’ and are a sharia law compliant alternative to traditional mortgages.

Music video forced to change after thousands sign petition

A music video by one of the world’s most popular artists has been forced to be edited after tens of thousands of signatures were gathered via an online petition, arguing that the clip was blasphemous.

Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse’ music video has received more than 30million views on YouTube yet it was the burning of jewellery, which appeared to show the word ‘Allah’ on it, that led to Shazad Iqbal launching the petition on change.org.

He wrote: “The video is considered as highly controversial to its viewers as a result of its portrayal of blasphemy.

“At 01:15 into the video Dark Horse; a man is shown being burned, whilst wearing a pendant (also burned) forming the word 'Allah', which is the Arabic word for God. “Such goes to show, that blasphemy is clearly conveyed in the video, since Katy Perry (who appears to be representing an opposition of God) engulfs the

believer and the word God in flames.

As well as signatories from the UK, people from countries including Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Morocco, Lebanon and the US, have also added their name to the petition, which had more than 65,000 names.

Over 125,000 people descended on Wakefield city centre for the eighth annual Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb.

Visitors were entertained by street performers, children’s activities, cooking demonstrations and live music as well as being tempted by local businesses offering tasty products to sample and buy.

Cllr David Dagger, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for Culture, said: “I am delighted that so many people have visited the city centre this weekend. The three days were a huge success and there was a real buzz around the city. We have had fantastic feedback on the festival from visitors and local businesses.

Tuesday morning.

They were taken to hospital, where the child sadly died of her injuries, whilst her mother remains in a critical condition. Police have confirmed that a post-mortem found that the infant had died of injuries consistent with a fall.

It is believed that two neighbours found the pair in the back garden of the end terrace house and called paramedics to the scene. The paramedics then called police who broke down the front door as to gain access through the house.

Neighbours on the street, just off the busy Manchester Road, said they didn’t even know that anybody was living in the house until the bodies were carried out by paramedics.

20-year-old neighbour, Hamzah Rana, said: “I didn’t even know that anyone was living there until that morning. As far as I know about four or five months ago the occupants moved out and since then I thought the house was empty.

“I just heard a loud bang and

looked out of my window and saw ambulance and police outside and they were breaking the door down.

“After that the paramedics were carrying a little girl out and about ten minutes later a woman in her mid-30s was carried into the ambulance.”

Mr Rana has lived on the street all his life and said the incident has shocked the local community. He added: “It is a shock; we are just a quiet street. Everybody is friendly here and we all get along so it is of course the first time that anything like this has happened.”

Noreen Haque, 35, lives in the house next door to the mother and said she was scared to be in her home at the moment.

“I didn’t really know her, I just said hello a couple of times,” she said.

“She moved in a few months ago, with her child and said she was moving with her husband but I never saw anyone.

“She told me she was from

India and had been born in the UK and was not a strange lady, she just seemed normal.”

She added: “The whole incident has come as a big shock. I checked on my children last night while they were sleeping, it has scared me.”

Labour councillor for the Little Horton area, Cllr Sher Khan, has lived in the area all his life and said it was shock for the whole community.

“It is devastating news,” he said.

“I know everybody in this area and on this street but nobody really knew the woman, who seems to have moved in around three or four months ago.

“I only know what everybody else is saying but it is very shocking for the whole city.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, yet asked anybody who had any information to contact them on 101.

National Citizen Awards A host of young people from Leeds have been awarded for their part in a national citizenship scheme at a glitzy ceremony in the city.

The group of 16 and 17-year-olds attended the awards ceremony at the Met hotel where they received certificates for completing the National Citizen Awards programme from the deputy leader of Leeds City Council, Cllr Judith Blake.

As part of this voluntarily attended scheme, staffed by Leeds City Council’s youth service, the young people worked over the autumn leading on delivering a variety of well-deserved local community projects.

Amongst those initiatives were a Mental Health Awareness event, running a football tournament for 50 young people in Kippax, organising a health and fitness sessions for young people, and sharing experiences through discussions with older people in care homes in Rothwell.

Their hard work amounted to approximately £16,000 worth of time devoted to community projects.

Councillor Judith Blake, who is also executive member for children’s services, was delighted with the success of the programme and the enthusiasm shown by the teens.

“These young people are setting

Young volunteers receive special praise for voluntary projects an excellent example to us all and demonstrating that hard work really does pay off,” she said.

“By taking part in this scheme the young people have taken on

some big challenges, but have come away with new skills and experiences, which will undoubtedly help them in their future careers.”

At the event, the young people were also joined by councillors, parents and BBC Look North

presenter Harry Gration.

A total of 221 young people completed the scheme this year with 176 young people graduating at a Town Hall event, just before Christmas for the summer programme, and 45 more at this month’s ceremony.

A Bradford sixth form student will be rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in the world next month as he speaks in front of thousands at the first ever We Day UK. Mohammed Usman, 17, from Great Horton, Bradford, was selected to speak alongside the likes of Sir Richard Branson, Al Gore and Ellie Goulding, at the upcoming exhibition at Wembley Arena which aims to motivate young people across the globe.

With 26 countries participating, including a group of students from Bradford’s own Grange Technology College, the day has been organised to reward youths, such as Mohammed, who encourage social change.

No tickets could be purchased for the inaugural event, rather invitations were handed out to schools and groups who had completed ‘We Acts’ throughout the past 12 months.

Speaking alongside some of the most influential people in the world may be daunting for some, yet for Mohammed, it is a task he eagerly looks forward to.

“It is something I’ve always wanted to do, talk to younger people and helping to inspire them so to have the opportunity at such a young age is really good,” he said.

“I feel happy and honoured at the same time at being able to speak alongside the likes of Sir Richard Branson but also a little bit nervous speaking in front of 14,000 people so it is mixed emotions.”

Mohammed will be tasked with speaking about his time in the Barclays Life Skills programme, which led him to work with charities, Feed the Children and Mother Helpage Worldwide.

The programme acts as a platform for

Year Six to Year 12 students to develop key skills such as communication and confidence before being given the opportunity to take up work placements.

Speaking about the moment he got the call to say he had been nominated to publicly address the crowd of thousands, Mohammed said he was ‘shocked’ and ‘delighted’.

“It was only about two or three weeks ago that I actually got a call to say my name had been put forward to speak at the Wembley event,” he explained.

“I never put myself forward but rather was selected and then received a phone interview from the Toronto team of Free the Children, the main organisers of We Day. “After having a talk with them on the phone, explaining my own experiences, I then heard I got the place a week or so later.”

He added: “I was really proud and told my parents that I had the opportunity, and they were obviously delighted and are always very supportive.”

It won’t be the first time that Mohammed has been chosen to represent his age group on the international stage having attended a United Nations conference in New York a couple of years ago.

That time, the young fundraiser raised more than £2,000, on his own, to help the Mother Helpage Worldwide charity.

Attending a conference in the US, and then discussing and implementing ways to tackle youth problems were just some for the roles the teenager had to tackle.

“The UN was a really good experience so to have the opportunity to attend another major event, like We Day UK, is amazing,” the sixth form senior ambassador explained.

“I am looking forward to it now and come the 7th March, I will be ready to address the huge audience.”

Tobacco traders handed fines

Two illegal tobacco traders have been ordered to pay substantial fines following prosecution by Sheffield City Council Trading Standards.

278 packs of contraband cigarettes and 23 packs of hand rolling tobacco were seized from two shops during an operation in which seven retail premises were visited by Sheffield City Council Trading Standards, South Yorkshire Police and two sniffer dogs.

Mr Hessen Por of Veeno’s Supermarket, London Road, pleaded guilty to five specimen offences under the Trade Marks Act and was fined £150 and ordered to pay £725 towards costs.

February 2014 - 4th Edition The UK has more obese women than any other country in Europe, according to European Union figures.

Data agency Eurostat, which looked at 19 countries, found nearly a quarter of UK women - 23.9 per cent - were recorded as being obese in the year 2008 to 2009.

Just over 22 per cent of UK men were classed as obese, coming second only to Malta.

A person is defined as obese if their body mass index (BMI), the result of a calculation involving weight and height, is above a certain level.

The BMI correlates fairly well with body fat.

Statisticians found the share of overweight and obese people increases with age in all of the 19 member states that data was available for.

The data come from the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) and was published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

Its figures for the UK were based on data from England, although surveys suggest the percentage of obese adults in Wales and Northern Ireland is similar and Scotland's latest health report put the figure at 28 per cent.

After the UK, the countries with the highest levels of female obesity were Malta, with

21.1 per cent, and Latvia, where 20.9 per cent fulfilled that criteria.

Meanwhile, after Malta and the UK, the countries with the highest instances of male obesity were Hungary - where 21.4 per cent fall into that category - and the Czech Republic, where 18.4 per cent are classed as such.

The UK's high levels of obesity are in stark contrast to those in countries such as Romania, where just 8 per cent of women were classed as obese along with 7.6 per cent of men.

Obesity levels were also found to be low in Italy, Bulgaria and France.

In Italy, 9.3 per cent of women were found to be obese and 11.3 per cent men.

Meanwhile, in Bulgaria levels of obesity for women and men were found to be 11.3 per cent and 11.6 per cent, with levels of France identified as being 12.7 per cent and 11.7 per cent respectively.

The figures suggested that the proportion of women who are obese or overweight falls as the educational level rises.

Last month, Health Secretary Andrew Lansley launched a bid to reduce obesity levels in England by 2020.

The minister said people need to be honest with themselves about how much they eat and drink.

He said that, overall, Britons should be eating five billion fewer calories a day than at present.

Bradford East MP, David Ward, has surveyed over 2,500 businesses in Bradford and discovered that a significant 36.22 per cent thought that leaving the EU would have direct negative effects for their company with an overwhelming 84 per cent of those surveyed believing that staying in the EU would be in Britain’s best interests.

The results from David’s business survey also show that measures introduced by the Liberal Democrats in Government have been significantly beneficial to businesses in Bradford.

David’s survey was sent to over 2,500 businesses from a variety of different industries across his Bradford East constituency. The survey asked a range of questions on significant issues that might affect business in Bradford.

The businesses survey ranged from those who had 0-250 employees and included businesses from an assortment of sectors such as retail, textiles, process and manufacturing and construction.

The results from the survey showed that, of businesses who answered: • An overwhelming 84.17 per cent believe that staying in the EU would be in Britain’s best interests.

• 36.22 per cent think that if Britain left the EU this would directly negatively affect their business, and in some cases even cause their business to close.

• 60.19 per cent believe that Britain should focus on building further trade links with the EU/the European Economic Area.

“However, as this survey shows, the benefits of the UK being within the European Union are unquestionable. Around half our trade and nearly half of our foreign direct investment comes from other EU member states, 3.5 million UK

jobs are linked to our trade with the EU and our membership of the EU brings an average net benefit of a whopping £3000 for every household each year.

“The surveys also show that several measures the Liberal Democrats have implemented in government to aid businesses have been extremely significant for businesses in Bradford and have encouraged growth.

“I will continue to coordinate and work with businesses and the local community in Bradford to make sure I bring about a stronger economy for my constituents.”

Commenting Yorkshire and Humber MEP, Edward MacmillanScott said: “The business survey from David shows that we cannot ignore the message from major employers about how important the EU is for jobs and growth.

“Also a major survey by The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) in November last year showed that eight out of ten British companies want to stay in the EU. Both claim that leaving Europe would put millions of British jobs at risk.

“In addition, a YouGov poll showed that 4,641 businesses in Yorkshire & Humber would be forced to close if the UK pulls out, resulting in potential job losses of up to 124,790.

“These figures are just a reminder of how important the EU is for Britain and why the Liberal Democrats are on the winning side of what's right for Britain. Even though we agree that the EU needs reforms, we are the party on the side of business. We are the party of ‘in’.”

Temple Newsam will not play host to a 2014 concert

After 20 years of concerts, Leeds’ annual Party in the Park event has officially been cancelled after the cost of operating the day has become too much for organisers.

The budgetary pressures on both organisers, Leeds City Council and Radio Aire, to host and produce the event are significant; with organisers stating that the only way to continue the ‘Party’ would be to introduce significantly higher ticket prices.

As Leeds City Council and Radio Aire remain committed to keeping ticket prices as affordable as possible for Leeds residents, the event will take a break in 2014. Leeds City Council and Radio Aire hope to continue their long-standing relationship through other event opportunities in the future.

The council is also considering the implications and potential options around the annual Opera in the Park and Classical Fantasia events. A further announcement regarding both concerts will be made once all options have been investigated by the council.

A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “It is with great regret that we are no longer able to work with Radio Aire to deliver Party in the Park in 2014 and we thank Radio Aire for all their hard work and support in helping us organise this event in previous years.

“We will be continuing to look at every option available to us both in the shortterm and long-term around Opera in the Park and Classical Fantasia, and also as part of this work, be considering other events that could in the future be potentially held in our city.”

HS2 building should begin in Leeds

City leaders met with HS2 chiefs last week to lobby for construction of the new high-speed rail link to begin in Leeds.

The HS2 board, chaired by recently appointed Sir David Higgins current chief executive of Network Rail, visited Leeds as a first port-of-call for wider consultations about HS2 to hear the city’s mandates.

A strong case to begin building HS2 from the North was put to the board by the Leeds delegation led by Leeds City Council Leader, Councillor Keith Wakefield, which was warmly welcomed by Sir David Higgins.

Senior councillors believe the start date of 2027 for the link to Leeds is too far away and must be brought forward by starting construction in Leeds – allowing the region to begin making the most of economic benefits and new construction jobs sooner.

With over 900 trains and 100,000 passengers everyday using the North’s busiest railway station at Leeds it is expected economic benefits from early HS2 investment would ripple out across the region carried by a network of improved transport links.

Leeds City Council Councillor and Metro chair James Lewis said: “Highspeed rail is an incredible opportunity for Leeds with the potential to create thousands of new job and homes – an opportunity on a scale we have never seen before.

“HS2 has unwavering support from Leeds. We are very enthusiastic to welcome high-speed rail to Leeds and have tightly integrated it into our ambitious regeneration plans for the city.

“Leeds has a projected rail user growth of almost 70 per cent by 2029 for this very reason alone it makes sense to start engineering and construction of HS2 right here.

“However we are concerned the route needs to be right to benefit our region and we’re asking the board to revisit this. Today was a chance to demonstrate our commitment to doing all we can to ensure we get the best possible benefits for our city and our region.”

Fresh investment thanks to a proposed iconic new railway station in Leeds is being seen as a catalyst for regeneration of the south bank area.

Leeds also heard more about HS2’s plans to provide a college that would train people to work on the rail project and voiced its aspiration for the new

college to be built in the Leeds city region.

The HS2 board’s visit was further marked by the launch of a programme recruiting business ambassador’s. The programme sees local businesses pledge their support to HS2 while helping to keep people informed about the positive impact high-speed rail would have on their lives.

An educative application has been developed and launched by a Keighley resident who hopes to tackle some of the biggest issues surrounding the taboo subject of sexual grooming.

It is a problem which affects all communities and is tackled by police officers on a daily basis, yet the fact of the matter is that sexual grooming continues to take place away from the public eye.

Shakeel Aziz, a youth worker from Bradford, decided he would tackle the problem from its early stages, and so launched the SGA app to warn of signs which suggest a child is being groomed.

The phone application is available to download for your mobile device and provides short, concise to the point information and awareness on the crime of sexual grooming in a question and answer format.

For Shakeel, the chance to help raise awareness on such a difficult subject is something he believes must be taken, and explained how the app was developed.

“As a youth development worker, any issues which involve the development and protection of young people is close to my heart,”

he said.

“This specific issue I have been working on for many years on the foundations of basic youth development work on 'Sex and Relationships Education'.

“Technically, me and many other youth workers have been working on this subject way before the high profile grooming cases hit the media headlines.

“I believe it is a moral responsibility for us all to tackle and challenge social problems in any way we can, and for me, as a Muslim, it is my religious duty to confront problems and social challenges.”

Research done prior to the launch of the app highlighted the need to create awareness of the signs of sexual grooming according to Shakeel.

Many families, whose children had fallen victim to the crime, were apparently unaware of the signs which could be spotted, whilst research also showed that many young people themselves were oblivious to the matter.

Not only does Shakeel hope that the app will be used by parents, but also insists that the technology could be utilised perfectly in schools to alert all demographics in society.

He said: “I hope it will be used by anyone and everyone in our societies. Sexual grooming is an

“I hope that schools, national charities and organisations will use the app to firstly equip themselves with the information, and then break down the information for young people.”

They all told their stories with different levels of fluency; it was really very heartwarming to see how much effort goes into this important work, both from QED, their lovely teacher and the participants.”

She added: “The courses are part funded by the European Union. The story of Europe is a story of integration. In order to make the most of the opportunities and possibilities for residents of the EU there has to be a capacity to integrate, that starts with language.”

rospective Muslim homebuyers will now be able to use a Shari’a compliant alternative to mortgages following an announcement made by the Treasury.

Paying interest to a lender under a traditional mortgage arrangement is prohibited by Shari’a law. Islamic banks instead offer Home Purchase Plans (“HPPs”), under which ownership of a home is split between the customer and the bank.

The homeowner buys a portion of the property outright with their initial deposit and then pays regular instalments to the bank covering rent for the portion they do not own and an ‘acquisition payment’. It means they gradually buy the property from the bank and over time become the sole owner.

The government has now amended the rules governing the scheme to allow banks that sell HPPs to purchase a government guarantee for them. The Islamic Bank of Britain has become the first lender to announce its intention to participate in the scheme. Treasury minister Sajid Javid stated:“I am delighted Home Purchase Plans will now be available under the Help to Buy scheme, this gives even more choice to hardworking families across the UK trying to fulfil their home owning aspirations.”

The announcement from the Treasury comes in the wake of the UK planning to become the first non-Muslim county to offer

Sukuk (Islamic Bonds) for trade. Sukuk are financial instruments that are similar to government-issued sovereign bonds. Shari’a finance prohibits riba (interest) and does not allow one party to make financial gains unjustly at the expense of another party.

These Islamic bonds adhere to the principles of Islamic law as they pay investors a fixed return based on the profit generated by an underlying asset.

David Cameron at the World Islamic Economic Forum last year told delegates that the issue of Sukuk in 2014 would be worth in the region of £200 million with input from industry. Ex Guantanamo Bay inmate held for suspected Syria terrorism offences A former Guantanamo Bay prisoner was among four Britons arrested on Tuesday 25th February on suspected terrorism offences related to Syria, police said.

Moazzam Begg, 45, who was released without charge from Guantanamo Bay in 2005, was detained at his home in Birmingham on suspicion of attending a terrorist training camp and facilitating terrorism overseas.

Begg was held by the US government at Bagram detention centre in Afghanistan then Guantanamo Bay for nearly three years after being arrested in Pakistan in February 2002 suspected of being a member of al-Qaeda.

Better care for mental health crisis A new agreement between police and the NHS seeks to improve mental health crisis care for Black and Minority Ethnic groups Emergency support for people in mental health crises is set to dramatically improve as part of a far-reaching new agreement between police, mental health trusts and paramedics.

The agreement – called the Crisis Care Concordat – has been signed by more than 20 national organisations in a bid to drive up standards of care for people experiencing crisis and help cut the numbers of people detained inappropriately in police cells and iron out the variation in standards across the country.

There are stark inequalities in the acute sector of mental health care for people from some BME groups who continue to be overrepresented in hospital and as detained patients and in crisis care overall.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said: “A mental health crisis can already be distressing for individuals and all those involved, but when people aren’t getting the right support or care it can have very serious consequences.

It’s unacceptable that there are incidents where young people and even children can end up in a police cell because the right mental health service isn’t available to them.

“That’s why we’re taking action across the country and across organisations to make sure those with mental health problems are receiving the emergency care they need.

“We want to build a fairer society – one where mental health is as important as physical health – and the Crisis Care Concordat is an important step towards addressing this disparity.”

Norman Lamb, Care and Support Minister, said: “When someone has a mental health crisis, it is distressing and frightening for them as well as the people around them.

Urgent and compassionate care in a safe place is essential – a police cell should never need to be used because mental health services are not available. A leading infertility clinic is appealing for women from Asian communities to consider becoming egg donors, after a marked increase in the number of Asian women asking for their help to have a baby.

Private infertility clinic Manchester Fertility, which is based in Cheadle Royal Business Park, currently has ten Asian women waiting for an egg donor.

Normally, women needing donor eggs can be treated immediately as there are no waiting lists for women seeking treatment using Caucasian donor eggs.

Lee Rigby killers sentenced

Michael Adebolajo — a Muslim convert who beheaded British soldier Lee Rigby with a meat cleaver in broad daylight on 22nd May 2013 has been given life imprisonment, whilst his fellow assailant, Michael Adebowale, has been ordered to spend 45 years in prison.

Judge Nigel Sweeney at the Old Bailey sentenced the two men for murdering soldier Lee Rigby near Woolwich barracks in southeast London.

Michael Adebolajo, 29, and Michael Adebowale, 22 first drove into and ran over Fusilier Rigby with a car before hacking him to death in May last year.

The sentencing had been delayed because the judge wanted clarification on a European ruling that made it uncertain whether whole-life jail terms could still be imposed. The pair were absent during sentencing after a scuffle in the dock.

Britain advised to raise minimum wage

Britain's minimum wage should increase by more than the rate of inflation for the first time in more than five years, government advisors recommended, helping low earners regain a little of the ground they have lost to a rising cost of living.

Britain's Low Pay Commission (LPC) has proposed a three percent increase in Britain's minimum wage, which would be the first above-inflation increase since 2008, the government said on Wednesday.

The government usually accepts the commission's recommendations.

A spokesman for Prime Minister David said the government will want to take time to consider the LPC's proposal.

£2.5million to enter the UK Wealthy foreigners may soon be able to gain fast track citizenship and the right to settle in Britain.

Britain's Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has now recommended to the government that foreign millionaires should be allowed to submit sealed bids to win residence visas for Britain. They would have to pay a minimum of £2.5 million each to enter an auction for one of 100 elite investor visas.

At present, about 500 migrants a year are given residence visas in return for investing a minimum of £1million.

But the MAC says there is little or no gain to UK residents from the investor route and hence has recommended raising the amount to £2 million.

The MAC said: “A further reform might involve auctioning some slots. At present it is not possible to determine the optimal price - investment threshold - for a visa under the Tier 1 (Investor) route. One approach to determining the price would be to auction a certain number of slots, say 100, with a reserve price a little above the investment threshold (recommended to be £2 million), perhaps £2.5 million.”

Muslim prisoner loses court appeal

A Muslim serving life for robbery has failed in a High Court challenge arising out of his refusal to undergo a drugs test in prison during a religious fast.

Tony Eguakhide, an inmate at Gartree Prison in Leicestershire, argued it was unreasonable and unlawful to test him during the religious festival of Yaum Ashurah - or other Muslim festivals like Ramadan - without proper consideration being given to a test taking place outside the fasting period.

Rejecting Eguakhide's application for judicial review, Mr Justice Bean ruled that to allow his challenge ‘would be to undermine the random nature of the drugtesting programme’.

The judge said the programme, and its random nature, were essential because the possession and use of illegal drugs in UK prisons was ‘rife’ and a very serious problem.

Pakistan announces first ever counter-terror policy Pay for the right to be Christian

Pakistan this week unveiled its first ever counter-terrorism policy after battling a homegrown Islamist insurgency for more than a decade, announcing that every act of militant violence would be met with retaliation on their bases.

Interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan announced the "national security policy" before parliament a day after it was formally approved by the cabinet, ending years of waiting for a set of unified rules of engagement for terrorism.

The move comes as talks between the government and the Taliban that began earlier this month have stalled following the killing of 23 soldiers being held by the militants.

Pakistan has responded by carrying out a series of deadly air strikes in the northwest that have left over 100 militants dead.

Khan said the shelling was in line with the government's new policy and that strikes would continue alongside efforts to negotiate with the Taliban.

"We have made a significant shift in our policy, now we will react to each and every act of terrorism in the country with an attack on the headquarters of the militants along the Afghan border," he said.

"Whenever there is a strike anywhere, we will the target headquarters of the militants and it's because of this new policy that we have been carrying out precise strikes in the tribal areas."

Commenting on the status of the dialogue between the government and Taliban representatives, Khan said talks have been put on hold but would "resume anytime soon and both negotiations and targeted strikes will go hand in hand".

The policy document is 100 pages long and is split into three parts, one of which would remain secret, said the minister.

The document designates the National Counter Terrorism Authority as the body that will deal with nationwide intelligence reports.

"We are establishing a rapid response force, which will be fully equiped with helicopters and latest technology to carry out counter terrorism operations," Khan added.

Security experts have long called for rapid response teams to deal with terror incidents in crowded urban environments and track down militants.

Since 2007 the Pakistani Taliban have been waging a bloody campaign against the Pakistani state which has claimed thousands of lives.

The umbrella militant group was founded in response to a raid on a radical mosque in Islamabad, but Islamist violence in the country began surging after the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

Attempts by previous governments at formulating a national security policy have floundered over a lack of consensus and political will.

Data reveals Indians paid to live in UK

Around 44 Indians paid over £1 million to win the right to live in Britain between 2008 and 2013.

Data revealed by Britain's Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) revealed that millionaire Indians were fifth commonest nationality who have come to UK since 2008.

MAC chairman Sir David Metcalf said the government had effectively been "giving away" visas to some of the world's wealthiest people.

Around 38 Pakistanis have also bought their right to British citizenship during the same period.

At present, about 500 migrants a year are given residence visas in return for investing a minimum of £1 million. The UK has operated a migration route for investors and their families since 1994.

Girls schools would be established in Balochistan's backward and farflung areas.

“Global Partnership has already decided to provide 34 million dollars in this regard,” Sanaullah Panezai, Unicef's Balochistan chief on education told Dawn.com on Tuesday.

Moreover, adviser to the Chief Minister Balochistan on Education, Sardar Raza Muhammad Bareech, stated that the education department has evolved a strategy with the financial and technical support of Unicef and other organisations to make sure provision of education to children of the province.

“Our government's priority is education,” he said, adding that all out efforts were being made to ensure early childhood education in the province.

He stated that Global Partnership has committed the amount to educate kids of Balochistan.

Sardar Bareech said that the recently prepared Balochistan Education Sector Plan was endorsed by all donor agencies and organisations working for the promotion of education in the country.

“The data about schools would be web-based so that everyone could access it,” the Unicef education chief stated.

The amount would also be spent on establishment of shelters of schools and provision of clean drinking water to kids in the province.

Asiana Airlines fined $500,000 US regulators have fined Asiana Airlines $500,000 (£300,000) for failing to help victims of a flight crash last year at San Francisco's airport.

Three people died and dozens were injured when Asiana Flight 214 crashed on 6th July 2012.

India’s regional parties seal alliance ahead of elections India regional parties met on Tuesday to declare a political alternative to the two main national parties, the ruling Congress and the main opposition Bharatiya Janata (BJP), ahead of national elections due by May. Congress has led coalition governments in the world's largest democracy for the past decade but may struggle to win re-election this year due to a string of corruption scandals and sagging economic growth. The BJP is forecast to emerge as the single largest party but still fall short of a majority.

Eleven regional parties have established an alliance to fight corruption, deliver more economic development and strengthen federalism in the run-up to the elections.

“It is time for a change and to throw out the Congress from power. The BJP, which claims to be the alternative, has no policies different from that of the Congress,” the regional party group said in a joint declaration.

It described BJP ideology as divisive and communal, and offered up their grouping as a ‘secular’ alternative.

Regional parties and their often charismatic leaders have become more powerful national players in recent years.

Parties other than Congress and the BJP are

Indian Navy Cheif resigns India's navy chief resigned on Wednesday, taking ‘moral responsibility’ for a spate of recent maritime accidents including one off Mumbai's coast earlier in the day that saw two sailors missing and seven others injured.

Smoke was detected aboard a Russian-built submarine in the latest accident, which came after 18 naval crew were killed last August when another fully-armed submarine exploded in flames and sank in a military shipyard in Mumbai.

“Taking moral responsibility for the accidents and incidents which have taken place during the past few months, the Chief of Naval Staff Admiral D.K. Joshi today resigned,” a defence ministry statement said.

“The Government has accepted the resignation of Admiral Joshi with immediate effect.”

Seven sailors suffered breathing problems after trying to contain smoke which filled the living quarters of the INS Sindhuratna during a training exercise on Wednesday, according to the navy.

They were airlifted from the submarine to hospital for treatment and navy ships were dispatched to help the vessel, said Narendra Kumar Vispute, a spokesman for the defence

ministry.

The incident took place between 6am and 7am. The crew contained the smoke but seven of them had to be airlifted by naval helicopters.

Two crew members are still missing from the Russian-built Sindhuratna, which was still seaworthy after the incident and was returning to port in Mumbai, the navy said.

The missing pair might have been left in the cabin or at some other place as various cabins and compartments are isolated as part of the emergency measures.

An inquiry was underway into the cause of Wednesday's accident, which a navy spokesman blamed on sparks in the accommodation cabin.

The deadly accident in August, on the INS Sindhurakshak, was thought to be the Indian Navy's worst disaster since the sinking of a frigate by a Pakistani submarine during a war with its neighbour in 1971.

Last month a third submarine, INS Sindhughosh, ran aground while returning to Mumbai harbour. No loss of life or damage was reported.

Following Joshi's resignation, his deputy Vice Admiral R.K. Dhowan will take charge pending a new appointment, the defence ministry statement said.

The Indian navy has 14 submarines, but only between seven and nine are operational at any one time because of regular repair and refitting.

Gateway House, a Mumbaibased foreign policy think-tank, called the latest naval accident ‘unfortunate’ and urged policy makers to pay closer attention to the Indian naval fleet.

“Delays in the acquisition of new submarines coupled with a deficient and ageing fleet of submarines are taking its toll on the operational capabilities of the Indian navy,” said security expert Sameer Patil of Gateway House.

INS Sindhuratna is a kilo-class submarine which normally operates with a crew of 53 and can sail on its own for 45 days, the Indian navy website says.

The submarine had only been handed back to the navy in December after undergoing a major refit, according to local reports.

It had been undergoing exercises off the Mumbai coast as part of a clearance process for full operations when the incident occurred.

In February 2010 the Sindhurakshak suffered a fire while docked in Visakhapatnam city in southern India, killing a 24-year-old.

Mallika Sherawat to lead gender debate at famous Oxford Union

Mallika Sherawat, who’s constantly making headlines for her tenacity and bold outlook, seems to be adding another feather in her designer cap.

The Indian actress has been extended an honour from the Oxford Union (Oxford University), to participate in a debate titled 'This House Believes Gender Exists to Oppress'.

The Oxford Union is a much renowned platform for people to express their views. Mallika will

be hosting some of the most influential people in the world and lending an interesting angle to the debate with her image of women and women’s rights in India.

A spokesperson from the Oxford Union commented: “We feel that as a figure who recently was very outspoken about the image of women and women’s rights in a country like India, Mallika would lend an interesting angle to the debate.”

An enthusiastic Mallika states, "Yes, I have accepted the invitation. The date is set on Feb 27th. A lot of preparation is required. It's a great honour.

“I come from a small town, so it means a lot to be invited to speak at such a historic venue. I can use the platform to highlight issues like drop in the conviction rate in rape cases across the country."

Actress Madhuri Dixit, who has shared the screen space with both superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, says she admires the passion both the actors have for their work.

Madhuri, who worked with Shah Rukh in hit films like 'Dil To Pagal Hai' and 'Devdas', also performed with him during a recent tour 'Temptations Reloaded' in Malaysia.

"I really had a great time working with Shah Rukh Khan. He recently got his leg injured but still he has so much strength in him.

“I don't know from where he gets the strength and energy. He is always on fire and goes all out to be the best for his fans. He is very

passionate and dedicated about his work even today," Madhuri said.

She is also amazed with the work that her other former co-star Salman is doing these days.

"I loved Salman in his earlier films like 'Saajan', 'Andaz Apna Apna', 'Hum Apke Hai Kaun!'

“I see a completely different Salman now.

“Earlier on in his career, he was very mischievous but today he is more relaxed and wants to do good work. I find he is a lot more committed," Madhuri said.

"When you see him doing a character of Chulbul Pandey, there is a different maturity that he brings into it. I love his dancing too, he has got his own style and a

swagger, which is really wonderful."

She added that she’d love to do a ‘masala’ entertainer with Salman, provided she is offered one.

Surprisingly, Madhuri disclosed, that she doesn’t have any real close friends in Bollywood. The actress, who has been a star of Hindi cinema for 30 years, said that actors are too busy to forge close bonds.

The 46-year-old star, who took a break from films after she got married and had children, has recently starred in ‘Dedh Ishqiya’ and forthcoming ‘’Gulaab Gang’.

She said: "Age is just a number according to me, talent is the same whether you are 10, 20 or 100. I think it gets better with age. I also

don't believe in the myth about married actresses. I think it is crazy.

"Sharmila Tagore worked after marriage, Rakhiji worked after marriage. Yes, some of them quit but that was their own decision.

There were so many who did work.

There are no hard and fast rules," she explained.

Madhuri, however, feels women now have a bigger say in the industry compared to earlier times and the advent of female directors and scriptwriters has resulted in stronger roles for women in Bollywood.

"The new age directors see women in a different light and write good roles for women. They are no longer caricatures of say an avenger, a victim, or an eye candy.

They are people, they are characters."

Madhuri, who won praise for her

performance in Dedh Ishqiya and leads a starry cast in the heroinecentric Gulaab Gang, said that she relies on her talent, rather than networking, to win roles.

"I wasn't networking when I was offered Gulaab Gang or Dedh Ishqiya. That came to me on the strength of my abilities, because I have talent to play these roles.

"And filmmakers know that when I do a film, I am very committed to the role. I am well-disciplined. So my reputation precedes me and that's why makers come to me with the scripts. And not because they are my friends," she added.

Dixit's ‘Gulaab Gang’ co-star Juhi Chawla recently admitted to a rivalry with the actress at the peaks of their careers, but added that she is now thrilled to have a chance to work with Dixit.

The story of Gulaab Gang is reportedly based on the life of Sampat Pal Devi, a self trained activist from Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh who was married off as a child and then grew up to fight social evils like dowry, child marriage, domestic violence in the villages of India.

In course of time, many women joined her and now she has a force of over 10,000 women who are called the Gulabi Gang.

A few years back, with some help from a French NGO, Sampat's fight came into the limelight leading to media coverage and a documentary filmed on her.

In the trailers, like we had assumed, Dixit kicks ass.

She is shown wielding a baton

with a ferocity normally associated with Salman Khan or Akshay Kumar. She is seen flinging men with one effortless slap. She is seen beating up men.

Evidently, Sampat's story has been adapted to suit the requirements of a Bollywood entertainer. Likewise, Dixit is also seen dancing (we are not complaining one bit about that though!).

However, what is probably the most refreshing and interesting bit in the trailer is its villain - Juhi Chawla. Yes, you heard right.

Juhi is indeed who Madhuri is pitted against in the film. And oh boy, isn't she delicious as the soft spoken, nearly-adorable, baby voiced woman whose smile is pure evil gold!

Juhi seems to be playing the part of a politician who takes on Rajjo

(Madhuri) and embarks on an insidious journey to destroy the latter's clout.

What makes the film so much more interesting than anything else, is instead of a woman versus man stereotypical battle, Gulaab Gang promises to be a deft exploration of feminity and the woman as an ambitious, strong, sinister, vulnerable entity.

While Madhuri turns out to be a real hero with all her brave action sequences, Juhi Chawla has also amazed people with her cunning politician avtar in the movie. With all those bold dialogues and action, the movie is going to be one of the valiant choices of both the Bollywood divas, as far as their filmy career is concerned.

With direct injection and variable camshaft phasing, its 2.0litre turbo petrol engine is the most powerful four-cylinder unit Vauxhall has ever produced. The all-aluminium engine is mated to six-speed manual gearbox transmitting power through a limited-slip differential.

The car is 100kg lighter than a

standard Astra VXR thanks to its high-quality, carbon fibre components. This high-strength, ultra-light material is used for the aerodynamically-optimised rear wing, the diffuser, front spoiler, bonnet, suspension cross-bracing, engine cover, wheels, rear wheelhouse ventilation and roof.

Noticeably lowering the Extreme’s centre of gravity is the in-house manufactured carbon fibre roof which weighs just 2.6kg, compared with a steel roof’s 9.3kg.

of 2.2kg in steel. Weight reduction in key areas greatly improves agility, overall handling and the car’s power-to-weight ratio.

Vauxhall has also given the Extreme exceptional stopping power to match, with a Brembo sixpiston brake system including 370mm diameter discs up front race car. Ultra high-performance, 245/35, 19-inch tyres, specially developed for the Extreme, also play a key role and give almost as much grip as those on the race car.

Inside the Extreme, the back seats have been taken out and a safety roll bar put in their place.

Extreme also gets Recaro bucket seats, with six-point safety belts from Schroth and a carbon-fibrereinforced, suede-covered steering wheel with fine yellow decorative stitching.

The Astra VXR is now the bestselling VXR and the UK remains the largest market in Europe for Vauxhall and Opel’s highest powered models.

Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake super estate revealed

Jaguar unveils a more potent version of its most practical model, the XFRS Sportbrake is powered by a 542bhp 5.0-litre supercharged V8.

Jaguar has kept us guessing about whether it would build a highperformance XF Sportbrake, but we now have an emphatic answer.

Rather than simply building a XFR Sportbrake, Jaguar has skipped straight to XFR-S specification for the most practical model in its range.

Set to arrive at the Geneva Motor Show, the Sportbrake joins the XFR-S Saloon and XKRS as the third member of the ballistic R-S family.

Like its siblings it uses a 542bhp 5.0-litre supercharged V8 producing 680Nm of torque – enough to rocket it from 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds, 0.2 seconds slower than the XFR-S Saloon, and on to an identical top speed of 186mph, despite weighing

around 90kg more.

Jaguar’s designers have translated the Saloon’s pumped up styling into the Sportbrake’s more sensible bodystyle, minus the wild rear wing of course. It does get a much smaller roof spoiler though, along with a deeper front bumper and front splitter to boost downforce at high speeds.

Extended and more sculpted side sills, a deeper rear bumper, 20inch alloys and a race car-style rear diffuser complete the exterior updates.

Inside there’s sports seats covered in stitched carbon leather and a sprinkling of R-S badges, but the Sporbrake’s impressive interior space remains. That means 60:40 split folding rear seats and a boot that extends to 1,675-litres

with the seats down.

Although the XFR-S Sportbrake uses the same basic chassis as the XFRS Saloon, the rear suspension has been tuned specifically to cope with the extra weight. Thanks to stiffer anti-roll bars, firmer springs and dampers and a new front suspension knuckle, overall ride stiffness is up by 30 per cent compared to the standard car. Wider tyres, bigger brakes and an electronic differential should ensure it goes, stops and turns just as well as the Saloon.

It won’t be quiet either – the central silencer in the exhaust has removed

and replaced with an ‘X-piece’ for a booming exhaust note and crackles on the overrun.

Jaguar has also made changes to the standard XF range - introducing a RSport model. It gets the looks of a performance model, with a chunky bodykit, but is only available with the 161bhp 2.2-litre diesel engine returning 57.7mpg and 129g/km. Order books for the new XF models open on April 1, with the XFR-S Sportbrake priced at £82,495. Its closest rivals will be the Audi RS6 Avant and Mercedes E63 AMG Estate.

Audi TT previewed by official sketches

At next month’s Geneva Motor Show Audi will pull the wraps from a completely new iteration of the compact sports car that tore up the rulebook and changed the course of design in its class at its 1998 launch. For the third generation of the iconic TT, the designers have reinterpreted a host of ideas from that first, gamechanging template.

The front end of the new Audi TT has dominant horizontals. The Singleframe grille is broad and flat. Two contours form a V-pattern over the bonnet. The position of the four rings is also new - they now sit centrally on the hood, echoing the R8.

Struts divide up the large air inlets. The headlights repeat this motif – they are

structured with divider struts acting as reflectors for the daytime running light.

Audi can supply the headlights as an option with LED technology or its pioneering Matrix LED technology, where controllable individual lightemitting diodes generate the main beam.

Many details of the new Coupé’s profile are reminiscent of the first generation’s classic design.

The sill contour forms a powerful light edge and the wide wheel arches constitute distinct geometrical entities. At the front, the wheel arch intersects the bonnet join, which continues over the door as the tornado line and extends all the way to the rear. The flat greenhouse looks like an entity in its

own right. The shape of the C-pillar, with a slight kink, gives the TT a powerful, athletic look and enhances the impression of tension.

At the rear, too, horizontal lines reinforce the wide and focused impression. The struts in the rear lights pick up on the headlights’ motif. They remain permanently on – another Audi innovation.

The third brake light with a flat strip shape links the two units on either side. All engine versions have two large, round exhaust tailpipes in the diffuser.

Like all Audi S models, the TTS features four tailpipes.

Inside, too, the styling is so light it almost seems to float, evoking the clean sports car character of the new Audi TT. The centre console and door trims have

flowing, matching shapes.

Seen from above, the dashboard resembles the wing of an aircraft. The round air vents, a classic TT feature, have a turbine-like look and incorporate the air conditioning controls. This solution – and the elimination of the central MMI monitor, now replaced by the Audi virtual cockpit – paves the way for the dashboard’s remarkably slim architecture.

Sharper lines and a more dramatic interplay between surfaces will be particularly notable features of the third generation of the Audi TT, but they only scratch the surface of a pedigree sports car that has been systematically refined in every department, both inside and out.

Floyd Mayweather says “NO!” Me personally, from a British interest, would have loved for to have fought Khan Mayweather, the greatest fighter on the planet to date.

And like Amir Khan always says he wants to fight the best of the best like any fighter.

I really thought it might happen at one point but reading between the lines never said Mayweather anything to anybody about who he would be fighting and there has been many months of feverish speculations and lots of silly reports that a deal had been done. I don’t know how Amir Khan and his team could say a deal had been met and that they had signed their half of the contract but Team Mayweather had not signed theirs. Please correct me if I’m wrong but in business dealings in general, a deal is done only when both parties have signed contracts on the dotted line. It seems Amir has been lead the pied piper’s merry dance and now finds himself in lounging limbo.

Mayweather said in a statement: “Marcos Maidana's last performance immediately brought him to my attention.

“It has been a very frustrating period as I’d been due to fight in December against Devon Alexander, however, I was strongly advised to not take this fight as I would be facing Floyd this May – and therefore signed my side of the contract on this belief.

“Floyd was keen to engage with the fans and so decided to let them choose who he should fight in his next bout. I clearly won his official poll, by a significant margin, but for unknown reasons he decided to ignore the fans vote and failed to keep his word.

Pound for pound the world’s best boxer Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather jnr announced to the world on his 37th birthday via Twitter that he will be fighting Marcos Maidana in a Welterweight title fight even though he had asked the public and the fans to decide who he should fight next, Maidana or Khan. Mayweather and his team are well known for toying with the boxing media and fans alike, playing hype, mind games and spinning webs of confusion, deflection and illusion with regards to what he is doing next.

Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, said: “Mayweather has more than 11 million followers on various social media outlets and the poll was just one of the vehicles used. Bottom line, we took a look at everything that was coming through on the various outlets and we're fighting the very best guy out there.”
