Project 1 by ArtPrize Visitor Guide

JOIN US AT PROJECT 1 BY ARTPRIZE ArtPrize presents Project 1: Crossed Lines, a citywide public art exhibition about what it means to belong. Step into three Grand Rapids neighborhoods to explore spectacular art installations, public events, community-oriented projects and performances. Project 1 is built with you in mind and is a public art exhibition that’s only complete when you take part. The commissioned artworks are not just objects for contemplation, instead they’re spaces for action, play and belonging. This is an exhibition that invites you to question what it means to belong in a city. Belonging is more

than an idea, it’s a state of being. Project 1 is here for you to sew fabric that will wrap a building, sing a song from a rooftop, send a message across the Grand River, ride your bike, dance the night away and consider the way divided cities can become whole. Project 1 is composed of a series of installations across the city, each one activated by many one-timeonly performances. Be sure to attend Saturday events at each site throughout September and don’t miss the myriad of performances, exhibitions and other programming presented by our cultural partners throughout the city.

project.artprize.org

The artists featured in Project 1 are creating objects and spaces that are completed by community involvement and interaction. By asking artists to alter public spaces temporarily and create new ones, this exhibition explores how and for whom the city is made. It exists to show how art can help transform cities into places where we all belong. ArtPrize is evolving and we’re thrilled to welcome you to this next stage. We hope you’ll find yourself delighted, challenged and inspired.

ARTISTS Grand Rapids has a rich history of public art defining and enhancing civic space, yet still faces difficult questions about access and boundaries. We invited five world-renowned artists to consider how lines, both visible and invisible, affect our sense of belonging.

The Boom and the Bust DOWNTOWN Jeyifous’ work in public art, installation, drawing, collage and design explores the past and potential futures of urban environments. For Project 1, he created The Boom and the Bust– a monumental sculpture referencing the historic and contemporary challenges of housing discrimination. This abstracted multi-story sculpture rises 25-feet from the ground at the corner of Louis St and Monroe Ave. By combining references to skyscrapers and single-family houses, it reflects the juxtaposition between large-scale downtown development happening alongside foreclosures and displacement. Jeyifous’ work is underwritten by Frey Foundation.

Voice Bridge DOWNTOWN Lozano-Hemmer develops interactive installations that live at the intersection of architecture and performance art. For Project 1, Rafael created a new sitespecific installation called Voice Bridge. Along the handrails of Grand Rapids’ iconic Blue Bridge, a pedestrian bridge which connects the East and West sides of downtown, you’ll find speakers and 400+ lights that shine on the footpath of the bridge. You control the intensity of each light by speaking into the intercoms at each end of the bridge and recording a message. Once recorded, your message will play back as a loop– jumping from speaker to speaker across the bridge as more messages are recorded. Lozano-Hemmer’s work is underwritten by Downtown Grand Rapids Inc.

The Oracle of the Soulmates DOWNTOWN & MLK PARK Hart creates submerged rooftops that look like they were dropped from the sky. The rooftops refer to home, stability or shelter. Hart speaks about the rooftops as thresholds between public and private space. Combined with family and oral histories, and activated by performance, her work explores the power these thresholds have in our lives, and become stages from which power can be reclaimed. For Project 1, Hart created The Oracle of the Soulmates–twin rooftop sculptures, one in the center of Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids, the other in the lawn of Martin Luther King Jr. Park on the southeast side. Hart’s work is underwritten by Herman Miller Cares.

Critical Infrastructure TANGLEFOOT Amenta and Lott, known for their history of wide-ranging collaborative artistic productions with SiTE:LAB, present Critical Infrastructure – a sitespecific architectural intervention at the landmark Tanglefoot building, a fly paper factory that now holds artist studios. In collaboration with DisArt, the intervention creates an environment that addresses issues of accessibility in both form and function. The project reimagines the site by temporarily transforming a private space into a fully accessible public space, through a series of ramps and landings which welcome visitors and a wide variety of performances and interventions by other artists. Throughout Project 1, it will serve as an armature, facilitating dynamic programming and community engagement.

Kaleidoscopic DOWNTOWN, TANGLEFOOT & MLK PARK Browder creates large-scale, vibrant fabric installations–turning building exteriors and other public sites into multi-colored sculptures. Community participation is essential to her work. Throughout the spring and summer, volunteers came together in support of her work by donating colorful fabric and sewing alongside her. Through this community involvement, Browder looks to give a voice to the citizens of Grand Rapids and blur the division between audience and artist. The largest section of Kaleidoscopic is draped over the community center building in MLK Park. You can also see her work on four skywalks in the heart of downtown and the facade of a building at Tanglefoot. Browder’s work is underwritten by X-Rite and Pantone.

GETTING AROUND Project 1 exists in three locations around Grand Rapids.

Project 1: Crossed Lines focuses on how boundaries, both visible and invisible, impact our sense of belonging in a city. The installations at each site are meant to connect the city’s three wards and explore their divergent histories, contemporary challenges and unique communities.

Transportation Utilizing the city’s public transport system is a great way to explore all three site locations. This option reduces your carbon footprint and is a fun way to explore the city! Thanks to our city partners Mobile GR and The Rapid. Ride the Rapid Purchase a Wave Card and find a full route schedule and map at ridetherapid.org. Travel from Rapid Central Station to each site by following the routes mentioned to the right of each map location. Catch A Ride With limited parking options, using a rideshare is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to get around Project 1. Rideshares include Uber, Lyft and taxi services.

Project 1 Honda Hoppers Look for the Honda Hopper presented by West Michigan Honda Dealers. Catch a free Hopper between our Project 1 sites from 12–6p each Saturday in September. Ride A Bike Get active and have an art adventure on your bike! In partnership with Mobile GR, we designed a bike route between sites (project.artprize.org/ pedal-project-1). Don’t forget to join us for Pedal Project 1 on Sept 21 for a city bike ride to each location. Driving Your Car Planning ahead will help you navigate parking during events. A variety of free and paid parking options are within walking distance of each site location. When you can, please consider carpooling. School and Charter Buses There are transportation grants available to educators to help offset transportation costs to Project 1. For more information, contact education@artprize.org.

Accessibility The ArtPrize organization strives to connect visitors of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to the world of art. We believe the most captivating conversations happen when our audience reflects the true diversity of our community. We invite you to give us feedback that we will take into consideration when planning future events. Contact becca@artprize.org. Care Granted, a leader in the home healthcare space, is providing free curated tours of Project 1 for people with mobility challenges. Accessible transportation will be provided to ensure guests of all mobility levels can comfortably tour the exhibition. Virtual 3D tours will be available of the exhibition for those who may not be able to physically visit the sites. DisArt created audio descriptions for those with a visual impairment. Through verbal descriptions this guide will share the experience of Project 1 as an audio tour. Public event assistance, including ASL interpretation and wheelchair rentals, and the above tours will be available by contacting events@artprize.org.

MLK PARK

900 Fuller Ave SE Located in a residential neighborhood on the southeast side of the city, MLK Park features works by artists Amanda Browder and Heather Hart. Browder wrapped the exterior of the community lodge with a vibrant, multi-colored textile piece– created with the help of local donations and volunteers. Hart installed a sculpture in the park that mimics the roof of a house that appears to sink into the lawn. Visitors will be able to climb on the roof and enter the attic, and the roof will serve as a stage for local music, dance, spoken word and other community events. We selected MLK Park as a Project 1 site in collaboration with community members, city officials and the artists. Visitor Kiosk Hours Open during official events

TANGLEFOOT

314 Straight Ave SW An architectural intervention by artist Paul Amenta and architect Ted Lott, as well as a work by Amanda Browder, can be viewed at Tanglefoot. This industrial campus is named after a flypaper manufacturer. For the last several decades, it has been home to artist studios. This rich creative history led Amenta and Lott to the site. Together they built a platform for the creative experimentation of other artists, both figuratively and literally. Participation and collaboration are essential to their work. For Project 1, they created a structure that responds to the existing architecture of the space by filling a partial courtyard with an accessible pavilion. Audiences and performers will occupy the new structure throughout the exhibition. Visitor Kiosk Hours Exhibition Hours Open during official events Mon–Sat 12p–6p Sun 12p–8p Ride the Rapid Take Route 18 to Butterworth & Straight stop #7992.
