PANGOLIN

Pangolins are covered head-to-toe in scales. They live in Asia and Africa. When they sense danger, they curl into a tight ball to protect themselves. They eat insects, which they pick up with their long, sticky tongue. Pangolin meat is so popular in some places that they are on the brink of extinction. But there is still hope for pangolins. Hunting and selling them is now illegal in most countries.
The glaucous atlanticus, or blue sea dragon, is actually a tiny sea snail. They cannot swim, but swallow air and store it in their stomachs. This makes them float upside down in the sea. The wind and waves carry them around. Blue sea dragons live in all the great oceans in the world. They feed on a very poisonous jellyfish, and store some of the poison in their “fingers”. Even though they are only three centimeters long, blue sea dragons are actually quite deadly. So if you ever see one, do not pick it up!
Is it a bird? Is it a mouse? Perhaps it’s a tiny kangaroo? No, it is a jerboa! Jerboas live in desert areas in Asia and Africa. Jerboas are great at jumping and bouncing around on their long back legs. Like kangaroos, they use their tails to balance when hopping. Jerboas are active at night. They use their big ears to find insects in the dark. Jerboas belong to the rodent family, along with mice, rats and rabbits.

The others try to guess what animal it is, but can only ask questions that can be answered with “yes” or “no”. For instance: Does it have feathers? Does it live in the sea? Is it a wild animal? Is it a pet? Is it a farm animal? Does it have a beak?
The first person to guess the right animal gets a point. Take turns.

Laika the Space Dog Laika was a stray dog living on the streets of Moscow. Scientists found her and trained her to travel into space. The original plan was that Laika would orbit the Earth and return home safely. But the mission was rushed. Russia wanted to be the first country to send a living creature into space, but they did not have time to make a spaceship that could return to Earth. Laika would have to die in space.
The spaceship, Sputnik II, was about as big as a washing machine. Laika could sit up or lie down, but not move around. Many people were against the mission, but on November 3, 1957, Sputnik II took off. The plan was that after a few days in space, Laika would be fed poisoned food that would make her fall asleep and die. Sadly, she died after just a few hours. The journey made Laika famous and gave scientists important information about how a living creature reacts to spaceflight.

More than 200 000 pigeons delivered messages during the war. Near the end of the war, a group of 194 American soldiers was surrounded by the enemy. They had no food or ammunition. They sent out pigeons asking for help. The enemy knew that the pigeons carried important messages. They shot down the first two pigeons. The third time the troops sent out a pigeon called Cher Ami. Jumbo the Elephant As a young elephant, Jumbo was captured in Africa after hunters had killed his mother. They took the baby elephant and sold him in Europe. Jumbo grew up in zoos, first in Paris and later in London. Children loved him. He became a superstar.
A farewell ride on Jumbo at the VurderingseksemplarLondon Zoo.

Later, he was sold to an American circus and had to leave the zoo. 100 000 children wrote protest letters to Queen Victoria of England. They wanted to keep him in London Zoo. But Jumbo travelled to New York with the circus, where 10 000 people came to see his show. The circus said that Jumbo was “the biggest elephant on Earth”. This was probably not true, but he was the first African elephant people in North America had seen. For three years, Jumbo travelled with the circus all over North America, by train. Unfortunately, in 1885, a train hit Jumbo, and he died in the accident.
