Welcome to the Summer 2023 NOW Conference!

DAY 1

Kick off the NOW Conference with Tim and Amanda for an evening of artmaking, community, games, and prizes!

DAY 2

The Main Event • July 27 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. CT

A full day of engaging learning from our presenters and keynote speakers.

Get the boost you need with PD just for art teachers! Use this guide to lead you through the conference and help bring your inspiration and new ideas directly into your classroom. You will be able to find sessions to reinvigorate your teaching and help you thrive for the rest of the year.

Inside, you’ll find note-taking (and doodling!) space for each presentation, creativity prompts, links that lead to further exploration, and much more! Sit back and relax. It’s going to be an incredible conference day!

Before the event, set yourself up for success by making sure to check your tech, gather supplies, and load up on snacks!

TECH CHECK!

The NOW Conference will take place on Zoom. Links are shared on the NOW Attendee Guide landing page and will be sent via email on the day of the event. Make sure you have a good wi-fi connection and can stream a Zoom meeting on your device.

GET SET!

To ensure a relaxing day, spend a few minutes gathering the following materials ahead of time:

• A sketchbook, paper, and a few fun artmaking materials. Check out the full supply list on the NOW Attendee Guide landing page. If you received a swag box, check inside for your supplies!

• Your favorite drawing tool for making sketches and taking notes.

• Headphones to eliminate distractions.

• Snacks and drinks to keep your energy up.

• A pre-packed lunch you can grab quickly during one of our breaks.

SNACK ATTACK

Create a unique art-themed snack for the conference and share it on social media using the hashtag #NOWConference. The best snack will win free entry to the Winter 2024 Conference! Could your lunch be a Romero Burrito? A plate of Fusili Kandinsky? Whatever you come up with, we want to see it!

Drink Menu

MARIA MARTINI-EZ

Ingredients

• 3 oz gin

• ½ oz dry vermouth

Directions

Mix ingredients into a shaker with ice cubes. Shake well. Pour into a perfectly made and intricately designed black ceramic pot.

Enjoy!

IMPRESSION (TEQUILA) SUNRISE

Ingredients

• 2 oz tequila

• 4 oz orange juice

• ½ oz grenadine

• Orange slice and maraschino cherry for garnish

Directions

Fill a highball glass with ice and pour in the tequila and orange juice. Stir well. Slowly pour the grenadine around the inside edge of the glass. Create three quick sketches over the next five minutes, noticing how the grenadine sinks to the bottom and then slowly rises to mix with the other ingredients. Add garnishes.

BRAQUE AND TAN

Ingredients

• 1 can or bottle of your favorite pale ale

• 1 can or bottle of Guinness or other stout

Directions

Fill a pint glass halfway with the pale ale. Float the Guinness on top by pouring it over the back of a spoon. Sip slowly while watching Picasso get all the credit for your ideas.

EARL GREYSCALE TEA

Ingredients

• 8 oz boiling water

• 1 bag Earl Grey Tea

Directions

After boiling water, seep the tea bag for 5 minutes. Sip while glancing around and determining the relative values of all your surroundings.

Davia King

Building Community Through Art: Collaboration, Connection, and Empowerment

Davia King is an abstract expressionist and conceptual artist focusing on human connection. She was born on the edge of the scenic Wasatch Mountains in Provo, Utah, but the big city energy and culture of Los Angeles beckoned her, and in 2009 she moved to where she currently lives and works.

PRESENTATION:

Building Community Through Art: Collaboration, Connection, and Empowerment

Join Los Angeles-based street artist Davia King as she collaborates with the students of Western High School in Anaheim, CA, to bring a distinct and colorful mural to their campus. This presentation will show Davia in action as she plans and executes one of her distinct works, empowering students to be part of the process at every step along the way. Davia will also share her own story and talk about her career as an artist, discussing why she believes in the power of community and the importance of finding and appreciating the connections that exist between all of us.
