“My work seeks to recover the scent of this forgotten Bonhyang.”

“Nature is silent, yet its voice resonates within our innermost selves Though we always dwell in its embrace, we live forgetting its fragrance. My work seeks to recover the scent of this forgotten Bonhyang—our true homeland—and to return it to nature, the ultimate refuge for the human spirit.” – Kim San*

Kim San (b. 1989, Jeju, Korea)

Kim San depicts nature as a topos a spiritual homeland and refuge for humankind His practice centers on the concept of Bonhyang (本鄕), not merely a hometown, but an emotional and existential site of return By defining human traces as a Social Landscape, Kim weaves collective memories and personal experiences into his works Symbols such as the white deer (longevity, purity, spirituality) and the Gotjawal forest (inner sanctuary) embody his exploration of the dialogue between humans and nature, revealing the longing for harmony and completion within its embrace *

WORKS

Kim San

"BonHyang (本鄕) is a medium that questions the origin of existence and seeks the essence of life. Kim San symbolically expresses creation and extinction, and the unity of humanity and nature, through the Gotjawal forests of Jeju and the myth of the white deer (Baeknok) "

Kim San’s art is grounded in Bonhyang (本鄕) While literally meaning “one’s native place,” on Jeju Island, it carries a deeper resonance: an ancient belief system that supports the human spirit and connects humanity with nature.

Booth No. C24

His paintings present forests filled with grasses, trees, and the luminous figure of the white deer (Baeknok), a symbol of longevity in East Asian tradition For the artist, this image became especially significant after a sudden heart attack in 2019, when he faced the brink of death. The deer, linked to Jeju mythology and the Gotjawal forests, embodies his confrontation with mortality and his renewed attachment to life

Through these works, Kim San creates landscapes that go beyond scenery, transforming into symbolic spaces of creation and extinction, life and myth They invite viewers to reflect on the essence of existence and on the possibility of returning to one’s true homeland within.

ARTIST COMMENT

“I am truly grateful to have this invaluable opportunity with WAPUULPOP and its foundation to participate in the New York Affordable Art Fair, following my exhibition in Canada. This marks an honorable moment to present my work beyond Korea to a global audience

As an artist who deeply cherishes nature and animals, I believe it is a rare privilege for a Korean artist to share one’s vision internationally, communicating not through language but through the universal language of visual imagery.”
