About Us The Asian Studies Center at Michigan State University, named a National Undergraduate Resource Center (Title VI NRC) since 2000 by the U.S. Department of Education, directs one of the largest, most diverse programs of education about Asia in the Midwest. Unlike other programs, the Center is distinguished by its approach to East, South, Central, North, West, and Southeast Asia in the design of its curriculum, focus on faculty research, and scope of outreach activities. Presently, the Center’s nearly 200 affiliated faculty members represent

The Asian Studies Center is now entrusted with the management of the Dr. Delia Koo Endowment. We are now calling for Center-affiliated faculty to submit applications for research and conference funding. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. The goals of the Koo Endowment are: 1. To facilitate the incorporation of international and global studies, especially of Asia, in teaching, research, and outreach at Michigan State University. 2. To develop the capability of Michigan State University faculty members to conduct activities related to (1.) above. 3. To enhance the standing of the colleges, departments, and the Asian Studies Center and affiliated units at Michigan State University in the area of Asian Studies. It is envisioned that faculty research funding will be capped at $5,000 per award, and conference travel funding at $1,000 per award. It is also expected that 10-

Student Spotlight Adam Burns

Majors: International Relations; Comparative Cultures and Politics; Chinese Specializations: Asian Studies; International Development Year: Senior Hometown: Freeland, MI As a specialization student, Adam focuses his studies around Asia, specifically around China. For example, he has substituted IAH courses for Chinese history courses, he focused his International Development Specialization around development issues in South and Southeast Asia, and he has made his study abroad program in China and his language study in Chinese. Adam currently works in the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) as an intern and while not in class or at work, he is a member of MSU Model United Nations as an Assistant Chair for the National Security Task Force. Adam aspires to continue to advance Sino-U.S. Relations, particularly in areas of intercultural competency and understanding. He wants to "work in a capacity that allows for... [him] to apply... [his] knowledge of Asian Studies and Chinese language in a meaningful and impactful way."

Study Abroad Summer 2014: Political-economic and Sociocultural Change in Modern Turkey This program is designed for a wide range of undergraduate students with interest in politics, society, culture, international relations, gender politics, ethnicity, political economy, and political thought in Turkey. Key themes include political, economic and socio-cultural changes in modern Turkey, the challenge of designing policies to address the region’s social and environmental problems, and Turkey’s role as a nation on the border between Europe and Asia. The program is based in two of Eurasia’s most fascinating cities, Istanbul and Ankara, and allows students in the humanities and social sciences the flexibility to pursue their own research and academic interests while providing a comprehensive overview of contemporary Turkey’s politics and culture. Asian forest and marine environments on and around the magical island of Borneo. Borneo is among the world’s largest islands and is extraordinarily rich in charismatic endemic species, and a host of other stunning natural attractions such as Mt. Kinabalu, the highest peak in S.E. Asia; among the largest bat caves in the world; and the megadiverse coral reefs of the Indian Ocean, home of the whale shark. Highlights from the Korean Folk Painting Demonstration

Announcement

On February 7, 2014, Korean artists Jung-Ye Nam and Chang Soo Song brought the art of Minhwa to MSU through a hands-on workshop. Around 35 participants painted a Korean motif using traditional materials. Minhwa is a form native to Korea that uses mythological and natural symbols from Korean folk practices to decorate rooms and accessories. The art form is characterized by a simple and naive style that was common in homes in traditional Korean society.

Great Lakes Shiga High School Science Exchange Program Summer 2014 Twenty current high school tenth and eleventh graders from the Great Lakes area and Japan’s Shiga Prefecture will join together for a rigorous water science program and cultural exchange featuring ten days in the Great Lakes area followed by ten days in the Lake Biwa/Shiga Prefecture area. The program includes a MSU Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) application process, pre-departure activities including an overnight group event on the campus of MSU, and post-exchange extension opportunities. Total student costs: $500.00 toward airfare to Japan; $100.00 application fee if student advances to Phase II of the selection process. Important Dates: January 6-March 1, 2014: Application window March 15/16, 2014: Phase II MSU overnight event July 31-August 9, 2014: Great Lakes Study Tour August 18-29, 2014: Lake Biwa/Shiga Study Tour Students must commit to attend all phases of this project for acceptance into the program. This program is generously funded by the United States Japan Foundation and MSU’s Asian Studies Center. Highlights from the Chinese New Year Celebration at Meridian Mall The second annual Greater Lansing Area Chinese New Year Celebration was held at the Meridian Mall on Saturday, February 1st. Over a thousand attendees enjoyed a Lion Dance and Parade through the mall, along with student and professional performances in the areas of music, singing, dancing, taichi, fashion, and pageantry. Participatory cultural activities included carnival games, art activities, brush painting, calligraphy, and more.

The film examines the plight of a group of widows forced into poverty at a temple in the holy city of Varanasi. It focuses on a relationship between one of the widows, who wants to escape the social restrictions imposed on widows, and a man, who is from the highest caste and a follower of Mahatma Gandhi.

Dr. Brett Esaki is a postdoctoral teaching assistant from Central Michigan University who has a specialty in the arts and spirituality among ethnic minorities.
