We love bringing you varied, balanced and great-value recipe ideas every issue. Here’s all the info you need…
All our recipes are specially created with you in mind. We work with our chefs, nutrition team and leading recipe developers to create meal ideas that are easy, affordable and nutritious. Plus, we test every recipe carefully so you can trust they’ll work for you and your family. Each issue, we promise to:
• Provide budget-friendly recipes to help you feed your family.
• Ensure that all our meals are nutritionally balanced, and use everyday ingredients.
• Help you to reduce your food waste by using ingredients smartly and providing leftovers ideas.
The eggs in our recipes are always medium-sized, unless otherwise stated.
Look out for the price per serve on selected recipes. It’s the total cost of a recipe’s ingredients divided by the total amount used per serve. Prices are correct at the time of the magazine going to print.
All our recipes include key facts on servings, prep time and our unique ‘faff factor’, a guide to how much skill and effort is involved in a recipe.
Serves 4 Typical serve size based on adult portions.
Exact cooking times to help you plan. Shows how easy or more involved a recipe is.
All our recipes are reviewed by a registered nutritionist and information is shown in a ‘traffic light’ label. Green is low, while red shows a high percentage of an adult’s recommended daily intake, and amber is somewhere in the middle. The recommended daily calorie intake is 2,000 for women and 2,500 for men. Our recipes should be enjoyed as part of a varied diet and active lifestyle.
We’ve included other handy hints throughout the magazine to highlight ingredients and recipes with special features

Curried egg-fried rice
Freezer and store-cupboard staples make whipping up this quick dinner a total breeze after a busy week.

With so many superstar seasonal ingredients on the shelves, adding healthy extras to your plate
has never been simpler
1
One more a day
If eating five helpings of fruit and veg a day feels tricky, take the pressure off by adding just one extra portion to your plate. Whether you top your morning yogurt with more fruit or chop one more pepper into your fajitas, every bit counts.
2 Taste the season
Produce is always more delicious when it ’s in season, and there’s so much to choose from at this time of year, from juicy berries to green leaves like lettuce and watercress. Try adding one or two to your dishes to bring more to the table.
3 Go 50/50
Substituting half your main protein for beans and lentils or veg can be a great way to add more variety to your diet. Have a go at making your Bolognese with half beef, half lentils to create a meal with added fibre that’s just as tasty.
4
Hit the sauce
Lots of shop-bought marinades and sauces contain high levels of sugar, so why not make your own instead? Stir a small amount of mint sauce into Greek yogurt for a cheat’s raita, or marinate your meat in olive oil, crushed garlic and dried herbs for food so flavoursome you won’t need to serve it with condiments!
5 Get more grains
Carbs are an essential part of a balanced diet, and choosing wholegrain versions means they’re working even harder for you. Switch out white bread, rice and pasta for the wholemeal equivalent. Or, if that’s too far, try our 50/50 trick on the left and see if anyone notices.
6 Grill those veggies
Just because barbecue season is in full swing, it doesn’t mean dinnertime needs to be wall-to-wall meat. Cook up tasty veggies on your

coals, including corn on the cob and jacket potatoes, or why not try the sweet potato steaks on p66?
7 B oost your protein
2025 is the comeback year for cottage cheese*. Its mild creaminess means it’s perfect for upping the protein in all sorts of recipes, from pasta sauces and delicious salad dressings to bread, smoothies and even pancakes. Try our blueberry snack cakes on p34 and see if anyone can guess their protein-boosting secret ingredient…
8 Make sat-fat switches
An easy switch to help reduce your saturated fat intake is to swap to lower fat dairy options. Try switching to lighter cheese, low-fat plain yogurt, and semi-skimmed milk. When cooking, try half-fat versions of sour cream or crème fraîche. Just add at the final stage so they don’t bubble and split.

3 Cover a baking tray that fits into your freezer with non-stick baking paper. You may need to use two. Using a dessertspoon, divide the mixture into 12–15 rounds on the baking paper. Use the back of the spoon to help shape the mixture into circles. Lightly press the end of a lolly stick into each round.
4 Cut the mango fingers into small bite-size pieces. Decorate the yogurt pops with the remaining raspberries and the pieces of mango.
5 Add the pops to the freezer and leave to set, uncovered, for at least 3 hrs. Once completely frozen cut around the baking paper each pop is sticking to and then stack them in an airtight container in the freezer.

• 240g Leap Wild Yellowfin
Tuna Steaks
• 2cm Asda Sweet & Warming Ginger, peeled and finely grated
• 2 tsp runny honey
• 1 tbsp + 1 tsp light soy sauce
• 1 tbsp Asda Sesame Oil
• 2 oranges
• 100g Asda Crisp & Nutty Sugar Snap Peas, trimmed and halved
• 1 egg white
• 1 tbsp sesame seeds
• 1 tbsp black sesame seeds
• 1 tsp vegetable oil
• 60g Asda Wild Rocket
1 Remove the tuna steaks from the fridge. To make the salad dressing, put the grated ginger, honey, 1 tbsp soy sauce and the sesame oil in a small bowl and whisk until combined.
2 To prepare the oranges, use a small, serrated knife to cut a thin slice from the top and base of each fruit, so they sit flat on a chopping board. Following the shape of the orange, remove all the peel and pith, strip by strip. Carefully cut between each segment of the first orange and discard the chewy membrane. Repeat for ½ of the second orange, then squeeze the juice from the remaining ½ into a salad bowl. Add the orange segments and sugar snap peas to the same bowl.
3 Pat the tuna steaks dry with kitchen towel. Lightly whisk the egg white and remaining soy sauce with a fork in a wide, shallow bowl. Dip the tuna steaks in, so they are coated all over.
Transfer to a plate and sprinkle over the sesame seeds to cover both sides.
4 Place a large, non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Add the vegetable oil, heat for a couple of mins then, for medium steaks, fry for 1½ mins each side. If your tuna steak is thicker than 2cm, it will need 30 secs longer per side. Remove steaks from the pan and set aside briefly to rest.
5 Add the rocket and dressing to the salad bowl and toss everything together. Cut the tuna into slices and serve with the salad.

• 75g Asda Buttermilk
• 150g caster sugar
• 2 large eggs
• 150g courgettes, finely grated
• 2 Asda Large Unwaxed Lemons
• 2 tbsp elderflower cordial
• 300g self raising flour
• 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
For the icing
• 100g icing sugar, sifted
• 4 tsp lemon juice
• 4 tsp elderflower cordial
1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4. Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin with baking paper. In a large bowl, whisk the oil, buttermilk, caster sugar and eggs. Put the grated courgette in the middle of a clean tea towel, gather the corners together and wring out as much liquid as you can. Add to the bowl with the zest of 1½ lemons, 1 tbsp lemon juice and 1 tbsp elderflower cordial. Mix again.
2 Fold the flour and bicarbonate of soda into the wet ingredients until well combined and no flour is visible. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf tin and bake in the oven for 55 mins, or until a skewer comes out clean. Keep an eye on it, and if the top of the cake
starts to darken too much, loosely cover it with foil.
3 As soon as the cake leaves the oven, pierce the top a few times with a skewer and drizzle over the remaining 1 tbsp elderflower cordial. Leave for 10 mins in the tin and then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
4 Make the icing by mixing together the icing sugar, lemon juice and elderflower cordial, until smooth. Spread the icing over the top of the cake, letting it drip down the edges slightly. Finely zest the remaining ½ of lemon and scatter over the icing to decorate. Leave the icing to set solid before slicing up and serving.

1 Pat the pork belly slices dry with kitchen paper, score the fat in a few places and rub salt into the skin. Mix the hoisin, soy sauce, lime juice and 5 spice, putting 1 tbsp aside for later. Rub the rest over the pork meat, avoiding the top fat layer.
2 Once the coals are white hot, use a barbecue tool to carefully move them to one side of the barbecue and put the rack at a medium height.
3 Place the belly slices on the grill on the opposite side to the coals. Cook for 20 mins, flipping every 5 mins to ensure an even crust, closing the lid between flips. After 20 mins, carefully move the pork over to the hotter side of the barbecue to caramelise, turning the pork regularly to prevent it burning. Remove, cover and rest for at

• ½ x 30g pack flat leaf parsley, stalks and leaves chopped
• ½ x 30g pack mint, leaves chopped
1 Boil the kettle. Add the couscous and raisins to a large lidded container. Cover with boiling water 2½cm above the top of the couscous, put the lid on and leave to expand for 10 mins.
2 Toast the almonds in a dry frying pan over a medium heat for 5 mins, shaking the pan regularly to prevent any burning. Set aside.
3 Add the chickpeas to a bowl with the oil, 1 tbsp Moroccan seasoning, 1 tbsp ground cumin and the grated garlic. Tip into a frying pan over a medium heat and fry gently for 5 mins. Zest and juice ½ the lemon then add to the pan, along with the roasted peppers. Sizzle everything for another 5 mins then turn off the heat.
4 Fluff the couscous and raisins with a fork then, while the grains are still warm, sprinkle in the remaining 1 tbsp
of Moroccan seasoning and cumin. Season to taste. Stir in the warm chickpea mixture then cover and leave overnight (or to cool).
5 To serve, stir most of the parsley and mint through the couscous and pile into a bowl. Scatter over the toasted almonds, the juice and zest of the remaining ½ lemon and remaining herbs.
Cook the whole 500g pack of couscous and store in the fridge for up to 3 days to make quick salads.

To simplify, swap the dried spices, herbs and garlic with 3 tbsp Cook by Asda Piri Piri Seasoning.
Want to serve up a dig-in dinner for the whole family? This supertasty self-assembly tea is one you’ll turn to time and time again.
Serves 4 |
2 out of 5 of your 5-a-day
• 650g pack Asda Succulent Boneless Chicken Thigh Fillets
• 1 tbsp paprika, plus extra to serve
• 2 tsp dried oregano, plus extra to serve
• 1 tsp chilli flakes (optional)
• 4 garlic cloves, crushed
• 1 tbsp tomato purée
• 1 tbsp brown sugar
• 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
• 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
• 1 tbsp Asda Medium Piri Piri Marinade, plus extra to serve (optional)
• 470g Asda Crispy Skin-On Fries
• 4 The Bakery at Asda White Wraps
• 2 medium-large tomatoes, roughly chopped
• ½ cucumber, halved lengthways and sliced
• 1 little gem lettuce, washed and roughly torn
1 Add the chicken thighs to your slow cooker, season well and add the paprika, oregano, chilli flakes (if using), garlic, tomato purée, sugar and oil, turning to coat evenly. Cover and
cook on high for 2–3 hrs or 6–7 hrs on low, stirring very occasionally, until the chicken is pull-apart tender.
2 Uncover, stir and cook on high for a further 1–2 hrs to reduce the cooking liquid and intensify the flavour. Shred the chicken with forks, stir through the vinegar and piri piri marinade and taste for seasoning.
3 To serve, cook the fries in an air fryer (or oven), according to pack instructions. Load up the shredded chicken into warmed wraps with the salad ingredients, drizzling each with a little extra piri piri marinade, if you like. Add the fries, sprinkle with a bit more paprika and oregano, wrap up and serve immediately.

‘This was a huge hit with the family. I put everything on the table – including some garlic mayo – and let everyone help themselves. They wolfed it down (including the salad!) and even asked for seconds.’
Don’t tell the kids, but this recipe has 4 of your 5 a day in 1 serving and it’s delicious (you can tell them that bit!)
HANDS ON 35 mins HANDS OFF 2–3 hrs
Serves 4 | GF
2 out of 5 of your 5-a-day
• 500g pack Asda Passata
• 4 garlic cloves, crushed
• 2 tbsp olive oil, plus optional to serve
• 190g Asda Green Pesto
• 4 medium-large red peppers, ideally with level bottoms
• 250g pack Asda Long Grain Micro Rice
• 400g tin Asda Cannellini Beans in Water, drained and rinsed
• 50g Just Essentials by Asda Hard Cheese, grated, plus extra to serve
• ¾ lemon, plus extra to serve (optional)
• handful of fresh basil leaves, to serve (optional)
• 100g bag Asda Strong & Crisp Italian Style Salad, to serve (optional)
1 Turn your slow cooker (3 litres minimum size) to high. Add the passata, garlic, 1 tbsp oil and around 1/3 of the pesto. Give it a quick stir and leave it to cook while you prepare the red peppers.
2 Cut the top off the peppers, remove the seeds and any pith from inside and discard along with the stem. Finely chop the remaining tops and add to a mixing bowl. Press the micro rice packet to loosen and then tip into the bowl with the cannellini beans, grated cheese, 1 tbsp olive oil and the juice from ½ the lemon. Reserve 2 tbsp pesto for serving, and add the rest to the bowl. Mix well.
3 Divide the rice mixture between the peppers,
carefully pressing firmly to pack them full – you should use it all with just a little bulging out of each (if your peppers are small and you have leftover filling, simply scatter over once they’re sat in the slow cooker). Add the peppers to the slow cooker pot, they should fit snugly; be careful as the pot will be hot. Cover and cook on high for best results, for 2–3 hrs (or 5–6 hrs on low), until they’re very tender and piping hot throughout.
4 Before serving, mix the reserved pesto with 1 tbsp water and the juice from the remaining ¼ lemon, to a drizzly consistency.
5 Using two wooden spoons, transfer each pepper to a plate (or platter) and spoon around the tomato sauce. Scatter over more grated cheese and basil leaves, if using, then drizzle over the saucy pesto. If you like, serve with salad leaves, loosely dressed with a little more oil and lemon juice.
‘These were delicious and my kids loved them! The pesto passata is a genius idea and the freshness of the lemon makes the dish feel summery. I always have a jar of pesto in, so I’ll be making these again.’
Swap the pesto for Free From or Extra Special Basil Pesto –both are suitable for vegetarians.
A hearty dinner with holiday flavours, simply swap aubergine for peppers if it’s not your favourite vegetable.
HANDS ON 40 mins HANDS OFF 7–10 hrs
Serves 4 | GF EF FAFF FACTOR
2 out of 5 of your 5-a-day
• 1 large aubergine (about 350g), cut into 2–3cm chunks
• 2 x 300g packs Asda Tender Diced Lamb
• 1 large brown onion, finely chopped
• 8 garlic cloves, crushed
• 1 tsp ground cinnamon
• 2 tsp dried oregano
• 500g pack Asda Extra Special British Baby Potatoes, halved if larger
• 400g tin Asda Chopped Tomatoes
• 2 tbsp tomato purée
• 2 lemons; 1 juiced, plus an extra ½ juiced
• 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
• ½ cucumber, washed and coarsely grated
‘ We love Greek flavours in our family, so this was a hit – and I know the grandparents would love this one too. It ’s so great to put everything in one pot and get back outside knowing dinner ’s sorted for tonight! ’
• 100g Asda 40% Less Fat Salad Cheese, finely crumbled
• 150g Asda Fat Free Greek Style Yogurt
• 25g pack Asda Mild & Peppery Flat Leaf Parsley, roughly chopped
1 Season the aubergine and lamb chunks well and add to your slow cooker (it should be at least 3.5 litres in size). Top with the onion, 6 crushed garlic cloves, cinnamon, oregano, potatoes, chopped tomatoes, tomato purée, the juice of 1 lemon and 2 tbsp oil. Rinse the chopped tomato tin, half-filling with water and add this too.
2 Cover and cook on low for 6–8 hrs (or 3–5 hrs on high) stirring occasionally, until the lamb is pull-apart tender. Uncover, stir and cook on high for another 1–2 hrs to reduce and thicken the summer stew and intensify the flavour.
3 As the lamb cooks, make the cheese tzatziki. Mix the cucumber with a pinch of salt and let it drain in a sieve over a bowl for at least 10 mins. Squeeze the moisture out of the cucumber and then mix in a bowl with the crumbled cheese, remaining oil and garlic, juice from the ½ lemon, Greek yogurt and ½ the parsley.
4 Taste and season the lamb then stir through most of the remaining parsley. Slice the remaining ½ lemon into wedges and serve with the lamb topped with the cheese tzatziki and the reserved chopped parsley.

Clive Donaldson, our resident wine expert, lifts the lid on the best blush-coloured wines to chill in your fridge this summer
PHOTOGRAPH STEVE SAYERS
Sun-drenched days and the promise of warmth? That’s our cue for rosé. With its pretty pink hues and refreshing flavours, no glass of wine sparks more joy during the summer. Rosé gets its lovely pink tinge from red grapes. When the dark skins touch the juice just enough to tint it, winemakers halt the process before pressing the grapes. Crisp and dry, or sweet and fruity, rosé offers fuller flavours with more clout than white wine, but without the heaviness of a red.
The delicate, pale pink wines of Provence have become hugely popular in the UK, and they typically command a more premium price due to lower grape yields and precise winemaking techniques.
Luxury labels like Whispering Angel have become firm favourites, but in recent years other producers have come into their own, like those in Corsica whose wines mimic the Provençal style but add the region’s own grapes for an extra dash of the Med.
Some rosés are sweeter, like California’s vibrant white zinfandel and white grenache; others more subtle and fresh, like an Italian pinot grigio. How to choose? You can’t really go wrong. If you like a sweeter style or you’re having spicy food, a white zin or a white grenache is a good choice. If you want a great-value, uncomplicated, and fruity rosé, then pinot grigio blush is for you. Or, if you want to treat yourself, look to Provence, Corsica or Sancerre.
Fillipo Sansovino Pinot Grigio Rosé, £5.52/75cl
This copper-tinged rosé is a great-value Italian classic. It has a subtle sweetness balanced with fruity apple and peach flavours that means it’s lovely on its own or a match for a summer salad.
The Wine Atlas Île-de-Beauté Rosé, £6.97/75cl
The vineyards in Corsica enjoy hours of sunshine which help create this dry, delicate rosé. This strawberry-kissed wine is filled with red cherry aromas and a zesty pink grapefruit finish.
Asda Extra Special Côtes de Provence Notre-Dame des Anges, £10.47/75cl
From an exciting new sub region in Provence, this fabulous French wine is oh-so elegant, with floral aromas that combine with red berries to give a richer, rounder flavour.

Asda’s partnership with Trussell helps deliver donations to food banks all year round, a lifeline for people in our communities who need it most. In 2024, we donated the equivalent of 1.9 million meals to UK food banks thanks to our generous customers. From 13–15 June, you can join our national food drive. Adding just one extra item – tins, pasta, UHT milk – to our in store donation trolleys will make a real difference.

The mini donut nests from the Spring 2025 issue of Asda Magazine were a treat to make and eat. We bought two packs of donuts, which makes 18 in total, so we could share them with our family and have a couple ourselves. We used cooking chocolate (milk and white) and sprinkles (rainbow and chocolate) before we added the final touch: the mini chocolate eggs. It was so much fun! Amelie, aged 10 and Isabella, aged 8
This saucy tomato pasta with crispy salami [Spring 2025] is so good and easy to make. I didn’t even have to ask mum anything! I can’t wait to try more Asda Magazine recipes. Emily, aged 15
I came across this product by accident. Friends of ours make their own Seville marmalade, but we ran out and needed an alternative. Asda Spicy Ginger Preserve (£1.30/454g) is great – it’s so versatile. I have it on my husband’s homemade bread, use it as a marinade, add to stir-fries or cakes (it’s yummy in chocolate brownie batter). I just love it. Christine, via email

What a cosy and heartwarming dish [right] from your March/April 2024 magazine! It was quick and affordable on a student budget too. This dish reminded me of my mum’s cooking – it was so flavourful, which surprised me as it was so easy to make. You can alter the amount of the turmeric and number of eggs to suit how many are eating. I can’t wait to try more of your recipes. Kathryn, via email

I was asked to bring something pastry-based to a picnic for my friend’s birthday (a daunting prospect for a baking newbie). I tried your brie and onion upside-down tarts, which – to my relief – were so easy to make, and cheap too. The flaky pastry with the creamy cheese and sharp onion was heavenly. Thank you for helping me look good in front of my friends with this recipe! Josh, Llandrindod Wells
We’re so impressed with your first attempt at baking, Josh. You can even experiment with different veg, sliced meat and cheeses for this recipe. If you fancy expanding your pastry skills and trying another picnic-friendly treat, you could give our ham and cheese turnovers on p46 a go.

Whether you’re venturing abroad or prepping a trip a little closer to home, our handy hacks could make all the difference to your summer plans
Add labels to anything precious, marking them with your surname and phone number in case they get lost. This includes irreplaceable teddies, beloved soothers, and favourite items of clothing. 2
Whether you ’ re travelling by car, bus, train or plane, keeping a small first-aid kit close by could come in handy. A little pack of plasters, antiseptic wipes, liquid paracetamol sachets and a small thermometer can make all the difference between a smooth journey and a stressful one. Just leave it to Nurse Peppa…
1. Plan together
Surprises are fun but mapping out your holiday as a family means younger ones will be so much more invested if they’ve had their say.
If your journey involves a long car ride, think about how you can plan it around sleep patterns for younger children, perhaps setting off near naptime, or mealtimes for older kids, so you can break the journey for a bite to eat.
Early start? Plate up a tasty treat for brekkie so you don’t have to worry about empty tummies during travel. A flaky, golden croissant will hit the spot every time.
Pack all the family favourites and then, when you think you can’t fit in any more, keep going! They’ll get you through any drama on your journey and anything left over can be used up during your stay or
Travelling overseas with a little one that’s not potty trained? Make sure you stock up on nappies before you head off on your travels. Nappies can be expensive in airports and resort convenience stores, so save yourself some pennies.
If you’re off on a self-catering break in the UK, arrange an Asda Groceries delivery * for after your expected arrival. That way, everything you need comes straight to you without any faff. Be sure to add something nice for the adults to get the holiday off to a lovely start.
Story Pirates and Smash Boom Best are two great podcasts the whole family will enjoy. Download the series before you set off. Load their fave TV shows or films on to a tablet to keep the mood sweet. And make sure devices are fully charged!

Leave room in your suitcase and backpacks for a few travel games so there’s always something for the kids to do – they’re surprisingly fun. Trying to reduce your load? Keep a list of kit-free games on your phone for emergencies. I Spy; Red Light, Green Light; and I Went to the Shop and Bought… could all come to your rescue along the way.
Take extra entertainment that you can save for emergencies, so there’s a novelty factor to what you’re offering.
School-age children are usually used to carrying a bag most days, so why should holidays be any different? Pack a little backpack stuffed with all the must-haves for the trip – games, books, snacks, toys etc. Then they ’ll have all their favourite things within easy reach.
Kids’ Printed Backpack, £8.50
Children are more prone to dehydration and overheating when it’s warm. Pack reusable water bottles and consider portable fans. Dressing the kids in light, breathable clothing is key, and remember to include extra layers for the aeroplane where it’s often chillier.
Give the older kids a notebook so they can keep a diary to record their holiday in words and doodles or try scrapbooking by collecting postcards and tickets from their hols and gluing them in. Or buy a disposable camera so they can snap their own photos of memorable moments.
GRAB THE ESSENTIALS From suitcases to sun cream, head in store or online to stock up.
There might be hiccups – delayed flights, traffic jams, WiFi falls off a cliff – so do what you can to prepare for them. Remember those precious memories will far outweigh the trickier moments.

Thanks to our generous Asda customers, we’re spreading the joy of reading far and wide with our partnership with the Children’s Book Project
WORDS LOUISA STREETING
Acaptivating bedtime story can unlock worlds of wonder for our little ones, igniting imaginations and setting dreams soaring – and a shelf brimming with books means every night can be a new adventure. One moment, you’re a fearless deep-sea explorer; the next, a powerful wizard or perhaps befriending a gentle giant.
In the UK, not every family is fortunate enough to have access to books at home. It’s reported that one in eight children from lower-income families in the UK do not have a book of their own*. Beyond boosting reading skills, owning books – especially stories that truly speak to the child –can nurture confidence and a love of learning the whole family can share**.
That’s why Asda has teamed up with the Children’s Book Project, a charity seeking to tackle book poverty by giving every youngster the opportunity to own their own book. The Children’s Book Project
collects donations of good-asnew books and gifts them to families who have very few or no books at home, hosting events for children to choose a story that resonates with them. So far, more than 100,000 books have been collected since the partnership with Asda launched in September 2024, enough to give every child in 50+ primary schools at least two books. How ace is
It was all smiles at Hugh Gaitskell Primary in South Leeds when Asda and the Children’s Book Project threw a surprise storytelling party ahead of World Book Day. The school’s hall became a swashbuckling pirate’s cove with games, face painting, dressup and storytelling sessions bringing the books to life.
‘The excitement and joy on our children’s faces as they
‘All children should be able to access a book without the cost being a barrier’
entered the transformed school hall were heartwarming,’ recalls Kate McNulty, headteacher at Hugh Gaitskell Primary. ‘It was so special seeing our children select and take home beautiful books they could keep. This generous gesture will undoubtedly help nurture their enthusiasm for reading and also encourage a lifelong love of books.’
More than 550 children chose a donated book to take home from the
event, supported by Asda Middleton Community Champion Sarah Robbin. ‘All children should be able to access a book without the cost being a barrier,’ explains Sarah. ‘Now is a great time for families to have a bit of a clear out and donate any books their children may have grown out of which will then benefit many other children in their area.’ That’s why Asda has rallied almost 400 stores nationwide to encourage its customers to get involved to help tackle book poverty and share the joy of reading.
If you’ve got a stack of pre-loved children’s books in good nick and want to give them to a new home, donate them at your nearest Asda drop-off point. Just look out for the dedicated donation trolley in your local store near the Customer Service desk and the Children’s Book Project will gift them to schools and community groups. We shine a light on a group in Cornwall that ’s on a mission to inspire young people and their families through nature-based learning and play – all with the support of the Asda Foundation
WORDS LOUISA STREETING
Meet Emma
St Austell’s Asda Community Champion, a familiar face with 18 years at Asda and six in this community role.
Meet Charlotte
A youth worker of 15 years who founded To The Woods CIC in 2021 and is passionate about the power of outdoor play.
Across the UK, Asda Community and Customer Champions are dedicated to empowering local projects that make a real difference. In Par, our St Austell store proudly supports To The Woods CIC*, a group providing a safe and nurturing space for children to connect with nature. We look at how a 2021 Asda Foundation grant of £835 enabled them to significantly enhance their outdoor space with a pizza oven, wooden benches and essential tools.
Charlotte: After 15 years, I’ve seen how being outdoors in nature really helps young people, especially after Covid, which is where the idea of To The Woods CIC was born.
Emma: When I took my two daughters to your parent and toddler group, Little Acorns, I saw the benefit of being outside and watched their confidence grow.
C: I spent quite a lot of time with your youngest. I have fond memories of her sitting in a giant puddle for an hour and a half, living her best life.
E: That sounds about right!
C: The benefit of outdoor play is massive for both children and adults.
E: And you work with children with varying needs, some of whom struggle to work in a typical school classroom setting, but when they’re out in nature with you, they thrive.
C: We do all sorts to get them engaged – planting in the spring, jam-making in summer, pumpkin decorating in autumn – it’s all about instilling a knowledge about the seasons from a very young age, which we can become disconnected from in modern life.
E: It’s been wonderful to support you and I was delighted that you received Asda Foundation funding.
C: The new pizza oven has been fantastic. The children learn to make dough from scratch, choose their toppings, and watch it cook. The pizza oven and new benches have become an integral part of the space for us all.
E: Plus, the benches provide an area for adults to sit and chat, and it can be tricky to find time for that as a parent.
C: Taking that time to sit, chat and eat with each other is so important; not every child has that at home. Through the council s holiday club programme, Time2Move, we can offer a space for children from lowerincome households to be active and have a hot meal to tackle food poverty. You’ve been so kind to donate food and your own time to these sessions.
E: Asda offers many great resources, too, like colouring pages from Pudsey Club or storytelling tips with BBC Tiny Happy People to give parents different ideas to engage with stories at home. The books come alive when we’re having storytime in the woods as you can point to plants and wildlife.
C: It’s valuable to be able to sit and listen to a story after lots of playtime. Books aren’t just for bedtime.
E: It never feels like I’m working while I’m running around the woods with the kids. You can be having the worst week ever, but as soon as you step onto the site, all those feelings go to the back of your mind.
C: It’s a real joy to watch you help out at the holiday clubs, whether you’re reading to the kids, cooking a meal
‘I saw the benefit of being outside the classroom and watched their confidence grow’
on the fire, or sitting under a teepee doing crafts. You’re always up for anything – and in all weathers, too.
E: [Laughs] And you know I’m not a crafty person. I’ll always be around to help get stuck in at the parent and toddler group, with the cooking, or bring seeds to plant with the kids.
C: You’ve been with To The Woods CIC since the very beginning.
E: Before I started this role at Asda, I didn’t realise how much good was in our community. I’ve met so many people, and I can now signpost them to other groups in and around St Austell depending on their needs.
C: It’s nice having a relationship with someone who gets what you’re
doing. I just love how being outside can open up the kids’ worlds.
E: You’ve built such an incredible space that’s so welcoming.
C: Thank you to both Asda and the Asda Foundation for all the support. Asda helps me feel part of an incredible community.

Social media sensation, Poppy O’Toole (@poppycooks), aka the Potato Queen, talks all things spuds and her ultimate cooking tips
WORDS LOUISA STREETING
When did your love of spuds first begin?
Honestly, who doesn’t love potatoes? They’ve always been in my life, but when I worked in kitchens, I was often put on potato duty – peeling then making the dauphinois, fondants or chips – so that’s when I started to build a repertoire of recipes. The first potato video I ever posted, the crispy cubed potato back in 2020 during lockdown, was my first video to go viral with over one million views. Then, the next one did well, too, so I stuck with it. It was meant to be.
If you could only eat one potato dish forever…
Oh, that is a hard question! If I go out to a restaurant, I will always order a side of chips or fries, even if I’m having bangers and mash. So, I think, in reality, it would probably be chips, but roast potatoes are a close second.
Best potato recipe to take to a summer barbecue?
It’s got to be a potato salad. If it’s banging, it will always be the first thing to go at a barbecue. I love a classic one, but I like to make my green goddess version with a herby dressing, toasted pine nuts and salty anchovies. It’s one of my favourite recipes from my latest cookbook, The Potato Book – vibrant, zesty and tasty.
Most valuable thing you learnt in kitchens?
Seasoning is so important, especially when it comes to potatoes. Salting the pan of water enhances their flavour, which works the same for cooking rice or pasta. It ’s one of those skills you can’t be taught necessarily; you just have to constantly taste and practise to work it out for yourself.
What’s it like presenting live on Saturday Kitchen? I love it! It ’s like being back in the high-pressure environment of a restaurant where you have to problem-solve quickly. There’ve been a couple of times when I’ve said the wrong ad-lib, but I always roll with it.
Fave quick-fix meal?
My not-even-thinking-about-it dish is this weird fridge-raid stir-fry. There are no rules, so you can’t go wrong. It’s always got a base of soy sauce, ketchup, honey, Shaoxing wine, vinegar, and maybe a little bit of sugar, then I add some rice and anything I can dig out from the fridge like veggies or fish. Just 20 minutes in all.
What do you do in your down time?
I’m a dog mum to two, so my partner, Tom, and I love taking
them out for walks. I’ve tried doing the gym, I hate it every time I go, but I recently went to a golf driving range. I can totally see how that’s a hobby people have. It ’s great being outside, and you don’t have to do much!
Highlights of 2025 so far?
Definitely releasing The Potato Book, which has been a long time coming. I’ve recently been in the US and Canada promoting it, which has been wild. It’s been so warmly received; I’m so happy that people love it.
If you were a pudding... I’d be mint choc chip ice-cream, scoopable with a fresh flavour.
Scrambled, fried or poached? Fried is my favourite, crispy on the outside and over-easy.
What’s always in your basket?
Potatoes! I’m a Maris Piper girl but I love whatever’s in season.
Favourite cooking hack?
The microwave is my best friend, great for making sweet potato mash or steamed veg.
Go-to comfort meal?
Tinned mackerel in a spicy tomato sauce on toast, with salt, pepper and loads of butter.
