About Us The Asian Studies Center at Michigan State University, named a National Undergraduate Resource Center (Title VI NRC) since 2000 by the U.S. Department of Education, directs one of the largest, most diverse programs of education about Asia in the Midwest. Unlike other programs, the Center is distinguished by its approach to East, South, Central, North, West, and Southeast Asia in the design of its curriculum, focus on faculty research, and scope of outreach activities.

Mr. Premji, global tech company leader and educational philanthropist, will be meeting and speaking with faculty and students. At MSU's spring commencement, Mr. Premji will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the university. Azim Premji serves as chairman of Wipro Ltd., a $8 billion revenue, information technology, and research and development company with a presence in 60 countries, and he has made a significant impact on improving education throughout India through the Azim Premji Foundation. In 2001, Premji established the Azim Premji Foundation, with a vision of building a better society by enhancing quality and equity in India’s public school system. The foundation works in seven states of India, which have more than 300,000 schools. In 2011, the foundation established Azim Premji University.

Student Spotlight Marianne Caddy

Throughout the years, Premji has received numerous honors and accolades. Business Week listed him among the top 30 entrepreneurs in world history. Time listed him among the world’s 100 most influential people in April 2004 and again in April 2011, citing his contribution to improving the public education system in India. Premji is the first Indian recipient of the Faraday Medal. The Republic of France bestowed upon him the “Legion of Honor,” and in January 2011 he received Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award in India. The MSU College of Education has been closely involved in the development of Azim Premji University, which opened three years ago and focuses on programs in education and development. In addition, faculty members Punya Mishra, Sonya Gunnings-Moton & Leigh Graves Wolf recently received a $2.8 million grant from Wipro to develop a teacher leader program in urban areas focused on math and science.

By pursuing the Specialization, she has enrolled in many courses devoted to Asian Studies relating to India in Hinduism, Buddhism, alternative medicine, and many other topics related to Asia. She has also taken Hindi for three semesters. In her coursework, Marianne is currently researching caregiver stress and telehealth. Marianne's passion for Indian culture compelled her to travel to India in the summer of 2014 for a study abroad program. While in Northern India, she researched medical accessibility in mountain towns and spiritual

Fusuo Zhang from China Agricultural University will lecture. Fusuo Zhang's research focuses on plant nutrition management. Since 1998, he has paid special attention to developing integrated nutrient management concepts and techniques to realize high-yield and high-efficiency crop production systems for important Chinese crops through improving soil fertility, nutrient use efficiency, and crop yield and quality, as well as reducing environmental pollution. He has established a vast network that includes more than 300 soil, plant nutrition and agronomy professionals in China, as well as 58 experimental sites/stations in 20 provinces. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals, including Science, Nature, and PNAS. Dr. Zhang has served as vice president of the Soil Science Society of China, vice president of the Plant Nutrition and Fertilizer Science Society of China, and chairman of the Soil Testing and Fertilization Expert

After graduation, Marianne plans to become a social worker in a hospital or medical setting, and "work daily to combat minority health disparities," she says. Marianne believes that "health is a natural right, and that no one should be excluded from services (or comfort in these services) based on their ethnicity or any other factor." Her plans include working closely with nonprofit organizations.

This lecture is free and open to the public.

Recently named the University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum (UURAF) winner in the Social Work category, Marianne also received the 2014 Shao Chang Lee Paper Scholarship from the Asian Studies Center for her paper, "The Spirituality of Hinduism,Environmental Beliefs, and Resulting Human Behaviors".

Dissertation Research in Chinese Studies

Liberty in North Korea Summit in California

The China Times Cultural Foundation is offering scholarships for doctoral candidates in the humanities or social sciences with an approved dissertation prospectus. Enrollment in a university in the United States or Canada is required. The top applicant will receive $10,000 and the rest will receive $6,000. Applicants must send a completed application form, curriculum vitae, official transcript of graduate course work, reprints of publications (if any), and a project description in English and Chinese. The Summit is a two-day student event hosted by Liberty in North Korea (LINK) to unite, educate, and activate our generation to solve one of the greatest challenges facing humanity today with regards to North Korean refugees and the North Korean regime. LINK is bringing North Korean and international millennials together to share the knowledge and ideas needed to create solutions for the future. This is an opportunity for student leaders around the globe to learn and work with our North Korean peers to accelerate changing perceptions in North Korea. Click here to register. Employees Anne Lusty, a Creative Advertising major and the student graphic designer at the Asian Studies Center, will be graduating on Friday, May 2, 2014. Anne is responsible for the design of the Center's flyers, logos, brochures, and other elements. She works well as part of our team over the past year and will be greatly missed when she enters the workforce this summer! Alexis Pierce, a junior International Relations and Comparative Cultures and Politics double major and another student employee at the Asian Studies Center, was nominated for the MSU Student Employee of the Year. She also recently received the 2014 National Security Education Program (NSEP) Boren Scholarship for her study abroad in South Korea beginning this fall for the academic year. She will continue working at the Asian Studies Center during the summer. Dillon Jaghory, a sophomore majoring in Media & Information and Chinese, also works in the Center as a student employee. Without Dillon the Center would not be as efficient and dynamic. We appreciate his hard work and diligence.
