OUR LEADERSHIP

Whata year! As we reflect on 2024, we are filled with gratitude for the unwavering support of our community, members, donors and volunteers. Your dedication has been instrumental in advancing our mission to connect people to nature.

This year, we celebrated significant milestones that enhance the Greenway experience for all. During our annual Earth Day Celebration, we proudly unveiled three new amenities: the Mountain Bike Skills Park, the Crandall Bowles Children’s Farm and the Schroering Forest Playground.

The Mountain Bike Skills Park offers riders of all levels a dynamic space to develop their skills. The Crandall Bowles Children’s Farm combines an opportunity to engage with domesticated farm animals, with educational gardens and observation areas, providing hands-on learning about sustainable farming and animal habitats. The Schroering Forest Playground invites children to connect with nature through imaginative play in a forest setting. Something we have lost as a society.

In our commitment to sustainability and connectivity, we also began constructing two steel truss bridges over Steele Creek. These bridges will enhance access across the Greenway for hikers, bikers and equestrians.

None of this would be possible without the passion and dedication of our incredible staff and volunteers. Their tireless efforts—from maintaining trails to leading programs and caring for our animals—are the foundation of all we do. We are profoundly grateful for their contributions.

As celebrate our 30th anniversary, we are excited about new opportunities to further our mission. Thank you for your continued support in preserving this wild space for generations to come.

Reflecting on the past year at the Anne Springs Close Greenway, I am filled with profound gratitude for our vibrant community of members, dedicated staff, committed board members and steadfast group of donors. Your unwavering support has been the cornerstone of our shared success.

In 2024, we celebrated significant milestones that have enriched our connection to nature and each other. Our educational programs flourished, introducing more young minds to the wonders of the outdoors. The expansion of the Forest Playground, Mountain Bike Skills Park and Children’s Farm provided new avenues for exploration and education. Our conservation initiatives ensured the protection of vital habitats within our 2,100-acre preserve. These achievements are a testament to our collective dedication to the Greenway’s mission.

As we honor these accomplishments, we remain steadfast in our commitment to preserving the natural beauty entrusted to us. Our mission guides every endeavor, from maintaining the integrity of our landscapes to educating the next generation about the importance of environmental stewardship.

Looking ahead, we are excited to embark on the next phase of our journey. Building upon the vision laid by our founder, Anne Springs Close, we are updating our strategic plan to navigate the challenges and opportunities before us. This process is designed to welcome all voices from our community, ensuring that our path forward reflects the collective wisdom and aspirations of all who cherish the Greenway.

Balancing the growth of our community with our commitment to our founder’s vision will require innovative solutions grounded in collaboration. As the surrounding areas continue to develop, we must be vigilant in preserving the sanctuary that the Greenway provides. This balance requires thoughtful planning and the active participation of our entire community. Together, we will continue to honor the legacy of Anne Springs Close by nurturing a space where people and nature coexist harmoniously.

RESTORING CONNECTIONS:

NEW BRIDGES PLANNED

In February 2024, the collapse of the Steele Street road bridge along Springfield Parkway— following a series of heavy rains—marked a significant moment in the history of the Anne Springs Close Greenway. This abandoned DOTowned highway had been a crucial component of the Greenway trail system since its opening in 1995. To restore access and improve sustainability, the Greenway is undertaking an ambitious project to build two new pedestrian bridges over Steele Creek: one replacing the road bridge and the other replacing the aging swinging bridge near the Field Trial Barn.

These new steel truss bridges, selected for their resilience and minimal environmental impact, will reconnect the Adventure Road and Blue Star entrances, enhancing access for hikers, dog walkers and mountain bikers and restoring connectivity to 200 acres of Greenway property currently impacted by a necessary trail reroute. Elevated above the

100-year floodplain to withstand future storm events, the bridges are designed to support low-impact recreation while aligning with the Greenway’s conservation mission.

Surveying and technical planning were completed in summer 2024. This $1.77 million investment, funded through a combination of Greenway endowment support and community contributions, reflects a long-term commitment to sustaining the Greenway’s trail system. Once completed in summer 2025, the updated trails and bridges will ensure a durable and connected network for generations to come, embodying the thoughtful stewardship at the heart of the Greenway’s mission.

STORMWATER SURGE & IMPERVIOUS SURFACES

A critical aspect of the Greenway’s conservation efforts includes protecting the Steele Creek watershed, through managing stormwater surge and reducing the impact of impervious surfaces within and around its 2,100 acres. The Greenway encompasses the final stretch of Steele Creek before it merges into Sugar Creek and, shortly after, the Catawba River. As stewards of these critical waterways, the Greenway works to mitigate the downstream impacts of development while advocating for responsible land management upstream.

Stormwater surge, driven by increased development and more frequent heavy rainfall events, presents significant challenges to the Greenway’s delicate ecosystems. As more impervious surfaces—such as roads, parking lots and rooftops—prevent water from naturally soaking into the ground, excessive runoff flows directly into Steele Creek. This

accelerated flow leads to erosion, sediment buildup and degraded water quality.

Historically, floodplains acted as natural relief valves, allowing creeks to overflow their banks and disperse excess water; however, in many areas, Steele Creek no longer functions as it should. The channel has eroded so deeply that it only spills its banks during extreme storm events. In areas like the “bottoms” near Wagon Loop, which should flood periodically, artificial containment prevents natural overflow. This disruption increases the velocity of water rushing through the creek, carrying debris that widens the channel and puts stress on infrastructure, such as bridges and trails.

To restore balance, the Greenway is prioritizing streambank stabilization and floodplain restoration. This involves sloping creek banks to allow water to escape more easily during smaller storms, reducing erosion and slowing the force of rushing water. Reintroducing native vegetation along the banks will further stabilize soil, filter pollutants and create vital habitat for wildlife.

By allowing Steele Creek to function as nature

intended, these conservation initiatives protect biodiversity, improve water quality, and ensures long-term resilience. However, true conservation takes time. The full impact of these efforts will unfold over years, reflecting the Greenway’s approach to land management—long-term, thoughtful stewardship, by proactively addressing stormwater surge and impervious surfaces.

PRESERVING BIODIVERSITY:

SCHWEINITZ’S SUNFLOWERS

Preserving the Schweinitz’s sunflower (Helianthus schweinitzii) is vital to protecting the biodiversity of the Piedmont prairie, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the Southeast. As an endemic species found only in this region, its survival is key to maintaining the delicate balance of native plant and pollinator communities. Conservation efforts ensure that this rare sunflower continues to thrive, supporting habitat restoration, pollinator health and the rich ecological heritage of the Piedmont landscape.

Following the 2024 census, the total count of Schweinitz’s at the Greenway was 808, an increase of almost 300 plants over 2023’s count.

Three New Amenities

SAME GREAT GREENWAY

In 2024, the Anne Springs Close Greenway proudly introduced three new member amenities that align with the Greenway’s mission to provide meaningful connections to nature through conservation-focused, low-impact recreation. Each new offering enhances the visitor experience while preserving the Greenway’s rich heritage and natural beauty, creating vibrant spaces for exploration, education and adventure.

FOREST PLAYGROUND

On March 30, the Anne Springs Close Greenway celebrated the grand opening of the Schroering Forest Playground during its Spring Kick-Off weekend. Nestled behind the Greenway Gateway at the Lake Haigler Entrance, this innovative natural play space was designed in partnership with the Natural Learning Initiative at NC State University and made possible through the generous support of Marty and Vesime Schroering and other private donors. Crafted to reconnect children with nature, the Forest Playground offers a mix of sensory experiences, creativity and problem-solving opportunities, and has already drawn thousands of children and increased visitation to the Lake Haigler Entrance by 15% over the previous year.

Open daily, the Schroering Forest Playground reflects the Greenway’s three-decade commitment to fostering outdoor recreation for all ages. Through this unique amenity, the Greenway continues to provide meaningful connections to nature while nurturing creativity, confidence and physical activity for its visitors.

CHILDREN’S FARM

As part of its annual Earth Day Celebration, the Anne Springs Close Greenway proudly unveiled the Crandall Bowles Children’s Farm at the Farm & Stables Entrance. This flagship destination integrates education and exploration, welcoming visitors of all ages to engage with the natural world.

The farm expands upon the Greenway’s former petting zoo, adding a pastoral habitat, half-mile loop trail, gathering lawn, educational garden and open-air learning pavilion. Observation areas highlight a variety of animals, including alpacas, cattle, goats, horses, rabbits and other barnyard favorites. With scheduled interpretive programs and demonstrations, the Children’s Farm creates an immersive learning environment tailored to inspire curiosity and hands-on discovery.

In 2024, the Greenway welcomed over 5,700 students for field trips and outdoor education programs, providing hands-on, curriculum-aligned experiences for elementary grade levels. The addition of the Children’s Farm amplified these offerings, enhancing opportunities for students and educators through engaging activities that combine education, agriculture and a deeper connection to nature.

MTB SKILLS PARK

The opening of the Mountain Bike Skills Park in Spring 2024 marked a major milestone for the Greenway, reinforcing its commitment to delivering unique and immersive outdoor recreation experiences. This state-of-theart facility features an array of trails and obstacles designed in collaboration with Community Trail Design and Black Diamond Trail Designs that cater to riders of all abilities seeking to refine their skills. With beginner-friendly flow lines alongside advanced obstacles, the park ensures accessibility for new cyclists while challenging seasoned riders.

The Colonel’s Club, the Greenway’s men’s philanthropic and social group, played a pivotal role in funding the $180,000 project through proceeds from their annual Boil & Brew event.

With over 11,000 mountain biking enthusiasts visiting the Greenway in 2024, the Skills Park is set to elevate the Greenway’s reputation as a premier destination for mountain biking. By blending recreation with challenge and accessibility, this addition enriches the Greenway’s offerings and solidifies its position as a vibrant hub for outdoor recreation.

For three decades, the Friends of the Greenway have exemplified a steadfast commitment to the mission of the Anne Springs Close Greenway—connecting people to nature while preserving and protecting its invaluable resources for generations to come.

Founded the year before the Greenway’s opening, this remarkable group of donors began with a shared vision inspired by Anne Springs Close herself and has grown into a thriving community of more than 560 households united by a passion for conservation and outdoor recreation.

GEORGIA ASTER (SYMPHYOTRICHUM GEORGIANUM)

A standout in the fall landscape, Georgia aster is a striking native wildflower found in the Southeastern United States. This droughttolerant bloomer brings a vibrant splash of color to open woodlands and prairie edges, with its deep purple petals and bright yellow centers that attract a variety of pollinators.

The best place to find Georgia aster on the Greenway is in the restored prairie at the Adventure Road Entrance, where it grows alongside other native wildflowers and grasses. Its late-season blooms provide a crucial nectar source for pollinators preparing for winter, reinforcing the importance of preserving native plant communities for biodiversity and ecosystem health.
