Valentine’s Day is this month and as such, it is the perfect opportunity to show that you care about your vehicle by paying it the attention it deserves. Regularly servicing your car shouldn’t be a chore but rather an important part of fostering a relationship with your vehicle that is cost-effective, smooth and gives back to you in the long term.

Keep an eye on your tyres Your vehicle’s tyres require regular attention, especially in winter. If tyres aren’t checked regularly, they can quickly become deflated due to the constant friction with the road.

This can lead to the uneven wearing of the tread. Therefore, we recommend checking them at least once every two weeks.

Don’t suffer in silence with pain…

Often aches and pains tend to kick in a bit more at this time of year and part of my role as a Physiotherapist and Pilates instructor is to help others with their pain. Sometimes pain can last a bit longer than the odd niggle here and there and that is what we term ‘chronic pain’ which is pain that lasts for longer than 12 weeks.

It is important to get the appropriate management of chronic pain. When you have pain for a prolonged period of time you can get central changes within the nervous system which can heighten the pain sensations that you get and sometimes only small triggers can irritate the pain more than you would expect. Being in pain can affect our mood, our sleep pattern, our mobility, our role within a family and ability to work.

Acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous system causing the release of neurochemicals which can promote physical and emotional wellbeing.

Traditional acupuncture takes a holistic approach to health and regards pain as a sign that the body is out of balance. The skill of the acupuncturist lies in identifying the cause of the underlying imbalance and then selecting the most effective treatment including needling, moxibustion, electro-acupuncture, cupping and gua sha.

These treatment techniques can improve muscle stiffness and joint mobility by increasing blood flow to the area which helps with healing and flushing away of toxins.

Poole Osprey Project How do you translocate an osprey? Or eight…?

Each year, in early July, the team at the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation visit osprey nests across northern Scotland as part of their scientific monitoring scheme.

Chicks are temporarily removed Young Osprey© Simon Kidner from a nest, and a uniquely identifiable ring is fitted to each leg before they are returned with minimal disturbance.

However, in July 2017, during their annual nest inspections, the team walked away with more than they’d normally bargain for. Whilst ensuring to always leave behind at least one chick in the parents’ care, they collected (under licence) a total of eight seven-week old osprey chicks, who were to become the pioneers of a brand new population on the south coast. This precious cargo was transported the 700km to Dorset overnight, arriving around midday on Tuesday 11th July, where they were placed under the care of the Birds of Poole Harbour team. These young birds had already been on a long journey, but this was only the beginning of a much more significant one for them and everyone involved…

The chicks were placed in release pens overlooking the scenic shores of Poole Harbour, where they were diligently monitored via CCTV by a team of volunteers and fed three daily meals of fresh fish. After two weeks of learning to fly, each was fitted with a radio tag to allow their movements to be tracked after release. Then, at the crack of dawn one August morning the pens were opened and the chicks were free to explore their expansive new home. The team continued monitoring and feeding for around four weeks, until instincts kicked in and each chick began its solo migration to West Africa. We were lucky enough to hear that at least three had completed this journey successfully, including ‘LS7’, who’s since become the star of the whole project, and whom we’ll hear more about in later columns!

Dorset Wildlife Trust Dorset: A good spot for wildlife As 2020 unfolds, Dorset Wildlife Trust is asking for help from the residents of Dorset, to keep track of wildlife on their doorsteps. The Species of the Month species list for 2020 is shaping up to be a really interesting one, with mammals, plants, birds and insects to spot in your garden, or local green spaces (including nature reserves!). All you need to do to help is let us know when you see something.

For February, we’re asking for sightings of the lesser celandine flower – a true sign that spring is on its way. This flower is in the buttercup family and is one of the first spring woodland flowers to appear. It’s also a really important early source of nectar for emerging pollinators, such as queen bumblebees, who will need an energy-boost!

After flowering in May, the plant enters a sixmonth dormancy. Lesser celandine flowers close at night and this is believed to reduce the rate of grazing by deer and slugs. They also close when it rains for protection – which is why they have been believed to predict the weather! They can be found along streams, in hedgerows and in gardens.

Looking ahead to March, as spring starts to pop up everywhere, we’re looking for sightings of the blackcap. With one of the most melodic bird songs, the blackcap is very distinctive, and are nicknamed the

‘mock nightingale’ due to its varied song.

Not surprisingly, the males have a black cap, and the females have a brown cap.

They have a rich, flute-like song and can often be heard calling from dense scrub in early summer. They used to be considered a summer visitor, but they are fast becoming known as a resident bird, spending winter in the UK more and more. Some ‘stop over’ in the UK, rather than migrating all the way to the Mediterranean, and possible reasons for this include milder winters and supplementary garden feeding in the UK. Although a woodland bird, blackcaps are frequently seen in gardens and parks, or anywhere with good shrub cover.

We hope you’ll enjoy spotting new wildlife in 2020 – letting us know what you see is useful information for conservationists in Dorset who can identify trends in populations and help create more informed management plans for wild spaces where you live.

Embracing Positive Ageing Exploring Why Yoga for 2020 and beyond I hope your New Decade and Year has started well. Last month we explored mindfulness and practising yoga has certainly made me more mindful. I am fascinated with how the body influences the mind in a positive way somatopsychic wellbeing and how by being more physically active we can build our mental health.

Let’s briefly explore the philosophy and foundations of yoga and some of the many benefits.

‘Yoga is the fountain of youth. You’re only as young as your spine is flexible’ – Bob Harper Yoga comes from a verbal root yuj, which means to yoke or to join. In simple terms we practice physical postures called asanas and breathing techniques know as pranayamas. Within a regular yoga practice meditation and relaxation are also key parts. For me sitting with my breath is when I am mindful and aware. The philosophy of yoga is what can help with our purpose and meaning contributing to our own independence and wellbeing.

The yoga sutras composed by Patanjali are considered the yoga philosophy and indeed for me the heart of yoga the thread. Included in the sutras are the eight limbs of yoga and they have provided me with a way to connect and be with both my internal being and the external world. In

summary they are Yama (self control), Niyama (self regulation), Asana (postures as exercise), Pranayama (breath work), Pratyahara (controlled senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (enlightenment). From my professional background this foundation drew me to studying yoga, its philosophy and connects with the notion that I have explored previously of wellbeing to world being and empowering us to live a meaningful life.

We know that regular exercise and movement can improve our health and wellbeing on so many levels and can support our healing journey. Yoga in particularly has been shown to provide healing, nurturing and deep physical strength to help balance our emotions. It has many advantages improving: balance, strength, stability, flexibility and agility both mentally and physically.

Yoga incorporates practices for mind and body - neurocognitive (mind-body) and neurophysiological (body-mind) pathways to support our ability to self regulate together with improving our resilience. Yoga works across multiple systems in our body at any one time therefore it is increasingly becoming more popular to incorporate as part of our daily routine. This can enable us to connect with ourselves on a deeper level and as result showing compassion for ourselves and each other.

I found in my work as a transformational coach over several decades that I was increasingly wanting to stand up and get clients out of their heads and their thoughts. By integrating mindfulness, yoga and positive psychology into our everyday life has amazing results and opportunities to flourish and be authentic at any age. Certain postures can have very positive connections with certain areas of the body, mental health and well being generally.

Sustainable spring gardening Chestnut Nursery

Spring is only just around the corner as our gardens start to slowly awaken from their winter slumber.

The light levels begin to creep up as do flowering bulbs, bursting through with the first splash of colour of the new year. Here on the nursery it’s full steam ahead as we work everyday to pot and grow a wide array of plants for all to enjoy.

Between the wind and the rain there is plenty to be getting on with around the garden. Prune back deciduous grasses and combe through evergreens to remove dead leaves. Winter flowering shrubs that have gone over, can be pruned, as can hardy evergreens. Now is the time to propagate seed potatoes, summer bulbs, herbs and an array of veg seed, of which we have a great range. To help with preparing beds and soils we recommend digging in some of our locally sourced, peat free cow compost. It’s an excellent and sustainable organic option for all nutrient loving plants such as vegetables and roses.

When you pay us a visit, you may notice all our pot plants have been top dressed with a tidy looking mulch. It’s called Blooming Amazing and is made just down the road in Poundbury as a by-product of sustainable gas production. Spread around beds and borders, it works brilliantly as a weed suppressant, and provides important nutrients for plants. It’s also a food source for Earthworms who come to the surface to have a feast, upon where they take the organic matter back down below, supporting a healthy soil ecosystem.

The Maldives – paradise found!

The Republic of the Maldives is an archipelagic nation located in the Arabian Sea of the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sri Lanka. Unlike anywhere else in the world in terms of its unique geography and topography, the Maldives consists of over 1,100 islands spread across 26 atolls. An atoll is a ringshaped reef, island or chain of islands, formed of coral.

I was lucky enough to visit the Maldives a couple of years ago and I hope that one day, I will have the opportunity to return because it really is a special place and so completely different from anywhere else. It is quite a journey to get there.

British Airways currently have direct flights from Gatwick, through the peak season, November to March. Otherwise, there are a variety of indirect options, the best connections being via the Middle East or via Sri Lanka. It’s a year round destination although the wettest months are from September to December.

Once you have arrived into Male, the capital of the Maldives, you would then travel onward to your resort either by a smaller scheduled aircraft, a seaplane or a speedboat. The journey is all part of the adventure. To travel by seaplane, is a wonderful experience, flying low over the reefs and turquoise lagoons, perhaps spotting a turtle or a pod of dolphins in the crystal, clear water. The colours of the water are so vivid, the beaches so white, the vegetation so green it’s quite magical.

To arrive by speedboat is a different experience again, it almost feels like you’re stepping out of a James Bond film!

So, what is there to do in the Maldives?

Some of the atolls are large enough for a number of resorts but the smaller atolls tend to have just one resort on them.

Many of the activities are water based, the Maldives is famous for snorkelling, diving and fishing. Some of the atolls have their 18 THEASHLEYCROSSLINK

own house reef so you can snorkel from the beach, others would require a boat trip out to the reef. In the South Ari Atoll there is an opportunity to snorkel or dive with Whale Sharks. In other areas there are Manta Rays and several species of Turtles as well of as huge schools of brightly coloured tropical fish and amazing coral walls. There are sunrise or sunset cruises, dolphin spotting cruises, game fishing trips.

An excursion to visit a local community is a great way to learn a little about Maldivian traditions and customs from the residents.

Spa treatments are very popular and fitness classes are often complimentary. Wellness and spa centres go hand in hand with the ethos of the Maldives. Resorts such as Six Senses have created eco-friendly, “Barefoot Luxury” where the emphasis is on using natural and recycled materials for their villas and the food in their restaurants is sourced locally or grown organically in their kitchen gardens.

Many of the resorts in the Maldives are pioneers in sustainable tourism, selfsufficiency and marine conservation. They realise the importance of preserving their fragile coral reefs and the natural beauty of their islands. Spinach and Ricotta Dumplings A tasty and simple meat-free dish that is ideal for a starter or light supper.

Serve with warmed ciabatta bread to mop up the creamy sauce.

Ready in: 1 hour | Serves 4 as a starter, 2 as a main course

Ingredients

225g baby spinach leaves 150g ricotta

2 tbsp freshly chopped parsley 50g grated Parmesan 100g plain flour

2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 2 medium eggs, beaten

Salt and freshly ground black pepper 50g butter

6 tbsp crème fraiche

2 tsp freshly chopped chives

TIP

Salad leaves and cherry tomatoes, to serve

Place the spinach in a large metal colander set over the sink. Pour over boiling water to wilt. Refresh under cold water, drain well then squeeze firmly with your hands to remove any excess moisture.

Roughly chop the spinach and place in a large mixing bowl. Add the ricotta, parsley, Parmesan, flour, garlic and eggs. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and mix to a soft dough.

Using clean damp hands, divide and shape the mixture into about 12 walnut-sized balls. Chill for 30 minutes.

Bring a large pan of lightly salted water to the boil.

Gently add the dumplings. They will drop to the bottom at first then slowly rise to the top. Once they have risen to the top, cook for a further minute. Remove with a slotted spoon and divide between 2 or 4 warmed dishes.

Melt the butter in a small pan. Stir in the crème fraiche and simmer to make a creamy sauce. Pour the sauce around the dumplings. Garnish with chopped chives and serve with salad leaves and cherry tomatoes.

Serve the dumplings with a ready-made tomato and herb pasta sauce instead of the creamy sauce, if liked.

Birthday cakes are made by their very own chef, or bought from Mark Bennets award winning popular delicatessen, which is just across the road. From time to time as a special treat, cake and biscuits, cooked by their own residents, are enjoyed.

Food for Thought

By Louise, Westbourne Following on from last month’s theme of gut health and the fact it’s Valentine’s Day this month, I thought I’d bring you a gut loving healthy chocolate truffle recipe to try.

These will keep in the fridge for about a week or you can keep in the freezer for a couple of months.

Louise’s top tips - add some orange zest to the truffle mixture to make an orange version. Or, roll the truffles in crushed mixed chopped nuts for a crunchy coating. There’s so many options with this yummy basic recipe so cut the page out, keep it and get experimenting. Or simply make as they are, delicious!

Decadent yet healthy chocolate truffles Serves 9 Ingredients: 65g roasted hazelnuts 1 tbsp cacao powder ½ tsp vanilla extract

4. Add remaining ingredients and blend until the mixture sticks together.

Penn Hill BCP councillor update

As we enter into the year 2020 your Penn Hill Ward Councillors Tony O’Neill and Bryan Dion are actively engaged in asking residents about what they expect from the BCP Council.

The highest expectation is honesty and integrity in those elected and employed to provide services for BCP Council. There are those cynics or illinformed individuals who will never be convinced that the BCP operates within rules, guidance and a structure that is designed to be fair, open and transparent. In fact, both Cllr. O’Neill and Cllr Dion’s biggest regret at Penn Hill Ward surgeries is having to occasionally inform residents that their request or need falls outside of what is achievable within the statutes governing the BCP council.

Obviously, expectations from the BCP Council directly correspond with your encounter or need for assistance from the BCP Council. Residents do not have Planning issues on a regular basis, but when you do, it is good to know that Cllr.

O’Neill is a voice on the committee to champion your corner. Similarly, your concerns over licensing are fought by Cllr. Dion.

The BCP Council will meet on 18th February and the new budget priorities will be presented. As members of the opposition party the ability to establish the priorities and ways the BCP Council spends your tax money does not belong to us.

We can raise questions about the tax and spend policies but are not able to directly have an effect on the decisions regarding the BCP budget.

The resourcing needs of Penn Hill for infrastructure, public safety, schools and maintenance of open spaces are specific targets Councillors O’Neill and Dion will seek funding.

Penn Hill must continue to be a vibrant community fueled by the aspirations of private enterprise, the needs of the residents and adequate funding from the BCP Council.

Poole Neighbourhood Policing Team Unfortunately there has been a spate of garage If your garage door is attached to the main house, ensure any connecting doors are made secure. and shed burglaries in recent weeks.

Poole Police would like to remind residents to stay vigilant, call 101 if you see anyone acting suspiciously or 999 if a break in is in progress or life is in danger.

Please follow the below advice to help keep your property safe...

• Don’t leave valuable property in a shed or garage that is either unlocked or so run-down that it’s no obstacle to a thief. If you suspect it might not stand up to attack by a thief then don’t leave valuable items inside, such as your lawnmower or bicycle.

• Fit decent locks to your shed door. The fittings should be bolted through the shed door and reinforced at the back with a steel plate. Any hasp should have concealed screws.

• Padlocks used externally should be no less than 6cm wide and made of hardened steel. A “closed shackle” type is best, as thieves cannot get the likes of a crowbar through the shackle to break it.

The locks themselves should have no less than five pins.

• For sheds that have exterior door hinges replace existing screws with security screws. They are designed so that they cannot be unscrewed once they are screwed in. Or alternatively bolted through as with the door lock.

• Chicken wire or welded metal grilles fixed to the inside of shed windows with wooden or steel batons will deter the burglar.

Don’t be fooled into thinking your garage is any more secure than your shed. Many up-and-over style garage doors are easily overcome, but a padlock with a hasp and staple on the inside is an effective way of improving security.

Consider adding a mortice lock to double garage doors with a rim latch.

Another option to secure an up-and-over garage door is a garage defender lock. This is a heavyduty metal arm, padlocked to a base plate that is bolted into the concrete outside the garage door and prevents the door from being opened.

Alternatively you can fix bolts to the runners of an up-and-over garage door that can be locked from the inside. This is a particularly good idea if you tend to enter your garage from inside your home, and not from the outside.

If your gardening equipment or tools are especially valuable, consider using special security devices inside your shed or garage. Items can be locked down using chains through eyebolts secured to the floor or walls. There are a number of specialist systems available for this purpose.

Consider fitting security cages inside sheds or garages and keep valuable equipment inside them. It’s well worth locking down ladders and tools that could be used to break into your house.

Best not to encourage an opportunistic thief.

Mark all your garden equipment and tools with your postcode and house number/name. Your NPT have limited supply of uv pens ideal for marking property, please ask if you would like one.

Finally, check with your household insurance company that your policy includes cover for items stored in garages, sheds and outbuildings and remember, if you fail to put your equipment away or lock-up, your insurance company probably won’t pay up anyway.

Your garden, as well as your house, has valued possessions that thieves would love to steal. It also has equipment that could help them break into your house.

Most burglars are lazy. They look for easy ways of getting into a house or garden. By taking a few simple precautions you can reduce the risk of being burgled and make your house and garden more secure.

We are scouting for volunteers who want to get behind the scenes of these services and gather feedback to ensure the patient voice is heard, because your voice counts.

We don’t require a dedicated slot every week for you to volunteer your time, just a passion to give back and get involved with our projects as they come up, to make real change happen.

Past projects have included gathering views and offering recommendations in Poole A&E department, carrying out ‘mystery shopper’ assignments in surgeries to ensure correct and consistent information is being given about NHS health checks, and entering local hospitals across Dorset to check the quality of the environment to ensure patient experience is as comfortable as possible.

Raising awareness of the Healthwatch Dorset service is just as vital, and we need volunteers to help spread the word through their social networks, at events with our promotional stand, attending meetings across the county, and for the tech savvy; helping with our social media channels.

Is Life a Drama?

It can be here at times, but this year we are delighted to partnership in and host a very different type of drama.

The Poole Passion, a registered charity, presents a community theatre play following the last days of the life of Jesus. In 2016, ‘Through the eyes of a child’ by Sharon Muiruri Coyne featured on the Easter Day programme of ‘Songs of Praise’.

This year we are presenting a new and exciting play called ‘Footsteps’ by Ann Balaam. The play is currently in production, but we still need more people for several cameo parts, speaking and some non-speaking. We are also supporting the plight of people who sleep rough and some of our members are taking their talents into schools and Day Centres to educate, entertain and socialise. If you would like to come along and take part in the play, we would love to see you. No experience is necessary as you will learn as you go, guided by experienced direction and support of our friendly members. The play runs from 31st March until 4th April 2020. We meet Wednesdays and Fridays at Parkstone United Reformed Church, Commercial Road from 6pm until 8pm. You will just need to commit to the week of the play.

The play traditionally moves, after part one, from PURC around the corner to St. Peter’s for the final scenes; rehearsing there on the third Wednesday of each month. March will soon be here so if you want to be a disciple following in the footsteps of Jesus, or be part of the crowd then either email producer@poolepassion.com or just turn up.

Dorset Neon Run opens for entries Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, is hosting its fourth Dorset Neon Run on Saturday 25th April.

The event takes place at Poole Park and participants are invited to run, jog, walk or even dance their way round the 5-kilometre course.

Entries are open now, with an early bird discounted offer available at £10 per person, with a sponsorship target of £45. One-off donations can also be made in lieu of raising funds.

Volunteer with Schoolreaders to improve literacy in Poole Schoolreaders is a national charity who provides volunteers to give free one-on-one reading practice to children in their primary schools.

As you may know, in the latest government figures published in August 2019, 174,000 children across England were unable to reach the Government’s expected standard of reading at the age of 11. In Dorset, 28% of children (1,090) failed to reach this standard.

In some cases, children do not get sufficient opportunity to practice their reading on a one-toone basis with an adult. Some parents don’t have the time to read with their children at home.
