ARTS COUNCIL OF MOORE COUNTY

THE GOLDEN AGE OF ART IN MOORE COUNTY The Arts Council of Moore County Celebrates 50 Years in this Creative Community By Evan Senn

The land of the pines is shining bright gold right now as it celebrates the Arts Council of Moore County in its semicentennial anniversary. This golden birthday may not seem like much to an outsider, but in central North Carolina there is no other organization that supports the arts as much as the Arts Council, and fifty years of creative support like that is quite a feat. Moore County is a unique place, as anyone who has ever lived here will attest. What makes it so special is the plethora of offerings this county has—vibrant and young at heart, open and inclusive, hip and high-end—in a charming “Hallmark Channel” style small town. Situated among rural communities of farmlands and nature preserves—Moore County stands alone as the most sought after “micropolis” in North Carolina. Activated by the cultural history of this area and fueled by the golf and equestrian industries, this area has become a destination for travelers from all over the world looking for the best experiences in golf and/or horses. Frequented by royalty, celebrities, creatives, and the wealthy since the late 1800s, the area has sustained its reputation as being a great place to visit, even with the frequent booming of the nearby military camp Fort Liberty, previously known as Fort Bragg. “Moore County is special because it is one of the only few places in North Carolina that you can get anything you want without having to live in a city,” Arts Council Executive Director Chris Dunn explained. “It’s like an island because the counties around us don’t have the wealth that we do.” With average individual earnings, our county is in the state’s top 10 in per capita income—that kind of local money needs to be spent, and the residents of this area have always put arts and culture at the forefront of their interests. “Golf is King, equestrian is Queen, [the local art scene] is here because they will support it,” Dunn said. Dunn has been working with the Arts Council since 1995 but the organization has been a cultural staple in the county since 1973. Back then, 11 volunteers started the Sandhills Arts Council with encouragement and support from the state. North Carolina was the first state in the U.S. to establish a Department of Art, Culture and History, [now the Department of Natural & Cultural Resources], and the North Carolina Arts Council was created by executive order of Governor Terry Sanford in 1964. With the premiere Arts Festival in the Park (1973), which attracted hundreds and was deemed a great success, the Arts Council was propelled into motion by a supportive community. Continuing with hundreds of exhibitions, grants and events, the Arts Council became a valuable asset in Moore County. Now, the Arts Council hosts nine art exhibitions a year, as well as a chamber music series, an annual event called the Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz, AutumnFest (an annual festival done in partnership with the Southern Pines Parks & Recreation Dept.), a free youth theatre program, Performing Arts in Moore Schools (PAMS) program, art scholarships and grants, and art tours across the nation and around the world. In addition, the Arts Council is creating a comprehensive online Arts Directory for all art-related organizations and artists, and they have also started Artist Circle Sessions, providing informative lectures and Photo of the Board of Directors in 1988…one of workshops to active artists and enthusiasts in the area. many that have guided the Arts Council over (continued next page) the past 50 years. Recognize anyone?

(continued from previous page) “We help put the arts out into the community in a way that shows that Moore County is more than just golf,” Dunn said. “I love golf, but there are things that we do within the schools that some of the kids will never see elsewhere in their lifetime. We give them experiences with artists, exhibit their work at the Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House, and we help with funding through the Grassroots and Artist Support Grants that get the arts into the community.” If you’re new to Moore County, the Arts Council should be one of your first stops. “Our charge is to support all the arts organizations and everything that’s going on,” Dunn said. “We want Actor Mike Wiley performs with some Union Pines High students to be that place you go if you need information in one of the Arts Council’s PAMS Programs in 2019. on where to do something in the arts—we want to be that place you visit to enjoy art. And the Campbell House galleries are here—it’s a beautiful place.” Half a century of that kind of local dedication, pride, and love of the arts is definitely something worth celebrating. Arts Council Volunteer Spotlight | We are as good as our people

ELIZABETH STRICKLAND Since 2010, Elizabeth Strickland has volunteered for the Arts Council. She started just after retiring from a 20-year career teaching 1st grade at Southern Pines Primary School. Born in New Bern, NC, she moved to Southern Pines as a ten-year old. After graduating from UNC at Chapel Hill, she returned home and married her high school sweetheart. She is the mother of two and has two grandchildren. As a volunteer, Elizabeth can often be found at the Arts Council helping with a mailing or serving on the Grassroots Grant Panel awarding grants to arts projects throughout the county. We are honored to spotlight Elizabeth, one of the many great volunteers who make the Arts Council a fun place to be. To learn more about Elizabeth, we asked her several questions... At what age did you become an adult? At age 22, my first year of teaching, when I realized what a huge responsibility I had been given. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I would learn to scuba dive. What is your favorite place in Moore County? Believe it or not, my favorite place is the Campbell House! When I was a child, my grandparents lived on the street behind it. My brother and I used to sneak through the woods and run and play in grass fields behind the house. We thought it was a magical place! If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would it be? Benjamin Franklin. I’m fascinated with everything he accomplished in his lifetime. What is your favorite thing about volunteering at the Arts Council? My favorite part of volunteering for the Arts Council is working with the staff. They are always so welcoming and work so well together. I have met so many wonderful people who also volunteer there. Thanks, Elizabeth, for making the Arts Council a great community asset!

Travels Near & Far Featuring the Sandhills Photography Club & Linda Dalton Pottery September 8-29, 2023 | Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House

The motto of the Arts Council’s ARTours has always been based on a quote by St. Augustine: “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” For our September feature exhibit, Travels Near & Far, the members of the Sandhills Photography Club and Linda Dalton Pottery invite you to read many chapters as they take us all on a journey to near and far away places through photos and pottery. The Sandhills Photography Club began in 1983 to help improve the photographic skills and technical knowledge of its members and to develop public interest in the art of photography. Open to beginners and experienced photographers, their current membership is 100 strong, some from around the world. Their programs include guest speakers, themed competitions, hands-on learning opportunities, and field trips to locations that present a variety of subject matter. The club’s biennial exhibit at the Arts Council features photos that reveal the true meaning of the show’s title, with a display of extraordinary images captured on their many field trips. For their members, taking photos is only part of the fun. “It’s wonderful to go on the club’s group outings,” says Susan Bailey, coordinator of the club’s outings and board member. “There is as much laughter as there is the clicking of our cameras.” The club meets the second Monday of each month (except in December) at the Sandhills Community College Ball Gardens Visitors Center. Guests are always welcome! Linda Dalton Pottery is the creation of Linda and Jim Dalton, a husband-and-wife team of potters who craft unique functional and decorative wares at their studio just minutes north of Pinehurst, NC. Their studio, open by appointment, has become a popular destination for out-of-town visitors as well as collectors. Here, visitors can follow the progress from raw clay to finished work and try their hand at making a piece of art. Custom and commission work is an area in which the Daltons excel. Once, a patron asked them about custom work and their reply was, “that’s why we call you customers!” They can do custom horsehair pieces with the hair from a specific horse, as well as custom trophies and awards for sporting tournaments and national car shows. The opening reception for Travels Near & Far will be on Friday, September 8 (6-8pm) at the Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House. The show will be on view September 8-29 (weekdays, 10am-5pm) and Saturday, September 16 (2-4pm). The exhibit is free and open to the public. Campbell House is located at 482 E. Connecticut Ave. in Southern Pines. Learn more at Learn more about these artists: www.MooreArt.org www.SandhillsPhotographyClub.org www.LindaDaltonPottery.com -11-

LIVE CHAMBER MUSIC IS BACK! Classical Concert Series Celebrates 42 Years

The 42nd season of the Arts Council’s Classical Concert Series (CCS) started with an email from pianist Miki Sawada. Miki listed her accolades typical of most professional musicians (e.g., Carnegie Hall performances, attendance at the best music schools, etc.). But she also wrote about a unique project, called Gather Hear Tour. After a Google search and a few email exchanges, Miki became the opening performer in the 2023-24 season. Miki started Gather Hear Tour in 2016 with questions: What role can classical music play in America today? How can she foster human connections across socioeconomic and political divides while capturing honest, intimate, and ultimately hopeful portraits of America amidst our current national climate? Her answer was to tour all 50 states with a piano in a rented van and perform in community gathering spaces, free to the public. The results by 2023 were 70+ free performances in Alaska, Louisiana, Utah, West Virginia, and Massachusetts, three films, a vlog series, a blog series, and commissions for original shows and music. On October 2, 2023, Miki will present a film screening of Gather Hear Louisiana and a piano concert event that explores how classical music intertwines with America through her unique perspective. Don’t miss what will be a most unique musical experience. The rest of the CCS season will feature Seraph Brass on (11/13/23), flutist Anthony Trionfo & pianist Albert Cano Smit on (2/26/24), and the Galvin Cello Quartet (3/18/24). Get your subscription to all four concerts at $115 per person ($96 for Arts Council members). A single concert is $35 per person. Tickets are available at the Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House (482 E. Connecticut Ave., So. Pines) or by calling 910-692-2787. All CCS concerts will be presented at 7:30 p.m. at the Sunrise Theater.

Reflections

October 6-27, 2023 Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House

Reflections will feature Threads, a group of fiber artists who explore techniques that were historically considered women’s work. In their creative processes the artists reflect on the makers of the past, build on their expertise, and expand on their knowledge. Exhibitors include Lynda Collins, Janine LeBlanc, Christine Hager-Braun (exhibit’s curator), Linda Lowe, Ann Roth, Georgia Springer, Kathy Steinsberger, and Jackie P. Weatherly-Cadzow. Lynda Collins was first introduced to the medium of fiber and cloth through her mother. Her mother would make all her family’s clothes, and Collins would pick up the scraps and make her own creations. When weaving, she uses shapes that are like waves. “It represents the rhythm of life,” she says. “The topics are Deceit of Perfection by often things that I am struggling with or issues that I want to give voice to.” Christine Hager-Braun Janine LeBlanc was born in Danbury, CT and has worked with several different textile mediums, though her work now consists mostly of peyote stitch beadwork. In her own words, “I enjoy the dislocation that occurs when objects are removed, in multiple steps, from their original form and reworked into another medium. The transformation goes from soft to hard, images into pixels, and realism to abstraction.” Christine Hager-Braun uses fabric and thread to import themes of resilience, the power of a powerful mindset, and emotional well-being into her art. “When seeing my art,” she begins, “viewers often share their personal stories in the context of mental health.” The best advice she’s ever been given is to trust your intuition and be confident in your work and yourself. Linda Lowe was born in Virginia and has lived along the East Coast of the US for most of her life. Like many of the artists in this exhibit, she has worked mostly with textiles, branching out into 3D fiber art. Art was in her life from the beginning. Her grandmother taught her how to sew when she was three years old, and her mother (also an artist) became a great source of inspiration for her work. Ann Roth’s artistic influences include natural and built landscapes and historical and contemporary textiles from various cultures. She plays with subtleties, complexities, illusions, and the interaction of colors. What tends to inspire her are tree and plant forms, ocean wave patterns, natural and fabricated textures and structures, the landscape, and architectural details. Born in Illinois, Georgia Springer’s great aunt taught her how to crochet by the age of four and kickstarted her love of textiles. Her influences range from world textiles, Native American symbolism, and her own photography. She describes her own art as “a meditation of both heart and hand referencing personal history, loss, grace, renewal, and repair of myself and cloth.” Folly by Ann Roth Kathy Steinsberger was born in Raleigh, NC. She’s worked in various mediums, such as printmaking, pottery, writing, and textiles. Steinsberger says her work is about telling a story, no matter what medium she’s working in. Her biggest creative influence is a ceramic artist and educator named George Kokis, who taught at the University of Oregon at Eugene. He subsequently told her the best piece of advice she has ever been given: “Have courage.” Jackie P. Weatherly-Cadzow was born in Three Rivers, MI and started drawing as soon as she was able to pick up a pencil. Her favorite mediums are textiles, acrylic, photography, and digital surface pattern design. She plays with themes inspired by nature and organic life and states that the best piece of advice she’s ever received is “to follow my heart and create every day!” Don’t miss the opening reception of Reflections on Friday, October 6 (6-8pm) at Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House. On view October 6-27 (10am-5pm, Learn more at weekdays) and Saturday, October 21 (2-4pm), the exhibit is free and www.MooreArt.org open to the public. Campbell House is located at 482 E. The Princess and the Pea Auditions: October 9 (3:45-5:45pm) Rehearsals: Oct. 9-12 (3:45-8pm) Shows: Oct. 13 (7pm) & Oct. 14 (11am) Location: Moore Montessori School Auditorium (395 E. Massachusetts Ave., Southern Pines)

Imagine a kingdom of snow where the residents are

ruled by Storm King and Snow Queen, and their Prince is looking for a proper Princess to share the throne. Now picture a Princess and her friend, the Pea, living in a kingdom of green rolling hills and running rivers. Her parents, King Size and Queen Size, do all they can to keep things running smoothly. Although the two kingdoms think they have nothing in common (except maybe pesky Jack Frost that freezes anything and everything), the peace-loving Leprechauns prove otherwise. Throw in some phony Princesses and you have a real fiasco! This ain’t your grandma’s Princess and the Pea, but we think you will enjoy its twists and turns. Since 1996, the Arts Council of Moore County has brought the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) to Moore County, in a little red truck, to present a week-long theatre residency with the goal to develop life-skills in our children through participation in the performing arts. This unique program begins with an open group audition and culminates in a performance for family, friends, and the community. Over 55 students are cast and rehearsed throughout the week, learning their lines, songs, and choreography to perform as an ensemble in a full-length musical. All MCT shows are original adaptations of children’s stories and fairy tales—a twist on the classic stories that you know and love. MCT arrives in town with scenery, costumes, props, make-up, and basic lighting—everything it takes to put on a play…except the cast. Any child in grades K-8 is invited to audition and participation is free. No theatre experience is necessary. Those auditioning should arrive promptly at 3:45pm on October 9, wear comfortable clothes, and plan to A scene from The Princess and the Pea attend the full two hours. Following the auditions, a rehearsal schedule for the week will be immediately available and some cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal. Save time at registration by bringing a completed audition form with you, which is available for download on our website at www.MooreArt.org/youth. The public performances of Princess and the Pea will be presented on October 13 (7pm) and 14 (11am) at the Moore Montessori School Auditorium at 395 E. Massachusetts Avenue in Southern Pines. Tickets to each show are $10 per adult and $5 per child (Arts Council members are $5 per adult and children are free). All tickets will be sold at the door. Mélange of Experience November 3 – December 16, 2023 Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House

Good things come in threes, so they say. For the Arts Council’s November/December exhibit, we offer a bonus with four artists who work in different mediums. The significance of the title is that each artist – Grace Hill, Anne Raven Jorgensen, Paula Montgomery, and Nanette Zeller – has been creating art for a long time and it shows. Grace Hill has always loved to draw and took several classes in college on figure drawing and later at the Art Institute of Chicago. But her interest turned to watercolor painting, and she enjoyed many classes in that medium in the upper Midwest. Now living in Pinehurst, she is learning the ins and outs of acrylics and really enjoying it. Anne Raven Jorgensen loves making pottery. She hand sculpts one-of-a-kind pieces and each has a little part of her If It Looks Like Love by Paula Montgomery in them. She finds clay so tactile and easily manipulated, but she also has to use her brain to solve problems. “I have this huge need to make things,” states Anne, “so, I am always working on something either in clay or metal.” Learn more about Anne at www.RavenPottery.com. Paula Montgomery’s primary subject is flora, but this show will include pieces from her Pot Series, as well as scenes from her travels during the past two years. Born in Washington, PA, she grew up in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, and lived and worked in northern Virginia for 23 years before moving Leaf Platter by to Pinehurst in 1996. Her main medium is oil paint. Unwilling to limit Anne Raven Jorgensen herself to traditional materials, she embraces mixed media techniques and materials in order to bring an abstract quality to her work. Thus, the paintings hover gracefully between abstraction and representation, exuding a sense of peace and joy. “If my work can bring a moment of happiness to the viewer, then I feel I've accomplished something worthwhile,” she explains. Learn more about Paula at www.PaulaMontgomeryArt.com. A native of Chicago, Nanette Zeller works in mixed-media textiles. She’s been sewing since she was 10 years old. With a master’s degree in wildlife biology, it is natural that she is inspired by the forests and birds. Her innovative textile art (generally called art quilts) is heavily embellished with thread to create beautiful textures. She is an author, instructor, and award-winning artist whose artwork and writings have been published internationally and featured on Quilting Arts TV and in Quilting Arts Magazine. In 2010, she began developing her own artistic voice incorporating surface design painting techniques, free-form machine stitching, and other innovative methods into her work. The results are original art pieces with a style that has evolved through a life-long creative exploration which is deeply influenced by a love of nature. Learn more at www.NanetteSewZ.com. TALLY HO! New paintings by Vanessa Grebe January 5 – February 14, 2024 Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House

The spirit of the horse and hounds comes alive in Vanessa Grebe’s art, displayed in the Arts Council's January/February exhibit, Tally Ho! Featured will be a series of new oil paintings that are partially a result of winning a 2023 Artist Support Grant from the Arts Council of Moore County and North Carolina Arts Council. She was born in Monkton, MD, a beautiful rural area known as “horse country.” Her first introduction to the world of art was through the antique shop that her parents owned when she was a child. “I was always surrounded by art, antiques, and curious things,” says Grebe. “I think that definitely got my creative juices flowing. When I was about six, I placed in a gifted and talented art program. I had an amazing teacher who made it possible for me to attend art camps that would have Southern Pines Past time by Vanessa Grebe otherwise been out of my reach.” While living in Charleston, SC, Grebe studied with Joyce Hall, an expert equine painter who has shaped the careers of many Southern artists. They shared a love for the beauty of the horse, recalling her days in Maryland where one often stopped in the road to let the hunt pass. Thus, she began to paint fox hunting and equestrian scenes that have a whimsical and modern feel. She works almost exclusively in oil. But never opposed to experimentation, she branches out to combine cold wax to her paintings. She's played with various substrates in her work – cardboard, burlap, found wood, painting on vintage textiles. Living in Southern Pines has helped stir her love of painting both horses and equine sports. “My show is representative of that adoration,” she says. “From walking out with the Moore County Hounds, to attending the Blessing of the Hunt, I hope the viewer feels the spirit and history of the many equestrian pursuits in our town.” Her work has been featured in public installations in Maryland, South Carolina, and North Carolina and exhibited in the Columbia Museum of Art. She is honored to have her paintings in collections ranging from the Tavares Collection in Massachusetts to Purlieu Restaurant in Charleston, SC, as well as homes throughout the country. To learn more about Vanessa Grebe and her art visit her website, www.VanessaGrebe.com, Facebook page at Vanessa Grebe Art, or on Instagram at @vgrebeart. Don’t miss the opening reception of Tally Ho! on Friday, January 5 (6-8pm) at the Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House. The show will be on view January 5-February 14 (10am-5pm, weekdays) and Saturday, January 20 (2-4pm). The exhibit is free and open to the public. Campbell House is located at 482 E. ARTS COUNCIL OF MOORE COUNTY PRESENTS

Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz Returns! February 8-9, 2024 | SCC’s Owens Auditorium

Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz burst onto the local music scene in 1986

at the Sunrise Theater as a fundraiser for the Arts Council. In 1992, the event moved to the Cardinal Ballroom at Pinehurst Resort and changed its date in 2006 to Valentine’s Day weekend (hence the new name). Up until the 2020 pandemic, one thing remained constant—Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz presented the best jazz artists available. On February 8-9, 2024, the event continues the tradition of presenting great jazz performances as a joint event by the Arts Council and Sandhills Community College. The list of artists who have graced the stage at Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz reads like a veritable “who’s who” in the jazz world. Artists like Shirley Horn, Marian McPartland, Ellis Marsalis, Freddie Cole, John Pizzarelli, and Preservation Hall Jazz Band would be headliners in any jazz club. Our audiences have welcomed a movie star (Molly Ringwald), waited for an answer to a marriage proposal, and joined a conga line throughout the ballroom. Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz weekend will begin on Thursday, February 8 at 7:00 p.m. with a free concert by the Sandhills Community College Jazz Band, directed by Dr. Larry Arnold. The SCC Jazz Band is a traditional big band with 15-20 volunteer musicians from Moore County and beyond. Since the 1960s, the group has had toes tapping and hands clapping. On Friday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m., Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz welcomes vocalist Jane Monheit who will headline with the Christian Tamburr Trio. Jane is a jazz and adult contemporary vocalist with a deep passion for the Great American Songbook. With many highly acclaimed solo albums, countless awards and accolades, and over two decades of international touring experience, Jane has not only been an extremely successful bandleader, but has had the privilege of making music with some of the greatest musicians, arrangers, and producers in jazz. Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz tickets for the Friday concert go on sale December 1. Ticket will be $35-$69 each and Vocalist Jane Monheit can be purchased at the Arts Council (Campbell House, 482 E. Connecticut Ave., So. Pines), Learn more at by calling 910-692-2787, or online at TicketMeSandhills.com. All www.MooreArt.org concerts will be presented at SCC’s Owens Auditorium (3395 Airport Rd., Pinehurst).
