Artist Lock-In Residency Application Pack

Sunday 9 to Sunday 16 March 2025

Spend a week immersed in the historic walls of Elizabeth Castle, where the rhythm of the tides shapes your creative process and every moment is an invitation to collaborate and innovate.

The Programme

The Artist Lock-In is ArtHouse Jersey’s flagship interdisciplinary residency programme designed to push the boundaries of creative practice and offer artists a weeklong transformative experience.

For its ninth iteration, taking place between Sunday 9 and Sunday 16 March 2025 at the historic island fortress of Elizabeth Castle in St. Aubin’s Bay in Jersey, Channel Islands, this residency offers twelve adventurous artists the chance to explore, collaborate, and innovate in a truly unique setting where art, nature, and community converge.

The Artist Lock-In is a meeting of minds and a catalyst for creation. It is about rethinking the approach to your craft, the environment we share, and your connection with others. The location of the residency is on a tidal islet in Jersey, cut off from the land for up to twelve hours a day, providing a unique environment to exchange and reflect among this newly established microcommunity, and engage deeply with the landscape and one another.

The Offer

• Week-long immersive residency for artistic exploration and collaboration

• Expert facilitation by Sue Hill and Francesca Duncan

• Engage in hands-on, process-driven analogue art-making, embracing impermanence

• Fully residential with shared on-site accommodation, meals and materials provided

• Artists must arrive in St. Helier by 9.30am on Sunday 9 March at their own cost

ArtHouse Jersey offers a week of uninterrupted creativity where the pressures of daily life are left behind, and the focus is entirely on artistic exploration.

Expertly facilitated by experienced practitioners Sue Hill and Francesca Duncan, this immersive and fastpaced residency is designed to encourage experimentation and play without the requirement to deliver a finished product. Fuelled by lungs full of sea air you will engage in a series of dynamic workshops and collaborative exercises, drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings and each other’s diverse practices. The residency fosters a spirit of openness and shared purpose through the formation of a tight-knit micro-community.

Expect to get your hands dirty - both figuratively and literally - as you engage in hard, fast, and experimental analogue art-making that challenges you to let go and embrace the processdriven approach with the idea of impermanence and the possibility of discarding work that doesn’t serve the creative journey.

This fully residential programme requires artists to cover their travel expenses to Jersey. Once you have arrived at Elizabeth Castle your accommodation, meals, and materials are provided at no cost. Accommodation at the newly refurbished Elizabeth Castle is in shared bedrooms. Artists will remain on the islet for the duration of the residency, fostering a truly immersive experience.

Due to access limitations caused by the tides, it is crucial that you arrive in St Helier by 9.30am on Sunday 9 March. It is advisable to arrive in Jersey the evening before to avoid any possibility of you being late as we won’t be able to wait for you. We are happy to advise where you might be able to find suitable accommodation prior to the start of the residency, or with which to extend your visit. The residency will conclude on the morning of Sunday 16 March, with onward travel from St. Helier possible from midday.

Who It Is For

• Open to artists over 21 from all disciplines, with a committed professional practice

• Ideal for those new to residencies, focusing on collaboration

• Requires a confident grasp of the English language and a spirit of openness

• Designed for twelve artists willing to step outside their comfort zones and engage with others

• Participants should be reasonably fit and prepared to work outdoors

The Artist Lock-In is open to artists and arts professionals who are over the age of 21 from all disciplines and backgrounds.

Artists must have a committed professional practice, and regularly present their work to an audience, whether through performance, exhibition, or community engagement. We particularly welcome those who’ve never experienced a residency before.

This is an international residency where the work will be collaborative and conducted in English. We require artists to have a confident grasp of the language and a willingness to engage with others in a spirit of openness and generosity. This is not a residency to work on a specific project, but rather a chance to explore and make connections.

This residency is particularly suited to those who are eager to step outside their comfort zones, embrace the unpredictable, and engage deeply with the people around them. We would like to meet artists who seek to challenge themselves through collaboration and reflection.

You should be prepared to brave the elements. The work may at times be physically demanding so you should be reasonably fit and happy to work outside on rough terrain and in all weathers.

Please feel welcome to contact Francesca Duncan by e-mail at francesca@arts.je with any specific queries regarding accessibility.
