Welcome to Artexpo New York 2012 the 34th Annual Artexpo & Our Debut at Pier 92 I’d like to extend a warm welcome to you for joining us this year for the 34th annual Artexpo, and our debut at Pier 92! We’re thrilled to be here, located adjacent to the Architectural Digest Home Design Show. To thrive in today’s fine art market, you have to think outside the box—both in terms of creating art and marketing it. “Innovation” is the theme of this year’s Artexpo, and you’ll see innovation in action throughout the show! Many of our exhibitors are exploring new frontiers in creativity, as you’ll see in “Innovations” on page 70. Other artists and galleries are harnessing the power of new media to gain exposure for their works, as discussed in “The Art of Online Networking,” an exclusive Q&A on page 38. One of the easiest ways to reach a wider audience of collectors and art aficionados is through Artexpo Studio—an online fine art marketplace powered by the Artexpo Team. ArtexpoStudio.com just launched its online retail gallery, and you can learn about it at Booth 296 and in “Reaching for the Stars,” page 82 of this Show Guide. Gallery owners are also invited to stop by our VIP Lounge, sponsored by GE Capital and located adjacent to the Show Office. You can enjoy light refreshments and learn how to grow your sales by offering financing to your collectors! In closing, I’d like to thank all of our many generous show sponsors, including GE Capital, Citibank and borro. On page 99, you’ll see a complete list of our partners, without whom Artexpo would not be possible. It’s an exciting time in the fine art world. New technologies have given us more resources than ever for expressing creativity and sharing it. I invite you to explore the many expressions of innovation at this year’s Artexpo New York. Sincerely,

4

A Guide to Artexpo’s Two Pavilions

If you’re attending Artexpo for the first time this year, you’ve probably noticed the show floor is divided into two main sections: the Gallery Pavilion and [SOLO]. Our Gallery Pavilion hosts publishers and galleries representing multiple established artists, and our [SOLO] Pavilion hosts a group of juried, emerging artists.

Gallery Pavilion

Our Gallery Pavilion comprises the majority of Artexpo New York. In this section, you’ll find both originals and fine art reproductions from large, highprofile galleries like Deljou Art Group, Blazing Editions, Progressive Editions, Brazilian Art Group, Masterpiece Publishing, MECENAVIE and Franco Senesi. These galleries represent a multitude of talented artists from across the US and all around the world.

Over its 34-year history, our Gallery Pavilion has hosted works by some of the world’s most renowned artists— including Andy Warhol, Peter Max, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Indiana, Keith Haring and Leroy Neiman.

22

[SOLO] Pavilion

Artexpo’s [SOLO] Pavilion showcases hundreds of the world’s top emerging, independent artists exhibiting their work in the hopes of being discovered by larger galleries. Every year, “Best in Show” awards are presented by our [SOLO] jury, composed of influencers and tastemakers from the design, fashion, art and culture sectors. Over the years, [SOLO] has launched many careers and served as a springboard for a wide range of artists.

Sat. March 24th / 12:00-1:00PM Period Design Sponsored by Heavenly Organics Michael Pacitti

Period Design is an interactive workshop that covers a timeline of thirteen periods in design. This program deals with thirteen recognized specific time periods of design and influence dating from the Ancient Egyptians to the Post Modernists. Each specific time period reveals its own historical categories of Architecture, Art, Motifs, Patterns, Color, Textiles, Picture Frames, and the Overall Design Influence. Just as custom framers and interior designers have a direct influence on the places and spaces we occupy, much of their ability stems from continual research within specific periods in design. From color to culture, these creative individuals have the proven ability to combine art and engineering to the final form of spatial design. The course delivery is interactive and participative, and each participant gets actively involved with each of the Periods of Design. There are numerous visuals and tangible examples supplied from the Color Marketing group and other patented examples from the Color Association of the United States. These tangible examples and story boards relate exactly to each specific Period of Design. Whether you are a Custom Picture Framer or Interior Designer, the art, image, motif or theme must fit the Period Design.

Thursday, March 22, 5 PM: American Premiere of Becomes—A Fine Art Short Film

Becomes is an unhurried foray into the studio of sculptor André Desjardins. Under the camera’s patient and discreet eye, a sculpture is born. Each step of the creative process is scrutinized; from the shaping of the armature, the fleshing out in clay to the finishing touches. The sculptor’s concentration and silence are intense yet fragile. Clinking of tools, focused breaths, a creaking floor; the spellbinding atmosphere of the studio plunges viewers into a near-meditative state. The artist shares his thoughts and challenges in confidential voice-overs. 35

The Art of Online A Q&A with New Michael Draznin

Craig Kausen

Principal at Michael Draznin Consulting

President of Chuck Jones Art Companies

It’s an exciting time in the art industry. Advances in technology and new media currently offer artists more ways than ever to create exciting new works—and to share them with the world. If you’re looking to gain more exposure for your fine art business and feeling a little daunted by online marketing, fear not! These days, it’s easy to get your name and art out there, even if you don’t consider yourself particularly tech-savvy. Below, our New Media panel speakers share tips on how to harness the power of new media platforms including websites, blogging, Twitter, Facebook, video and more to promote your business or gallery.

Let’s start with websites first. How important are they for artists and why? Craig Kausen: I guess that is simple: it’s basically the business card of today. If you don’t have it, no one will know you when they look. Amy Kettenburg: An online presence is essential for an artist, as millions of consumers embrace the digital age. People around the world can view your work at the click of a button. Michael Draznin: Websites are critical for at least two reasons. First, depending upon how they’re built and used, they can/should act as an online gallery and archive of an artist’s work. One in which the artist has complete control over content, look and feel to shape as they want. Second, they can also act as an e-commerce site for direct sales between the artist and buyers/collectors. Third, if “tuned up” with SEO and keywords, they help draw traffic and attention to an artist’s site, potentially helping raise awareness about his or her work, name, background, news (grants, shows, etc.) and more. Fourth,

a site acts as a platform or homebase where all other communications and/or marketing efforts lead back to. (By the way, I’m fully of the opinion that “marketing” does have a place in art. The starving artist concept is a true myth – a symptom rather than a requirement to succeed.) Fifth – going back to my first point – a site is one of the best ways for an artist to present their work when they meet new gallery directors, collectors etc. Andrew Russeth: Sometimes it’s definitely nice, when searching for information about an artist, to be able to see their work in one place immediately, so if you’re making work that you think is legible online, it might be worth doing. (Gerhard Richter seems to feel that way too! His website is really neat: http://www.gerhard-richter. com/) At the same time, a little bit of mystery never hurt, so I don’t think they’re super important. It just depends what you’re up to.

What are some of the easiest ways to get a website up if your time and resources are limited? MD: There are so many free and even pre-made options available now, I don’t know where to begin. One thing I’ve seen used very successfully, that also has a dynamic element to it, is Tumblr… for a variety of reasons. AR: Exhibit-E’s Indexhibit program seems to be pretty easy to use, and it has a clean and elegant design, if that’s what you’re looking for. CK: Truly, a website can be established in a day or two, based in WordPress, which is easy to establish and maintain, even for the technically challenged. And, it shouldn’t have to cost more than a couple hundred dollars to create. AK: When time and resources are limited, there are a variety of sites that will provide you with a ready-made

template. Sites like ArtexpoStudio.com give you a place to not only showcase and sell your work, but also assist in some aspects of promotion; whereas other sites like wix.com or otherpeoplespixels.com will provide you with ready-made templates that allow customization of colors and layouts but will not assist you in marketing or networking. It all depends on what is the best fit for you.

Social media platforms like Facebook, blogging and Twitter provide artists with a medium to share updates, and also to gain feedback. What’s the value of this online dialog? MD: Both individually and collectively, they are invaluable. For feedback, yes, but also for building community (and taking part in others’ communities), creating awareness, generating new directions and ideas for creative development, providing feedback to others (as well as building one’s own), and more. CK: These days, the social media platforms are another given when coming to basic awareness. The best thing about social media and the art world is that we (the art world) are basically a gregarious group, plus intensely visual, which both lend themselves to “social” (us) “media” (visual). AR: Those things seem like nice ways to keep in touch with your friends and keep an eye on what other people are doing. But in terms of dialog and feedback, I still think you need to meet up in studios, bars, and restaurants to chat and yell at each other. AK: Social networking sites have revolutionized the way artists can market themselves. Blogs as well as platforms like Facebook and Twitter are completely free and have the power to reach hundreds of thousands of people if you’re willing to be patient and dedicate yourself to building a following. Engaging in an online dialog with

others who share similar interests is so important for an artist trying to get his or her name out there. It takes time, but updating your social media sites regularly and responding to comments will build your fan base over time, lead to new opportunities, increase sales… and best of all it’s entirely free.

Are there any pitfalls of online promotion? What should artists watch out for? CK: I think placing too much emphasis on a website as far as attempting to gain attention can be a major pitfall. I think the analogy of leaving color images stacked on a bench at a car wash 15 years ago would be equivalent to just putting up a website these days. The color images might be crucial to have, but what you do with them day to day is the key. AR: I think it’s the same as “offline:” make sure you’re doing the work you want to do and don’t worry about the promotion. AK: As with anything, online promotion always carries a small element of risk. One of an artist’s biggest fears is that their work will be used without permission or proper credit. In this situation, however, the rewards far outweigh the risk. The bottom line is that, as an exhibiting artist, there will always be ways for someone to try to “steal” an image from you. Instead of fearing this, being proactive and responsible with your online presence will help stop this if it happens. MD: Don’t be a jerk. Don’t be egomaniacal. Don’t be foolish. Don’t be naive. Protect your work and ideas. Be generous with your work and ideas.

What do you consider the most valuable new media tool for artists these days? CK: I would say video is probably the most important thing that is really just becoming easily accessible and promotable within new media. AK: As Michael said, Tumblr is an incredibly powerful social media tool. Its blogging platform lets followers re-blog posts they enjoy from other bloggers onto their own blogs, thus posts can quickly “go viral” and reach thousands of people.

else followers will get bored, but be careful not to “overpost.” Over posting can lead to followers getting quickly annoyed with you. Stick to once or twice a day at most. Finally, be personal and proactive. Followers want to feel like they are connecting with the person behind the social media site. Always be friendly and professional. MD: Jump in and get going! And approach both SM and online marketing as works in progress… just like your artwork.

MD: Clear thinking, good ideas, courage and a sense of humor. Maybe not what you expected, but I feel – based on experience – these are the most valuable. AR: Websites are pretty great, if they make sense for what you do as an artist. It’s really fun to visit sites of friends or artists that I like and see what they’re up to. “Wow! They’re in a group show over at that gallery. Hey! They just published a little booklet of their writing.” I love it.

What advice would you give artists looking to get their feet wet with social media and online marketing? CK: 1) Get a WordPress-based website under your own name. 2) Sign up for Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. 3) Start producing a few videos of you creating or talking about your art that are fun and short. AR: Make a website and use those other things to talk with people you know, if you want, and then get back to work. AK: If someone is looking to take the plunge into social media, I would suggest starting with just one platform and getting to know it well. Tumblr or Twitter are good places to start because their formats encourage linking to and re-blogging others, which should be one of your ultimate goals. You want someone to get so excited about what you’ve just posted that they share it with someone else. That’s how word spreads and you gain popularity and fans. Make sure you post regularly or

Artist Highlight Threads of Creativity and Sustainability Sewing Artist Paul Nosa

Paul Nosa is like the Johnny Appleseed of creativity, eco-friendliness and edgy artistry. His national “sewing tour”—soon underway—cuts an ambitious swath that he hopes will inspire people’s creativity, provide a tangible patch for their ideas (literally), and teach them to use alternative energy sources. Nosa seeds ingenuity and delight wherever he sews.

his interpretation on the spot onto a piece of fabric or “patch.” He’s put people’s ideas in stitches more than 5,000 times. For the sake of sustainability, the sewing machine is mounted to his Solar Sewing Rover, a portable table powered by a solar panel and a bicycle electric generator. People ride the bicycle and generate electricity to make their own patch. With support from friends and wellwishers, Sewing Tour 2012 will begin from Nosa’s hometown of Tucson, Arizona, in May and finish in October. The tour will follow cities along the west coast including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and then head eastward to Chicago, Pittsburgh, Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C.—with many more cities to be included.

USA Tour

“I’m an artist who draws with a sewing machine,” says Paul. “My designs aren’t pre-drawn and I don’t use a computer or template. This is a non-traditional method of using a conventional sewing machine. I’m totally self-taught.” Nosa, who has been sewing for the past eight years, asks people to think of a scenario in “five words or less,” and sews 46

“By supporting the project,” says Paul, “you will be helping to cover the cost of my solar-powered drive around the country. As well as receiving a piece of my artwork with your pledge, you will be helping people to use their imaginations, understand how to use solar energy, and build a bicycle electric generator.”

Changing the Landscape for Gallery Owners: The GE Capital Luxury Financing Program Booth A-100

If you’re a seasoned gallery owner, chances are this scenario sounds familiar: you’re showing an extraordinary work of art to an art aficionado. He loves the piece and it would bring him years of enjoyment. The price tag is within his budget, yet somehow he ends up leaving empty-handed. Chances are he wouldn’t have, if you’d offered him the Luxury Financing Program through GE Capital. The Luxury Financing Program was created by GE Capital to help gallery owners accommodate customers and increase sales. With this program, you can provide your clients with pricing they’ll love on pieces sure to enrich their homes, offices and lives. Take the scenario in the first paragraph. Imagine you’d been able to offer your client extended financing options not available with traditional credit and bank cards, including paying over 6, 12, 18 or 24 months without interest. Dedicated credit lines at your gallery would make the path to purchase even smoother for your client. As you know, building relationships

66

is at the crux of gallery management—the more you accommodate your clients, the better. Simple, fast and easy, the Luxury Financing program benefits you, too. It’s a superior alternative to in-house financing and there’s no cost to set up. Moreover, research shows that customers buy more on a GE Capital Luxury card than they would with a traditional credit card. If you’re a gallery owner and you’d like to know more, we invite you to enjoy drinks and conversation with a financing expert in our VIP Lounge. Sponsored by GE Capital, it’s located in the front of the show, adjacent to the show office. You can also find GE Capital online at www.gogecapital.com

Gallery owners: Stop by our VIP Lounge, sponsored by GE Capital!

Mason Cooley, known for his iconic American aphorisms, once said: “Art begins in imitation and ends in innovation.” At this year’s Artexpo, we’re celebrating artists who push the limits of convention and creativity to explore unchartered territory in fine art. Below, you’ll find a selection of some of this Artexpo’s most innovative artists.

Alexis Silk Booth #1029

Melanie Rothschild Booth #1324

Illinois-based artist Alexis Silk works in molten glass and metal to create figurative works that are timeless yet thought provoking. A student of human form, she combines close knowledge of anatomy with a passion for fire and an unquenchable thirst for meaning. Technically, she pushes the boundaries of what is possible. Her glass figures are sculpted entirely freehand while the glass is scorching hot on the end of a blowpipe or punty rod. Alexis explores issues of human nature, society and the relationship of humans, nature and industry. Her hanging figures are an eloquent exploration of the objectification of the body. Since receiving her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005, Alexis has continued to study with glass masters such as Pino Signoretto, Richard Royal and Boyd Sugiki. She has been working full time as an artist since 2006. Today she has work in museums, galleries, private collections and fine art shows around the country.

Melanie Rothschild / Paint & Air II

California artist Melanie Rothschild says her striking Paint & Air series was born from a mistake. “[It started with] spilled paint that was too messy to clean until it had dried. When it was ready to be chipped off the ground, it came up in one glorious piece! Spilling paint became the craft, a new starting point. This then, becomes a painting in the most basic sense—all paint, no canvas, just paint and the air that transforms it from liquid to solid.” A self-taught artist, Melanie has made a living with her art for most of her life. Her functional work has been sold in stores and galleries since the early ’90s throughout the United States and has been licensed to Target. She has a master’s degree in the Study of Creativity and a bachelor’s in Ethnic Arts with a concentration in Anthropology. She has exhibited widely and her work is in private collections in the US and abroad.

Steven Spazuk—exhibiting with Deljou Art Group—has discovered an extraordinary new way to draw and paint. A candle, a sheet of paper and swirls of black smoke transform the artist’s hand into a seismograph that reveals gossamer transparencies, voluptuous spheres with ephemeral halos and surprising x-rays of the soul’s body. work presents imperceptible segments and fleeting moments beyond the material reality that the non-trained eye cannot see,” says Malena, who has exhibited widely in Florida and made forays into China’s art scene. “As French writer Gabriel Bauret indicates in his book Approach to Photography, photography serves as testimony of reality but it is also a recall and a reconfirmation of the existence of that reality.”

Tibi Hegyesi Booth #2501 Tibi Hegyesi is a Toronto-based visual artist whose distinctiveness lies in his ability to capture the essence of the world around him through vibrantly contemporary visuals. His works possess tremendous depth of field and richness of color.

media, these days Spazuk merges paint, collage, gold leaf and the main element, soot—the residue of smoke and fire. Working with soot is indeed a rare technique, as the last practitioners of this art form were cave-dwellers. Using accident and intent, Spazuk’s work evokes the elegance of a dancer’s moves, the power of a masculine figure, the beauty of nature in the eye of the beholder. Spazuk gives us a suggestion of a person’s energy, or a literal impression on the paper. Other times Spazuk has left the remains to the subtleties of nature, of errant bugs and rain, or etched upon them with miniscule brushes. The final effect is elusive, mysterious and graceful.

A Master of Fine Arts, Tibi creates fused acrylic paintings that explore a wide range of themes where matter is reduced to the elemental, so that each finalized image is “pure and essential.” Tibi’s works are held in private and corporate collections throughout North America, Europe and the Far East. He regularly exhibits in art galleries and at art events in Canada, the US and beyond. In 2007, he founded woofportrait.com, a site that employs contem-

Carlos Torres / Masterpiece Publishing Booth #218 Represented by Masterpiece Publishing, Carlos Torres was born in Bogota, Colombia. While studying anthropology at Universidad Nacional Bogota, he changed his course of study and subsequently graduated with a Degree in Art. His intimate exposure to the artifacts of the ancients inspired Carlos’ unique use of textures and warm earth tones and the energetic magnetism that is so obvious in his works. Each of his creations — whether a painting or a sculpture — evokes an emotional response, perhaps even the same type of spiritual feeling that Carlos himself experienced at dig sites in his native Colombia as a student.

sometimes controversial—art has roots in both Graffiti and the work of the great New York Abstract Expressionists of the 1950s. These days, he creates original, high-end artwork, designs and installations for many different clients. One of his best-known projects was a critically acclaimed, sixwindow display for Macy’s in New York City. He has also created Graffiti-influenced clothing and footwear designs for fashion icons including Rachel Roy and the Knicks’ Amar’e Stoudemire. He currently teaches Graffiti art classes on the Upper West Side with the Goddard River Side Beacon Program.

After immigrating to the United States in 1980, Carlos continued to develop the style that he refers to as “Organic Abstraction.” His paintings and sculptures range from highly organic textural pieces that feature earth tones, to more geometrical, abstract offerings with an expansive color palette and intersecting lines. He was awarded First Prize honors at the Salon Alzate Avendano in Bogota, Colombia and represented Colombia in a prestigious art competition held in Cuenca, Ecuador. He was also among only thirty artists selected to participate in a second competition in Madrid, Spain. Carlos lives with his wife and three daughters in Southern California. George “SEN One” Morillo Booth #3282 New Yorker George “SEN One” Morillo has been a Graffiti artist since the golden era of Hip-Hop culture in the early 1980s. At the age of just 15 years, he was commissioned to do a live art show and canvas for the late, great photographer Richard Avedon. A few years later, when New York City began to crack down on street artists, “SEN One” traded city walls for fabric canvases, making a name for himself in the Fine Art world. His beautiful—

Exhibiting at this year’s Artexpo with MECENAVIE, NosmaS creates multi-layered mixed media works with strong urban undercurrents. Elements of collage feature prominently in his works, giving viewers a glimpse into his gritty, colorful world. NosmaS’ career as an artist began with his studies at the School of Fine Arts. At 49 years of age, he entered the world of media and graphic arts, where he managed several companies. During this period, he found himself continually drawn to Graffiti, torn-up posters and “that which

we usually name ‘visual pollution’.” He decided to become “a hunter of these posters” and began tearing them from walls to recompose them in mixed media works. Today, he exhibits widely through MECENAVIE of France.

Jesse Newman Booth #2446 Jesse Newman’s daughter Emma has long had an enchantment with both the environment and Greek Mythology. Out of love, and in support of her interests, he decided to embark upon an epic personal project: creating a work of art that depicts her as Goddess of Earth. “Rebirth of Gaea,” now on display at Artexpo, is what Jesse describes as “hyper-real fantasy art,” a tapestry of layers delicately interwoven from ancient narratives, personal experience and visual effects.

York and Gallery Yamaguchi of Tokyo. Miyako claimed the prestigious SOLO Award for independent artists at Artexpo New York 2011.

Tatiana Tretyakova Booth #422 Moscow-born artist Tatiana Tretyakova employs mixed digital techniques—a “merger of photography of stained glass and drawing”—to create contemporary art that’s infused with energy. “I love abstraction,” says the artist. “I think that abstract art is more interesting and personable than any other form of art. Abstract art makes it possible to go beyond reality to express myself and my perceptions of the world.”

Jesse Newman /Gaea Longs For Ouronos

Prior to focusing solely on his artwork, Jesse worked as a visual effects artist on several creatively challenging and award-winning projects, including feature films (Armageddon), commercials (M&Ms, Verizon, HP), broadcast designs (Disney, SciFi, HBO) and short films (Shapeshifter, One Rat Short). He lives with his wife and three children in the New York City area.

Miyako Aoki Booth #2777 Miyako Aoki is a mixed media artist who employs aluminum to explore new dimensions in light and space. “The reason I use aluminum is this,” she says, “the work looks lighter than when painted on canvas. Also, with the changing light, aluminum gives the work further spatial dimensions and plays an important role as empty space.” Born in Japan, Miyako went on to study fine art at the Central St. Martins College of Art & Design in London and at New York University. Her works are well known in contemporary circles, and she has exhibited widely in Japan, New York, and beyond, at venues including Artexpo New

Tatiana Tretyakova / Madame Butterfly

Trained as a pediatric nurse, Tatiana always enjoyed drawing and photography as hobbies. After a formal education in the arts, her passion for painting and photography grew into a second career. She currently lives and works in Stamford, Connecticut, where she creates her unique “Glass in Motion” works from her studio, TT Contemporary Art. Her works are in private collections in the U.S., England, Brazil, Canada and Russia, and she has exhibited widely.

Meditations on Mystical Expressionism The Lifesaving Art of Sarah Ali

Euphoria

Sarah Ali’s entry into the world of art probably saved her life. Born into a family of two physicians, she pursued an MBA, married and became the proud mother of three children. However, two years ago, Sarah’s health rapidly deteriorated and doctors couldn’t find the reason or a cure. After months of grueling tests and hospitalizations, the mystery ended with the devastating diagnosis of lupus.

From The Heart II Sarah fell into a severe depression. Fortunately, her maternal uncle JAMALI, one of the most respected contemporary artists in the world, and creator of the unique “mystical expressionist” style, came to her rescue. 76

“He encouraged me to start painting,” explained Sarah, who initially resisted. “My uncle taught me that painting is an act of meditation, which can bring about feelings of euphoria like no other.” Having nothing to lose, she picked up a paintbrush and hasn’t been able to put it down since! In Sarah’s work, we can see her inner experience—severe pain during a flareup, as well as bright euphoric colors on “good” days. “Whatever the day brings, with the help of my painting, I can deal with this condition in a whole new light. When I paint, it brings a very intimate, intense feeling—a great sense of peace and tranquility surrounds me—I believe it has saved my life,” she said. Sarah’s work incorporates unconventional media such as pigmentation on imported Spanish cork. Her Fresco Tempera paintings are created outdoors in collaboration with nature and all its basic elements. In many of the pieces one can see leaves, twigs and grass. Powder paints are applied along with water to form rich, textured pieces. Once the pieces are complete, varnish is applied to secure all the substrates. Last December, during Art Miami, Sarah Ali was recognized by Baterby’s Art Auction Gallery as a 2012 “Best Florida Artist.”

Reaching for the Stars ArtexpoStudio.com Launches Online Art Gallery to Skyrocket Artists’ Careers & Connect Them with Collectors Jeanne Bessette / Gotcha

A figure reaches skyward, grabbing hold of a star in “Gotchya,” a 36” x 36” acrylic by mixed media artist Jeanne Bessette (Booth #2399). “It’s an inspirational piece for all the dreamers who reach beyond their limitations,” says Jeanne. It can also be seen as autobiographical—she’s one of the rising stars in today’s art scene. Over the past year, Jeanne has been featured in numerous publications, and her work is currently being shown in 8 galleries across the U.S. She was also designated one of “Top 50 Emerging Artists” by Art Business News magazine. Until recently, Jeanne, while extremely talented, was a relatively obscure artist. So why the sudden shift? “A year ago this month I made a monumental decision to stop playing it small,” Jeanne explains. Leaving the security of her “co-op local artist mentality” in Raleigh N.C., she hired career coaches and joined entrepreneurial groups. “I started learning to think like a business person and changed my mindset to align with what I wanted for myself.” She also began painting 82

every day. Word quickly got out about Jeanne’s joyful, richly textured works, and soon she was featured on the cover of Still Point Magazine. Reaching higher still, Jeanne became a Charter Member at ArtexpoStudio.com—a newly launched, juried online art gallery powered by Artexpo. Through ArtexpoStudio.com, Jeanne began offering museumquality reproductions in multiple sizes and substrates, expanding her consumer base significantly. “Prints are wonderful if the original is not available, or for collectors who love the imagery but are not quite ready to purchase an original piece,” says Jeanne. “The nature of my work is very textural and it has great depth, so these reproductions are a great way to offer pieces that look like an original piece of work.”

Helping Artists Expand Their Options Helping artists expand their options is what ArtexpoStudio.com is all about. Founded by Artexpo CEO Eric Smith and Director of Operations Robert Reeder, the site was formed with one goal in mind: to provide artists and gallery owners with an unparalleled suite of services to bring them increased exposure and success. “The model is simple, fair and abundant,” says Robert. “We offer artists and gallery owners museum-quality reproductions of their originals through our digital archiving studio. Then, we give them the tools they need to share these vibrant, archival works with more collectors—both online and at shows like Artexpo. From digital archiving through printing, marketing, distribution and mentoring, we’re here to help talented artists step into the spotlight.”

Digital Archives—Invaluable for Every Artist ArtexpoStudio.com initially debuted at Artexpo New York 2011, at which time it was exclusively an artists’ portal, offering digital archiving and reproductions directly to artists. Digital archives are an invaluable merchandising tool for artists, affording them the ability to represent their work accurately online, sell open edition and limited edition reproductions, or use the image to create new mixed media art. With impeccable archives and reproductions, artists can make their works available to a wider audience of collectors, and in a wide range of sizes and prices.

become striking silhouettes against a sea-green sky. Layers of texture and manipulated color are added until a vintage elegance is achieved—and Kristen’s creative spirit is satisfied.

Making Museum-Quality Reproductions from Originals After spending long hours on each piece, Kristen is happy she can turn to Artexpo Studio for reproductions that capture the vibrancy of her original work. “The reproductions are exceptional,” says Kristen. “My work is mixed media and capturing the dimensionality of the work can be difficult. The Artexpo Studio production team works closely with the artist to make sure the capture and colors are just as perfect as the original.” Like Jeanne, Kristen’s star is rising on the horizon of the art scene. Through Artexpo Studio, she is now represented by an agent for both art publishing and licensing. They’re currently in conversations with two galleries and have been presented with several opportunities to license and publish her artwork.

At this year’s show, ArtexpoStudio.com is launching its juried online gallery, where collectors can now access museum-quality reproductions by a host of talented artists. For Nixa, Missouri-based photographer Kristen Ray Naugle (Booth #2416), the launch comes at just the right time. “For the past several years, I have been making slow but steady strides to develop my art and get it marketed,” says Kristen, also a Charter Member artist. “What I realized is: by myself, I would never achieve my dream of gaining exposure and sharing my art more broadly. I am looking forward to the exposure that ArtexpoStudio.com can give me through the launch of this online retail platform.” A busy mother of three boys, Kristen spends what free time she has indulging her passion for photography. Her lush floral compositions are the result of what she describes as “a search for poetry in nature” and an exploration of “the simplest, most basic objects in my environment.” Under Kristen’s lens, small dogwood blossoms bloom large and luminous. “Selling your artwork is like any other business,” says Kristen, “You have to be very proactive to get noticed. This is difficult, because as artists we would like to be in our studio creating all day, every day! Some artists are able to balance both the marketing and business side of pursuing and developing their careers, while others have to recognize the need for help. From my experience, an agent can be a great partner in managing and increasing placements. The Artexpo Studio team is always available and continually supporting the needs of the artists – and presenting new ideas and opportunities.” Interested in learning more about ArtexpoStudio.com and its many talented artists? James E. Caldwell III / Booth #1120

James E Caldwell III graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2000 and has been a student of art for as long as he can remember. He was heavily influenced by his father, the renowned California landscape painter Jim Caldwell. James has always loved cars, and as he became more serious about painting they seemed to be an obvious subject choice. He continues to find it a rewarding challenge to capture the complex reflections and distortions of light and color in the intricate surfaces of automobiles. Kristen Ray Naugle / Booth #2416

Kristen Ray Naugle’s Mixed Media works are beautiful, timeless creations inspired by the world around her. In most of her artwork, layers of texture and manipulated color are integrated until Kristen’s creative spirit is satisfied. One could say it is a search for Poetry in Nature. Her desire is that the viewer will see her artwork as simple elegance from classic inspirations. Kristen’s background in graphic design gives her a unique perspective on Mixed Media Art – combining a love of nature and design skills, building each piece with layers of color, texture, artistically influenced photography and hand embellishments. Linda/Theodore M. Shinkle / Booth #1323

Mother and son duo Linda and Theodore M. Shinkle photograph “where feelings coincide at the intersection of technology and compelling composition.” Collaborative photographers, they scour for rare and unique moments in the natural and human worlds. Shapes, abstract and textural elements together with the connectivity among light, shadows and reflections inspire them. Linda trained in darkroom techniques at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI while obtaining a Bachelor of Arts, continued study at the Sorbonne University of Paris in Paris, France and was tutored by National Geographic in Sienna, Italy and on an Around the World excursion. Theodore received a Bachelor of Arts from Denison University in Granville, Ohio with photographic study at FAMU, Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic and work experience in the cinema industry. Their work has been exhibited, collected and published in numerous venues and they have photographed on-location on five continents. Malena Assing / Booth #161, 166

Malena Assing works with images “stolen” from moments of her life. She captures sudden reflections, abrupt apparitions of colored fields combined with geometric forms and their pictorial shapes. In the end, according to Malena, “it is no more than the metaphysical power of light and its energy.” In her photography, Malena hopes to convey the invisible spirit of life and the unseen aspects of energy. Her abstractions present fleeting moments beyond the material reality, which the untrained eye cannot see. As French writer Gabriel Bauret indicates in his book Approach to Photography, photography serves as testimony of reality but it is also a recall and a reconfirmation of the existence of that reality. Weezy / Booth #2677

With her husband at the wheel, this Philadelphia-based photographer scours back roads, old barns and abandoned yards from upstate New York to the Southwest in search of vintage pickups. Though most of the trucks Weezy finds haven’t started for years, more often than not they’ve acquired a complex, beautiful patina of age that makes them an integral part of their environment. Weezy, who trained at Moore College of Art, the University of the Arts and Philadelphia University, was originally drawn to photograph birds, flowers and landscapes. Then she hung her first vintage truck painting in a store in Hudson, NY. It sold the same day. Hans Petersen / Booth #2497

Hans Petersen’s vibrant, large-scale paintings show the influence of the CoBrA Movement, a collective of Northern European artists dedicated to complete freedom in color and form. In the bright colors, aggressive brushwork and compositional excitement of his ART-I-TECTURE series, the Danish-American painter abstracts his environment into patterns and textures that seem to dance on the canvas. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen, Hans started out as a graphic designer. His work brought him to the USA; first New York City, then Charlotte, NC, where he created marketing materials for the American furniture industry. In 2005, Hans took up his brushes again as a full-time painter, yet his graphic design background still informs the visual logic and bold compositional sense of his canvases. Hans Petersen’s vivid paintings are sought after by discriminating collectors and his work is featured in private collections throughout the United States and Denmark. Location: Rock Hill, SC ArtexpoStudio.com gallery: Coming soon. Website: www.hanspetersenart.com

Jeanne Bessette / Booth #2399

Jeanne Bessette interacts with the canvas on a deeply intuitive level. She doesn’t plan composition or color; she just opens herself to her “inner sanctum.” Her mixed media works are created with sponges, rags, fingertips, colored pencils, ink, graphite, charcoal, spraying through stencils, palette knives to scratch through a layer of paint to the source underneath, a few brushes, crayons, pastels, chalk, corrugated cardboard, burlap, gesso, paints—whatever jumps into her hands. Each of Jeanne’s works features up to ten layers of her own secret glazing formula. These abstracts are the landscapes of her emotions and faraway memories. Her work is seeded in a deep desire to connect with others through visual media, in the hopes that her story might awaken them to their stories. Roland Morin / Booth #161, 166

Roland Morin did not always paint in the unique, Abstract Expressionistic style for which he has become known. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he attended PICA (the Professional Institute of Commercial Art) in Baltimore and painted in dark, drab colors during his teenage and young adult years. In a dramatic change of style that he attributes to his encounter with Jesus Christ, he began painting in the vibrant, colorful, modernistic style that is his trademark today. In his cheerful creations, Roland now uses simplistic art expressions and techniques in combination with vibrant, vivacious colors. He explains the use of bright colors in his paintings is a means to counter a world that can seem dark and heading on the path to disaster. His hope is that the vibrancy in his artwork can bring great joy to the viewer. Location: USA ArtexpoStudio.com gallery: www.artexpostudio.com/ roland-morin Website: www.morinmodernart.com
