For me, the bodily act of painting opens and expands my mind. Over time, my painting practice has used lines or paths to express movement through various environments; capturing a particular time and place. These painterly paths have the strange capacity to connect my inner world with the external landscape, to open up channels of imagination, connect with others and find beauty in the everyday.

Llael McDonald's work is moody and nostalgic, with underlying narratives that change from viewer to viewer. Delving into the familiar and bringing forward the ordinary to be presented to an audience with emotional and visual elevation. Llael cites the Flemish masters and Pre Raphaelites as a major influence on her work.

"In the spirit of 'Open Minds', my latest piece, 'Spectral', embodies the philosophy that an open mind is like an open horizon – boundless, receptive, and ever-changing, yet what we seek often lies before us, unnoticed in its familiarity. This work is an invitation to explore the unnoticed beauty that surrounds us, to appreciate the richness of what is present over the allure of distant horizons."

"Open Minds" embodies for me the essence of perpetual evolution and boundless exploration. It's a reminder to approach life with an open mind, embracing diversity of thought and experience as catalysts for personal growth. In my art practice, being open-minded means constantly pushing the boundaries of my creativity, daring to experiment with new techniques, themes, and perspectives. It's about shedding preconceptions and allowing inspiration to flow freely. ".

"Open Minds in my practice means having the readiness to appreciate and accept random accidents that happen as part of the normal madness of the painting process – where an untidy edge, smudge, or impetuous colour change – brings about a new dynamic in the nature of the artwork, often changing its character entirely for the better."

This diptych was selected by Hume Council in 2023 to become a site specific public artwork, in Sunbury where Bree currently lives and paints.

This work was created with the cultural significance of the two clans of Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin nation, who used the banks of Jackson Creek in Sunbury Victoria as their sacred meeting place in mind.
