Dear Readers, This spring issue officially represents the third issue of Cusp, and my final issue working on the editorial board of the newsletter. It is my pleasure to have served as UCSF ASDA's Newsletter Editor this year. With the help of Omid this year and Emily last year and the rest of the team I am proud of the newsletters we have created.

Each issue has strived to become a physical embodiment of the work, opinions, and advice that UCSF ASDA has gathered each quarter. Even though it is impossible to fully reflect the countless hours that the UCSF board and faculty has taken outside of class to provide colleagues a more comprehensive view of dentistry, I believe Cusp gives readers a view of the knowledge and experiences one can gain from UCSF ASDA. Thus, read on to become familiar with what we do at UCSF ASDA! Be sure to share this newsletter with your colleagues and friends. letter from the junior editor Dear Readers, I hope this issue of Cusp finds you well. We at UCSF ASDA have had a busy 2018 thus far. This newsletter will give you a tangible slice of what we’ve done and what we’ve achieved over the past few months.

Our members have written articles on our RAMp Up Funds Fundraiser, which raised $1,785, and our annual Admit Day, Symposium Day, and Easter Egg Hunt. Students have also written reflections on Lobby Day and Annual Session. If you couldn’t make one of UCSF ASDA’s events this past quarter and would like to know what it was all about, this is the place to start!

As usual, we have a wellness recipe, a faculty spotlight, and a recap of our lunch and learn sessions. We tried something different in this issue by asking D4s to talk about the benefits of ASDA and getting D0s to contribute.

We’re always striving for innovation, so if you have any ideas on how we can improve next time, don’t hesitate to let us know!

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT - A N N W O N G -

To all the ASDA Members, As the 2017-2018 school year comes to an end, I am excited and thrilled to see what huge accomplishments our UCSF ASDA chapter has achieved this year. From a successful 2nd Annual Business Symposium to our Admit Day with our future D1s, ASDA has truly exceeded my expectations this year.

I want to thank my wonderful board for all their hard work this year and for putting their energy, time, dedication, and love to this organization.

You all have shown how much ASDA means to you. Your motivation and all your efforts have definitely contributed to the future of ASDA and without you all, our chapter would not have been able to make so many events happen this year. So thank you for attending all the monthly meetings and pushing yourself to making UCSF ASDA a better chapter!

I also want to thank everyone who has attended our ASDA events from the countless lunch and learns to participating in our community service event Remote Area Medical (RAM) to attending Lobby Day in Washington, D.C. This year, we had the most applicants of 26 individuals to apply for our ASDA board for the upcoming school year. This shows that many individuals are motivated and inspired to be a part of ASDA! I am shocked and so amazed that ASDA has influenced so many committed and devoted dental students.

This past year at our Annual Session Conference in Anaheim, California, we were able to win not one, but three awards! Our chapter took home the Gold Crown Chapter Recognition Award, District 11 Leadership Development Grant, and our very own D3 Julianna Ko earned the Best Editorial Blog Post of the year. This shows that our chapter has developed into something bigger and better and that we have finally been recognized for this. I can’t wait to see what our chapter can accomplish next year at Annual Session.

And for the future of ASDA, I encourage everyone to continue to participate in our ASDA events and also volunteer for them! We put on the events for YOU so that we can help and guide our students in dental school. Whatever you want to see from UCSF ASDA, we can definitely help make that a reality. ASDA is here to guide our students through dental school and tries to supplement anything that is not taught here. Our ears are open and we are here to listen!

Again, I want to thank my amazing board this year for all the hard work they have put into this organization and to all our ASDA members for being so dedicated and inspired! Let’s continue this as we transition into our next school year.

LOBBY DAY REFLECTIONS

A handful of UCSF dental students attended the ADA Dentist and Student Lobby Day in Washington DC. There were dental students and dentists from across the nation that we all had the opportunity and privilege to meet. At the beginning of the conference, we learned how to meet with our respective members of Congress. We were split into groups that were designated to specific Congress members from our own districts.

We were all briefed and educated on the five main issues that we lobbied for: Response to the Opioid Epidemic, McCarran-Ferguson Repeal for Health Insurance, Student Loan Programs and the Higher Education Act, Dental and Optometric Care Access Act of 2017, and the Action for Dental Health Act. The lobbyists, which consisted of both dentists and dental students, were engaged, passionate, and enthusiastic. For the UCSF dental students that represented California, we each presented a specific issue to the Congress members and/or their assistants.

We all truly learned a lot over the duration of the conference. After attending this conference, I became a lot more interested in and aware of the efforts and activism that go into dentistry. I believe that the future of dentistry is in great hands and look forward to seeing all of the progress made both at the Capitol and at home.

William Lee ('21) I didn’t know what to expect from lobby day, truthfully. But overall, the conference and lobby day were very well organized and it was a great experience meeting dentists, other dental students, and congressional staff members. It was humbling to be in a room of over a thousand others who were behind the same causes as I was, leaving our personal beliefs behind to advocate for what dentistry and our patients need. We presented our ideas to congressional staffers and were met with a variety of responses, some for and some against our proposals. The most interesting meetings were those with staffer who held differing opinions from our own, since it helped me understand the complexity of many of the issues at hand.

The lobby day trip was not all business, though! It was also a lot of fun exploring D.C. and networking with people from all over the country. Looking back on the trip, I enjoyed conversing with many passionate dentists and I was proud to be an envoy for my classmates and dental students more broadly.

Hi there! I'm Dr. Diana Nguyen, Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences and one of the newest full-time faculty members at the UCSF School of Dentistry.

While most of my time is spent on the second floor in the Predoctoral Student Clinic, I also see patients of my own twice a week in the UCSF Dental Center's Faculty Group Practice and teach in the D2 course Patient Centered Care (PCC 129) on Friday afternoons. I'm thrilled to be a part of the UCSF Dental family and surrounded by kind, intelligent, and talented people every day who are passionate about oral health, advancing dental education, and making the world a better place.

When I received an offer to transition to full-time academia at UCSF, the idea of saying goodbye to my career in private practice and the community I loved in San Diego seemed almost impossible at the time! But now that I've been here almost six months, the experience of being an instructor has been so incredible that I can hardly envision my life without it. I am constantly amazed at how bright, driven, and compassionate my students are; it motivates me to stay as current as possible on the literature and biomaterials so I can help them become the best clinicians imaginable and support them as they realize their professional goals and dreams.

Good news for ten lucky D2s (at least, I hope they feel that way): I'm going to be a Clinical Coach next year and am really excited about leading you through your clinical experience at UCSF! For the rest of the Class of 2020, please enjoy my Top Five Tips For D2s Entering Clinic.

5 TRANSITION TIPS FROM DR. NGUYEN Don't be afraid to admit that you don't know something and take a few minutes to look up the information or locate someone who can help you. I do that all the time when students ask me questions I don't know the answers to!

Take pictures (without violating HIPAA!) of the gifts that patients bring or notes of appreciation they leave for you. When you have a rough day, you can scroll through these photos and remind yourself that you've made a positive impact on some of these people's lives.

You "MAKE" an impression. If anyone approaches me to say they're taking a final impression with me in clinic, they should be prepared to hear, "Oh, really? WHERE ARE YOU TAKING IT?" When treatment planning an anterior esthetic case, never bring me (or any other faculty) the upper cast to evaluate without the lower. Unless your patient doesn't have a mandible.

Under no circumstances should you ever feel ashamed of making a mistake, being less productive than your classmates, or feeling overwhelmed by the demands of clinic or dental school. Remember that you are not alone and there are always people around you who are willing to listen or help.

WELLNESS RECIPE

Potato Stew with Vegetables (and whatever else I need to use up in my fridge)

This is something that I like to make almost every week, mostly because the ingredients are pretty simple & inexpensive; it doesn't require a lot of active cooking time; I can make a large batch and eat it over the week; it doesn't require specific quantities of a certain food item.

My cooking style is flexible, so I don't have specific numbers for ingredients - you ultimately know how many potatoes/carrots/celery/garlic cloves you want to put in.

Basic ingredients: 1 onion - chopped Oil (I use olive oil but you can use anything you want) Some potatoes (however many you want to eat) - cut up into cubes (or whatever shapes you want)

Add-ons (optional): Garlic - minced, Tomatoes - chopped, Leeks/green onions - chopped, Celery/carrots - chopped, Lentils, Bacon/chicken/pork - cut into small cubes, Herbs (eg basil, thyme, rosemary... honestly, I just throw in whatever I grab first from my cupboard), salt and pepper In a large dutch oven/pot over medium heat, heat up your oil. (If you are using olive oil, make sure you don't overheat it - you know it's overheated when it starts smoking. But no fear! Just dump it out and try again.) You know it's heated right when you can run it around your pot really smoothly.

Throw in your minced garlic, onion, and bacon. Let it cook through. At this point, I just start throwing in all the other ingredients: potatoes, tomatoes, leeks, etc. Then, I fill up the pot with enough water to cover all the ingredients, bring the water up to boiling, and then let it simmer for 30-40 minutes, or until everything is cooked through. And that's it!

Sometimes I even mash up the potatoes after everything is cooked. It's a little haphazard, and maybe I am breaking some unknown culinary rules in fine dining, but this is something that is pretty quick and easy to make. I also don't get sick of it because you can change up the ingredients every week depending on what you have in your fridge.

RAMP UP FUNDS

BY PARISA MORAVEDJE TORBATY ('21) AND KATHERINE LEUNG ('20) The UCSF ASDA Community Service Co-Chairs organized a fundraiser, RAMp Up Funds, that took place primarily via Facebook to raise funds for Remote Area Medical (RAM). UCSF ASDA RAMp Up Funds raised $1,785 for RAM, a non-profit organization that provides free dental, vision, and medical services to those in need. There is need all over the world. RAM started its humanitarian work overseas before it realized how much need there was right here in the United States. Now, RAM serves and treats patients all over the United States, free of cost.

Organizations like RAM cannot run without the help of selfless volunteers nor could it run without funds. Because of this, UCSF ASDA hosted a fundraiser from April 27th until May 11th. The two students that raised the most funds were D2 Albert Ngo and D3 Audrey Duong. For participating and raising the most funds, dental students Ngo and Duong will be receiving a pair of FIGS scrubs! We hope that the dental students enjoyed learning more about a philanthropic organization with a great vision and mission, while giving back to a worthy cause!

ADMIT DAY RECAP

“I can’t wait to spend the next four (or forty years) with you,” said Brad Morgan, DDS Class of 2022, my new classmate and future lifelong friend.

On May 5th, 2018 myself and 67 of my future classmates from the DDS Class of 2022 attended Admit Day an event organized by the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) at UCSF School of Dentistry. This weekend event was filled with social events, helpful tips on how to succeed in the first year of dental school, presentations regarding the vast research and leadership opportunities available, demonstrations on human anatomy in the cadaver lab, hands-on manual dexterity exercises, as well as faculty and student panels.

It was action packed!

After spending some time getting to know my fellow classmates it was most enjoyable to hear hear the many stories that led each of us to UCSF’s dental program. I learned that we all come from diverse backgrounds, bring different life experiences and not one of us is exactly alike. While we all are different in our own unique ways we all share a common goal in becoming dental professionals. That unwavering passion for dentistry is where all of our paths connect. I believe that this combination of diversity and shared passion for dentistry is what sets UCSF School of Dentistry apart and is one of the many reasons I chose to attend this world renowned institution.

Admit day recap Continued As the first person in my family and a Bay Area native I am proud of the journey that led me to UCSF School of Dentistry. While my path may seem non-conventional I believe it was meant to be. I was homeschooled and graduated high school at fourteen which allowed me to start taking college courses and become a registered dental assistant (RDA). After working as an RDA for six years in multiple specialities and general dental practices I advanced my dental education and became a registered dental hygienist (RDH). For the last three years I have been working as an RDH in private practice and currently hold a faculty position teaching Periodontics to first year dental students in San Francisco. Now, the time is here, to start the next chapter in my dental education towards becoming a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) at UCSF School of Dentistry. My path, as winding as it may have felt at times, was completely worth every second of the journey. The path I traveled laid the foundation for the road ahead.

No matter what path you may have taken to get to dental school, Congratulations, YOU made it!

I could not have imagined a better way to start my dental school career than to be surrounded by such a compassionate and intelligent group of individuals. I look forward to learning from you and growing with you for the next four or forty years!

A huge thank you to all of the ASDA members, faculty, students, DentStay hosts who organized an amazing event and welcomed the DDS Class of 2022 to UCSF School of Dentistry.

SPRING LUNCH AND LEARN: CLINIC TRANSITION TAKEAWAYS

As the spring quarter nears its end, there is a palpable aura of excitement and apprehension filling the dental school. For first year students, this is largely from the ominous final exams looming over students’ heads and a blissful summer break right around the corner. For second year students, both feelings of elation and trepidation stem from the fact that entering clinic is only a few weeks away! Treating live human patients as opposed to working on a rubber mannequin and plastic teeth and navigating the bustling and complex clinic floors away from the safety of the Fleming Lab seem alien to many. To combat this nervousness, UCSF’s very own Dr. Cynthia Young and Dr. Natalie Hastings gathered a few of the best clinic faculty to host a three part series of lunch and learns on how D2s can prepare for clinic. Here are some of my biggest takeaways:

1) Be prepared. Whether it be filling out the radiographic interpretations worksheet the night before the COE or refreshing your memory on the different types crown designs it will always help you and benefit your patient to prepare ahead of your appointment.

2) Clinic faculty are there to HELP you. If it is the first time you are doing a procedure do not be afraid to tell them and ask for help early. They want to help you target issues at the beginning of the appointment not find you struggling and barely having started at 11:45 am or 4:45 pm.

3) Know where things are. The clinic is big and there are a multitude of carts and drawers! Knowing where materials are located before going into clinic will increase efficiency and decrease stress.

4) Present your patients with professionalism. Often times students get used to speaking in laymen terms so their patients understand treatment.

However, students should speak with appropriate dental jargon when presenting to the clinic faculty: i.e. There is large buccal caries extending to the middle third of dentin rather than there is a large hole on the side of the tooth.

5) Documentation documentation documentation. Writing concise but thorough notes is a skill that all dentists need. Many upperclassmen use pre-formed templates that cover the general basis of procedures. Ask your links or friends for their templates to get an idea of what you should be including in your notes.

6) Lastly, study the yellow clinic booklet and utilize the upperclassmen as your resources! The D3s and D4s that attended the lunch and learns emphasized that doing these two things will help you tremendously before you enter clinic.

"ASDA helps give you a taste of the dental world outside of dental school."

1. How has ASDA benefited you over the past 4 years?

Three free fancy toothbrushes! And of course so many lunch and learns that helped expand on topics that weren’t covered in school. These ranged anywhere from how to take care of yourself while in dental school, all the way to how to acquire your dental license.

2. What would you say to someone who was thinking about joining ASDA? Definitely worth it. The organization has a lot to offer that helps you grow as a budding dental professional. ASDA helps give you a taste of the dental world outside of dental school. Many of us lose sight of the world of dentistry that exist beyond the doors of UCSF, and ASDA helps serve as a reminder that after we graduate there is so much more to explore.

3. What are some of your favorite ASDA memories?

The recent full day ASDA symposium really was a nice memory that helped us see how much we’ve learned and how much we’ve grown over these four year. D1 year we would walk around vendor fairs not really understanding the products and services being offered, but this time we could have full real conversations about what was being offered.

4. What is something that you would like to see added to ASDA in the future?

It would be nice to have some networking events with local dentists so we can talk to dentists outside of dental school.

5. Do you plan on continuing with organized dentistry in your career? Why? We do plan to stay connected with organized dentistry – it’s nice to be part of a community that is specialized for dentists and makes an impact in our whole field.

ASDA EASTER EGG HUNT

Typodont teeth are a much-needed commodity here at UCSF Dental. D1s and D2s spend a great deal of time practicing most of their dental techniques in simulation lab before heading over to clinic and practicing on real patients. We have spent long nights in lab drilling away at these plastic teeth, making numerous mistakes and having to purchase new ones. Unfortunately, the price adds up, so UCSF’s ASDA decided to give our students a little treat this holiday.

On April 16, ASDA held their annual Easter Egg Hunt--Dental Edition at UCSF’s School of Dentistry, hosted by Mia Nguyen and Jessica Van. Over 150 typodont teeth and chocolates were hidden in colorful eggs all over sim lab and outside the first floor of the dental building. D1s and D2s scrambled to find these much sought-after prizes during lunchtime. Eggs were hidden in bushes, manikins, and even in glove boxes! The dental students that found the most eggs were eligible to win one of the three grand prizes, which included 10 typodont teeth or $10 gift cards to local cafes.

The winners of this year’s Egg Hunt were Sina Nezari (D1), Joseph Ordaz (D1), and Cari Yang (D1)!

Congratulations to these first year ASDA members for finding the most eggs!

The event was hosted after our long-awaited spring break and it provided for the perfect energy booster into the new quarter. The gloomy weather in San Francisco that Monday in addition to the morning full lectures had left the D1s and D2s feeling lethargic. In spite of this, once the first egg had been spotted, students quickly swarmed the dental building. This event was so positively received that many students claimed it to be one of ASDA’s best events. Joseph Ordaz quotes: “You guys have to do this again. Running around with everyone reminded me of my childhood.” Students filled the front deck and crowded around the elevators to claim their eggs in the dental lab. It was like a scene out of the movie “300” (okay… we may be over exaggerating this), but the drive to find more typodont teeth offered a great energy. Unfortunately, some students expressed a need for even more eggs next time because they were all found so quickly. Organizing this event was relatively easy, especially with the help of several classmates and our sim lab supplies coordinator, Yesi. We found working together to be very efficient, and we were thoroughly pleased with how successful and rewarding this event turned out. It was nice taking a break from studying for all the BMS and seeing our classmates relax and participate in a fun activity, we all probably have not done since grade school. In the future, we hope to continue hosting the ASDA Egg Hunt and possibly extend the time and number of prizes hidden around campus. We had a pleasure hosting this event and hope all our classmates enjoyed it as well!

FIRST TIMER'S REFLECTIONS ON ANNUAL SESSION 2018 The ASDA 2018 Annual Session was my first ever ASDA conference and I love every single seconds of it! I learn so much about how ASDA is run, who are the current leaders, what policies ASDA stand for, and what ASDA has to offer and this experience inspires me to be more involve in this awesome organization. I also got to attend great breakout sessions like “The Road to Building Your Own Dental Practice” and “Alternative Careers in Dentistry” that help me aware of the different options I have after graduation. There are also so many dental students from all over the U.S. It was really fun talking to them and get to know what the other schools are doing. Overall, the ASDA Annual Session is a great experience and I would highly recommend everyone to attend!
