Brooklyn Director: John Crowley Drama/Romance, 111 mins, Cert 12a Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen, Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters A romantic drama adapted from the novel by Colm T贸ib铆n. Set in the 1950s, the story follows young Irish woman Ellis Lacey as she travels to New York City, hoping to find a better life. Initially homesick, she begins to adjust to her new surroundings with the help of ItalianAmerican Tony Fiorello, who she becomes romantically involved with. After news of a family crisis, Ellis returns to Ireland where she enjoys spending time back in her home town and becomes acquainted with a young man, Jim Farrell, finding herself torn between two very different paths.
Song of the Sea Director: Tomm Moore Animation/Family/Fantasy, 93 mins, Cert PG David Rawle, Brendan Gleeson, Lisa Hannigan From the director of The Secret of Kells, comes this enchanting, breathtakingly gorgeous Oscar-nominated animation. Based on the Irish legend of the Selkies, it tells the story of Saoirse, the last seal-child who goes on an epic journey with her brother Ben to save the world of magic and discover the secrets of their past. Pursued by owl witch Macha and ancient, mythical creatures, Saoirse and Ben race against time to awaken Saoirse's powers and stop the spirit world from disappearing forever. Song of the Sea is a wonder of magical storytelling and visual splendour and destined to become a classic.
Saving Grace Director: Nigel Cole Comedy, 92 mins, Cert 15 Brenda Blethyn, Craig Ferguson, Martin Clunes Trevethen knew life would get tough after her husband's suicide... but she had no idea just how tough. Left with a manor on the Cornish coast, a mountain of debt and dozens of creditors on her heels, she is about to lose everything. But with Matthew, the manor's caretaker, Grace hatches an outrageous idea: Why not use her renowned green thumb to plant a cash crop and pay off her debts? Soon her greenhouse becomes a hot bed of illegal activity – and business starts blooming. But if the buzz gets too big, these budding entrepreneurs just might have to watch their dreams go up in smoke.
Addicted to Sheep Director: Magali Pettier Documentary, 86 mins, Cert PG Kay Hutchinson, Tom Hutchinson, Esme Hutchinson, Jack Hutchinson, Hetty Hutchinson In the North Pennines, tenant farmers Tom and Kay spend their days looking after their flock of prized sheep, and hoping that this will be the year they breed the perfect one. Director Magali Pettier, herself a farmer’s daughter, follows a year in their lives, capturing both the stark, stunning beauty of the landscape, and the brutally hard graft it takes just to survive. Their three children are growing up close to the land, attending a school entirely comprised of farmers’ children, thoroughly immersed in their remote rural world. As the seasons change the couple help birth, groom, nurture and sell their sheep – even when the odds often seems stacked against them. A treat for the senses, Addicted to Sheep allows us to experience life on a hill farm – without having to get mucked in ourselves.

A Walk in the Woods Director: Ken Kwapis Adventure/Comedy/Drama, 104 mins, Cert 15 Robert Redford, Nick Nolte and Emma Thompson Ken Kwapis’ (The Office and Parks and Recreation) delightfully funny adaptation of Bill Bryson's international bestseller. Deciding to hike the notoriously tough Appalachian trail, Bryson (Redford) invites old pal Katz (Nolte), who turns up wheezing and overweight for a trip involving high altitudes, hardy terrain and... bears. Using their journey as a metaphor for the uncertainty of old age, with majestic footage of rural America, it’s a hilarious, touching film with very enjoyable comic turns from Redford, Nolte, Emma Thompson (as Bryson’s wife), Nick Offerman and Kristen Schaal.
Amy Director: Asif Kapadia Documentary/Biography/Music, 123 mins, Cert 15 Amy Winehouse, Mitch Winehouse, Mark Ronson In this powerful biography from Asif Kapadia, the maker of Senna, the formidable talent of Amy Winehouse is laid out for us all to see. The film uses a huge amount of live footage to tell her story, from the early home videos of her difficult childhood through to the glory days, but it is her fragile and selfdeprecating personality that shines through. The final scenes are overwhelming, reducing many of its Cannes première audience to tears. The strength of the film is to make clear the role played in her downfall by a frenzied and ever-hungry media which kept on wanting more. Amy shows us exactly what the world lost when her life ended.
45 Years Director: Andrew Haigh Drama/Romance, 95 mins, Cert 15 Tom Courtenay, Charlotte Rampling, Geraldine James It's just one week before the 45th anniversary party of devoted couple Kate and Geoff (Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay) when he receives a letter out of the blue. The body of his ex-girlfriend has been found perfectly preserved after falling into a glacier in the Swiss Alps 50 years earlier. The emotional fallout of the discovery puts untold strains on their relationship as Geoff lets his mind wander back to the past and Kate finds herself impotent in the face of his grief.
Everest Director: Baltasar Kormákur Adventure/Biography/Drama, 121 mins, Cert 12a Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley, Robin Wright, Clive Standen, Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin Inspired by the incredible true story of the 1996 Everest disaster. In May a group of climbers started ascending the mountain, but were tragically unprepared for an intense blizzard, which enveloped the group and resulted in terrifying catastrophe – Everest’s deadliest day. Documented afterwards by journalist Jon Krakauer (who was part of the party) and the other climbers, the stories of tragedy and survival are brilliantly depicted by Kormákur’s superb ensemble cast in this taut, suspenseful and thrilling drama.
Suite Française Director: Saul Dibb Drama/Romance/War, 107 Mins, Cert 15 Michelle Williams, Kristin Scott Thomas, Margot Robbie The long-awaited film set in occupied France from the classic novel and memoir by Irene Nemirovsky. In the first days of occupation, Lucille is trapped in a stifled existence with her controlling mother-in-law as they both await news of her husband, a prisoner of war. Parisian refugees start to pour into their small town, followed by a regiment of German soldiers who take up residence in the villagers’ own homes. Lucille tries to ignore Bruno von Falk, the handsome and refined German officer staying with them, but soon they are drawn together by a powerful and forbidden love. Kristin Scott Thomas and the always excellent Michelle Williams head the cast, with the ubiquitous Matthias Schoenaerts as von Falk. Great atmosphere and a vivid depiction of life under foreign occupation.

The Walk Director: Robert Zemeckis Adventure/Biography/Drama, 123 Mins, Cert PG Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Charlotte Le Bon, Guillaume Baillargeon Twelve people have walked on the moon, but only one man – Philippe Petit – has ever, or will ever, walk in the immense void between the World Trade Center towers. Guided by his reallife mentor, Papa Rudy, and aided by an unlikely band of international recruits, Petit and his gang overcome long odds, betrayals, dissension and countless close calls to conceive and execute their mad plan. Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Back to the Future, Polar Express and Flight) uses cutting-edge technology in the service of an emotional, character-driven story.
Spy Director: Paul Feig Action/Comedy/Crime, 120 mins, Cert 15 Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Alison Janney, Jude Law Susan Cooper is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency's most dangerous missions. But when her partner falls off the grid and another top agent is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global crisis.
The Martian Director: Ridley Scott Adventure/Drama/Sci-Fi, 144 mins, Cert 12a Matt Damon, Kate Mara, Kristen Wiig, Jessica Chastain, Donald Glover Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Alien) directs Oscarwinner Matt Damon (The Bourne Identity) in this fantastically enjoyable sci-fi thriller with a starstudded cast including Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Damon is astronaut Mark Watney, presumed dead after a fierce storm on Mars. Alone on a hostile planet, he must use all his ingenuity to survive and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive – while, millions of miles away, NASA is working tirelessly to bring ‘the Martian’ home, and his crewmates plot an incredible rescue mission. Reminiscent of Gravity, it’s thrillingly filmed and epic in scale.
Crimson Peak Director: Guillermo del Toro Drama/Fantasy/Horror, 119 mins, Cert 15 Mia Wasiowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunman From Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) comes the hotly awaited Crimson Peak, a gothic thriller with a top-flight cast. Hailed by horror writer Stephen King as “gorgeous and terrifying”, it’s set in Cumbria in the 19th century, in a crumbling mansion where young author Edith Cushing (Wasikowska) falls in love with Sir Thomas Sharpe (Hiddleston). She discovers, after marrying him, that her new husband is not who he seems. A ghost story and a gothic romance, Crimson Peak pays homage to other haunted house films in this very scary, brilliantly atmospheric horror.
