I always think a good place to begin your journey is the overflowing draw of random items in the kitchen! You can lay everything out on the work surface and either keep in the draw, throw away or reposition it elsewhere in your house where it belongs. I always get a great sense of achievement from a small task like that and it gives me energy to carry on with other areas of my home.

As William Morris once said ‘only keep items in your home that are either useful or beautiful’, I think most things can fall into these categories but when doing it yourself it can be so hard to take away the sentimental factor. At Brogenna we offer a non-judgemental helping hand for any projects you may want to undertake in your home or business, whether it be design or decluttering. The Amalfi Coast - Home of Limoncello

Amalfi, in my opinion, is the jewel in the crown.

Between the 9th and 11th centuries it was the centre of a powerful, maritime republic. The ArabNorman Sant’Andrea Cathedral, from that era, with its striped Byzantine façade, dominates the heart of the town. The tranquil gardens within the Cloister del Paradiso is the perfect, shady place to escape from the midday sun. Amalfi is also famous for handmade paper as well as lemons.

The Museo della Carta (Museum of Paper), located in a 13th century mill, still has original working paper presses.

If you have never tasted Limoncello you’re in for a treat. It is a digestif, served after dinner, traditionally made from the zest of lemons and is served ice cold, straight from the fridge.

The Amalfi Coast is famous for its stunning scenery and for its lemons, you will see them growing everywhere!

The nearest airport to the Amalfi Coast is Naples, from which point you could either hire a car or take a shuttle bus or a train to Sorrento, (the shuttle bus is easiest). I wouldn’t really recommend driving as the winding coast road is not for the faint hearted, with its hairpin turns and sheer cliff edges! Sorrento is a lovely coastal town to use as a base. From its harbour you look out across the Bay of Naples and the beautiful islands of Capri and Ischia. The historic centre is a warren of narrow, alleyways lined with boutique shops leading onto the Piazza Tasso. From Sorrento you can take the train to the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, (approx. half an hour). The archaeological site is well worth a visit. Buried under metres of volcanic ash after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD the city was basically frozen in time. After extensive excavation you can now explore the streets and squares of ancient Pompeii, visiting temples, baths, public buildings, shops and houses which allow us an amazing insight into everyday life as it was then.

Three other towns on the Amalfi Coast that you may have heard of are also well worth visiting and they are all very different and beautiful. You will have seen pictures of Positano, with its cascade of colourful houses, impossibly clinging to the near vertical hillside as it tumbles onto the pebble beaches. The streets are narrow and very steep with cafes and boutique shops abound. It’s very small but unmissable.

Ravello is approx. 25 mins further east along the coast from Amalfi but at 365 meters above sea level the views from the cliff edge town are far reaching and spectacular. There are two extraordinary villas in Ravello. The Villa Rufolo, overlooking the Piazza Vescovado, is at the historic and cultural centre of Ravello. Built by a wealthy merchant family in the 13th century it was one of the largest and most expensive villas on the Amalfi Coast in its prime. One of the most iconic views of the Amalfi Coast is taken from Villa Rufolo’s exceptional gardens. The Villa Rufolo is host to the Ravello Music Festival and other outdoor summertime concerts. The second famous villa is the elegant, medieval Villa Cimbrone, today a prestigious, luxury 5 star hotel.

These are just a few of the highlights along the Amalfi Coast, a truly stunning destination.

Decluttering and meal prep Food for Thought, By Louise, Westbourne This month, as spring finally feels like its on its way, it’s a great time for spring cleaning and preparing for the months ahead. Who else has started having a really good spring clean of your wardrobe, kitchen or life?

Meal prep is also important, if you can plan some snacks, prepare breakfasts and batch cook meals with leftovers going into the freezer or used for the next day’s lunch it could revolutionise your health, eating habits, give you more time, save you money and help the environment by cutting down waste. What’s not to love?

So here’s my quick top tips for spring cleaning your kitchen and to start meal prepping.

Take all food items out of your cupboards / pantry and check use by dates.

Do an inventory of what you have to use for meal prep.

Use existing kilner jars or empty jam jars to put your loose goods in like grains, pasta, nuts and dried fruit. Label them with tags and string or sticky labels. This means you can easily see what you have and keeps them tidy and fresh.

Clean the cupboards inside whilst all the food is out of them.

Do the same for your fridge, taking out any half-used sauces and condiments stuck at the back that you aren’t going to use again and make an inventory.

Check what is in your freezer and also do an inventory and have a good clean and even defrost it if needs be!

Do a little at a time, no need to get overwhelmed, but it’s really satisfying once everything is in order.

Get your tupperware cupboard organised, so it doesn’t jump out at you every time you open the cupboard! Plus you will then be ready for the meal prep section!

Your freezer is your best friend, fill it with homemade soups, snacks and leftovers.

A great start is to make more of each dinner for lunch the next day.

Schedule a couple of hours a week to batch cook things like roasted vegetables, quinoa or rice, meals you can freeze, make energy balls or flapjacks etc. Taking a couple of hours in one go will not only save you time and money in the long run but if you’re making healthier treats, snacks and lunches you won’t be tempted to pick up food on the go and make unhealthy choices.

So to conclude, in essence, if you invest a little time in sorting your cupboards, ingredients, batch cooking and preparing meals in advance you’ll save time in the long run. You’ll reduce the waste, save money, in theory eat better as you’ll know what is in your food and won’t be making bad choices when out and hungry if you have a healthy snack with you or lunch ready for when you get back. Get prepping and organised, you won’t regret it!

Four questions for your contractor The decision to use a contractor for any kind of project can be a daunting one. With shows like Rogue Traders highlighting the risks of using dodgy companies, we thought we'd share five questions to ask a potential contractor.

1. Are you insured?

Insurance is a business essential and anyone carrying out works should have public liability insurance at the very least.

2. Do you have a waste carriers license?

Waste is fairly controversial. There has been a huge increase in 'professional' fly-tipping, where seemingly legitimate businesses take removed waste and dump it on public or private land. Ask to see a copy of their waste carriers license; a good contractor, like Castlemain Groundworks, always has proof available.

3. Is your work guaranteed?

A new driveway, patio or concrete base is a fairly hefty purchase, and as a consumer, you want to know that it carries assurance from the contractor.

Ask how long they will guarantee their work, and what the process is to have issues looked into should they arise.

4. Do you have a team?

There are pros and cons to using a team vs a one-man band. The main ones are timeliness

- a team can complete your project quickly and efficiently simply because it's all hands on deck. Poole Osprey Project In last month’s edition we celebrated the success of the Poole Harbour Osprey Translocation Project’s first year in 2017. This month we hear about the downs and ups of 2018 and 2019...

The project’s second year was a difficult one for the Osprey team.

The extreme heat of summer 2018 caused complex health issues for several of the chicks, which meant a few never began their migration south.

Focused on making sure we learnt from our experiences that summer, the team went about reviewing every element of husbandry phase of the project, changing everything they suspected could have played a part in the health issues.

In 2019, their project modifications were put to the test. Chicks were collected from Scotland a week later than usual, and only birds above a minimum size were chosen. Upon arrival in Dorset they were taken to a new, more secluded release site, where for eight weeks they were fed only the freshest fish, sourced each day from a local trout farm. On the hottest days the birds were sprayed with water, helping with cooling and hydration, and the release pens were redesigned to increase airflow and reduce temperatures inside.

And the results spoke for themselves. Last year all eleven chicks fledged in excellent condition after three weeks in the pens, and quickly meeting our resident adult birds, CJ7 and their predecessor LS7, who had an exciting summer of their own (more on this next month). One chick was predated by a fox just days before the others all migrated in September, but a post-mortem indicated he’d been in prime condition, which bodes well for the rest. And, we know that one named 019 definitely made it all the way to The Gambia, as she was photographed there on Christmas Eve 2019!!

Anyone who’s worked with wild animals will tell you that the lows are an unfortunate but inevitable part of the job, but they also make highs like these all the more special. We can’t wait for spring 2020 to arrive to see what next exciting chapter unfolds.

Dorset Police would like to remind you to lock your vehicle at all times and remove any valuables. Do not leave spare keys within the vehicle as this makes it an easy target for the opportunist thief.

We generally take steps to ensure our homes and personal property are secure, but many of us are less vigilant when it comes to our vehicles.

Thought sailing too expensive?

Sailing is considered by many to be an expensive pastime, but it needn’t be that way.

Good second-hand boats are easy to come by, and by joining a ‘self-help’ club like Lilliput you can gain access to all the sailing facilities you require while enjoying the benefits of membership of a friendly club at a much lower cost than you might anticipate.

Lilliput Sailing Club keeps down the costs of membership by having only one (parttime) employee. There are no unnecessary overheads and all members contribute a little time and effort to running the Club. This results in very modest fees; for example, the subscription rate for full membership is just £107 per annum. (There is a one-off joining fee of £214.)

We cater for both sailing dinghies and small sailing cruisers. It costs just £60 to keep most sailing dinghies here for the summer season (approx. April 1st to October 31st). The Club has direct access to the safe waters of the Salterns Lagoon, (see photograph) – a sheltered location for new dinghy sailors to learn the basics before heading out into the harbour. We run informal ‘lagoon races’ to help less experienced dinghy sailors gain confidence and have fun competing.

Members with small cruisers (up to 30ft overall length) have a choice of moorings. Those shown in the lagoon photograph are for shallower draft vessels, while the moorings for the deeper draft boats are in the harbour, just outside the lagoon.

For a typical 23ft cruiser, a seasonal mooring (including Harbour Dues and Crown Estates charges for 2020) would cost £404 for a harbour mooring, or £329 in the lagoon.

Most sailing dinghies are taken home by their owners at the end the season, leaving room for the cruisers to be craned ashore for winter storage. The cost for hoisting out, storing and hoisting back in a 23ft cruiser is currently £188.

So, the total costs related to a seasonal lagoon mooring, together with winter storage, for a 23ft sailing cruiser would be £517.

programme of sailing activities, such as racing, rallies and an annual Regatta, as well as a packed schedule of social events throughout the winter months. Members enjoy unlimited access to our clubhouse, which includes a lounge and bar with stunning views across the harbour to Brownsea, together with changing and showering facilities and a training room.

Regarding the cost of buying the boat itself; good, solid, second-hand GRP sailing boats have dropped in price considerably in recent years, and excellent sea-going boats can now be bought for the price of a small used car. The local agents and websites such as ApolloDuck (https://yachts. apolloduck.co.uk/) have lots of examples, and they are all priced ready to be negotiated down.

I hope these words and figures have helped dispel the myth that sailing is an elitist pastime, available only to the super-rich! We aim to promote and encourage amateur sailing for those with modest means. I am lucky to work closely with sports massage and deep tissue therapists to help our patients with aches and pains, recover from injury, optimise performance, improve postural dysfunctions and help mental wellbeing. This month I have teamed up with our massage therapists at Cadbury Physiotherapy to find out how massage treatment might be of benefit to you.

Sports massage A sports massage tends to be more areaspecific, focusing on soft tissue dysfunctions that may have occurred due to high training volume, trauma, muscle imbalance or poor biomechanics.

The objective with sports massage is either to aid the recovery from injury, the prevention of injury, or to assist performance through helping boost power production and the range of motion.

What are the main benefits of massage therapy?

The two types of massage use similar techniques but sports massage therapists tend to incorporate more passive stretching techniques and may address your posture if indicated.

These benefits are largely the result of an increase in local blood circulation which helps to flush out chemical irritants and waste products which have stored up within the muscle. Commercial Road, Parkstone, BH14 0JW Dear Friends, I’m pretty sure that when you hear the word “Lent”, the words “giving up” also come to mind! “Giving up” or “going without” seem to be the unofficial hallmark for these weeks before Easter. Unlike Advent with its joyful anticipation of birth and hope, Lent is often characterised as a time of self-denial and deprivation - with the tantalising glimpse of Easter just over the horizon as motivation to complete the course.

“Taking on” “Adding Value”, are buzz words of our time. Often, they refer to the action of making a product better by the way it is produced or presented. While the tradition for Lent has been about “giving up” because it echoes Jesus’ fasting and denial of himself; I think the practice of “taking on” an activity for Lent brings a much more positive (and arguably more valuable) outcome to this time of devotional preparation.

Whatever you choose to “give up” or “take on” this Lent, I encourage you to use this time to “add value” to your relationship with God, your practical concern for others and to the wider community. I believe that for each of us, Jesus “added value” to our relationship with God, as he faced the tempter, entered Jerusalem, died on the cross and was raised on the third day.

May his presence and strength be with you in these days of Lent.

Penn Hill BCP councillor update

The Conservative party’s attempts to oppose the first BCP Council budget submission on 18 February 2020 were thwarted by an alliance of Liberal Democrats, Labour, Green and Independent Councillors who are led by an environmental extremist group of individuals primarily interested in an agenda that ignores the needs of our community.

The Daily Echo reported their plans include spending between £20-£29 million on refurbishing Bournemouth Town Hall as the single core hub for BCP and selling the civic office buildings in Poole and Christchurch. These plans are wrong on so many levels. It is an obscene amount of money to spend on facilities for any Council. It is doubtful that the project will stay within its budget.

The former civic offices of Christchurch and Poole will become flats and increase the traffic congestion of the town centers (and there will be no parking provided). Finally, those funds could be better spent addressing real needs of the town like homelessness, road infrastructure and social services.

Additionally, the BCP Council is raising Council tax by 4% on Poole and Bournemouth to help fund their folly. The amalgamation of three Councils into a unitary authority was sold to the public on the basis that it would save money. In the first budget presented to the BCP Council that is clearly not the case. Penn Hill Ward Councillors, Cllr. Tony O’Neill and Cllr. Bryan Dion voted against the budget and will continue to fight to hold BCP Council leadership accountable for their frivolous and wasteful spending.

Marginalizing Poole to “satellite drop-in service” at the cost of selling off the Poole and Christchurch offices for a £7-£9 million pound gain is not value for money. The leadership of the BCP is not using judicious management of ratepayer’s monies to effectively deliver basic services. Instead they are creating a monument to bureaucratic waste, political ego with total disregard for the best interest of the needs of Poole.

Everyone is welcome at the race for life Bournemouth and Poole THIS year, everyone is invited to Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in Bournemouth and Pretty Muddy in Poole.

The charity’s much-loved events are returning to the town but are no longer restricted to female participants.

This means everybody can be part of the empowering Race for Life movement – and show support for the 34,800 people diagnosed with cancer every year in the South West.

The Race for Life and Pretty Muddy events take place at Baiter Park in Poole on Sunday June 21 and Race for Life 5km & 10km takes place on The Seafront in Bournemouth on Sunday, June 14 and are open to people of all ages and abilities.

Georgina Horne, Cancer Research UK’s Event Manager for Dorset, said: “This year, our Race for Life events are open to everyone.

“We’re sending a heart-felt message to anybody who’s thought about signing up in the past but for one reason or another hasn’t got round to it.

This is your year – please seize the opportunity to register and become part of the Race for Life community.

At the Nursery, we grow and recommend a range of tough coastal shrubs, perfect for growing in gardens along the south coast, they can be planted as a shelter belt or incorporated throughout borders to provide structure and shelter. All of our hardy shelter plants are evergreen and possess attractive foliage, but the Daisy-Bushes from the Olearia genus, also give a dazzling flowering display with masses of daisy clusters during summer.

If you would like to come and join us feel free to pop in to the Church Hall on the third Thursday of the month between 2pm and 4pm and do as much or as little as you like.

We ask for a voluntary donation of £2 a meeting. Come and be social with tea, coffee and chat. We have a monthly schedule of events planned from having cream teas, film afternoons, summer social meal, beach walks, one or two speakers invited to enlighten us and more.

Event extravaganza in charity’s 55th year!

‘Better Balance Classes’

2020 marks the 55th year of Margaret Green Animal Rescue caring for rescue animals and in celebration of this a brand new two day event will take place on 8th and 9th August.

Are you worried about falling or have you fallen recently? Are you over 55? Then come along and join our Better Balance exercise classes at the Canford Cliffs Village Hall, 17 Ravine Road Poole BH13 7HT These gentle exercise classes are designed to improve balance, muscle strength and confidence and are based on the Otago Exercise Programme, developed in New Zealand to reduce the likelihood and severity of falls in older people. The sessions will be chair based at first and as confidence grows more standing will be introduced and encouraged using a chair as support. The atmosphere is friendly, relaxed and sociable.

The Country Dog Show will combine the best of the charity’s two major events to form what will be the ‘go to event’ of the Summer!

The Country Dog show takes place at Church Knowle Rehoming and Visitor Centre, Wareham, BH20 5NQ, gates open at 11:00 on each day and there will something for all the family to enjoy, including the four legged members and children too. You can expect live music, local gin, fine cheeses, hay bales, fun dog show, ice cream, kids’ zone and animal education.

Early bird discounted tickets are available now for just £4 Adult per day / £2 Child per day from both Dorset rescue centres and charity shops in Kinson, Weymouth, Wimborne and Winton.

Gazundering – What is it and how to avoid it A recent survey found over 40 per cent of all sellers are concerned about gazundering, a practice which tends to increase in a flat or falling property market. Here we explain what it is and why it’s important to choose the right solicitor to ensure your property is sold at the agreed price.

What is gazundering?

Gazundering is when a buyer lowers their offer price just before the exchange of contracts. As the seller, you are likely to be fully committed to the transaction and will have already incurred costs, particularly if you also have a linked purchase. Having taken your property off the market, if you lose this buyer, you may feel you will be back to square one.

Why does it happen?

Sometimes a buyer may have a good reason for making a last-minute price reduction. For example, they may have just received a survey that reveals a serious

defect. Often though, they may simply be taking advantage of the situation, relying on you not wanting the sale to fall through. Their actions may be unscrupulous, but, unfortunately, they are completely legal, although the government is looking into ways to reduce this happening.

Choose the right solicitor Find a solicitor who is an experienced conveyancing professional, who will give you close personal attention. Proactively managing the legal aspects of your transaction will minimise the risk of delay.

Keeping the parties well informed will avoid misunderstandings, which can easily derail a transaction.
