Beyoncé Giselle Knowles and her sister Solange grew up in Houston, Texas. As a child she won many talent competitions because of her dancing and singing skills. Beyoncé, her cousin Kelly Rowland and two friends were at school when they started their band. They called it Destiny’s Child. They signed a contract with Columbia Records. They had many hits and were extremely popular. Destiny’s Child broke up in 2005 and Beyoncé became a solo artist. Beyoncé has also acted in some films. In 2008 Beyoncé married Jay-Z, a famous rapper. They have two daughters, Blue Ivy and Rumi and a son called Sir. In January 2013 Beyoncé sang the national anthem, The StarSpangled Banner at President Barack Obama’s re-election ceremony. She is one of the best-selling artists of all time. Beyoncé is the most nominated woman for the Grammy Award. In 2014 she was listed in a Time Magazine article of the 100 most important people in the world. Many people see her as a role model for women.
