JIM LAUDERDALE Throughout his three-decade career, master songwriter and two-time Grammy Award winner Jim Lauderdale has been a vital voice in Americana, both on the stage and in the studio. In addition to his impressive solo discography of over 28 albums, he has garnered substantial accolades working as a songwriter and sideman with iconic artists such as Dolly Parton, Blake Shelton, the Dixie Chicks, and Vince Gill. His unique sense of melody, expressive lyricism, and genre-spanning body of work have secured him a place of honor in the world of roots music.
PIEDMONT MELODY MAKERS Old-time music heroine Alice Gerrard, along with Jim Watson, Cliff Hale, and Chris Brashear, form the Piedmont Melody Makers, a NC-grown quartet who play unapologetic old-time, country and bluegrass music. Their relaxed, easy charm belies a serious collection of musical talent and songwriting ability with roots deep in the red soil of Carolina. Join them as they celebrate the release of their very first record.

A North Carolina native, Caleb Caudle has built his career and audience mile by mile through the Piedmont countryside. Caudle’s sound recalls the glory days of country music and the classic twang of such legends as Merle Haggard, Gram Parsons, and George Strait. His 2014 album Paint Another Layer on my Heart drew substantial critical praise and landed him on more than 40 year-end best-of lists. His latest effort Carolina Ghost explores his deep connection to the Old North State over a landscape of electric guitar, pedal steel and Hammond organ.
LEO KOTTKE Internationally renowned for his unique and adroit fingerpicking guitar style, Leo Kottke’s bluestinged playing has made an indelible imprint on the world of folk music. His most notable work, 1969’s 6- and 12-String Guitar (commonly known as the “Armadillo album”), has been released and re-released on many different labels over the course of the last 40 years. The two-time Grammy nominee and perennial ArtsCenter favorite brings to Carrboro his celebrated guitar playing and a peppering of stories from his extensive career.

CHARLIE PARR Having made his way from the plains of Duluth, Minnesota to the forests of North Carolina, Charlie Parr has won over crowds with his rustic, resonator-fueled folk songs. His latest release, Stumpjumper, was recorded in a farm outbuilding with the aid of Durham-based musician Phil Cook of Megafaun and Hiss Golden Messenger.

ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO As a veteran of the West Coast punk scene of the 1970’s, and a born-and-bred Texan, Escovedo took punk’s freewheeling ethos and applied it to the musical lexicon he had built over years of listening to everything from country and rockand-roll to Cuban jazz and Mexican ballads. Now a nationally-renowned solo artist, Escovedo received the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Performing in 2006 and continues to zigzag his way across the country, solidifying his status as a true American songwriting icon.

A CLASSIC COUNTRY CHRISTMAS The ArtsCenter’s annual Songs from the Circle shows are a celebration of the best in classic American Country and Bluegrass. THE BAREFOOT MOVEMENT CHRISTMAS Youthful trio The Barefoot Movement, named “Band of the Year” by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2014, deliver all of your classic seasonal favorites wrapped in a Christmas package. ROBIN & LINDA WILLIAMS With more than three decades of experience touring and performing classic country and gospel, as well as their extensive catalog of original songs, Robin and Linda Williams “shine like a diamond among rhinestones” in the world of contemporary Americana (David W. Johnson, The Boston Globe). Frequent appearances on programs like A Prairie Home Companion, The Grand Ole Opry, and Austin City Limits have won many admirers for their stirring live performances and heartfelt songwriting.
CEDRIC BURNSIDE PROJECT As the grandson of legendary North Mississippi Hill Country Blues musician R. L. Burnside, Cedric Burnside has been playing drums and singing the blues his entire life. He began touring with his grandfather at the age of 13 and continues to spread the Hill Country tradition around the world. Cedric is joined by Trenton Ayers, son of “Little Joe” Ayers, on guitar. JOHN SCOFIELD Aside from being one of the principal innovators of modern jazz guitar, John Scofield is a creative artist of an even rarer sort: a stylistic chameleon who has forged a consistent, rock-solid aesthetic identity. With multiple Grammy nominations and named an Officier dans L’Ordre des Arts and Lettres by France, Scofield’s legacy is as varied as it is impressive. With his “Country For Old Men” project, Scofield and company will sculpt jazz renditions of classic tunes by George Jones, Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Bob Wills, Patti Page and even Shania Twain to name a few!
LUCY KAPLANSKY After cutting her teeth singing in Chicago bars, Lucy Kaplansky left behind a promising career in music to pursue a degree in psychology and work with mentally ill adults. The musical friendships she had built, however, continued to pull her back into the studio, where she recorded several much-lauded projects with an impressive cast of collaborators. She returns to The ArtsCenter to share her poignant, emotional songwriting and celebrated voice.

The combination of Fraser’s deep mastery of the Scottish fiddle and Haas’s inspired, percussive playing has earned them a reputation as one of the freshest and most exciting duos in Celtic traditional music.
