“In the 1800’s, female Samurai Nakano Takeko developed a warrior’s soul at an early age. When she was 21, war broke out and Nakano was banned from active duty because of her gender. She then built and led an army of intrepid female warriors. During an attack, she is fatally wounded in the chest and rather than let the enemy capture her head as a trophy, she asked her sister, Yūko, to cut it off and have it buried.” CLICK HERE TO READ FURTHER

“My intention is always to paint from a place void of thought. Abstract painting is a language to me, visceral and emotive and sometimes a puzzle to solve. Music plays a significant role in my process. I often listen to the same song on repeat for the entire time it takes to paint one piece. The lyrics become a thread in the work and I often title the name of the painting after a particular song or lyric. I listened to Billie Eilish sing ‘When The Party’s Over’ while I painted this piece.” _ HANNA ROSE
