Thesis 2013 Bridging the gap

Village surrounded by fields

Before the village is urbanized, a zone of transition is developed along the fringes

The urban village merges into the city grid

The thesis intent was to create and develop a zone of transition along the fringe of an urban village in order to merge it with the surrounding urban landscape.

This buffer will provide the infrastructure required for economic, social and physical integration with the developing city. Village Sorkha (in NOIDA) has been chosen as the demonstration site and is in the midst of its transition into the city.

This thesis focuses on two aspects The Macro---A concept masterplan of the zone of transition around the village The Micro---A demonstration of the typology of architecture to be practiced within this zone; this has been done by selecting a small site within the masterplan which houses a Cultural centre and Vocational training institute.

The brief demanded an economically inclusive, high density housing in Dwarka, a satellite town of New Delhi. We explored concepts of inclusivity while learning the key aspects of any good housing; services, light and ventilation, space efficiency.

Settlement Study 2009

Settlement study during my second year design studio. Three groups of 8 students documented three different zones of Kalpa, a hill settlement and published a complete study. Excerpts from the compilation published by S.P.A New Delhi are presented on the following page. I documented a house and the Post Office of the village. We explored indigenous architecture and its deep engagement with local customs and traditional practices.

Seminar “Context in a contest” - Synopsis An architectural work is always placed and hence, judged in a context.

The recent phenomenon of the strangely similar, massive, glitzy monoliths housing the corporates and IT /ITES offices across Pune, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Gurgaon, Chennai, Sydney, Guangzhou, Manila, Hong Kong and Brasilia. Aren’t these easily interchangeable, do any of these locations make a difference?

How does one now define ‘context’ when globalization and urbanization tends to paint all in the same colour, and everything with the same brush. Everyone is everywhere, and seemingly for the same purpose. When the edges get blurred, would ‘blandness’ and ‘lack of character’ be the order? Is this a new ‘convenient’, and a reductive interpretation of contexts?

What will be the evolved view of this new context?

Introduction

A

n architectural work is always placed and hence, judged in a context. For it to be relevant or irrelevant, or to be somewhere in between, would depend on how well the ‘general situation’ has been recognized, understood and interpreted through design.

Until recent times, architecture anywhere could be expected to reflect the local climate, resources and technology available. In other words, architecture was “of- the-place” or what we understand as vernacular or traditional.

By this notion, architecture had acquired its unique temporal values making it sensitive to its environs. This naturally meant that architecture was a region-specific practice. However, that “good” architecture is from the land, by the land and of the land is a notion of the past.

Looking at Fig. 3 and 4 , one can infer that each of these buildings are distinct and exhibit a strong local/ regional flavour.

Another response is the METI School in Bangladesh, it shows how new and refreshing local identity can be achieved by utilising the immediate and the readily available.

Volunteer German architects Anna Heringer and Eike Roswag developed the design concept by considering local cultural, economic and ecological aspects. Elegantly fusing local knowledge, renewable materials and new construction techniques, the project maintains a local identity while embracing modernity in both its form and purpose.

Until recent times, architecture anywhere could be expected to reflect the local climate, resources and technology available. In other words, architecture was “of- the-place” or what we understand as vernacular or traditional.

n architectural work is always placed and hence, judged in a context. For it to be relevant or irrelevant, or to be somewhere in between, would depend on how well the ‘general situation’ has been recognized, understood and interpreted through design.

By this notion, architecture had acquired its unique temporal values making it sensitive to its environs.
