Dear Readers, It is my pleasure to serve as UCSF ASDA's Junior Newsletter Editor this year. With the help of everyone on our team, I hope to give you an engaging and visually appealing newsletter that will keep you up to date with relevant stories and goings-on at the UCSF SOD. This winter issue officially represents the second issue of Cusp, UCSF ASDA's newly imagined newsletter. In it you can find articles about the 2017 National Leadership Conference, UCSF ASDA's Day in Dentistry, and some interesting Lunch and Learn and community service events from Fall Quarter. You will also be able to catch a few tips from Dr. Vaderhobli in our faculty spotlight.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT - A N N W O N G -

2017 was a great academic year filled with laughter, joy, and excitement. It has been such an incredible and rewarding year for our UCSF chapter. I want to thank everyone who have volunteered for UCSF ASDA, attended our numerous events, participated in our wellness challenges, and supported our chapter through social media. You have made our 2017 year amazing and memorable. Because of you, our UCSF ASDA chapter has grown tremendously and stronger than the previous years.

And the individuals who I want to thank the most are our ASDA board members. You have put all your hard work, time, and effort into making this organization what it is. You constantly are on top of your duties and responsibilities and make every event successful. Our board members are truly the backbone of ASDA and the reason why we hold the most events on campus. So, I want to thank you and dedicate for all that you have done.

For our 2018 academic year, we have a lot in store for our members! We will be hosting our 2nd annual Symposium Day, collaborating with other UCSF community service organizations like our SNDA/ASDA Walk, and also hosting our FIRST EVER Dental Formal with UOP! We want to appreciate you and thank you for your participation with ASDA and try to make your membership worth it as much as possible. You put in your time and effort into our organization, so we want to give back to you with as much benefits as possible.

Of course, we want to hear our members thoughts and feedback about what ASDA could do for our students. Your feedback is imperative to us and we want to hear what you have to say in order to grow even bigger and stronger.

Furthermore, I am proud of what UCSF ASDA has accomplished successfully and improved tremendously this past year. Each year, our chapter grows and strengthens that much more than the previous year and it honestly would not have been the same without our members and our ASDA board members. We shall go into 2018 with more enthusiasm and endless possibilities for us to explore!

ADVOCACY

About a week after I moved to San Francisco to start dental school, the Trump Administration announced that they would be ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in March. Part of me felt that this was just another blow after a year of the White House slowly chipping away at Obama-era policies, much like the hatchet that I finally learned how to use on my amalgam prep. Yet I realized that this time Trump's actions impacted something much closer to me - my future dental school community, those already here and those who hadn't applied yet. UCSF being the accepting campus that it is, swiftly organized a number of events, including a campus wide town hall to process what had just happened. I was struck by the bravery of the students who stepped forward to share their story with the campus and heartened by the passionate response of the school and the UC system, which sued the Trump Administration.

In the following months, I saw a number of students with 'migration is beautiful' buttons on their backpacks and clothing, all in solidarity with our community members under siege. I somehow knew that UCSF would be the right place for me to grow and learn more about how to be an active participant in the community. Unfortunately, that was only the start of what would be a rocky fall. As the quarter rolled on, we were the recipients of a steady stream of bad news. I caught bits and pieces of news about a chaotic legislature, the Russia investigation, and a stand against sexual harassment as I ran back and forth from anatomy lecture and lab. Though this news feels like it exists in a world outside of dental school, it has a very real impact on the lives of our future patients and on our careers as dentists. Here are a few brief highlights, especially for us dental students.

Health Insurance In the fall, the Republican Party notably tried and failed to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Now instead of blatantly repealing it, they are slowly undermining it through health care tax cuts and budget cuts. These tax cuts will only add to our financial deficit and burden our healthcare system since lawmakers did not plan a way to offset the tax cuts. They may even reach the Medicare system in addition to Medicaid. The dramatic tax changes made federal budget talks even more fraught, especially in the last few weeks of January. After months of hanging in uncertainty, funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) was reauthorized for six more years as part of the deal that ended the government shutdown. CHIP includes dental health insurance for children.

In December, Republicans voted to stop fining people who chose to remain uninsured, effectively ending the individual mandate, which requires individuals to have health insurance.

This is the bedrock of the health care system and leads to the question, if individuals are not required to have health insurance anymore, then why should employers or the government provide it? GOP representatives Devin Nunes of California(R) and Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania(R) recently introduced a bill, supported by party leaders, to end the employer mandate that requires employers to provide coverage to employees. This could be devastating to adult dental coverage in our country. Over 93% of the 157 million Americans with private dental benefits receive them through their employer, according to the National Association of Dental Plans. As future health providers, we are always trying to expand access to care, but when the human rights concept of 'health care for all' is threatened, it can be difficult to increase access to care through our government.

DACA and ICE raids

Tax Bill

The Republican party has frequently used DACA as a bargaining chip despite the fact that it deeply influences the lives of over 700,000 people. Over the past 4 months, negotiations have stretched on in DC leaving DREAMers in a legal limbo about their future in this country. When I started writing this piece, the United States government was under shutdown. It has since been resolved with a deal that supposedly promises DACA recipients a path to citizenship in exchange for 28 billion dollars towards a wall along our southern border. However, the path forward for DREAMers continues to be ambiguous as activists and Democrats will need to keep Republicans accountable to the deal.

The 'Tax Cuts and Jobs Act' passed at the end of 2017 promises sweeping tax cuts for corporations and all Americans, with the largest cuts going to the wealthiest five percent. When the bill was initially proposed, it called for graduate students to pay taxes on the tuition fees that are waived through their work teaching at the university. It also eliminated tax deductions for students paying back their student loan debt and interest. Due to the mobilization of students across the country, these measures were removed from the bill before it passed last December. Despite students not being directly affected, we will be feeling the repercussions of this bill for years to come as it was the most comprehensive tax overhaul in 30 years.

While the public battle for DREAMer amnesty has monopolized headlines, the federal government continues to authorize Immigrations Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids to arrest and deport unauthorized immigrants. Raids seem to target 'sanctuary cities,' which publicly opposed the Trump Administration during the first months of his term.

Hundreds, maybe thousands, of arrests have been made in cities such as Chicago, Austin, and Los Angeles, but the actual numbers are unknown due to a lack of transparency from ICE.

All of these negative headlines on top of a demanding academic schedule can make us feel apathetic, but it is more important than ever for us to stay politically aware. This doesn't mean that we need to sit down and read a book about the history of structural inequalities in the US or attend a protest. We can start by periodically checking news sources other than Facebook, listening to podcasts, and voting. The dental world is not a bubble-the current political situation will undoubtedly influence our student life, our future practices, and most importantly, our patients. Many dental organizations lead us to think about legislation as a mechanism that we can utilize to benefit our profession. I understand that it is important to propagate the success of our profession, but the core of our profession is caring for patients and advocating for their rights. We have to understand our position of privilege as a health care provider and how we can use it to promote health equity in a country that is founded on inequality.

5 TIPS FOR THE CLINIC FROM DR. VADERHOBLI 1)

To test the halogen curing light for heat output, put the light tip on your fingernail and turn on the light for 20 seconds. If you can feel your nail getting hot, then your unit produces enough heat to cause some pulpal sensitivity in deep preparations. Use a stream of cool air on the composite during curing to help reduce the heat delivered to the tooth.

2) Not all light-cured bonding agents are compatible with chemical-cured composites, so follow the manufacturer's recommendations when selecting a bonding agent for the core material 3) Use copious water spray when shaping set Glass ionomer.Glass ionomers are susceptible to desiccation 4) Use Resin Modified Glass ionomers (RMGI) as bases under deep composite restorations to reduce post op sensitivity 5) Use RMGI in situations where a dry field cannot be maintained for more than a minute.

NATIONAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE WRAP UP "No one notices normal," said Kevin Brown the opening speaker of NLC 2017 in Chicago. Whether it be just a quick conversation in passing or a formal meeting we were told it is important to treat every encounter with a person as if they were the most important person in the world.

For three days, ASDA UCSF learned key traits and actions to leadership and met with ASDA chapters from around the nation at NLC Chicago.

From the key note speakers to the breakout sessions we learned from current leaders in the dental profession, how to stand out and be noticed in the current dental environment.

After a long day of lectures, we were treated to a dinner cruise courtsey of Medpro and were introduced to various vendors during the vendor fair.

The ASDA NLC meeting was great experience that showed how ASDA gives back to its members to prepare us to be leaders both in school and beyond.

NATIONAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE TAKE AWAYS

My favorite part of ASDA Conferences is the breakout sessions. There is a huge range of topics, from CV writing to conflict management in private practice to standing out in clinic. The hardest part of attending a breakout session is that you don’t have a Time Turner (Harry Potter reference) and you can’t attend all of them.

In any case, I wanted to share some of what I learned with you! Here are some tips and advice from dentists in private practice: 1. Invest in yourself • Take CEs (e.g. learn about new technology, leadership or businesses management, and unique procedures) • Learn how to read profit and loss statements 2. Learn and incorporate latest dental technology in your practice if it helps with efficiency • Laser dentistry – can be used for multiple procedures, including crowns and even decontamination in cleanings • CAD/CAM – can be used to a) make crowns with a milling unit in your office b) evaluate how your preps look after scanning them in c) image a patient’s mouth for clear aligner therapy, nightguards/retainers, or surgical stents d) and of course, more that I have not listed 3. Choose the right labs • Be upfront with the lab you choose regarding expectations (have a conversation about quality work and timing) • Talk to colleagues about their experiences with their labs, and ask them about the pros and cons of each lab • Have a good relationship with your lab tech - you can text them about shades, design, etc, and really customize the lab work for aesthetic cases 4. Don’t try to be a hero • Know your weaknesses and either improve on them or refer to specialists 5. Follow up with patients • Give them a call to ask them how they are doing after big procedures Even though we are in dental school and we may not have access to things like CAD/CAM dentistry in clinic, we can still apply some of these tips to our day-to-day patient care. We can call our patients, take CEs, learn about technology, and get to know the labs that we use. And of course, at dental school, it’s the best time to work on your weaknesses and get help from people around you.

BEST OF ADVOCACY DAY APHA prepared me for Lobby Day by not only challenging me to work with disinterested members of Congress, but allowing me to think outside the box in getting them to engage in an open dialogue. By engaging in open dialogue, we can get legislatures to see how the bills and values we are fighting for benefits all aspects of society, not just the ones that they belong and tend to adhere to. GAME ON WHEN LOBBY DAY COMES! Rhett Berg, Class of 2019 My favorite speaker of the day was Dr. Robert Hanlon. He covered a host of topics, ranging from a broad introduction to organized dentistry, to a specific discussion about the upcoming gubernatorial election (and the potential implications it could have on California dental legislature). It was exciting to see how current practicing dentists are advocating on the behalf of our profession. All in all, APHA was a great event and an exciting warm up for State and National Lobby Days!

Angela Chen, Class of 2020 We learned about issues in dentistry that ASDA is advocating. It was comforting to learn that these issues were aligned with my concerns as a future dentist. The breakout sessions from the workshop were helpful for learning to effectively communicate with representatives, which I think will also be helpful for the upcoming 2018 AADR/FNIDCR Advocacy Day on Capital Hill in Washington DC. PREDENTAL: DAY IN DENTISTRY

Over 60 pre-dental students attended UCSF ASDA's Day in Dentistry on November 4, 2017. This jam-packed day gave attendees a taste of what it's like to go to dental school, through a variety of presentations, tours, hands-on activities, and networking opportunities.

Representatives from the UCSF School of Dentistry Office of Admissions offered pre-dental students tips on how to become more competitive applicants to DDS/DMD programs. Dr. Jeffory Eaton, UCSF Community Dental Clinic's Faculty Director, motivated attendees to pursue their passions, while highlighting the school's focus on service and patient-centered care.

In the simulation lab, pre-dental students were able to practice waxing, drilling, and making alginate impressions.

They were also able to learn a bit about dental morphology, using the interactive 3D Tooth Atlas software. First-year dental students volunteered their waxing instruments, handpieces, burs, learn-a-preps, and typodonts to accommodate the large number of pre-dents at the event.

In the anatomy lab, attendees got the opportunity to touch and identify different organs.

First-year dental students gave brief overviews of the heart, the lungs, and the brain. For the majority of attendees, this was the first time they were able to touch any part of the human body.

Over 40 UCSF ASDA members volunteered to make the day possible. From sitting with pre-dents during lunch to giving presentations on the clubs they were involved in, these dental students tried to make the day as memorable and informative as possible.

Joshua Alvarez, who participated in UCSF's Day in Dentistry, said the day was "Easily the best day of my life. I went to UCSF for their day in dentistry and got to see the school and was able to go through the anatomy labs and the sim lab. I got to use a drill, take impressions on a fake tooth, and hold a human heart, lungs, and brain!! Yesterday just confirmed that I want to pursue dentistry and why I want to do it."

Overall, the day was a great success, and many pre-dental students felt that they benefited from the various presentations and events.

FALL OUTREACH

SAINT ANTHONY FOUNDATION DONATION DRIVE

In December 2017, UCSF ASDA hosted a one-day donation drive for the Saint Anthony Foundation. Since 1950, the Saint Anthony Foundation has been providing essential support to San Franciscans living in poverty. The UCSF dental community came

together to donate various goods to the shelter, including towels, clothes, tote bags, etc. One dental student even donated a plastic bin that held the donations.

The UCSF ASDA Community Service Co-Chairs had reached out to Crest Oral-B about their event and received positive feedback.

Upon request, Crest Oral-B donated 300 oral hygiene goodie bags, which included dental floss, a toothbrush, a regular size tube of tooth paste, and a sample size tube of tooth paste.

Through this donation drive, the UCSF dental community was able to kick off their holiday season in the spirit of giving back.

When the donations were driven to the Saint Anthony Foundation the day after fall quarter had ended, there were various homeless people that kindly asked if the drivers needed help unloading the donations. The security guard that ultimately took all of the donations thanked the student drivers tremendously for the donations and reminded the students of how much the shelter truly appreciates the donations.

Although the holiday season may have come to an end, the spirit of giving has always shone bright in UCSF students. If you are interested in donating to the Saint Anthony Foundation or any homeless shelter, they accept most donations, including food, clothing, unopened hygiene products, etc. Most dental students have dozens of unopened toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste from the various vendor fairs and events that UCSF hosts, such as the UCSF ASDA Expo Day. Lists of acceptable donations can be found on the shelters’ websites. If you would like to donate but are unable to transport your donations, you can reach out to the UCSF ASDA Community Service Co-Chairs.

UCSF ASDA AND UCSF CHILDREN'S HEALTH HUT On Saturday, November 11th, we partnered with UCSF’s Children’s Health Hut to provide free dental screenings, fluoride varnish treatment, and oral health instruction to Bay Area families at the 7th Annual Discovery Day at AT&T Park!

It was a big hit among all the families and we were able to screen around 70 children. It is always a blast to be able to collaborate and work alongside our other UCSF organizations and to be able to give back to our community.

LUNCH AND LEARN THE POWER OF ADVOCACY

Natasha Lee, president-elect of the California Dental Association (CDA), gave an inspiring talk on Nov. 9 on the power of advocacy and the importance of organized dentistry to UCSF students. Through advocacy, Lee mentioned, the CDA was able to get Delta Dental, the largest dental benefits carrier in the U.S., to pay providers 34.7 million dollars in a landmark settlement on inadequate reimbursement rates.

Lee, a graduate of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, defined advocacy as consisting of individuals or groups that push for something they care strongly about. In the context of organized dentistry, advocacy is for issues that benefit not only dentists, but also patients, who are often unable to speak for themselves. Lee explained that advocating for both dentists and patients, rather than for just dentists, allows state and national organizations to create a better image of the oftenmaligned dental profession. To get legislative action done, state and national organizations must make it clear that they have the common good in mind. In the words of Lee, "doing good for patients is doing good for us as well."

LUNCH AND LEARN: thE POWER OF ADVOCACYÂ Continued Dental students, Lee told the audience, are able to advocate for issues that they care about by participating in the ADA Dentist and Student Lobby Day. At this event, professionals and students join hands to speak with legislators in Washington D.C. on the present and the future of dentistry.

Lee mentioned that dental students do not have to travel to Washington D.C. though to effect change on the state or national level. Students can make a difference simply by spreading the word to their classmates about why it is important to contribute to organized dentistry. They can also sign up for ADA action alerts to keep themselves informed on critical issues.

While organized dentistry has successfully advocated on many fronts, there continue to be issues requiring advocacy by the dental community. Lee described some of these issues as safety and quality in dentistry, the cost of dental education, and the potential use of mid-level providers, professionals who are proposed to perform some of the same procedures that dentists currently perform after fewer years of training.

When asked what are her goals as president-elect of the CDA, Lee explained that the strategic plans of the organization include maintaining membership and specifically working on offering membership at a lower cost. Lee stated that the two biggest complaints that dentists have are regarding insurance issues and staff issues, such as the scarcity of dental assistants in expensive San Francisco. The CDA is able to play a role in finding solutions to these headaches.

According to Lee, there are four players in dentistry: patients, providers, payers, and policymakers. Thus, dentists have relationships with people other than those they treat. As members of the community who have the privilege of having their voices heard by a large audience, it is important for them to speak up. Advocacy by dental professionals can end up benefiting not only themselves, as in the CDA settlement with Delta Dental, but also the greater community, via the pursuit of a stronger national oral health system.

LUNCH AND LEARN HIGHLIGHT: MAXIMIZING YOUR LEARNING POTENTIAL

Nothing says welcome back to school like free food at lunch! ASDA made sure our new D1s never went hungry and hosted a record-breaking number of twelve Lunch and Learns during the fall quarter. Its safe to say that our members were not only well fed, but also learned invaluable knowledge that will continue to help them in their academic and professional careers!

One new lunch and learn series that was installed fall quarter aimed to help students figure out their own personal learning style and how to best manage their time for maximum efficiency. We were lucky to have UCSF learning specialist, Peggy Ryan, come to give a two-part lunch and learn on these topics. Her learning tools are specifically designed for high achieving and high functioning students and are aimed at exploiting how the brain learns to make your application of study strategies more effective. I have summarized her time management and study strategies below that stood out to me the most:

Time Management Tool: Use a 24 hour calendar a. Block out all NECESSARY/MANDATORY/COMMITTED chunks of time (i.e. sleeping, class, eating) on the calendar b. Fill in empty space on the calendar with your ideal study schedule (i.e. 3 hours of studying on Monday evening dedicated to BMS 116) c. After 1 week, assess whether or not you actually stuck to your schedule i. If you did… good for you! ii. If you did not… how did you use that time instead? Do you notice a pattern in your habits that makes you less efficient with your time? (i.e. Mondays are your longest most exhausting days and you can never bring yourself to study BMS 116 at night because all you want do is sleep) If so, maybe you should schedule studying BMS on a less exhausting day or at a different time in the day when you have more energy! d. Readjust your calendar after your self-assessment in step c. e. Voila! You just maximized your time! Good Job! Study Strategy: How to (actually) study efficiently in one hour 1) Choose a specific topic you want to study a. Do NOT just choose a broad topic like Oral Pathology. Be more FOCUSED i. ex: study only white lesions in the oral cavity that have malignant potential 2) Break the hour into time chunks a. ex: 20 min study, 5 min break, 20 min study, 15 min review i. you can play around with the timing until you find what works best for you! ii. *note* give yourself a break to refocus your studying!

D1 WINTER QUARTER SURVIVAL GUIDE

Advice for D1's for Winter quarter and beyond

By Albert Ngo (20') Wilson Ng (20') Sapna Saini (20') Academics: BMS 117: This course covers a myriad of bacterial and viral pathogens and can seem overwhelming. Therefore, you must get organized! You’ll be receiving drug charts from the pharmacy portion, but there is no “bug chart.” Those who are willing to sit down and sort the information in this way will clearly see the similarities and differences between the key characteristics of pathogens, which is essential for solving the case-based questions featured heavily on the exams.

Go to Microbio lab (don’t skip!) and take advantage of the TA’s. There are many case scenario style questions on the exam, so this is the best time to learn the material one on one.

Sim Lab: Waxing: Use a cotton roll for gross smoothing of your final wax-up. The corner of the cotton roll is great to run through the occlusal table. Then wrap your panty-hose around the cotton roll or your finger for that final polish and glossy shine!

Lost your brush? Use a toothbrush to brush off all those wax shavings!

Triangular ridges: use your fine/pointy waxing tip and poke the sides of your occlusal grooves to bring wax to the surface and make the triangular ridges more bulbous!

D1 SURVIVAL GUIDE CONTINUED Crown Preps: Keep and eye on your 016 bur and make sure that it is parallel to the long axis of the tooth!

Run your bur on lower speeds (100K rpm or 50K rpm) to smoothen out your prep or to make finer adjustments.

You can use burs with a flat edge (837-012 cylinder bur, 330D) on a lower speed or hand instruments (hatchet/hoe) to make your margins extra smooth or get rid of J margins!

Occlusal clearance: close your typodont and use your operative hatchet or crown and bridge condensers (smallest = 1.0 mm, largest = 2.0 mm) to check for adequate occlusal reduction between your prep and the opposing tooth Putty Matrix: Temps coming out high in occlusion? After you squirt in the ProTemp, place the putty on your prepped tooth and gently push down and hold it place until the temp has solidified (about 45 sec - 1 min).

After you remove the putty, immediately occlude your typodont while the temp is somewhat soft to avoid it being too high!

Finishing/Polishing Temps: Finishing - use your acrylic or diamond crown and bridge burs (like the 016) to carefully trim excess around your temp. Be careful at the margins!

Nicked your margin? Put a light coat of vaseline all over your prepped tooth, seat your temp, and spread flowable into your gaps! Use your XTS or plastic instruments to smooth the flowable and blend it into your temp. Light cure your temp to hold it all in place!

Polishing - Use the edge of the yellow wheel to remove gross scratches. Be gentle though, this wheel still cuts! Use flour of pumice in the wet lab for even more gross finishing and smoothing of your temp. Run your temp under the lab wheel and hold tight! Then rinse your temp and use fabulustre chalk on the lab wheel to make that temp shine!

Wet Lab full on test case day? Find the small, fuzzy white round wheel in your kits, attach it to your straight handpiece, rub some Fabuluster on the wheel, and shine up your temp from the convenience of your bench!

Operative/Class IIs: Use your explorer to poke through your facial margin. 0.5mm of the explorer tip should go through in order to have adequate space for the matrix band!

Afraid of nicking the adjacent tooth when making your box? Use a small wedge (orange) before starting your box form to give you some extra room when removing your marginal ridge. Just be sure to remove it when finalizing your box form to ensure you have adequate space!

Use your burs and hand instruments to measure the width/depth of your outline form! There are calipers in your crown and bridge cassette (orange) if you want to verify.

34D ~ 1 mm long 330D ~ 3 mm long (drill until about halfway to depth of this bur!); also good for smoothing pulpal floors and walls Extracurriculars/General Tips: Be more involved with clubs this quarter! By now you should have a better sense of time management and your own personal workflow, so now’s the time to start branching further! There are a lot more volunteer opportunities in the winter to be involved in: Give Kid’s A Smile Day (February 10th), SNDA Impressions Conference (February 11th), Community Dental Clinic (Wednesday nights), and much more!

Join club committees! Larger organizations (ADEA, ASDA, SNDA, etc.) have committees that you can help out with and be a part of. This would be especially important to be involved early when it comes time to applying for leadership positions in the Spring.

Participate more in fraternity events! Hang out with your big more and don’t be afraid to ask them for help!

Take advantage of ISO time to start assisting this quarter! The more you assist, the easier things will be when you transition into clinic AND to make sense of all the procedures you’re doing in sim lab.
