DIRECTORS Robin Harris is director of the NC State Dance Program, where she also serves as artistic director of the NCSU Dance Company, mentors student choreographers, and teaches dance composition. A choreographer of over thirty major works, Robin is a recipient of two NC Arts Council Choreographers Fellowships, the Raleigh Medal of Arts, an Indy Award, and the 2010 NCAAHPERD University Dance Educator Award. Her work has also been recognized by the American Dance Festival, and been presented five times in National Galas of the American College Dance Festival Association, including performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Full evenings of Robin’s work have been presented by NCSU Center Stage and the Southeast Women’s Studies Conference. Additionally, her work has toured four seasons with the North Carolina Dance Festival, and been a featured subject on National Public Radio’s Studio 360. Robin has served as a guest artist at Washington & Lee University, James Madison University, University of Maryland, Hollins University, and Meredith College. She has also choreographed for Burning Coal Theatre Company in Raleigh, including Hair in 2009, Enron in 2011, and Brigadoon in 2012.

Robin choreographed Rent for University Theatre at NC State in 2012.

Robin holds a B.A. in French and an M.A. in dance from The Ohio State University, and has received certification from the Dance Notation Bureau as a Labanotation teacher.

Tara Zaffuto Mullins, Assistant Director of the NC State Dance Program and Artistic Director of Panoramic Dance Project, has a B.A. in Dance from James Madison University and an M.F.A. in Dance from Arizona State University. While at ASU, she received many awards and grants for her research, teaching and choreography including the Faculty Women’s Association Distinguished Masters Degree Candidate Award for her work developing arts programs for homeless youth and the First Herberger College of Fine Arts Fellowship. Tara has taught at Henrico Center for the Arts, Arizona State University, Mesa Community College, St. Catherine’s School, the University of Virginia and most recently was on faculty at the Academy of Arts and Minds in Miami, FL. She has been a guest artist for Radford University, JMU, East Central University among other institutions and companies. Additionally, Tara has choreographed for the Opera Theatre of Northern Virginia, the Latin Ballet of Virginia, Dance Arizona Repertory Theatre and Paradigm Players. Through the years, Tara has performed professionally with a variety of dance companies such as Doug Hamby Dance, Starr Foster Dance Project and the Latin Ballet of Virginia. After serving as the Educational Programs Director for the Latin Ballet of Virginia, Tara developed her own education and service based Z Mullins Dance Company and continues to run such programs as the Virginia Dance Symposium and the Big Gig in Miami.

GUEST ARTISTS Renay Aumiller has presented her dance works in New York City, Chicago, Louisville, Urbana, IL, Kansas City, MO and the Triangle/Triad areas of North Carolina as the Founder/Artistic Director of Renay Aumiller Dances (RAD). Aumiller was the 2011 North Carolina Dance Alliance Choreography Fellow and has had her works selected for Gala performances at the American College Dance Festival. She dances and tours with Lauren Kearns and The Kearns Dance Project, and has performed with numerous choreographers and companies including Renée Wadleigh, Christian Von Howard, and Chicago- based contemporary companies, The Dance Team and Thread Meddle Outfit. Additionally, Aumiller toured Taiwan, Cambodia, and Italy with internationally acclaimed Improvisation master, Kirstie Simson. Aumiller’s education includes earning a BA in Dance Studies from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and an MFA in Choreography from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During her graduate studies, she was awarded the Vannie L. Shiery Scholarship for outstanding performance (2007), Wanda Nettl Prize for Choreography (2008), Hamstrom Award for artistic integrity (2008), and the Pat Knowles Travel Award (2009). She has served as dance faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Beloit College, and currently instructs choreography and technique courses at Elon University and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Ms. Aumiller has enjoyed guest residencies at NC State University, Washington and Lee University, Meredith College, Appalachian State University, Iowa State University, Salem College, NC Governor’s School West, and Enloe Magnet High School. She also teaches regularly at Arts Together in Raleigh, NC.

Claire Porter, www.cportables.com, has performed her work, Claire Porter / PORTABLES, in India, Germany, Holland, England, Latvia, Korea and in the New York City at DTW, Danspace St. Mark’s Church, PS 122, Joe’s Pub, The Kitchen, The Joyce Theater, Joyce SOHO, 92nd St. Y, Town Hall, The Bottom Line, The NY Horticulture Society, Liberty Science Center, and New Jersey Performing Arts Center. PORTABLES has also showcased at American Dance Festival, Lucille Ball Festival of Comedy, Bates Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow, Florida Dance Festival, Kennedy Center, Woolly Mammoth Theater DC, Tampa Bay Off Center Theater, Duncan Theater Palm Beach FL, Center Stage Raleigh NC, The Southern Theater Minneapolis MN, The Yard on Martha’s Vineyard, and others. Porter performed at the opening of the Peter Eisenman Building at the University of Cincinnati, was the hostess-comedienne-scene changer for the Minnesota Composers Forum’s New Music Concert, performed for Mikhail Baryshnikov’s 2009 GALA, set a solo on Kansas City Ballet and performs her Namely, Muscles, recipient of the NYC Fringe Festival 2010’s Overall Excellence Award, at festivals, conferences, theaters, medical schools and universities.

Porter has received several NEA Choreography Fellowships, NJSCA Choreography Fellowships, Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation Awards, Live Music for Dance Award and Commissions from DTW’s First Light Project, The 92nd St Y Harkness Dance Festival, Art Matters, Meet The Composer, VOGUE Magazine, University Dance Companies, and Domino’s Pizza Company.

Porter has an MA in Dance from Ohio State, a BA in Mathematics, is a Laban Movement Analyst, and is represented by PENTACLE/Dance Works NYC.

Marty Baird is a visual artist whose work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, NC Arts Council, United Arts, and the City of Raleigh Arts Commission. She holds a B.A. and M.F.A. in painting and has been an Artist-In-Residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts and at the Vermont Studio Center. Since 1993 Marty has collaborated with Robin Harris on several projects including Key to Paris, Outspoken Dinner Party, Blanche, Dedication, 30 and 73, and Book of Dreams. In 2009 she was one of the artists on The Bain Project, a collaborative installation, in Raleigh’s former water works plant. Marty exhibits her work at The Mahler Gallery in Raleigh and Vision Gallery in Atlantic Beach. She also shows with Devin Borden Gallery in Houston. Marty lives in Raleigh with her husband, Don Ellison, an NCSU physics professor.

Joshua Reeves This will be Joshua’s sixth concert with NCSU Dance Company. Currently he serves at Lighting and Sound designer for NCSU’s University Theatre. – Indulge; Cincinnati Conservatory of Music – Falstaff, La Boheme; Burning Coal – Richard III, 1776; North Shore Music Theatre – The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Cinderella, Manbites Dog – The Goat or who is Sylvia.

Joshua has also served at Assistant Lighting designer at Cincinnati Opera and production electrician for the Alley Theatre. He received his MFA in Lighting Design from the University of Cincinnati.

Megan Marvel, grew up in Raleigh and trained at The Raleigh School of Ballet until moving to Pittsburgh at sixteen to study with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School. Other training included The School of the Atlanta Ballet, and the Houston Ballet Academy. Megan attended NC State University, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1998. She received a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Degree from NCSU in 2004, focusing on psychological motivations of choreography and dance design. While a student at NCSU, she was a member of the NCSU Dance Company under the direction of Robin Harris. Ms. Marvel served as the Assistant Director of the NC State Dance Program from 2001-2006. She has continued to perform and choreograph for the NCSU Dance Company and Robin Harris. Ms. Marvel’s choreographic work has also been performed by Meredith College Dance Theatre and Raleigh Dance Theatre (RDT), and her work was selected by adjudication twice to be performed by RDT at the Southeast Regional Ballet Association Emerging Artist’s Programs.

Megan now serves as the Associate Director of RDT and has served on faculty at The Raleigh School of Ballet since 1998. Megan is also a massage therapist and owns Natural Marvels Massage Therapy in Apex, where she lives with her husband, Rob Cranfill, and their daughter, Jacqueline.

Megan Broders is a freshman planning on majoring in Polymer and Color Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. This is her first year with the NCSU Dance Company. In addition to the dance company, she is a part of the University Honors Program and is a Goodnight Scholar. Megan has been dancing since the age of four at Dance Dynamics Inc. in Wake Forest, NC. McKenna Czap is a sophomore majoring in Media Communication and minoring in Film Studies. She also is a radio DJ at WKNC-Raleigh and participates in the NCSU Film Society. She has been dancing since the age of three at Cary Ballet Conservatory, where she has been part of both the Cary Ballet Company and 3D Jazz Company. This is her first year being part of the NCSU Dance Company. In addition to dance, she loves her family, friends, cats, and running.

Laura Davies is a freshman studying Business Administration at NC State.

She has been dancing since the age of 6 at Arts Together, North Carolina Dance Institute, and Broughton High School. She has been a member of the Rainbow Dance Company at Art’s Together, and a member of the Broughton Dance Company and Dance Team. This is her first year in the NCSU Dance Company, and she is excited to be part of such a great company.

STUDENTS (cont) Hayley Dirscherl is a fourth year graduate student working toward her PhD in biomedical engineering. She attended Columbia University for her undergraduate studies where she was captain of the Columbia University Dance Team. Before that she danced for twelve years under the instruction of Patricia McNally in Dunedin, FL. She would like to thank her amazing family, friends, and boyfriend for their continuous support!

Neelam Patel is a sophomore studying Biology with a concentration in Human Biology. Neelam is a member of Alpha Delta Pi, was Wake County’s Junior Miss in 2010, and is also the captain and founder of Nazaaré at NCSU, a new fusion Bollywood team. This is her first year as a member of the NCSU Dance Company. Neelam has studied and learned dance since the age of 3 from her mother, Cary Ballet Conservatory, Payal Dance Academy, Governor’s School West, and Enloe High School. In addition to dancing with the company, Neelam also loves her family, friends, baking, and reading.

Angela Petrongelli is a freshman in the Scholars Program. This is her first year in the company. She has studied dance at Lady’s Island Middle School, Beaufort High School, Richlands High School, and Dance Theater of Jacksonville. At the Dupree Dance Convention in Chicago she received a scholarship to return to the convention and her solo “His Great Promise” won a diamond award and 3rd overall at the competition. Besides her old high school’s biannual dance shows she has performed in the Beaufort Gala Festival, the South Carolina Dance Festival, and at the officer’s club on Parris Island, SC. In addition to dance, she loves her family, friends, animals, traveling and God. She would like to thank God for always standing by her side and guiding her path, all praise goes to Him! Agee Taylor is a junior studying Fashion and Textile Management with a concentration in Fashion Development and Product Management.

Agee is the recipient of the North Carolina Textile Foundation First Union Scholarship. This is her third year as a member of the NCSU Dance Company. Agee has studied dance at Arts Together, Raleigh School of Ballet, American Dance Projekt and Broughton High School.

In addition to dancing with the company, Agee is also a member of Phi Psi Textile Fraternity, Models For Charity, and works as a consultant at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Holley Holmes is a freshman from Asheville, North Carolina currently in the First Year College Program at NCSU. She began dancing at Asheville Dance Theater when she was 2 years old and since became a member of their competition team and won overall adjudicated awards for several group and individual performances as well as had the opportunity to study dance with groups such as the Atlanta Ballet and The Pulse on Tour, and Dance Masters of America. Holley is very grateful to all of her dance mentors, specifically, Cheryl Whitworth, Tonia Freeman, Dathan Brannon, and Hayes Robinson, as well as her family for their continuous love and support.

Ashley Walls White is a graduate student pursuing a Master Degree in mathematics, and this is her sixth year in the company. Ashley has created eight choreographic works during her time in the company, two of which were selected to be performed in regional galas at the American College Dance Festival’s Mid-Atlantic conference, Three Nurses in 2012 and “but today they’re all gone”-Mr. Davis in 2010. “but today they’re all gone”– Mr. Davis was first alternate to go to the ACDFA national gala. Ashley is the artistic director of the AWW Performance Company, a Raleigh based modern dance company, founded in 2012. She would like to thank her husband, Zakk White, for his explicit collaboration, and non-explicit support in all her artistic endeavors.

Lara Funke is a sophomore majoring in Textile Technology and Art+Design through the Anni Albers Scholars program. This is her first year with the NCSU Dance Company. Lara studied dance at the North Carolina Dance Institute and through Enloe High School theatre productions. Lara also participates in Reformed University Fellowship and the University Scholars Program. She enjoys crafts, coffee, and adventure.

Jacquelyn Watson is a sophomore majoring in Nutrition Science and minoring in Sports Science. This is her second year in the NCSU Dance Company. She has been dancing since the age of 3 at Leslie’s Dance Academy in Fayetteville, NC. She is also involved in Sigma Alpha Omega Christian Sorority at NC State.

Mozart – Overture to La Clemenza di Tito

Today’s program is a juxtaposition of older, established repertoire (two works by Mozart) with two adventuresome works from the 20th century (Webern and Lutoslawski). Webern’s works were condemned as “Degenerate” by the Nazis, and no matter how influential among post-war composers, they were still viewed as difficult for the untutored listener.

The opera La Clemenza di Tito (Clemency of Titus), completed in 1791, was composed right after the Magic Flute and was Mozart’s final opera (and one of his last works). It was commissioned for the coronation of emperor Leopold II in Prague, and influential in Mozart’s continual reputation as a composer for opera.

Webern’s passion for concise statement is taken up by in part by Witold Lutoslawski, and the “difficult music” status continues through Lutoslawski’s works of the late 20th century.

The overture, heard today, introduces the opera as serious (opera seria).

A driving syncopated motive heard soon relates it to other of Mozart’s “tragic” works such as the Prague Symphony on today’s program.

One question raised by this juxtaposition is the composer’s desire to produce works which are enjoyed and savored both by the untutored listener and the connoisseur. Mozart operates well in this domain; Lutoslawski (whose centennial we celebrate this year) strives also for this in his works.

The term ‘entartete’ [degenerate] was coined in the 19th century by the doctor and criminologist Cesare Lombroso with reference to an abnormal condition akin to moral and spiritual deterioration. Adopted by the Nazis during the 1920s, it became a loosely defined technical concept with which to condemn modern culture that, according to Hitler, manifested symptoms of national decline. Thus atonal music, jazz and above all works by Jewish composers were branded as ‘degenerate’...” (Erik Levi. “Entartete Musik.”

Webern, Schoenberg’s first student, was not just infatuated with atonal music (thus “degenerate” in prevailing tastes), but was among the first composers to adopt the structured atonality of serial (12-tone) music.

In fact, the long period of composition of the Concerto (several years) reflects Webern’s strong interest in the symmetry that may be had in serialism. He had a strong realization that this work lent itself to a “symmetrical perfection.”

How can this be manifest in the 12 notes, the pitches of serialism?

Whether all the intricacies are heard by the listener, what is clearly perceived is a sonic journey to a new, highly ordered world – one of clarity, brevity, concision, and attention to detail that can be truly breathtaking; in short, concise elegance in sound.

Lutoslawski – Chain I (1983) If Webern’s work represents “degenerate music” in the mid-20th-century, Lutoslawski’s represent the continuation in recent decades of the “difficult music” tradition – challenging for the listener as well as well as the performers.

Challenging, but highly rewarding. The mysteries of Lutoslawski’s works may not be readily apparent, but his music is highly dramatic and human.

Here in Chain I, Lutoslawski has worked with two different kinds of musical time – time that progresses in a measured way and free time that moves without a specific beat – a freedom learned from listening to John Cage.

In Chain I he invents technique of form in which beginnings and ends of sections overlap and interlock like links in a chain. Written for the London Sinfonietta, Chain I begins a series of successful works in the ’80 such as Chain II (a violin concerto) and Chain III for full orchestra (each of these I have had the pleasure of conducting).

This year is the centennial of Witold Lutoslawski’s birth. As a Polish composer, he endured years of Soviet control of all the arts, and some compositions bear the stamp of socialist realism, the awakenings of perestroika,

and the openness of the late 20th century. Most of all, Lutoslawski’s music since the 1960’s, like Chain I, is highly inventive, dramatic, and human.

The pieces all move in scenarios that reflect our inner and outer life and contain instrumental solos that mirror human nature itself.

Mozart – Symphony no. 35 in D (Haffner) The work we now know as Symphony no. 35 began as party music – a collection of celebratory pieces for a wedding of “friends of the family” (the Haffners) in Mozart’s former town of Salzburg, in 1782. The commission came at a hectic time for Mozart, as he was preparing for his own marriage, supervising the performance of the opera Abduction from the Seraglio, and completing other commissions. But he worked overnights and finished six movements including a march and two minuets, and sent them off to his father in Salzburg for copying.

The next year, Mozart requested the music back from his father for performance in Vienna. He worked to convert the party music to a formal symphony, adding a few additional instruments, deleting two dance movements, and performing minor revisions. Minor, because the party music was in many ways sufficient to meet the expectations of symphonic writing in substance, development of ideas, and display of orchestral technique.

The remarkable opening movement begins with an angular theme, forte in octaves for full orchestra including woodwinds, brass and timpani.

The theme is notable for its wide leaps, sharp rhythms, assertive trills, and silences – certainly festive enough for a wedding. But it is also substantive enough to be the sole subject of an extended essay. And that is the most remarkable aspect of the opening movement – this theme is present at virtually every turn, either the foreground or lurking in the background in inner voices.

grains of time

For more than four decades, the Grains of Time have been a part of NC State’s campus life. Performing a wide variety of music with the use of just a few men’s voices, the group remains one of a kind when compared to most collegiate a cappella groups. They work to bridge contemporary a cappella with that of professional groups all while creating a performance style that lends itself to both excellent musicianship and showmanship.

Songs in their repertoire are drawn from many different genres and appeal to audience members of all ages.

Though the Grains of Time are a part of the Music Department and are styled as the University’s premiere men’s a cappella group, they are a student run organization with guidance from Andy Beck who serves the faculty advisor and vocal coach.

The Grains of Time perform at a number of NCSU events and hold on-campus concerts each semester. They also perform at a wide variety of functions off campus throughout the year ranging from a cappella festivals, weddings, and even Ram Roast!

This year, inspired by North Carolina State University’s recently concluded 125th anniversary celebration, the FRIENDS of ARTS NC STATE Board of Advisors is extraordinarily pleased to award the Bowers Medal of Arts to the NC State Student Body.

TheatreFest OPENS MAY 30 TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW!

Presented with grant support from the City of Raleigh Arts Commission, this summer’s season opens with Daddy’s Dyin’ Who’s Got the Will by Del Shores, directed by University Theatre assistant director Allison Bergman. The Turnover family of Lowake, Texas is trying to settle Buford Turnover’s affairs before he kicks the bucket. Buford has misplaced his will, and his four dysfunctional children are eager to find it.

The powerful, poignant, hilarious and too-familiar moments are the true magic of family.

Opening June 6 is Murder at the Howard Johnson’s, directed by University Theatre acting coach and instructor Rachel Klem, who is also owner and producer at Common Ground Theatre in Durham.

Self-absorbed Arlene is married to blundering car salesman Paul, who adores her. Arlene’s dentist lover Mitchell joins her to plot the murder of her husband. But a betrayal shifts the alliances − and the intended victim.

The target keeps changing in this rambunctious suspense comedy.

Just about the time everyone’s wrapping up the spring semester and planning for summer, the staff at University Theatre is gearing up for a whirlwind month-long project: the three-show repertory theatre productions of TheatreFest.

“With the exception of the years we were undergoing renovation at Thompson Hall, we’ve been doing the summer shows since 1991,” said theatre director John McIlwee. Starting on Thursday, May 30 and running through Sunday, June 30, the shows are a popular introduction to what NC State offers the community in theatre arts.

“TheatreFest is a time when University Theatre students have the opportunity to work with great area artists to bring delightful plays to kick off summer and possibly even earn class credit,” McIlwee said.

“For TheatreFest we choose shows that have broad appeal, so new patrons will have an enjoyable outing that shows them how easy it is to access the arts at NC State. Our theatre program has a loyal community following, many of whom found us though TheatreFest, and who then come back to support our talented students during the year.”

Finishing the season is Agatha Christie’s Black Coffee, directed by John McIlwee. This little known mystery will surprise and delight Christie fans with many wonderful twists and turns in true Christie tradition. Noted atomic scientist Sir Claud Amory, on the eve of dispatching his formula for a powerful new explosive to the Ministry of Defense, realizes that someone in his family circle has filched the information from his safe. Sir Claud assembles the suspects in hopes of extracting the truth, and Hercule Poirot and Captain Hastings arrive at the height of this inquiry. Look for some well-known faces such as community actors Lynda Clark, David Ring, Tim Caudle, Danny Norris, Joanne Dickinson and Sandi Sullivan, as well as NC State student Leanna Hall, and Dr. Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf, professor at NC State’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

“TheatreFest actually kicks off our fall season of student shows, because we use this unique series to promote the upcoming season with special season ticket promotions. It’s a great summer event for the community as well as the students who are here for summer school. And we keep it at such a bargain price there’s no excuse to miss it!” McIlwee said.
