AllSaints’ • Lent 2015

Letter from the Rector Christian life is an adventure in faith. We can often glimpse the quality of adventure in famous saints, such as St. Francis. It’s more difficult to discern faith as an adventure in our own lives.

Sometimes milestones, our decisions, accomplishments, or even defeats, create the direction and bring about discovery in our lives.

Approaching life as an adventure gives us freedom to experiment and to make mistakes. It helps us face the unknown with anticipation, rather than dread. A sense of adventure helps us to respond creatively when challenges arise. It reminds us that God is the One who guides and inspires, and that our role is to follow Jesus Christ as faithfully as we can. Finally, a sense of adventure encourages us to celebrate the small victories along the way.

the stage for our Wednesday evening Lenten series. The March 8 vestry forum and April 17-18 retreat led by Bishop Mary make up important steps in the adventure in faith for the people of All Saints’.

The vestry has declared our transition in leadership to be an adventure in faith. That theme works for me, as I anticipate moving to Spokane, Washington, and beginning a new phase in my ministry. My sermon on the last Sunday of Epiphany (February 15 and found on the ASEC web page) spoke about viewing the world through the lens of the Transfiguration. It sets

My husband, Richard, and I have been happily married for thirty two years. Our daughter, Francesca, is now twenty seven and living in Denver.

I was raised on Long Island, New York. After graduating from Wellesley College I moved to Los Angeles to attend UCLA’s film school. After completing my studies I began working as a motion picture literary agent with one of the biggest firms in Hollywood, International Creative Management, before opening my own agency in 1980. During my 40 years representing writers and directors, I have served as their advocate, councilor and sometimes as their editor. I’m semi-retired now, but I still work with some of my long term clients and enjoy it as much as ever.

I am a cradle Episcopalian. However, during my years of family and career building, I was never an active church goer. A time of deep family despair twelve years ago led me back to church, where I have been ever since.

I have considerable Vestry experience. I served twice at St. Alban’s, the Episcopal chaplaincy for UCLA, and once at

St. Paul’s San Rafael. I was Junior Warden for two years at St. Paul’s and their Senior Warden in 2013. I have served on three Altar Guilds and have been a Lay Eucharistic Minister for eleven years.

Although I am new to All Saints, I believe I can be an asset to the community by bringing a fresh pair of eyes to the challenging and exciting times that lie ahead. I feel my professional experience and organizational skills can be helpful to us in making a smooth transition into our successful future. I believe strongly that this church can come together to forge our future through the power of a loving community.

I have come to treasure All Saints as my spiritual home. I am committed to the spiritual sustenance of the liturgy and dedicated to the loving people who are my new community. It will be a great honor to serve on your Vestry during this pivotal time. I will work energetically to deepen our community, help us discern our path forward and celebrate the many blessings we already enjoy.

Sr. Warden letter to the congregation: I am humbled to have been asked to be the Senior Warden for All Saints’ Parish. It promises to be a busy and challenging year, but with the dedication of all of us, I believe it will be An Adventure in Faith. Your vestry is ambitious and eager to rise to the challenge as we face the task of searching for a new rector while continuing to meet the daily and weekly tasks and activities that go into the running of a parish community.

We have a lot to do. It will be a year of hard work, but if we close our ranks and all pitch in, it will be a rewarding year.

I have a picture in my mind of the early church—the eagerness of those new Christians, persevering in their new faith while harassed and persecuted on all sides by the pagan world. Nothing much has changed. Christians in the Middle East and Africa are being persecuted today, losing homes, livelihoods, freedom and their lives just for being a Christian. The right to practice our faith is protected by law, but our faith is being attacked in a different way: children are forced to choose between sports and Sunday worship, societal indifference and unbelief around us insidiously affects our thinking and makes us wonder if worship matters.

The plethora of Christian congregations around us, ten episcopal parishes in the Monterey-Salinas area alone, make it easy to shop around for a church instead of working to better our own.

We need a new sense of purpose, an awareness of who we are as Episcopalians and as Christians in a modern pagan world. We must remain strong, dedicating ourselves to each other with a willingness to be an active part of our parish congregation.

I would like to challenge each and every one of us to accomplish the following: 1. Pledge something to the upkeep and activities of your parish.

The amount is secondary to your willingness to commit to standing up and being counted.

2. Attend a Sunday Eucharist and/or Evensong each week as you are physically able. And please arrive on time!

3. Volunteer to serve in some way: committee, commission or activity. A list of possibilities is found elsewhere in this magazine. If you are homebound, we need people willing to do the opus Dei, the work of God: pray for the church. Let us know if you want to be part of that ministry and we will send you a copy of the prayer list.

4. Attend the Sunday Forums to be held at 11:45 or the adult education class held at 9:30. And bring your children to Sunday School.

I look forward to this exciting year. We, the vestry, want to hear from you, so please come to the Sunday Forums to stay informed, to learn and to share your wisdom and to contribute your ideas for the life of this church as we embark on an Adventure in Faith together.

AN ADVENTURE IN FAITH: The Rector Transition Process Dear Friends, we are entering a season of change at All Saints’ filled with opportunity to grow and deepen our life with God. As we consider our common life and ministry we invite all to actively participate. While challenging, we anticipate this to be a powerful time of preparing for the call of the Spirit for our future. We are working closely with Bishop Mary and Canon Brian from the diocese to create a process which will include the voices of all those who wish to be heard, maintain the canonical authority of the vestry, and result in a prayerful calling of a Priest in Charge for All Saints’.

Below is the way we came to this decision and how we have discerned we can move forward.

Canon Brian Nordwick, along with vestry members, will answer your questions about the search and transition process. Brian will more fully explain the next steps following the decision made after a meeting with Canon Nordwick and Bishop Mary, in which the vestry learned about two possible approaches to seeking our next rector. The vestry reviewed the traditional interim process, which we have engaged in searches past, alongside a transition process that would involve an appointed Priest in Charge for an extended period of time. In this later approach, the Bishop recommends several candidates from whom we choose a Priest in Charge who is then appointed by the Bishop for a period of up to three years. During this time, he/she will do the same intentional work of looking at our past, healing, relationship building, and preparation for a healthy future as an Interim would, but would be able to stay on as permanent rector should we discern our pastoral relationship could fruitfully continue. The interim tasks would be clearly delineated between the Vestry and Priest in Charge with the Bishop’s advice and supervision. It is important to note that canonically, a Priest in Charge is accountable to the Bishop and does not have automatic tenure. Given the fragility of All Saints’, this relationship would have the benefit of the

Bishop’s more immediate supervision of our pastoral life and relationship with this next priest, offering a closer collaboration between the congregation, its priest and the Bishop. We believe this to be a wise decision given our current reality at All Saints’.

17-18 April: Parish retreat, Friday evening and all day Saturday

Bishop Mary will lead us in a discernment process whereby we all will be involved in the process of defining ourselves: What describes the spirituality of All Saints’? What are our needs?

This is an opportunity to consider ourselves and begin to reimagine ourselves by God’s grace. Out of this work we will create a description of the kind of Priest in Charge we seek.

Once Fr. Matters has left, the Bishop will recommend three or four candidates which the selection committee will consider. The work of the Parish Retreat should have given us a clear idea of our clergy needs as we understand them. The selection committee will evaluate and interview the candidates with the intention of joining the Bishop in calling our Priest in Charge sometime in the fall.

I urge everyone to get involved in this process. How can we define ourselves if we don’t know what YOU have to say? Everyone is important. The parish has been through a lot this past year, but WE are still here. WE are the parish of All Saints’ in Carmel-bythe-Sea and we are being called to a new future. We are deeply thankful for those who have shown their dedication to this parish by pledging. We hope those who have not yet pledged will take that next step in commitment to our future. The gift of money is an essential resource as we move forward, and just as important are the gifts of your voice, prayers, and presence.

May we continue to gather in worship, daily prayer offering for All Saints’, and stepping faithfully into this special time of discernment.

If you would like to be set shriven, or free from the guilt of yours sins, come to the chapel between 3:00 and 5:00 on Good Friday, April 3. If this time does not work for you, then make an appointment with Fr. Rick. There are two forms for the Reconciliation of a Penitent starting on page 447 of the prayerbook.

Maria Medina and her faithful substitute, Grace Sizemore will be leading children’s worship, at least during the transition. They are creatively supported by Grace Swearingen, who volunteers once a month. If you would like to join them, please contact Maria or Fr. Rick.

HOLY WEEK: Preparing for Easter The powerful liturgies of Holy Week invite us to make a spiritual journey. Day by day, we follow Jesus’ footsteps: his triumphal entry into Jerusalem; his washing of the disciples’ feet at the Last Supper; his vigil in the Garden of Gethsemane; and his arrest, trial, and crucifixion.

Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday:

March 29 (8am, 10:30am, 5:30pm) Holy Week begins: after a joyful palm procession, we hear St. Matthew’s somber Passion Gospel.

Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday:

March 30 to April 1 (5:30pm) Simple spoken Eucharist with silent meditation. Held in the chapel, on the corner of Ninth and Lincoln.

Maundy Thursday: April 2 (12 noon and 7pm)

Our noonday service highlights the Last Supper, while the evening liturgy focuses on Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet and concludes with the stripping of the altar for Good Friday. Both services include Holy Communion.

The Watch:

April 2− April 3 (8:00pm to 12 noon) For many Christians, keeping watch before the Blessed Sacrament is a treasured Holy Week devotion. The Watch begins after the 7pm Maundy Thursday service, and lasts until the beginning of the noon Good Friday service.

Good Friday:

April 3 (12 noon and 7pm) The Episcopal liturgy for Good Friday includes the reading of St. John’s Passion Gospel, veneration of the cross, and communion from the reserved Sacrament.

Easter, the “Queen of Feasts,” is honored with glorious music, beautiful flowers, and our finest liturgies as we hear the story of the Resurrection, proclaim our hope in God, and share Holy Communion. Descriptions of each service and event are given below.

At the 10:30 service on February 15, eight of our members processed bright red letters spelling ALLELUIA out of the liturgy. These letters are tied in purple yarn and are sitting in the back of the church. They will be processed back into the liturgy at the Great vigil of Easter.

Approximately forty people enjoyed another delicious meal prepared by Sameera Sharif. New members were welcomed by those who had been welcomed at one of the other Welcoming Dinners, and by long-term members. Barbara Moning was recognized for her history with All Saints’ because as a child she visited her grandparents, who joined the congregation in 1915!

Thank you to those of you who signed up to bring soup, bread, or salad to one of the suppers. It is always fun to enjoy different homemade soups from our members. There are still some opportunities to contribute to these simple and wholesome meals. Contact the office during the week, or check the sign-up at the back of the church on Sunday.

Treasurer’s Report Jan. 31, 2015

Our new year has begun well. We showed a modest surplus at month’s end of $436.26, which is all the more remarkable when taking into account the fact that we made our final Fair Share payment for 2014 in January in the amount of $9,116.15. While this is standard procedure, the amount of our final payment was unusually large when compared to the final payment made in January of 2014, which was only $2,122. This was mostly due to the generous financial support we received in December 2014 to get us to the end of that year in good shape and the fact that we were by then well into the 20% bracket for Fair Share calculation purposes. Also, there was a residual Fair Share obligation from November 2014 of just under $1,000 that we felt should be carried into the new year due to our then uncertainty about how December 2014 would play out. While it is encouraging to get off to a good start - and February is shaping up nicely so far - we remain diligent with each passing day to make sure we stay on course for the challenging times ahead. Thanks to each and every one of you because you are the Church and we will make our own future as best we can. Bless you all.

Tapestry on Consignment

We are privileged to show the Mark Adams tapestry that is hanging in the baptistery. It is on consignment from Winfield Gallery, on Ocean Avenue. The owner would like to sell it, and we are hoping that someone would purchase it as a gift to All Saints’.

Of course, someone could purchase it for personal use. However, we are the home of several Mark Adam pieces, including the larger tapestry, now hanging downstairs in Seccombe Hall, a rose window, now in storage, and the baptistery itself, which is a dynamic work of art.

Discipleship Confirmation

Bishop Mary will celebrate confirmation at All Saints’ on Sunday, April 19. (Those confirmed in certain other traditions may be received into the Episcopal Church, rather than confirmed.) This sacrament is open to all adults, as well as youth in middle or high school. Please sign up in the back of the church or by contacting the parish office. A series of preparatory classes will be offered.

Seeking God in Christ

St. Paul exclaims: “I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me.”

(Galatians 2:20) Here is the goal of Christian life: to know Christ living in us and bringing us into communion with God by the Holy Spirit. It is this goal we seek to realize in the Friends of St. Benedict, by praying together, studying the Rule of St Benedict and the Christian classics, and sharing this quest together.

The Church has a wonderful tradition of spiritual wisdom and practice. We explore this tradition together and hope that by our prayer and worship, study and service, we may “have the power to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:18-19).

Lenten Series– An Adventure in Faith

We will use several inspiring videos by National Geographic photographer Dewitt Jones on how to reframe our perception of the world. These videos will prompt conversations about seeing the world through the lens of our faith. The Wednesday evening series, beginning on February 25, offers a creative way to prepare for the joyful and transformative power of Easter. We’ll begin with soup at 6:00 p.m., continue with videos and conversation at 6:30, and close with prayer at 7:15. Child care and a homework room will be provided upon request.

Outreach Our Outreach Commission

This Spring, All Saints’ Outreach Commission continues to help those in need: 3 First, we will donate the contents of all Lenten boxes to St. Patrick’s church in Haiti.

3 Secondly, we will have a warm clothing, blanket, sleeping bag and new white socks drive, which we will give to those in need and the homeless community.

3 Third, we will promote locally the fact that we offer daily food bags. and use other churches, the Carmel Foundation and possibly the police department to convey this message.

3 Fourth, we will continue to host the IHELP dinners once a month, having changed the date from the fourth Friday to the second Monday.

3 Fifth, we will continue to support the Joining Hands Benefit shop and the Epiphany church and their programs in Marina.

3 And finally, we will review our fund raising capabilities in order to raise on going and much needed revenue.

I-Help News

All Saints has been hosting the IHELP men for over 20 years, and was one of the founding churches that provide a hot meal, lunch, breakfast and overnight accommodations once a month to about 26 homeless men.

Grace Nola has graciously offered to lead the IHELP dinners, taking over from Aliceon Jones, who led for numerous years.

Aliceon will still be assisting, as will I and the countless others who have helped over the years. And as of February, the IHELP dinners have changed to the second Monday of every month from the fourth Friday. If you are interested in helping, please contact Grace. Thanks.

Friends of St. Partick’s School, Haiti and our Lenten clothing collection Lenten Giving Boxes

California friends of St. Patrick’s School, Haiti, will have a gala Bar-B-Que in April, at All Saints’. We welcome anyone who would like to hear more about this wonderful project. California friends is comprised of members from St. Jude’s, Cupertino, Good Samaritan, formerly St. Edward’s, San Jose, All Saints’ Day School and All Saints’ Church. Contact Fr. The Marina police have the combination to the lock and can draw upon it any time of the night or day for those in need. Our box for items will be by the table in the church starting with Lent. Warm clothing, in clean condition and lightly worn, plus new socks, tee shirts and underwear in packages, in all sizes are needed.

Lenten Giving boxes: Especially during Lent, it is a good feeling to put a coin or a bill in the Lenten Giving Boxes. This is an old tradition at All Saints’: giving thanks for our blessings. Mine include: My friend Fido, the gift of Life, friends and family and a good report from the dentist! Boxes are on the table. Pick up will be Easter Sunday. Funds go to St. Patrick’s School, where a trip in May will insure accountability. This is a very poor area and the help is most gratefully appreciated.

Welcoming Spring at Santa Lucia

Spring is coming early to Santa Lucia Campground and Chapel.

We had hoped for rain in January but it finally came in February.

Washing away the old and creating the new. We watched as the river washed away all the old debris. When walking the campground we see all the new growth that is happening.

Hopefully we will see more rain in the coming weeks.

AllSaints’ • Lent 2015

The Diocese of El Camino Real 34th Annual Convention

This past year, All Saints Church sent four delegates to the 34th Annual Convention held in Salinas this past November.

Our delegates and ministers were present: Susan Stanton, Grace Swearingen, Jennifer Suttie, and Lorrie Sizemore, as well as Chaplain Holly Hudson-Louis and Mother Cynthia M. Spencer. Attending the annual convention gave each of us an opportunity to converse with many interesting people from other churches in our Diocese. While every presentation was valuable and interesting, the most relevant part of the Convention was Bishop Mary’s Convention Message regarding engaging communities and building relationships at a time of decline in church attendance. Bishop Mary spoke of the importance of creating a culture of healthy stewardship in growing our church membership and the mistaken tendency of trying to create programs and activities solely to expand membership and attract the consuming public. Bishop Mary stated “while a focus on growth is good, an obsession with growth is not.”

During the past year, the Vestry has struggled with this very question in response to our declining Sunday attendance. A critical theme in her address to the Convention was “Being the Church” and discovering more fully “how we are living our essence in relation to the gospel and to the world, to hear truth that challenges us from both places, and in the safety of grace, have the courage to change as we might be called.” Bishop Mary ended her address by discussing the importance walking together in community in the way of Jesus. As we enter this season of Lent and contemplate the many changes that we will all experience in the All Saint’s community here in Carmel, the words of the Bishop were very moving and relevant.

Keepers of the Bells

A group in Carmel has restarted a tradition of tolling the bell at noon each day.

You might have read about this in the Pinecone. You might hear the bells ringing. The vestry agreed to include our bell. Fr. Rick and a neighbor, Charles Fox, are among the Keepers of the Bells. If you would like to participate, let the office know.
