È il 1959 quando Gencay Kasapçi giunge in Italia. Giovane studentessa, appena diplomata all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Istanbul, probabilmente Gencay non avrebbe mai immaginato quanto questa esperienza italiana l’avrebbe cambiata, trasformandola in una delle più raffinate interpreti del clima modernista che scuoteva in quegli anni l’Europa. Dopo un breve periodo trascorso a Firenze, Gencay decide di spostarsi a Roma, dove si ferma per quasi un decennio, fino al 1968, anno del suo ritorno definitivo in Turchia. E la Capitale, città cosmopolita, così ricca di stimoli e opportunità per una giovane artista, si mostra subito pronta ad accoglierla. Un clima di positività permeava la società italiana. Erano gli anni del boom economico, della FIAT 600 prodotta nel nuovo stabilimento di Mirafiori, dell’ENI di Enrico Mattei, delle grandi aziende italiane di elettrodomestici. Ed erano gli anni d’oro di Cinecittà.

Non si può dimenticare che quella che ha conosciuto Gencay, era la Roma dei divi di Hollywood e della Dolce Vita. Era la Roma che si lasciava alle spalle le asprezze del Neorealismo e iniziava a sognare con il cinema di Michelangelo Antonioni e di Federico Fellini. All’intimismo e alle poetiche crepuscolari ora si contrapponevano le arditezze del Gruppo ‘63, deciso assertore di una letteratura e un’arte che celebrasse il progresso industriale e l’avvento della società di massa. Di lì a poco questa crescita economica e culturale avrebbe invertito la tendenza per trasformarsi, a fine decennio, in quel lungo periodo di conflittualità sociale che ha portato il nostro Paese sull’orlo della guerra civile. Ma in quel momento, nessuna ombra era concessa a questo diffuso sentimento di ottimismo. L’Italia degli anni Sessanta, era un Paese che si organizzava su nuovi modelli di lavoro collettivo imposti dallo sviluppo tecnologico e industriale; la protesta e la sfiducia del singolo, così come 6

It was 1959 when Gencay Kasapçı first arrived in Italy. As a young student, just graduated from the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, Gencay, had probably never imagined how much this Italian experience would have changed her; transforming her to one of the most sophisticated interpreters of the modernist climate that was shaking the Europe of those years. After a short time in Florence, Gencay decides to move to Rome, where she stays almost ten years, until 1968, the year in which she returns definitively to Turkey.

And the Capital, the cosmopolitan city full of inspiration and opportunity for a young artist, reveals itself ready to welcome her. Those were the years of economic boom, of the FIAT 600 manufactured in the new plants of Mirafiori, of Enrico Mattei’s ENI, of the big Italian companies of household appliances.

And they were the golden years of Cinecittà. Not to mention the Gencay’s experience of Rome of Hollywood and Dolce Vita divas. It was the City which had left the brutality of the new realism behind her shoulders and had begun to dream with the Michelangelo Antonioni’s and Federico Fellini’s cinemas. The intimism and the poetic Crepuscolari were now challenged by the tenacity of Gruppo ’63, a determinant promoter of a literature and art that would celebrate the industrial progress and the beginning of a mass society. Soon this economic and cultural growth would have inverted, and at the end of the decade, turning into a social conflict which led our country almost to the edge of a civil war. But at that moment, no shadow on this widespread feeling was allowed. Italy of the Sixties, was a country that was organizing herself on new models of collective work imposed by technological and industrial development. The protest and mistrust of the individual or any form of individualism were not a socially accepted behaviors

ogni forma di individualismo non erano più comportamenti socialmente accettati. L’autoesclusione dalla società moderna era ritenuta destinata al fallimento. E anche tra gli artisti si seguiva questo modello corporativo e si creavano gruppi e alleanze. La socializzazione divenne elemento fondamentale nell’esperienza creativa. L’obiettivo era superare l’impasse dell’informale – corrente per vocazione intimista e individualista – risolto attraverso una spersonalizzazione del soggetto creatore che poteva essere raggiunta in vari modi ma principalmente scegliendo o la strada delle emergenti poetiche neo oggettuali, per esempio proponendo una riproduzione meccanica dell’oggetto senza alcun intervento autoriale riconoscibile come suggeriva la pop art nella sua accezione americana, oppure continuando sulla via dell’astrazione, basandosi però su escamotage capaci di privare il gesto pittorico di ogni “sentimentalismo”. Una soluzione era data dalla reiterazione ossessiva di un principio compositivo e formale nella realizzazione del lavoro che conduceva la pittura verso esiti gestaltici o optical, oppure scegliendo complicate regole matematiche o dinamismi meccanici, come suggerivano le nuove correnti programmate e cinetiche. La convivenza tra queste due tendenze non era priva di polemiche e contestazioni. Celebri quelle sorte in occasione della IV Biennale di San Marino (1963) e della successiva Biennale veneziana del 1964. Ma tornando alla Roma di Gencay, i pop si riunivano attorno alla galleria La Tartaruga di Plino De Martiis, dando vita alla Scuola di Piazza del Popolo; i sostenitori delle teorie gestaltiche, trovarono invece in Carlo Giulio Argan un punto fermo imprescindibile, critico promotore del Gruppo 1. Senza dimenticare che l’ambiente culturale della Capitale subiva anche l’influenza delle nuove correnti che arrivavano da Milano, quella di Azimut in testa, dove la connessione con le nuove Avanguardie europee era decisamente più salda. Sarà, però, Roma a ospitare la prima mostra in Italia di Zero, organizzata alla galleria La Salita di Gian Tommaso Liverani, dal titolo Mack + Klein + Piene + Uecker + Lo Savio = 0. Nell’ottobre del 1962 arriva anche l’Arte Programmata teorizzata da Bruno Munari e Umberto Eco (1962) presentata prima a Milano, in maggio, nello Spazio Olivetti di via Vittorio Emanuele. Cruciale, in quegli anni, anche la presenza in città di un autore come Nobuya Abe, in continuo dialogo con i colleghi milanesi – Manzoni e Fontana in primis – ed europei, ai quali forniva il confronto con la nuova avan-

The self-exclusion of modern society was thought to be destined to fail. And even among the artists this corporate model was followed and groups and alliances were created. Socialization became a fundamental element in creative experience.

The goal was to overcome the impasse of the informal - intimistic and individualistic current - by depersonalizing the creator in many ways, but mainly by choosing the emerging new poetic objects, for example by proposing a mechanical reproduction of the object without any recognizable intervention from the author as suggested by American pop art, or keeping the abstract style, but relying on a trick capable of avoiding any sentimentalist pictorial gesture.

One solution was proposed through the obsessive reiteration of a compositional and formal principle in the realization of the work which was driving the painting to gestalt or optical results, or by choosing complicated mathematical rules or mechanical dynamics, as suggested by the emerging programmed and kinetic currents. The coexistence of these two trends was not without controversy and polemics. The works exhibited on the occasion of the IV San Marino Biennial (1963) and the subsequent Venetian Biennial of 1964 were famous.

But returning to Rome of Gencay, the ‘pop’s were gathering at the gallery of Pliny De Martiis, “La Tartaruga”, giving birth to the School of Piazza del Popolo; on the other hand the supporters of Gestalt’s theories, were finding an indispensable firm point in Carlo Giulio Argan, critical promoter of Group 1.

Not to mention the influences, on the cultural environment of the Capital, of the new currents that came from Milan, that of Azimut heading all, where the connection with the new European avant-garde was, without a doubt, much more firm.

But it will be Rome to host the first exhibition in Italy of Zero, organized by Gian Tommaso Liverani Gallery La Salita, with the title Mack + Klein + Piene + Uecker + Lo Savio = 0. In October 1962 arrives l’Arte Programmata theorized by Bruno Munariand Umberto Eco (1962) which was presented first in Milan in May in Spazio Olivetti on via Vittorio Emanuele.

Crucial, in those years, was also the presence of a writer in the city, such Nobuya Abe who was in constant dialogue with his colleagues of Milan – Manzoni and Fontana at the first place – and those Europeans, to whom he was providing the comparison with the new Avant-garde of Japan. guardia che proveniva dal Giappone. E proprio Nobuya Abe ci riporta alla giovane Gencay, che per anni sarà la sua assistente e collaboratrice. I primi lavori realizzati in Italia da Gencay Kasapçi si rivelano ancora saturati di una componente figurativa, anche se mantenuti sempre in bilico tra realismo e astrazione.

Si tratta di un nucleo di vedute urbane aventi come soggetto Roma e Firenze, in cui il gesto dell’artista si traduce in colate di inchiostro rapide ed evanescenti, di chiara ascendenza informale. La sua prima personale in Italia, tenuta alla Fondazione Ernesta Besso, sarà ancora improntata su questa ricerca. Intanto Gencay conosce e frequenta l’ambiente culturale romano e italiano. Incontra Lucio Fontana, Mimmo Rotella, Piero Dorazio, Roberto Crippa, Natsuko Toyofuku ed Enrico Castellani.

Già l’anno successivo, alla Galleria Del Cavallino, a Venezia, Gencay mostra uno stile radicalmente cambiato. Segue nel 1963, un’altra importante occasione di esporre, questa volta alla galleria di Liverani, a Roma. Tre di questi lavori, rimasti di proprietà del gallerista, sono entrati a far parte delle collezioni della Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna di Roma, presenti nel fondo di opere donate al museo romano alla morte di Liverani. In poco tempo, Gencay diventa un’autrice matura, con una ricerca accettata e riconosciuta all’interno delle avanguardie europee come dimostra la sua partecipazione ad Avant-garde Zero 1966, tenutasi nella galleria romana Il Segno. Il suo lavoro entrerà così in dialogo con quello di autori come Fontana, Castellani, Manzoni, Klein, Soto, Piene, Mack e lo stesso Abe. Gencay Kasapçi ha messo a punto uno stile nuovo, originale che ancora oggi porta avanti nonostante le evidenti difficoltà riscontrate al suo ritorno in Turchia, dove trova un gusto collettivo ancora poco incline ad accettare un linguaggio così d’avanguardia. Nella sua pittura si condensa il gesto reiterato e l’accostamento di forme tipiche dell’arte gestaltica, la tradizione del decorativismo musivo bizantino, la sapienza della filosofia orientale trasmessa da Abe. Tre elementi che fanno dell’arte di Gencay Kasapçi la sintesi perfetta tra Occidente e Oriente, quella congiunzione tra popoli e culture che è specchio delle sue origini mediterranee. Pur nella loro rigida intelaiatura geometrica, i suoi lavori non hanno mai perso spontaneità e immediatezza. La sua è una pittura modulare, che si fonda sulla ripetizione costante del punto, scelto come elemento geometrico puro. In questa sua ripetizione, ogni piccolo punto perde la sua singolarità e si associa in un insieme

brings us back to the young Gencay, who would be his assistant and co-worker for years.

The first works performed by Gencay Kasapçı in Italy still had intensive figurative components, even though they always kept a balance between realism and abstraction. They represent some urban landscapes with Rome and Florence as subjects, in which the pictorial act are quick and evanescent ink pourings, with a clear informal reference.

Her first exhibit in Italy, at the Fondazione Ernesta Besso, would be still marked by this research. In the meantime, Gencay gets to know and frequents the Roman and Italian cultural circles. She meets Lucio Fontana, Mimmo Rotella, Piero Dorazio, Roberto Crippa, Natsuko Toyofuku and Enrico Castellani.

Indeed, the following year, Gencay exhibit in Galleria del Cavallino in Venice, a style which was radically changed.

In 1963, another important opportunity to exhibit, this time at the Gallery of Liverani in Rome. Three of these paintings remained as the property of the gallery owner, then became a part of the collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art of Rome, as the artworks of Liverani foundation were donated to this museum after his death. Soon, Gencay becomes a mature artist, recognized and accepted as exclusive among European Avant-gardes, as her participation to Avant-garde Zero 1966 held in Il Segno gallery in Rome, proves it. Her artwork enters in dialogue with artists as such Fontana, Castellani, Manzoni, Klein, Soto, Piene, Mack and Abe himself.

Gencay Kasapçı invented a new and original style that she still carries on despite the difficulties encountered at her return in Turkey, where the collective taste is not keen on accepting such an Avant-guard language. In her painting, the obsessively repetitive gesture and a combination of typical forms of gestalt art, the tradition of Byzantine mosaic decoration, the wisdom of Eastern philosophy learned from Abe, are concentrated. The three elements which make Gencay Kasapçı’s art, are the perfect synthesis of West and East, the connection between people, and the culture which is the mirror of her Mediterranean origins. Despite their rigid geometric framework, her artworks never lost their spontaneity and directness. Hers is a modular painting, based on the constant repetition of dots, chosen as a pure geometric component.

In this repetition, every little dot loses its singularity and connects itself in a bigger set, creating new independent shapes.

più grande, dando vita a nuove forme autonome. Archi, cerchi, strisce che a loro volta si ripetono sulla tela. È il fenomeno che nella gestalt è identificato con i principi della prossimità e della buona continuità. E queste nuove forme che si creano sulla retina suggeriscono in chi guarda un’esperienza sensoriale ed emotiva, non solo ottica e mentale. Questo perché in quei suoi punti, Gencay riversa anche una forte carica simbolica. «Il punto per me - mi racconta Gencay - rappresenta l’idea del principio della vita; gli embrioni all’inizio del loro sviluppo non sono altro che piccoli puntini; venendo al mondo l’individuo cresce e si perde tra le gente e le masse, diventando una seconda volta un piccolo puntino». Gencay nutre la sua arte di forti riflessioni esistenziali, considerazioni sulla vita intesa come un ciclo continuo di nascita, crescita e morte e di connessioni tra l’uomo e l’universo. Un idealismo che rende il punto di Gencay quasi discendente dalle teorie dell’Ensō giapponese. Una connessione che, in maniera consapevole o meno, le poteva essere giunta attraverso gli insegnamenti di Abe, nella cui pittura torna spesso il simbolo del cerchio (o dello zero, se si preferisce). La forma del cerchio, chiamata Ensō, è un elemento ricorrente nella tradizione Zen e coincide con “l’espressione del momento”, in cui la mente si lascia andare e il corpo si congiunge allo spirito in un atto creativo. Esso simboleggia anche la forza dell’universo, il conseguimento dell’illuminazione. L’essere nell’attimo, consapevoli di quello che si sta vivendo. Concetti che fanno tornare alla mente proprio le parole che Nobuya Abe scrive nel manifesto del gruppo Illumination (1967): «L’essere coscienti: strana cosa. Ma il fatto che l’uomo abbia la coscienza significa che egli ha visto la situazione del suo tempo. Luce fioca, luce brillante». E Gencay, oggi donna matura, è sempre stata consapevole del proprio tempo e delle proprie capacità, così come della sua arte che è quanto, dopo più di cinquant’anni da questo meraviglioso periodo romano, le riempie la vita ancora di gioia.

Arcs, circles, stripes that repeat themselves on the canvas. It is a phenomenon that was identified in gestalt, with the principles of proximity and good continuity.

And these new shapes that are formed in the retina, provoke in the observer, not only an optical and mental experience but a sensorial and emotive one. This is because in those dots, Gencay pours a strong symbolic content. «For me, the dot – Gencay tells me – represents the idea of the beginning of life: the embryos at the beginning of their evolution are nothing but little dots; coming to this world an individual grows and gets lost among people and masses, becoming again a small dot».

Gencay feeds her art with strong existential thoughts, considerations about life as a continuous cycle of birth, growth and death and of connections between man and universe.

An idealism that make Gencay’s almost a descendent from Japanese Ensō theories. A connection that, consciously or not, might have arrived at her through the teachings of Abe, in the paintings of whom often does show up the circle (or the zero, if preferable). The circle shape, called Ensō, is a recurring element in Zen tradition and corresponds to the “expression of the moment”, in which human mind lets it go and the body joins the spirit in a creative act. It also symbolizes the strength of the universe, the achievement of the enlightment. Being the moment, being aware of the moment lived. These notions remind the words written by Nobuya Abe in the manifest of the group Illumination (1967): «Being conscious: what a weird thing. But the fact that the man have conscience means that he saw the condition of his time. Dim light, bright light». And Gencay, now a mature woman, has always been conscious of her time and her capacities, as of her art, which after more than fifty years since those wonderful years in Rome, still fills her life with joy.

ZERO Zero è un movimento artistico d’avanguardia nato con lo scopo di risollevare l’ambiente depresso dalla seconda guerra mondiale con la creazione di un clima più entusiasta e positivo e con un nuovo dinamismo di luce nell’arte. Zero è un movimento dove gli artisti si esprimono da zero a classico, sondando ogni direttrice possibile per il post-guerra.

Zero nasce nel 1957 con le attività Heinz Mack e Otto Pienne di Dusseldorf e ha continuato a diffondersi attraverso artisti come Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Gunther Uecker e Tinguely.

Heinz Mack, con le sue opere ha incrementato nel movimento tecniche ed impiego di materiali: tela in bianco e nero e alluminio, acciaio inox, plexiglass, schiuma, realizzando effettivamente un modo nuovo di pensare applicato alla sua arte con dinamiche innovative. Gli artisti che preferiscono partire da zero come una via d’uscita dalla cultura tedesca che ha perso la sua essenza nel periodo bellico avvicinano le loro opere ad un mondo in bianco e nero, separando le loro tele e le loro reazioni, con le creazioni, attraverso un diverso impiego della luce, senza limitarsi a dipingere la luce stessa.

Questo movimento iniziato in Germania dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, ha presentato i suoi effetti in primo luogo in Europa, poi in America e quindi in Giappone e ha creato una rete internazionale d’arte.

Zero è visto come una manifestazione di colore, stupore e individualità mantenendo negli anni i principi e gli effetti come uno dei movimenti più importanti dell’arte mondiale.

Zero ha stabilito una forte rete dal punto zero in cerchi concentrici con le sue mostre, la critica e gli artisti si è diffuso in Francia con Arman, Jean Tinguely e Yves Klein, in Spagna con Antoni Tapies, in Australia con Arnulf Rainer, in Italia con Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni , Turi Simetri e Agostino Bonalumi e ha continuato a diffondersi in America con Gesù Rafael Soto, Luis Tomasello e Almir MAVIGNIER. “Le espressioni artistiche degli Anni ’50 avevano creato in Europa un ambiente contaminato da flussi di pensiero molto diversi tra loro. In questo clima confuso e continuamente bombardato da nuovi impulsi di pensiero nasce la voglia di silenzio, il desiderio di azzeramento. Ed è proprio da questa forte esigenza che a Dusseldorf nacque il Gruppo Zero. Nella 10

Zero which is an avant-garde art movement aims at lifting the depressed environment after the World War II and creating a more joyous and positive atmosphere with a new dynamism and light in art. Zero is a movement that artists carry painting from scratch and in a classic style as if everything breathes in an environment they do not know which direction they should head for in the post-war era.

It appeared for the first time in 1957 with activities conducted monthly in a protest- exhibition way in Heinz Mack and Otto Pienne’s workshops in Dusseldorf and continued to spread with artists such as Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Gunther Uecker and Tinguely that come from other cities.

Heinz Mack, with his works that he added movement with monochrome canvas and aluminium, stainless steel, plexiglass foam stela and glittering dynamos, actually applied a way of thinking into his art with different dynamics. Artists who prefer to start from scratch as a way out in the German culture which has lost its essence in the war period approached their works in a monochrome way, divided their canvases and expressed their reactions by creating them through light instead of painting light in their paintings.

This movement which started in Germany after the World War II presented its effects by getting spread firstly to Europe, then America and then Japan and created an international art network. This movement which is seen as a manifestation of colour, emotion and individuality in art seemed like it continued until 1966, but it sustains its effects even after all these years as one of the most important movements of world art.

Zero established a strong network at the zero point in a circle with its exhibitions, criticisms and artists and spread to France with Arman, Jean Tinguely and Yves Klein, to Spain with Antoni Tapies, to Australia with Arnulf Rainer, to Italy with Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni and Turi Simetri, to Europe with Agostino Bonalumi and continued to spread to America with Jesus Rafael Soto, Luis Tomasello and Almir Mavignier.

Zero Movement expended fast through some basic issues of today’s modern art and held exhibitions with the contribution of the artists from many places in the world. The movement is still influential today and many Zero artists who use elements

rivista del gruppo, creata nel 1958, Piene spiegò come “Zero” fosse un termine scelto per l’intenzione di ripartire da capo, azzerando tutte le esperienze artistiche conosciute fino a qual momento per creare silenzio e purezza. «Zero è silenzio. Zero è inizio. Zero è rotondo. Il sole è Zero. Zero è bianco (…) Zero è l’occhio. La bocca. Il buco del culo (…) oro e argento, rumore e vapore. Circo nomade. Zero. Zero è silenzio. Zero è inizio.

Zero è rotondo. Zero è Zero», così scriveva Otto Piene nel 1963. Lo spettatore quindi non è tenuto a capire l’opera, né a leggerne la descrizione di un sentimento dell’artista, ma diventa parte attiva, è spinto a scoprire l’oggetto attraverso diversi punti di vista che ne modificano l’essenza.

Gli aderenti al Gruppo Zero inizialmente producono opere monocrome, segno di pulizia e azzeramento e l’anno della nascita del Gruppo Zero coincide anche con l’anno della creazione dell’“International Klein Blue”, il tono di blu con il quale Klein, diventato esponente importantissimo per il Gruppo, realizzava le sue pitture monocrome.” Movimento Zero si è sviluppato nutrendosi di alcuni fattori fondamentali di arte moderna e ha tenuto mostre con il contributo degli artisti di molte parti del mondo. Il movimento è ancora oggi influente e molti Zero artisti che usano elementi come la meccanica, il colore, la luce, l’ottica continuano le loro carriere indipendenti.

Questo movimento è influente ovunque ed è stato introdotto in Turchia da Gencay Kasapçı che ha operato in Italia con i maestri fondatori di Zero.

Dopo la laurea Accademica, Genkay ha proseguito la sua vita artistica ad Ankara e Istanbul, successivamente, nel 1959, la troviamo a Firenze. In quegli anni inizia il suo lavoro con opere astratte ed inizia la partecipazione alle alle mostre del gruppo ZERO firmandosi Gencay.

Il nome di Gencay Kasapçı è presente su invito di ZERO nella mostra dal titolo “avanguardia “ del 1966 con Heinz Mack, Yves Klein, Otto Piene, Günther Uecker ma già era presente a Milano nel 1962, con artisti che hanno contribuito a rafforzare l’anima del gruppo ZERO, come Tinguilly e Lucio Fontana.

Gencay Kasapçı vive in Turchia e ad Istanbul ci presenta tutto il percorso, che, dalle grandi mostre con i Maestri ZERO l’ha portata ai giorni nostri ‘Zero 1960-2016’

This movement which is influential in every place has continued in Turkey after Gencay Kasapçı crossed path with Zero masters in Italy. After graduating from the Academy, Kasapçı continued his art works in Ankara and Istanbul for a while. He went to Florence in 1959 to continue his education through a scholarship he received from Italy. As he was working on abstract, optic paintings there, he participated to the exhibitions of ZERO group with Gencay signature.

Gencay Kasapçı’s name is on the invitation of ZERO exhibition titled ‘avant-garde’ and dated 1966 with the team which consisted of Heinz Mack, Yves Klein, Otto Piene, Günther Uecker. We see on the invitation of an exhibition held in Milano in 1962 that he participated to the same exhibition with two important people who add soul to ZERO such as Tinguilly and Fontana. Gencay Kasapçı lives in Turkey today and presents the odysseys of the period to us in his exhibition titled ‘Zero 1960-2016’ with the Zero movement which he worked with the Masters of the period and has brought to Turkey.

Per chi ha avuto il privilegio di seguire l’evoluzione dell’opera dell’artista in un arco di quattro decenni è una sorgente d’ispirazione poter riflettere sulle sue intrecciate esplorazioni della sua ricerca per nuove dimensioni estetiche. Senza spostamenti paradigmatici la sua opera divenne una piattaforma di lancio verso nuove espressioni seguendo una traiettoria che si sforzava di catturare l’infinito ma allo stesso tempo anche l’effimero. All’alba della sua carriera d’artista negli anni sessanta, un periodo marcato da un rinascimento artistico con l’emergenza di nuovi movimenti di come “Zero”.

Kasapçı è stata capace di definire un suo idioma artistico che ha utilizzato per più di cinquanta anni, si può facilmente constatare che questo idioma trascende qualsiasi stile ed è talmente potente che ha fornito una piattaforma di lancio sulla quale l’artista ha potuto sperimentare una moltitudine di espressioni. Le stimolanti dicotomie tra il costante e il variabile, tra il sincronico e il diacronico, tra la massa ed il vuoto sono state le incessanti forze motrici che hanno spinto il suo lavoro artistico. Le sottili variazioni dentro l’ordine, la diversità nella monotonia, hanno senz’altro marcato la sua opera dal principio mantenendone anche oggi dopo cinque decenni il vigore.

As someone who has had the privilege of following the artist’s work evolve for over four decades it is a source of inspiration to reflect on her intricate explorations, her quest for new aesthetic dimensions. Without shifting paradigms her work became a launching pad towards new expressions following a trajectory that strived to capture the infinite and the ephemeral at the same time. In the dawn of her career as an artist in the early sixties, a period marked by a creative revival with the emergence of new movements such as Zero, Kasapçı was able to define her artistic idiom which she deployed for over fifty years. This idiom, which often one can easily see as transcending style, is so powerful that it can provide a sound platform on which the artist has been able to experiment with a multitude of expressions. The challenging dichotomies between the constant and variable, between the synchronic and the diachronic, between void and mass, have been the unceasing driving force behind her work. The subtle variations within the orderly, the diversity within the monotony have marked her work ever since and even today, after five decades, is as powerful as ever. Her art proves once again that the value of art can be measured not by the exasperating search for virtuosity and the burst of signs and symbols, of stylistic excesses but instead by the sobriety of the expression, the strength of the fundamental tenets of artistic expression, constant in history.

In una epoca marcata dalla confusione d’idiomi, di contraddizioni stilistiche, di crisi di creatività è lenitivo poter usufruire dell’arte dl Kasapçı, ancorando la percezione ai fondamenti estetici che personificano l’evoluzione dell’arte fin dagli inizi dell’epoca moderna, il movimento astratto delle sua opere fa pensare alla coreografia di Lucinda Child con le musiche di Phillip Glass degli anni settanta. it is soothing to experience Kasapçı’s art, anchoring one’s perception to sound aesthetic grounds that epitomize the evolution of art from the early modernist epoch. The abstract motion in her art work makes one think of Lucinda Child’s choreography of Phillip Glass’ music back in the early 1970’s. Child’s choreography often described as conceptual is marked by simple minimalist movements, beautiful in their spatial explorations. In her dances one can see the splendour of the different patterns the human body can create across a stage by fundamental repeated movements such as skipping and turning. In her dances she was able to create an entire performance piece based on one simple combination that would be repeated numerous times but in different ways. Her choreography, just as Kasapçı’s art, transcends time.

Perhaps this absolute freedom is the greatest challenge to artists, at times inhibiting their creativity, not to mention the demographic challenges of emerging from a crowd. It is in this difficult context that the artist pursued her artistic life not giving away to facile formulae or sensationalist gestures, instead following a coherent path of analysis and creativity setting her aside from the mainstream of fad following artists. It is this uniqueness that gives her work all accolades of value.

The ZERO foundation is a German cultural institute, established in December 2008, with support of Düsseldorf-based ZERO artists, Heinz Mack, Otto Piene and Günther Uecker, and Museum Kunst Palast. It is funded by the state capital Düsseldorf. The initiative behind the new foundation was taken by Mattijs Visser, backed by Hans-Georg Lohe, Düsseldorf’s local government officer for culture.

BIOGRAFIA / BIOGRAPHY (Ankara, 1933) Si laurea con lode all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Istanbul nel 1954 e in seguito si stabilisce ad Ankara dove inaugura la sua prima personale nel 1957. Nel frattempo frequenta i corsi di archeologia classica tenuti dal professor Ekrem Akurgal. Nel 1959 vince una borsa di studio bandita dal governo italiano, studierà a Firenze, approfondendo la tecnica dell’affresco e del mosaico sotto la guida del professor Collacichi. Nel 1960 apre il suo primo studio a Roma. Per un breve periodo si occupa di immagini per libri e riviste edite da Mondadori e Vallechi. Frequenta lo studio dell’artista giapponese Nobuya Abe insieme alle artiste serbe Mira Brtka e Milena Cubrakovic. ln breve tempo, questo luogo diventa il ritrovo di collezionisti e artisti contemporanei, è un momento che marca una vera e propria transizione nelle opere dell’artista. Nel 1962 a Venezia incontra Carlo Cardazzo e inaugura una personale alla Galleria del Cavallino. A Milano, le sue opere vengono esposte accanto a quelle di Abe, Colombo, Mondrian, Picasso, Twombly e Fontana.

E invitata a partecipare alla “Mostra dei Contrasti”. Nello stesso periodo partecipa al Convegno Internazionale di Rimini: Artisti Critici e studiosi d’Arte, come rappresentante della Turchia. Born 1933, Ankara,When her father became reserve officer.she graduated in 1950 to matriculate in the Academy of Fine Arts. Having obtained her degree with honors in 1965 from the said establishment, she settled in Ankara where she opened her first solo exhibition in 1957. In the meantime she followed the courses in classical archeology of Prof.

Ekrem Akurgal.

In 1959, she went to Florence on a scholarship awarded to her by the Italian Government where she studied frescoe and mosaic art under Prof. Collacichi. She was in 1960 in Rome where she established her own studio.

She provided for a short while books and periodicals with pictures for such publishing houses as Mondadori and Vallechi. She designed the cover for “Barka D’Noe” book of Gianna Manzini at the Mondadori Publishing House.

Meanwhile, she attended to the studio of Japanese Artist Nobuya Abe together with Serbian Artist Mira Brtka and Milena Cubrakovic. After very short time, this studio was soon to evolve into the haunt of collectioners and contemporary artist. This period marks the transition Period of Gencay’s paintings.

Her first solo exhibition outside Turkey was in Fondazione Ernesto Besso in Rome. She was invited to take part in art competition of Rome, Avezzano and Gubbio. She got a Second Prize in International Premio Gubbio Painting Competition. In 1961 she won a First Prize in the International Premio Gubbio Drawing Competition and was invited to Premio Europa in Ascona.

In 1962 he met Carlo Cardazzo in Venice and opened a solo exhibition in Gallerio Cavallino. In Milan her works were displayed side by side with the paintings of Abe, Colombo, Mondrian, Picasso, Twombly and Fontana.

She was invited to take part in the Mostra dei Contrasti exhibition.

In 1963 she organized her solo exhibition in the Gallery La Salita of Liverani. She joined the group Rotella, Dorazio, Consagra, Conte, Gia Pommodoro, Castellani and Fontana.

In 1964 she participated in Mostra Mercato Nazionale at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence. In 1964-1965 her works were selected to be exhibited at the IV-V Rasegna d’Arte Figuratifi Roma e del Lazio organized in Palazzo della Esposizione in Rome. During the same period she was invited to take part in the congress at Rimini of Convegna Internazionale Artisti Critici d’Arte as Turkish Artist. In 1964 she was among the 33 artists invited from Italy along with Abe, Carla Accardi, Pietro Consagra, Novelli, Dorazio which took place at Côte d’Azur, to the Deuxième Festival des Arts Platiques de la Côte d’azur. The same year she opened an exhibition at the Scorpio Gallery in Rome with Mira Britka and Frankini . In 1966 her works were displayed along with Abe, Fontana, Uecker, Burri, Afro, Arp, Kandisnski, Chagall, Braque in the gallery Il Segnıo in Rome and was invited to take part in the exhibition of Zero Avantgarde.

In 1966 she was back home, She had to interrupt her international links due to Turkey’s internal economic and politicial conditions.

She married Abdullah Kasapçı.

In 1963 – 68 she made big wall paintings produced by ceramics and mosaics for the Faculty of Architecture of the Middle East Technical University and the Kızılay Branches of Ziraat Bank and Şekerbank in Ankara.

Also, she produced and made artworks for the Etap Marmara and Divan Hotels in İstanbul and the İş Bank Headquarters in Ankara by using the glass evil eye beads with different technics created by her. Unfortunately, except for her work at the Department of Architecture mentioned above, the whereabouts of these works cannot be traced.

She acted as consultant and director to the Vakko Art Gallery in Ankara in which she enabled many a young talent to make a name.

In 1983 she established the art gallery MiGe. The years 1994-1995 saw her monumental works ‘Liberty’ and ‘Orange Tree’. She was the Art Adviser of the Galeri Replika in Istanbul.

Gencay is the first artist that made use of glass beads in her artistic productions. The multicolored glass beads that she had kilns manufacture for her contributed to the enhancement of her art. The table she produced using beads in 1958 was purchased by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to be diplayed at the Turkish Stand in the Brussels Fair. The same artwork which she produced for the hotel Divan disappeared during the restoration work of the hotel.

Today a good many people are engaged in the production of beads exported abroad.

Gencay’s works illustrate today the postcards of UNICEF, TEMA and TAP. Today, Gencay continues to produce her works in her own workshop at Mersin, Turkey.
