On Wednesday, October 12, 2016, the Department of Dramatic Arts hosted the premier of a drama performance based on M.R. Kukrit Pramoj’s famous series of short stories, Lai Chiwit ‘Many Lives’. Lai Chiwit is the adaptation of Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize winning, The Bridge of San Luis Rey which tells a story of several people from different origins whose lives ended in one freak accident. Written in 1954, Lai Chiwit was presented in a form of 11 short stories portraying the lives of 11 victims of a tragic shuttle boat accident. Instead of playing 11 separate stories, the playwright, Parida Manomaiphibul, strategically collapsed the short stories into one well-crafted drama randomly depicting brief sequences of each of the 11 lives. Such approach to the VWRULHV UHÀHFWHG WKH IDFW WKDW WKH\ WRRN SODFH LQ WKH VDPH WLPH IUDPH ZKLFK eventually leads to a single endpoint. The tactful method of presentation kept the audience glued to their seats to follow the 3 hour 30 minute play. As the set is located in the center of the auditorium, it offers the audience who were seated on the different sides of the theatre different viewing experiences with the help of the impeccable lighting technique by Supatra Kruakrongsuk. With the design of Ritirong Jiwakanon, different characters came to life with the retro themed costumes and settings echoing the period of the stories. Finally, the whole production wouldn’t have been as perfect as it was without the direction of Bhanbassa Thuepthien who impressively orchestrated both the professional and amateur actors to represent the 11 victims and those involved in their lives. The premier was warmly welcomed by not only the University students and staff but also the public, including celebrities in the area of dramatic arts such as Surapol Virulak, Lalita Chantasartkosol, and Yingyos Panya. On Thursday, October 4, 2019, the faculty staff from the Spanish Section were invited to the opening ceremony of Urban Patterns, an art exhibition at Bangkok Art and Culture Center. Hosted by the Embassy of Mexico in Thailand, "Urban Patterns" showcases the work by Paloma Torres, a renowned Mexican artist and a professor of art history and graphic design at Iberoamericana University, Mexico City. Created and developed in Guadalajara, Oaxaca and Mexico City, the “Urban Patterns” exhibits consist of a series of textiles made with various techniques inspired by an aerial photograph series of Mexico City and its suburbs. The resonance of the urban setting arises from Torres’ concern that “all city spaces shape the spirit of their citizens”. She wishes to create awareness of the contamination the urban dwellers are facing whether they be sight, sound, or smell. Among the guests were the Ambassador of Brazil, Gilberto Fonseca Guimaraes de Moura, the Ambassador of Colombia, Andelfo García, and the Ambassador of Panama, María del Carmen Martínez Arosemena. The exhibition will last until October 23, 2016. For more information, please contact the Embassy of Mexico in Thailand or log on to Facebook page embamextai, palomatorres. com, http://en.bacc.or.th, and https://embamex2.sre.gob.mx/ tailandia002F.

The seminar went on to brainstorm on how to improve the BALAC program in relation to the four strategic goals of the university. The university aims to produce gradu-

ates who are highly knowledgeable and equipped with up-to-date skills, as well as having had community service and leadership experience. It also seeks to create new knowledge that is part of both teaching and research projects, DQG WR UDLVH WKH UHVHDUFK SUR¿OH RI WKH university. These goals will combine to contribute to the sustainable development of the country, so that Chulalongkorn University remains the top university in Thailand while it helps Thailand to develop in a way that is both locally relevant and globally recognized. The University’s four goals include: 1) improving the working capacities of its staff and students, 2) advancing the university’s innovation and research, and 3) using local engagement and 4) global engagement to transform the university’s place in the Kingdom and internationally. Aj. Surapeepan asked those present to brainstorm about ways that the BALAC Program could help the Faculty and the

university move toward achieving these goals. )RU WKH ÂżUVW VWUDWHJLF JRDO RI LPSURYLQJ the capacities of the staff and the BALAC program, greater use of digital communication was suggested. For the second strategic goal, the Faculty is interested in promoting its publications WR UDLVH LWV UHVHDUFK SURÂżOH QDWLRQDOO\ DQG internationally. BALAC Ajarns were expected to be working on research projects. Each Ajarn discussed the research that was done and discussed a bit about the ongoing or new research projects. For the third strategic goal of the university, one priority that was stressed in the Faculty of the Arts was establishing more outreach programs to the local community, as part of its service to the local area. Aj Surapeepan asked everyone to suggest how the BALAC Program could more actively engage the wider community beyond the classroom and the university. Ajarns present suggested special tailor-made FRXUVHV DQG ZRUNVKRSV WR IXOÂżOO WKLV SULRULW\ of the Faculty, as well as occasional evening public courses. These events could also collect some small fee from the public to pay for the lecturers (with 1000 baht per hour minimum given as the typical evening payment). As examples of this, Aj. Duantem said that the Japanese Section of the Faculty had been thinking of various types of short courses or workshops to teaching practical forms of Japanese to the wider community outside Chulalongkorn University. Aj Blanca suggested that she could arrange to teach practical Spanish to people who may work with Spanish tour groups or with companies with ties to Spanish-speaking areas of the world. Aj. Ingo suggested teaching weekend workshops on various practical aspects of English for tourism or business could be possible, tied to English-speaking embassies or companies where English was important for communication. A bit off the track, Aj Ingo also suggested, based on a request from the English Department who is responsible for teaching

3 courses for BALAC students, to offer an DGGLWLRQDO VHFWLRQ HDFK VHPHVWHU IRU ÂżUVW year BALAC students, to decrease the size of the current classes from 4 sections of 25 students to 5 sections of 20. This would allow BALAC students to get more attention and better their reading, writing and research skills. The meeting agreed with the proposal of the English Department and will divide the BALAC students into 5 sections instead of 4 sections. Other suggestions for community engagement included offering short courses in English on media, global culture, or OLWHUDWXUH RU SHUKDSV D ÂżOP VHULHV 7KHVH could also be offered on weekends, both WR EURDGHQ WKH XQGHUVWDQGLQJ RI ÂżOP DQG WR WHDFK WKH EDVLFV RI ÂżOP DQDO\VLV Other options discussed were offering some workshops on basic research skills that catered to different groups, such as graduate students in the Faculty or the university, or catering to those who needed to do research for companies or consulting ÂżUPV so they could learn about available sources and how to collect, arrange and analyze various textual and visual materials. Some Ajarns spoke about bringing in experts from outside the university to speak with their classes in order to connect the education with the Bangkok community. Embassy representatives had come to French and Spanish classes and, vice versa, BALAC students had gone to Embassies. Some BALAC Ajarns invite outside experts in performance, visual arts, PXVLF DQG ÂżOP WR VSHDN WR FODVVHV LQ 0XVLF and Culture, Visual Cultures, and Contemporary Asian Cultures, while other classes had gone out to local resources and centers of expertise such as the Museum Siam, Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall and the BACC, as well as to chefs at restaurants, to

the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School, and to the Sra Pratum Palace to observe food culture. These are examples of some activities attached to the classes offered at BALAC for our students to learn from outside of the classroom and get in touch with the movers and shakers of the society. And these activities get budget from the Program. These kinds of activities helped to join education to the wider community of experts and real-world experiences in Bangkok. Aj. Lowell said that he would propose a new course at the next BALAC Board meeting for foreign exchange students to take, since a number of them were asked or required to take classes on Thailand or Southeast Asia as part of their exchange program and few courses available. For the fourth goal of becoming a sustainable university with international recognition, some suggestions arose about PRUH HIÂżFLHQW XVH RI SDSHU DQG UHF\FOLQJ paper for some classroom purposes or raising the temperature of the room so that less air conditioning and therefore less electricity was used. There was a desire to recruit more international students, aiming for the 10% full-time foreign student goal for the university. Recruiting more foreign faculty would also help improve the program. There was a discussion of having a dual degree option with another international university, but arranging that ZRXOG WDNH VRPH WLPH DIWHU ÂżQGLQJ D SDUWQHU university. Aj. Lowell again recommended opening an internship program so that students could get both credit and real-world experience before they graduated. After the seminar was complete, those attending the seminar took a photograph and parted around 8:30 PM.

+XQJDU\ LQ *OREDO 'LSORPDF\ DQG WKH )XWXUH RI (XURSH On Thursday 13 October 2016, Chulalongkorn University hosted a visit from His Excellency Mr PĂŠter SzijjĂĄrtĂł, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, who gave a special lecture entitled “Hungary in Global Diplomacy and the Future of Europeâ€?. In this lecture, the Minister addressed Hungary’s current situation and the challenges which Europe is facing in terms of politics and economics, namely, territory disputes, energy security issues, integration issues, economic challenges, and the challenges of mass migration.

The last challenge which raised questions from the audience was Hungary’s recent referendum and anti-refugee propaganda, and their responsibilities as an EU member state, since Hungary has signed the Dublin Regulation making them responsible for examining the applications of asylum seekers entering their borders. The actions of Hungary’s rightwing government had been criticised by other EU member states and other organisations due to their treatment of refugees, and Prime Minister Viktor OrbĂĄn had been accused of xenophobia. On 2 October 2016, the Hungarian government held a referendum regarding the EU refugee quota to resettle refugees in various EU member states. Hungary had built a fence across their Serbian and Croatian borders, and so far had not accepted a single refugee the EU seek to relocate. 98% of those who voted were against the EU’s plan, but the question “Do you want the European Union to be able to mandate the obligatory resettlement of non-Hungarian citizens into Hungary even without the approval of the National Assembly?" was criticised for being designed to elicit a “noâ€? response from voters. Despite the turnout not reaching the 50% required for the result to be valid, Prime Minister OrbĂĄn nevertheless took the matter to parliament. His Excellency Mr SzijjĂĄrtĂł, graciously adGUHVVLQJ DOO FKDOOHQJLQJ TXHVWLRQV DQG FRPPHQWV SUHVHQWHG WR KLP DW WKH OHFWXUH MXVWLÂżHG his government’s actions by saying that it was an attempt to protect European borders and Hungary’s sovereignty. However, while the issue of mass migration in Europe remains in question, the Hungarian government’s anti-migration discourse and problematic action is nonetheless a cause for concern.
