Welcome to YOUR Arts Council
Thank you for your interest in the fourth edition of our program guide. We created this guide to share information about upcoming exhibits, opportunities for children, and high caliber artists. Our hope is that your curiosity is rewarded as you learn about our work throughout Moore County – thanks to our advertisers and patrons like you.
Founded in 1973, the Arts Council of Moore County is a nonprofit, charitable organization whose mission is to inspire and strengthen our community through the arts. Our offerings are reflective of our rich diversity, facilitating affordable access to the arts.
Our galleries and offices are at Campbell House, located in a picturesque 14-acre park at 482 East Connecticut Avenue in Southern Pines. For more than 100 years, Campbell House has been a beacon of culture, enhancing and influencing civic life. Once a part of the Weymouth estate, Campbell House is among our region’s most significant landmarks, listed on the National Register for Historic Places. In addition to the Arts Council, the manor is also home to the Boy Scouts of America, Southern Pines Garden Club, and Southern Pines Parks and Recreation Department.
The Arts Council hosts hundreds of artists annually, showcasing local, regional and national artists working in various media. Artwork changes frequently, making every gallery visit fresh and new, and a great place to find the perfect gift.
We serve over 15,000 children each year through our youth programs in every public, private, charter, and home school. Programs encompass visual and performing arts, scholarships to children pursuing their creative talents, and a partnership with ArtistYear, the first national AmeriCorps program for artists dedicating themselves to a year of service to our country.
Other programs include a chamber music series and premier jazz gala featuring world-class musicians, Artours to destinations of cultural interest, Autumnfest in partnership with the Town of Southern Pines, and support for local arts organizations with grants, ticket sales, and publicity.
This is YOUR Arts Council and we invite you to help sustain our work by becoming a member today. Joining is easy. Just visit www.MooreArt.org to learn more. PALUSTRIS: Nature’s Pallette
Celebrating Longleaf & Nature Through The Arts
April 5-24, 2024|Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House
Palustris: Nature's Palette will feature Nicholas Havner, Holden Richards, Irene Russell, and Carolina Young. The exhibit, an annual event, celebrates the local habitat and beauty in nature everywhere, the name Palustris taken from the Latin name for the longleaf pine.
In the heart of Southern Pines is the world's oldest stand of longleaf pines, the Boyd Round-Timber Tract, part of Weymouth Woods-Sandhills Nature Preserve. By the turn of the 20th century, 90 million acres of longleaf pines were all but lost and today only a fraction of the ecosystem remains. It now among the most biologically diverse and threatened places on earth.
Nature is the muse for Nicholas Havner, a Seagrove-area potter who depends on it for inspiration. “I create a decorative line of pottery,” he says, “handmade and wood-fired using various states of copper combined with unique elements from mother earth.”
Holden Richards is a traditional large format film photographer and native North Carolinian currently residing in Hillsborough. Inspired primarily by walking the creeks and rivers of Orange and Durham counties, these locations and subjects predominate his photographic work. He has studied view camera and historic process printing at Penland School of Crafts. Richard’s has been included in Jill Enfield’s Guide to Photographic Alternative Processes, The Hand Magazine, and The Oxford American. His recent monograph, Riverwalk, is included in the archives of the University of North Carolina and Duke University. His darkroom work has been included in The Cassilhaus Collection and the public collections of the cities of Raleigh and Durham.
Potter Irene Russell is a Virginia Beach native whose creativity was sparked by paintings in her family home by her great-aunt and older sister, Mary Page Evans. She moved to Southern Pines in 1969 and was introduced to clay on a visit to Jugtown Pottery. In 1970, she enrolled in her first pottery class at Sandhills Community College under the tutelage of Carlie Tart, and she returned to SCC in the 1980s to study pottery with Cliff Stuckey. Her work is defined by a free-flowing looseness – organic and alive with color. “I love hand-building with clay,” she says. “My most inspirational place in Moore County is pottery country.”

Caroline Young was introduced to art as a child and always loved creating and making art. Originally from Greenville, SC, she attended Sweet Briar College in Virginia, then graduated from Emory University in Atlanta. Young was a long-time resident of Southern Pines and now lives in Tryon, NC.

GRACE STROUD
Since early childhood, Grace Stroud has called Aberdeen, NC home. She graduated from e O’Neal School and earned her theatre degree from High Point University. In the summer of 2022, she started working for the Arts Council as an intern and was soon hired as the PR Coordinator. Not much later, she was also hired as the Youth Program Director. Her interests include reading and writing, costume design, and acting, her most recent roles being Doris Walker in Miracle on 34th Street and Suzette in Don’t Dress for Dinner, both productions of the Encore Center in Southern Pines.
What are your favorite activities? I adore the world of lm, television and the analysis thereof. I could happily spend an entire day doing nothing but picking apart a speci c piece of media, whether it’s one of the most critically-acclaimed television shows of the modern age or one of the worst B-movies to ever crawl out of the 1980s.
If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would it be? Carol Burnett. She is one of the main reasons I pursued acting and she continues to inspire my artistic endeavors to this very day. I could write essay upon essay on all the ways she has contributed and in uenced not only comedy, but the entertainment industry.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given? My creative writing professor in college was trying to explain a creative yet borderline incomprehensible writing assignment. Once we understood what he wanted us to do, he said, “See? You might accidentally create some amazing stu !” While not necessarily a piece of advice, I've applied those words to nearly all of my artistic endeavors. Some of my proudest moments have come about by pure unadulterated accident, and who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth?
If you could learn anything, what would it be? How to walk on water. at'd be a neat party trick.
At what age did you become an adult? Still waiting on that one.
What do you like most about working at the Arts Council? I love being able to fully immerse myself in the local art scene. I've been introduced to such wonderful musicians, visual artists, actors, and writers that I may not have ever met otherwise. It's been a blessing.
To learn more about Grace, we asked her several questions... anks, Grace, for making the Arts Council a great community asset!

Youth Arts Spotlight: Sam Ray
Judge’s Choice Award Winner in the 2023 Young People’s Fine Arts Festival
e Arts Council’s Young People’s Fine Arts Festival has been a staple of the Moore County art scene for years. Being able to exhibit such creative and diverse works from students all over the county while celebrating their skill and dedication, and their teachers is something that only bolsters the local creative community year after year, both in and outside of the school system. In honor of the upcoming 28th Annual Young People’s Fine Arts Festival, the Arts Council decided to take a closer look at one young artist in particular: Sam Ray.
Sam, who before this had never entered a piece into the festival, was the recipient of the Judge’s Choice Award for her submission, Self Portrait, during the 2023 festival. One year later, now in the midst of her senior year at Pinecrest High School, Sam is still incredibly invested and passionate about her work, and it shows in every aspect of her character. e Arts Council asked Sam a few questions about her winning piece and her approach to visual art as a whole. e honesty and insightfulness to which these questions were answered is inspiring. Following is a collection of the questions and answers:
When were you rst interested in visual art? I have liked visual art since I was able to pick up a pencil. I liked to watch cartoons as a kid and they inspired me to draw. I liked being able to bring anything my brain thought of to life through art.
What medium did you to choose for Self Portrait and why? I used charcoal because I nd it to be the perfect medium to show value and contrast. e ame in the piece is the only light source, so I knew that depicting value would be extremely important. e black and white would also help to symbolize the ideas of life and death I wanted to communicate.
Could you explain your creative process for Self Portrait? I wanted to communicate the feeling of being bored with life and not nding life and death serious issues when they relate to oneself. I pondered over how best to show these ideas and decided to photograph myself from various angles with the candle, because the re of the candle would represent the life that the gure was debating about putting out, as dark as that sounds. I chose the image with the best composition and edited it to be perfect in preparation for creating the piece. I used black paper and white charcoal to show value and contrast, relating life with white and death with black.
What was it like winning the 2023 Judge’s Choice Award? I was really excited and happy. It felt nice to be recognized for my skills because I am very passionate about the subject. Do you plan to continue your artistic pursuits after graduation? Yes! I plan to either become a tattoo artist or just a regular visual artist. I want to have art in my life always.
What is one of the best pieces of advice you have been given? “Nothing is embarrassing unless you allow it to be” has always helped with my con dence.
Any closing thoughts you’d like to share? I made this piece when I was going through one of the worst times of my life. I honestly think creating it helped me get to where I am today, even if it only helped a little. I am glad to know that people like it, and I hope that people can resonate with it in whatever way they need at the moment. ank you to those who viewed my piece, it really is an honor.
e 2024 Young People’s Fine Arts Festival will be on view at the Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House from March 1–28, 2024 (weekdays, 10am-5pm) and Saturday, March 16 (2-4pm). e exhibit is free and open to the public.

QUARTET SUCCEEDS DESPITE PANDEMIC
e last concert in the Arts Council’s 2023-24
Classical Concert Series will feature the Galvin Cello Quartet on Monday, March 18, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sunrise eater (250 NW Broad St., Southern Pines). Get your seats now to hear this award-winning quartet.
Comprised of members from China, Brazil, South Korea, and the U.S., the cello quartet was formed at the height of the pandemic. eir story is a testament to the power of teamwork.
Cellists Sihao He, Sydney Lee, Haddon Kay, and Luiz Venturelli met as students at Northwestern University in the studio of acclaimed pedagogue Hans Jørgen Jensen. Named after Northwestern’s Mary B. Galvin Recital Hall, the Galvin Cello Quartet began from the joy of friendship strengthened through collaborative music-making.
As part of a tight-knit cello studio, the four friends wanted to channel their collective passion for music. But with pandemic restrictions in place, the school running virtually, and Venturelli back home in Brazil, performing as a quartet was impossible. Despite the challenges, the group decided to enter the Fischo National Chamber Music Competition, one of the world’s most prestigious music contests.
With the competition deadline quickly approaching, Venturelli’s return to the U.S. sooner than anticipated, and all quarantine guidelines and safety measures taken, the group’s next twelve days were lled with preparation, rehearsals, and one nal recording session of all the required repertoire. eir perseverance paid o as they captured the silver medal at the 2021 Fischo Competition, followed shortly by winning the 2022 Victor Elmaleh Competition at Concert Artists Guild.
e pandemic may have muted many concert stages, but music has limitless possibilities to heal and restore. With an untamable desire to bring joy through music, the group was more excited than ever to explore the possibilities of a cello quartet. rough their music, they hope to celebrate the values of friendship, creativity and resilience in an ever-changing world.
Tickets for the Galvin Cello Quartet can be purchased for $35 per person at the Arts Council (Campbell House, 482 E. Connecticut Ave., Southern Pines) or by calling 910-692-2787.

The Wild Beasts
A lecture on Matisse, Derain, and the summer that changed The course of modern art
Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. & Thursday, March 14, 2024 at 10:00 a.m.
In the summer of 1905, Henri Matisse invited artist André Derain to join him in Collioure on the French Mediterranean for drawing, painting, and exploring the boundaries of their art in the beautiful south of France. It was in this small shing village that over the course of nine weeks the artists formed a partnership – creating a new and radical artist language by manipulating color to re ect feelings and sensations rather than the reality of nature. eir experiments with color, form and structure would radically change the direction of French painting.
Critics at the time called them “Fauvists” (the French word for “wild beasts”), reacting to what was considered their shocking use of color and not meant as a compliment.
According to Sabine Rewald of e Metropolitan Museum of Art, “Fauvism was the rst of the avant-garde movements that ourished in France in the early years of the twentieth century. e Fauve painters were the rst to break with Impressionism as well as with older, traditional methods of perception. eir spontaneous, often subjective response to nature was expressed in bold, undisguised brushstrokes and high-keyed, vibrant colors directly from the tube."
Matisse and Derain knew they had created something that would resonate throughout the art world. “Color was not given to us in order that we should imitate nature. It was given to us so that we can express our emotions,” stated Matisse. “When I paint green, it does not mean grass; when I paint blue, it does not mean sky.”
Ellen Burke will lead this lecture. She is an artist and educator with 37 years of experience as a studio instructor and ne and performing arts administrator. In addition to teaching in Massachusetts, she was an adjunct arts education instructor at the New Hampshire Art Institute. Since moving to Pinehurst, she has presented lectures at local galleries and taught group art lessons to children and adults.
e Wild Beasts will be presented on March 13, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. and March 14, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. in the Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House (482 E. TRANSFORMATIONS: Elements to Art
May 3-31, 2024
Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House
Transformation of elements into art is a testament to human creativity and craftsmanship. rough careful manipulation and artistic skill, elements can be elevated into objects of beauty and signi cance, enriching our lives, and re ecting the diversity of human expression.
In the realm of pottery, the artist transforms clay, a natural element abundant in the earth, into beautiful vessels and decorative objects. Paintings involve the transformation of pigments derived from elements such as minerals, plants, and even insects into captivating images that convey emotions, stories, and perspectives. Jewelry making involves the transformation of precious metals and gems into stunning pieces that adorn and enhance the beauty of the wearer.
e Arts Council’s May exhibit, Transformations: Elements to Art, features Jugtown Pottery, members of the Artists League of the Sandhills and JLK Jewelry.
Jugtown Pottery was founded in 1917 by Jacques & Juliana Busbee, eight miles south of Seagrove, N.C. e Busbee’s were artists with a love of craft who melded forms from ancient traditions with those developed in North Carolina. Since 1922, Jugtown pieces have been marked with the circular Jugtown Ware stamp.
Jugtown thrives on the aesthetic foundation laid out by the Busbees. Vernon Owens, recipient of the NC Folk Heritage Award and the NEA National Heritage Fellowship, wife Pam, son Travis and daughter Bayle are the main potters, while Bobby Owens mixes clay and glazes the pieces. Learn more at www.JugtownWare.com.
e Artists League of the Sandhills was started in the early 1990s as a place where artists could pursue their creative goals and realize their dreams of an arts community. eir mission is to provide quality art education and a creative work environment at a reasonable cost.
e city of Aberdeen generously provided the place, an old railroad storage terminal located at 129 Exchange Street, and the work of many artists and local businesses created and shaped the atmosphere.
e League now has 160 members, and contains studio spaces, two large classrooms, two galleries, and a library. Learn more at www.ArtistLeague.org.
Jennie Lorette Keatts (aka JLK Jewelry) is an award-winning jeweler who received an Artist Support Grant from the N.C. Arts Council in 2021. She is known for her sterling silver designs featuring handmade ceramic cabochons created from Jugtown clay and glazes. Featured in collections from all over the world, she occasionally works on collaborative pieces with her sister, Pam Owens.
Keatts loves creating pieces that re ect her love for the natural world and fuel her passion for the materials and techniques that have been used for centuries. Learn more at www.JLKJewelry.com.
e opening reception for Transformations: Elements to Art will be on Fri., May 3 (6-8pm) at the Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House. e show will be on view May 3-31 (weekdays, 10am-5pm) and Sat., May 18 (2-4pm). e exhibit is free and open to the public. Symphony of Colors
June 7-28, 2024
Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House
Art can be a symphony of color, like a musical composition, with an artist combining colors to evoke emotions or convey meaning. Warm hues bring energy and passion, while cool shades evoke rest and calm. e Arts Council’s June exhibit, Symphony of Colors, features Linda Bruening, Wayne Manning, KC Sorvari, and Kevin Womble. ese artists combine colors to engage viewers in a rich visual experience – harmonious and pleasing to the eye.
Linda Bruening is an accomplished oil painter who works with landscape and still life subjects in a representative or abstract style. “ is dichotomy creates a liberating approach, allowing me to deconstruct, change or interpret shapes, light, patterns, and colors in a unique way,” she says. “An abstract work draws the viewer in and lets them become part of the painting.” Bruening also teaches oil painting classes and leads group critique sessions at the Artists League of the Sandhills in Aberdeen, where she can be found in Studio 5.
Wayne Manning studied glassblowing at Salisbury University in Maryland. After graduation, he began his career in Vermont at Simon Pearce, Inc. He quickly worked his way from glassblowing apprentice to team leader. After moving back to Maryland, Manning enjoyed traveling with his glass to art & craft festivals. He worked with Je Auxer in Berlin, Maryland, and out tted many Ocean City hotels with extravagant chandeliers. Another move brought him to Moore County where he currently teaches art at Union Pines High School. He recently won an Artist Support Grant from the N.C. Arts Council.
Art has always been a part of KC Sorvari’s life. Born in New York, she started college as an art major and returned to it after moving to North Carolina. She paints primarily in watercolor, creating non-representational works. Her artistic in uences include her inner muse and all artists, but she was “gobsmacked” when she saw works by Australian artist, John Olsen. Sorvari lives by the adage: “learn something from every painting you do.” She can be found in Studio 12 at the Artists League of the Sandhills.
North Carolina artist Kevin Womble has always had a passion for drawing and creative expression. He works mostly in acrylic, and has dabbled in watercolor and pencil. He says his abstracts are more about texture, color palette, and what evokes emotion and feels right. He hopes his art "moves" people and speaks to them in ways "they didn’t know they needed." One memorable response to his work came after someone purchased a piece and said that it came to them at just the right time in their life.
We hope this exhibit comes at the right time in everyone's life... e opening reception for Symphony of Colors will be on Fri., June 7 (6-8pm) at the Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House. e show will be on view June 7-28 (weekdays, 10am-5pm) and Sat., June 15 (2-4pm). e exhibit is free and open to the public.
