Dr. Rasmussen, who received her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1990, researches a range of organismal-level projects, including systematics at and near the species level of birds of Asia emphasizing morphological and vocal characters. She recently published in 2012 the second, revised edition of "Birds of South Asia: the Ripley Guide," copublished by Lynx Edicions, the Smithsonian Institution, and Michigan State University. Also in 2012, she was the lead author on a paper that included the naming of two new species of owl from the Philippines to science. Describing her relationship with the Center, Dr. Rasmussen notes that "funding from the Asian Studies Center helped make my travel to the Philippines possible, and I've received a lot of advice and encouragement on various research projects and possibilities from the Center." Additionally, she helps the Asian Studies Center each October at CraneFest. She will be co-leading the "Wild Borneo" study abroad program with Dr. Siddharth Chandra in Summer 2014. Dr. Rasmussen currently works on several projects using an integrative approach (morphology, vocalizations, and DNA) to study the systematics of Asian birds, mostly in Indonesia and the Philippines, but also China, India, and other countries. Interestingly, some of these projects include new species yet to be scientifically described!
