Letter from our Priest-in-Charge Dear All Saints’, We’ve passed the half year mark and I am amazed at how time moves so quickly. In the beginning of our sojourn together, I found everyone to be so quiet and now All Saints’ seems to be bubbling over with enthusiasm. It’s a pleasure for me to witness you getting in touch with your joy and remembering who you are as a community of faith. I often hear, from out-of-state visitors, that All Saints’ is such a wonderful group and that they would like to join except they live too far away. People are attracted to the love and hospitality that we have to offer.

Our aim for the next two years focuses on renewing and revitalizing the community and ministry of All Saints’. A first step towards renewal takes us back to the very beginning, to the basic questions of spiritual formation: 1) Who are we as a people of God?, 2) Why are we here?, 3) Where is God calling us to be?, 4) How can we be present to God’s presence? As we begin to give ourselves to these questions allowing them to probe our hearts we will rediscover our faith and hopefully we will find new meaning for our life’s journey.

This Fall we will offer a formation class designed for anyone who would like to revitalize their spiritual life. Those who wish to become a member of All Saints’ or those who are seeking baptism, confirmation, or reaffirmation of vows will be required

to take the class. (The Bishop’s Visitation will be October 30th).

Anyone can join us! We will be reading Seeking God: The Way of St. Benedict by Esther de Waal. The details of the class will be posted at a later date.

Another opportunity for spiritual formation will come to us through hosting the art exhibit, Icons in Transformation, by the internationally renowned artist, Ludmila Pawlowska. The exhibit, which will be displayed in the nave and the parish hall, will show both traditional Russian icons and contemporary art inspired by traditional icon-writing techniques.

To accompany the exhibit we are organizing a series of lectures, concerts, and workshops with an opening Gala on September 25, 2016. Save the date!

I am looking forward to entering this time of learning, discovery, and renewal with you!

Sr. Warden letter to the congregation

Welcome to the latest issue of All Saints’ Alive. We have our tech expert, Jennifer Suttie to thank for making this a reality and Ray Krise to thank for orchestrating its contents.

As I write this, I, once again, contemplate all the hands it takes to keep this parish up and running. It is so easy to come to a service on Sunday and not really be aware of all that goes on to make Sunday happen, not to mention all the parish activities that occur during the week.

Susan Stanton is coordinating our Pastoral Care. All Saints' arranges a monthly Eucharist at the Cottages of Carmel. Susan is coordinating visits and phone calls to our many home-bound members. If you are aware of someone in the hospital or suffering from a long term illness or other difficulty, don’t hesitate to talk to Susan. Her pastoral care number is (602)622-0682.

Duane and Pat Gomes manage the campground and are dedicated to keeping it in good repair.

Kathy Kirkwood, our dedicated choir director, works untiringly seeking music appropriate for our small ensemble yet complex enough to be interesting and also fitting for the liturgical season. The choir meets Thursday evenings from 7 to 8:30 and is always ready to welcome new members. We warm up at

9am on Sunday morning to fine tune the Sunday anthem.

And your handy-dandy bulletin that makes following the service a piece of cake…that takes a great deal of planning and time to put together. (So forgive us for the occasional glitch.)

Saturdays, Raul keeps the church spiffy inside and out, puts up and takes down our various liturgical decorations designed by Susan Britton, and on occasion has the additional duty of setting up and cleaning up for weddings.

The Altar guild (Mila, Candace, Bill, Ellen, Sameera, Gwynn, Sherry, Rosemary) washes the dishes, sets the table, replaces the candles, sees that we have flowers, maintains the vestments and linens etc., etc. (A little secret: Mila is a genius with a needle.)

The ushers not only hand out bulletins, but set up for coffee hour, greet people, present the oblations and alms and are prepared to help in emergencies. Thank you to Don Britton and his crew.

Vestry News From Clay Couri to All Saints' Parrish:

I am completely and humbly grateful to Pastor Amber, and all of you who brought me Communion, visited me, prayed for my return to health, and laid hands on the prayer shawl which was presented to me in the hospital during my extremely close brush with mortality in late March. My doctors have declared my swift recovery a miracle. Although I will have a significantly low energy level for a few weeks ahead, I have started to regain my coordination at the organ and am again experiencing the joy of practicing when in town, with the goal of rejoining Richard at the organ bench and Claudia at the harp for a service with joyful music which I'll offer in gratitude, for our Lord has indeed saved me to play again. Thank you, all, from the heart!

Buildings & Grounds:

The Buildings & Grounds Committee has been busy with a long list of minor to major repairs and improvements in many areas of our property. A large part of the work during the past few months consisted of an ambitious landscaping project in the front yard of the Griffin House, our rectory. Many new plants and bushes have been added to the rejuvenated sandy soil along with flowers and other greenery of many varieties known to be

fairly drought tolerant. Last year a large eucalyptus tree which was interfering with cable service lines was removed, and in its place are some of the new additions. Along the front of the property from the street to the front wall, there have been placed several ground cover plants and a bark-covered pathway just outside the wall. New lighting for the pathway to the house is in the plans for completion as well as the placement of some stone slabs to form a small circular patio near the center of the yard.

If you have not seen what has been done, please take a look next time you are in that area; we think you will be impressed.

Construction of the Memorial Garden in the upper patio is the subject of another article in this issue, so you are referred to that writing for information about progress there.

There never seems to be a lack of projects to address and the need for parishioners to help, not necessarily to do the work itself but to do the planning and supervising. If you have the slightest interest in joining with others to beautify and keep in service the buildings and grounds God has given us to tend, please consider joining the B&G Committee. Remember, many hands make light work!

Memorial Garden Update

Wonderful goings on! The long awaited Memorial Garden is almost finished! The drainage is being fixed so that we won’t have future problems. The new Carmel stone cross pathways and flower beds will be going in soon. Our lovely old historic cross will now be the focal point of a beau-tiful, peaceful garden where memorial stones for our departed dear ones will line the paths and we can sit and enjoy this new contemplative spot.

Many of you have asked about the disposition of ashes.

Although the Memorial Garden is not a columbarium, we can still scatter or bury ashes on the property as long as they are not in a container. You can even have a few pinches of ashes scattered or buried in the little garden plots adjacent to your memorial stone. There is a form to fill out and a small fee is required by the County Health Department. The church will help you facilitate that process.

We will be happy to provide you with to be placed, and have it engraved now for a departed one. Or you can purchase now and wait to engrave later. The stones are as much detail as you want. designed to be removable, engraved at a later date, and reinstalled at that time. The stones can accommodate three lines of type. Examples of the stones as well as a sign up sheet can be viewed at the back of the church by the north side. Each stone is $500.00.

Worship Worship at All Saints'

When I joined the vestry there was an undertaking to determine what values were important to our members.

We had several congregational meetings. We asked many questions, in an effort to determine where and how we could improve as a parish. This discernment process led me to understand that worship, for All Saints’ members follows many paths.

The most obvious path was that of traditional services. But there were other worship ideas that emerged. Among them was the desire to incorporate more children in our services, either through their participation or by the inclusion of prayers written by children. Another suggestion was that congregants create a book of prayers. There were responses which called for greater community building activities, small groups, volunteering opportunities and improved communication.

One only has to look at these ideas and the many different groups with which we are involved to see the different ways our members worship. Just a few are: the bible study group, the friends of St. Benedict and we even have Christian yoga. Truly, I think each time members of our parish join one another in a church sponsored event they are worshiping. They are paying homage to God, not only formally, by attending services or singing in the choir, but by participating in Christian centered activities. The service our parishioners render to the community at large as well as to our own members is another manifestation of their worship.

So it is clear to me that worship is many faceted. It cannot be relegated to the Sunday services or the hymns that are sung. It is really how we live our lives. Everything we do in following our faith at All Saints’ is a way in which we worship our Lord Thanks and God bless you, Susan P.S. from Claudia Ward: Susan surprised us all by moving to Virginia to be near her daughter. We thank her for her years of dedication to the parish by serving on the vestry and the Santa Lucia Commission (Big Sur Campgrounds). She will be missed.

Discipleship Come Join our Bookclub The All Saints’ Book Club has been in operation for fourteen years. The group, which currently includes about 20 members, meets in the church library the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. to share a potluck meal and to discuss the current book selection. The Book Club provides an enriching, educational and inspiring opportunity to read and grow. The members look forward to discovering new ways of thinking and to opening themselves to the possibilities of change. The Book Club chooses a variety of books: spiritual, fiction, and non-fiction.

Community The Little Free Library

by Candace DiLello All Saints’ has a new community outreach called The Little Free Library. You may have noticed it in front of the church courtyard under the holly trees near the sidewalk. It’s a neighborhood free lending library.

Little Free Libraries are all over the nation now, and there are several in our local communities. As the sign on the little library says, you can take one out and put one back in. It can be the same book, or another one altogether.

We have stocked it the first time with books donated by our very own book group. If you want to donate books for the little library, please bring them to the office or put them directly into the little library if there is room. There’s no paperwork involved.

No records kept. It’s there for everyone’s use and enjoyment. So take a peek and see if there’s anything you’d like to read.

Just put it or another book back inside so everyone can share in the pleasure of a good read!

Presenting, Minor, the Church Cat

If you attended the 10:30 Eucharist on Sunday, June 12th, you became acquainted with Minor, the Church Cat…self-appointed, rather smug, church cat.

Minor has an owner, attested to by his collar, bell and lovely grey coat, somewhere on Dolores Street, but he has discovered a world all to himself, quite to his liking: All Saints’ Church. On any given day, one can see Minor exploring the gardens, walking the fence, visiting in the office or lounging in the chancel while the organ is being played. He even walked into a vestry meeting once. He better watch out; we’ll give him a job.

On Jun 12th, he really made a spectacle of himself. About half way through the service he sauntered (the only word that describes it) up the center aisle, tail vertical, looking quite handsome in his grey suit, white ascot and spats. He trotted up the chancel steps, took a right turn at the altar, made a circuit of the high altar area then, catching a whiff of delicious aromas wafting up from the kitchen, trotted through the sacristy and downstairs. All the cooks must have been attending church, as he was soon back. This time, he made himself comfortable, just behind Richard who was in the middle of a hymn.

Minor stretched out, rolled around on his back, then settled down to take a bath.

After enjoying the music a while, Minor must have decided he’d had enough religion for one Sunday, so up he got, and home he trotted, through the altar rail (the gate being closed) down the aisle and out the door.

He Has Risen Indeed

It was Christmas morning 1978 when the telephone rang -- it was little Mickie, our nephew. He proudly announced, “Christ Is Risen!” His parents gently corrected him, but the next Christmas Mickie said it again.

It was Christmas morning 2015 when the I-Phone chimed -- it was big Mike with his wife and children. He proudly announced, “Christ Is Risen!” Yes, this has become a family tradition. Each Christmas, and Easter, Mike calls and makes his announcement.

At first this was a cute mistake, but our family soon realized how profound this mis-take was. Christ is risen every day. Each day is a new day. He is with us always. We just need to be aware, mindful and open to His presence.

If Mickie’s parents, my sister and her husband, were closed-minded and dogmatically corrected him, we would not have had the space to consider new ideas. Thankfully, they were open-minded and as the years grew the true meaning of Mickie’s announcement grew.

Now we usually greet each other with, “Christ Is Risen!”

The Big Sur Mission Comes into Being

by Elizabeth Barratt, All Saints' Historian Over the years the serene, wooded setting at Santa Lucia Campgrounds has been a favored destination for church picnics, outdoor worship services, retreats, and of course, camping, under the towering redwoods alongside the gentle flow of the nearby Big Sur River.

The idea for establishing a mission in Big Sur began with Fr. David Hill in August 1959, with services at first held in the Big Sur Grange Hall. Within a year, services were so well attended the Hall couldn’t hold all the worshippers. The recently arrived Fr. Peter Farmer noted, “Suitable land is available, although prices are not low, and we pray that churchmen may be moved to make possible the acquisition of some of this magnificent area for the glory of God and the rest and refreshment of His people.”

Thus began the Big Sur Mission. Acreage that had once belonged to the Pfeiffer family was purchased in April 1961 from its next owner, Hans Ewoldsen, at a cost of $30,000, payable over a five-year period. The Mission and campgrounds were aptly named Santa Lucia in honor of the seaward slanting mountain range originally described by Spanish navigators who plied the Big Sur seacoast centuries earlier.

The first official service at the Santa Lucia outdoor chapel by the river was held at 10:30 a.m. on April 9, 1961. It was a banner day for the mission’s founder, Fr. Hill, as he and the chapel’s newly appointed Fr. Peter Farmer celebrated the Eucharist on the site for the first time.

Fr. David Hill’s dream, of a silent and beckoning spot which he called, “untouched by bulldozers and hamburger counters,” still stands as a testament to the diligence of the early founders, who foresaw the tranquil appeal of the forested acreage. In Fr. Hill’s words, still true today, the grounds are “a silent witness to the beauty of God Creator and to our obligation to preserve His beauty for our children.”

Financial Report In 2014 the parish lost membership because of dissatisfaction with the rector, then rather ironically, in 2015, others decided to leave because the rector left!

As a result, our pledge income has been affected rather dramatically. In 2013 we had 98 pledging units, 67 in 2015 and this year we are down to only 54. It is quite clear that we are now a small parish. I don’t believe we will stay that way as in spite of our size, we are a vibrant, dedicated group full of the Spirit.

One of the themes resulting from our June 12th discussion on sustainability was the need for us to take responsibility for the well-being of the parish. The vestry has already taken decisive action to balance the budget, making a mid-year revision reflecting reduced expenditures, but equally important is the need for an increase in the number of pledges.

Because of the turmoil between 2013 and 2015 our pledge income fell from $234,000 to $112,000, from 98 pledging units to 67.

Our current 54 pledges total $95,000. The good news is that we have 9 new members and 4 new pledges, evidence that we are

healing and growing. We believe that this trend will continue.

The reality is that our budget reflects a $42,500 deficit which ideally needs to be covered by new monies: either new or increased pledges, donations or other income. Because of the generosity of a former parishioner, inspired by the Holy Spirit, we have $40,000 from an unrestricted bequest that could rescue us, however, we, the vestry, believe that is it far more responsible to invest that money for the long term and take responsibility for our own upkeep.

If you have not yet made a financial pledge, we ask you to please consider doing so at this time. If you have made a pledge for this year, your vestry thanks you for your commitment and asks you to give some thought to increasing your pledge, if only by a few dollars, or if you prefer, a one-time gift.

Community "Icons in Transformation"- Coming soon to All Saints' "Iconic" is the word for a unique exhibition of contemporary art and artifacts coming to Carmel in September. The exhibition, titled "Icons in Transformation," presents over 200 paintings, sculptures, frescos and tapestry weavings, some over 8 feet tall, which will be on display at All Saints' Episcopal Church and at selected galleries throughout the area from September 25th through November 20th.

The bulk of the exhibit was created by Russian artist Ludmila Pawlowska, and includes many of her large-scale metal, limestone and gesso covered sculptures and paintings. They are juxtaposed with enduring religious art forms, some from early Christian history to modern times. The exhibit, sponsored in conjunction with the Nordic Art Council of Copenhagen, has toured internationally to cathedrals and museums and has met with critical acclaim. This is its first Northern California tour.

During the two-month event, All Saints' Episcopal Church will offer lectures, workshops for adults and children, concerts and tours to facilitate the exhibit and enhance the study of this historic art form called "windows to heaven." Speakers include faculty members from the Graduate Theological Union and Stanford University discussing the history of iconography, and even a popular mystery on the subject of a stolen icon. Concerts will feature performances by the Monterey Symphony Chamber Music Players, the Anna Petrova Trio and Bach Festival musicians.

Workshops for adults in the time-honored technique of icon building are planned. Youth will enjoy four weekly excursions

into the world of gesso-covered boards and luminescent paints.

Tours will take place daily. Group tours and lectures are also available. A schedule of Fall events may be found on the All Saints' website at www.allsaintscarmel.org Artist and visionary Ludmila Pawlowska was born in exile. Her father, a dissident, was deported to the gulags of Siberia following the Russian revolution of the 1920s and the rise of Joseph Stalin.

Her mother fled to Kazakhstan, where Ludmila (Mila) was born. But Mila, a child prodigy, knew she was destined for an artistic lifestyle and eventually she departed to Moscow for study in contemporary art. This exhibit indicates the pain, suffering and eventual redemption she experienced through her family and its trials. It is this "iconic" art that depicts not decoration or illustration, but realism--sometimes savage, sometimes spiritual, but always as transformative in this day and age as it was thousands of years ago.

All Saints' will sponsor an opening night gala with the artist on Sunday, September 25th, at the church's Seccombe Hall. A reception will follow, where attendees will have the opportunity to preview and select art to purchase prior to the public opening.

Message from Father Ion St. John's Greek Orthodox Church For the Orthodox, Lent, Holy Week and the Paschal celebration are a very busy time in terms of participation in the life of the Church.

This year, our small community was blessed to experience these holy days at its new location in Carmel. It was a most beautiful one, not only because of the magnificent location of All Saints’ Church, but also because our community began to feel very comfortable with the place, and, more importantly, with the people who have welcomed us.

Many times God surprises us with more than our wishes and requests. Our presence in Carmel is such an example of how abundant God’s blessings are upon us. Saint John’s Church was looking for space to rent on the Peninsula for years. Last December the doors at All Saints opened totally unexpectedly, and not only were we offered plenty of space to operate, but we received much more than that: open arms, love and support from those who host us. This was just the beginning of a relationship, a gift from God that we treasure and thank Him for daily.

With the gift of our relationship also come opportunities and responsibilities. As we progress in the journey of this relationship, we are pioneering new territory and exploring points where our paths could cross, mature, and bring fruit in Christ. Among those that are coming up are “The Icons in Transformation” event this fall, outreach projects, and religious education for children.

On behalf of Saint John’s community I express our deep gratitude to All Saints’ Church, for embracing us so warmly! I am also very thankful to the Church leadership, Bishop Mary and Pastor Amber for giving the blessing for such an endeavor and to Claudia and the Vestry for their continuous support. I pray that the Lord will fill in what is missing and enable us all to serve Him with love, humility and enthusiasm for the glory of His name.

Summer at Santa Lucia Campground and Chapel This year, camping Santa Lucia was interrupted by the Soberanes Fire. The camp ground is safe, but due to smoke and fire warnings many camp sessions had to be cancelled, including the Parrish Picnic.
