Есть ли художественный прием сложнее чем юмор в изобразительном искусстве? Художник стремящийся быть саркастичным всегда стоит перед двойной проблемой, как сделать образы узнаваемыми а юмор более многогранным. Художник который иронизирует – не комидиант или иллюстратор комиксов. Он должен быть очень точным и убедительным в изображении обьекта, не используя диалог, сценарий, или театральную комедию. Не удивительно, что такой подход уникален. Есть ли художники в истории Западного искусства, которые использовали подобные методы? Питер Брейгель иногда, Иероним Босх на грани страшного сна, Микеланджело в эксцентричных фрагментах Страшного Суда, Франс Хальц и другие голландцы с ненявазчивым настроением, Марсель Дюшан в концептуальных работах, таких как L.H.O.O.Q. (бородатая Монна Лиза) и Фонтан (писсуар) и другие художники обращались иногда к этому методу. Но кто из классиков сделал сарказм своим главным элементом? Арчимбольдо, Уильям Хогард, Домье, Магрит – пожалуй только они в полной мере соотвествуют этой высокой художественной иерархии. Эмоциональная неуравновешенность, неразвитость вкуса и мы опускаемся до сентиментальности жанровой сцены Нормана Роквела.

Не будет противоречием сказать, что пост-советский художник Антон С. Кандинский воспринимает каждый обьект шуткой, а к каждой шутке относится серьезно. Антон родился в Крыму в 1960 году а в 1986 закончил Киевскую Академию художеств. Его глубокое классическое образование и высоко профессиональная техника, позволяют ему создавать убедительные с точным портретным сходством образы. Также важно что Антон С. Кандинский рос в 1970-х годах, когда Виталий Комар и Александр Меламид развивали Соц-Арт соединяя соц-реализм и западный поп-арт. В 1998 году Кандинский приехал в США. В 2007 году он подружился с художником нон-конформистом Меламидом (который в это время уже не сотрудничал с Виталием Комаром). Кандинский работал в студии рядом с этим неутомимым авант-гардным шутником. Меламид и Кандинский ежедневно беседовали через невысокую перегородку разделяющую их мастерские, навещали друг друга, обсуждали свои картины, бесконечно импровизируя, иногда работая вместе и участвовали в совместных выставках.

Со временем Кандинский начал воспринимать эстетику поп-культуры и техническое несовершенство современного западного искусства. Он также заметил, что другие страны в современном искусстве добились феноменального успеха. Общаясь с современными китайскими художниками Кандинский увидел, что у пост-советских и китайских художников много общего.

Их огромное, многонациональное отечество также безмерно сильно пострадало в период Второй Мировой войны, застыло культурно и экономически под многолетним гнетом тоталитарного режима и тепер наконец освободилось от жесткой коммунистической идеологии. Давлеющий соц-реализм в обоих странах не давал художникам эксперементировать в искусстве и развиваться. Но тогда, как пост-советские художники, после недолгого рассвета в 1989-м году снова соскользнули в неизвестность, современные китайские художники стали поразительно знаменитыми и успешными, в период между 2004 и 2008 годами. Даже американцы, привыкшие доминировать в искусстве с 1945-го года, внезапно позавидовали своим собратьям из КНР.

В этом контексте подружившись с многими китайскими художниками в Нью-Йорке, Кандинский создал идею «Китай-изма» (China-ism – «Чайнаизм»), его художественный ответ интернациональному искусству, постоянно меняющему свои приоритеты. В серии картин, начатой в 2007 году, он сочувственно отдает должное новой интернациональной динамике, комбинируя западных знаменитостей (Чака Клоуза, самого себя) со своими известными китайскими коллегами (Ай Вейвей, Ю Минжун), пользуясь слоганами «Не хочу быть художником американским (или русским), а хочу быть художником китайским».

Конечно же юмор имел место в первых работах китайских пост-мао авангардистов. Не только Ай (Ai Weiwei) и Ю (Yue Minjun), а также Фанг Лиюн (Fang Lijun), Ли Шан (Li Shan), Су Джиангджуо (Sui Jianguo), Ванг Гуангджи (Wang Guangyi), Зенг Фанжи (Zeng Fanzhi), Цанг Кшин (Cang Xin) и Жанг Гонгту (Zhang Hongtu) часто используют традиционно китайский юмор, где кроме

фривольности и сатиры известной Западу, присутствует и духовная комедийность, жизненно трансцедентальное добродушие смеющегося Будды, очистевшаяся душа, созерцающая земные прегрешения с улыбчивым снисхождением.

Очевидно, China-ism Кандинского – частично кивок расцвету Азии в 21-ом веке, ее демографическому потенциалу, новой экономической мощи, сфокусированному социально-политическому желанию стать вместо Запада глобальным лидером. Но присутствует нечто иное: глубже, смешнее, злей. Эти глумливые картины намекают, что прогресивные художники, со всей своей гуманитарной риторикой, в душе лелеют стремление к багатству, статусу, авторитету. В эпоху Джефа Кунса и Демияна Херста жажда славы и денег перестала быть секретом. Кандинский, издеваясь выводит еще более темный мотив социально «прогресивных» артистов – скрытое стремление к власти. В его картине 2009 года нынешний стандарт эстетики Энди Ворхол, взирая на человека властного над сотнями миллионов душ, говорит: «Хочу быть Мао Дзедуном». Есть ли это желание культурного бессмертия или настоящего абсолютизма? Как бы то ни было, несомненно Кандинский вполне понимает страшную силу Мао, в его картине того же года кровавейший советский тиран зависливо заявляет: «Не хочу быть Иосифом Сталиным. Хочу быть Мао Дзедуном».

Другое направление основанное Кандинским – Gemism – включает в себя орнаментальные композиции, фигуральные и абстрактные с ярко выписанными драгоценностями. Иногда самоцветы играют роль указок, привлекая взгяд к некоторым аспектам картин (забытым углам портретов, одноцветным рамкам); часто они просто украшения, щедро рассыпанные по другим предметам на картине (автоматам, шлемам, гранатам, пуленепробиваемым желетам) как символам артистического изобилия. Время от времени камни складываются в структурные элементы: полосы на флаге или интерпритация рефлекса геральдики на тему «Герники» Пикассо.

К чему эта повторяющаяся ассоциация между драгоценностями и войной? Простой ответ: жадность – исконная причина конфликта, даже когда президент США хочет «бескорыстно освободить» багатую нефтью страну на Ближнем Востоке. На фоне пустыни Кандинский переворачивает вверх ногами антитеррористический лозунг: «Видиш что-то? Скажи!». Вероятно художник усмотрел здесь лицемерие. Не столь очевидно, но интеллектуально утонченно идея преподнести эстетическую чистоту драгоценностей в противовес низменным инстинктам, ведущим к бесконечной войне. Каждый самоцвет Кандинского – сияющая шутка на тему природы человеческой, пародирующая ее грубость и вдохновляющая на самотрансформацию. Kandinsky’s Grin

By Richard Vine Is there any artistic tactic more difficult than visual humor? The artist who undertakes to create funny images confronts a dual challenge: first, to make the pictures truly amusing; second, to keep the humor from cloying. And a painter who jokes—as opposed to a live performer or even a comic-strip illustrator—must work this trick exclusively in the eye, so to speak, without the aid of extensive dialogue, plot or physical comedy. Little wonder that the form is exceedingly rare. Indeed, in the entire history of Western art, how many famous practitioners can we cite? Breughel at times, Bosch in nightmare fashion, Michelangelo in odd sectors of the Last Judgment, Hals and other Dutch masters in a jovial mood, Duchamp in conceptually rich works like L.H.O.O.Q. (his bearded Mona Lisa) and Fountain (his inverted urinal), many other artists once or twice, in some small part of their compositions, in passing. But who, among the classic names, has made humor their staple? Archimboldo, Hogarth, Daumier, Magritte— perhaps only these are full-time humorists of a high artistic order. An emotional slip, a lapse of taste, and one descends immediately into the sentimental realm of genrescene painters and Norman Rockwell.

Thus it is no contradiction to say that the former-USSR artist Anton Kandinsky treats every subject as joke, and every joke as a fundamentally serious matter. Born in Crimea, Ukraine, in 1960, he studied at the Simferopol Art College and the Ukrainian Academy of Arts, from which he obtained his MFA in 1986. His rigorous training in oldstyle academic naturalism enables the artist to create convincing figures and compelling likenesses at will, a technique central to his deadpan approach. Probably of equal import is the fact that Kandinsky was a teenager during the 1970s, when Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid were developing their tongue-in-cheek Sots Art, with its doubly satiric blend of Socialist Realism and Western Pop Art. In 1998, Kandinsky moved to U.S., where he became friends with the now émigré Melamid (who had by then split from Komar). Since 2007, Kandinsky has occupied a studio next to that of the relentless avant-garde prankster. The two artists speak daily over the dividing partial wall, visit each other’s spaces, comment on each other’s work, ad lib endlessly, occasionally collaborate, and sometimes participate in the same group shows.

It took several years for Kandinsky to accept as esthetically valid the pop sensibility and technical crudity of much contemporary Western art. Once he did, he soon became aware of a kindred development elsewhere in the world that was having phenomenal international success. Contemporary Chinese artists shared much with Kandinsky and his Soviet-born peers. Their huge, multi-ethnic country, too, had suffered unimaginably in the WWII era, had stultified culturally and economically under authoritarian rule for decades, and then had undergone a startling liberation from hard-line Communist ideology. In both nations, an insouciant artistic experimentation followed the demise of Social Realism. But whereas Russian artists, after a brief post-1989 efflorescence, receded into relative obscurity on the global market, experimental Chinese artists were enjoying an astonishing spike in notoriety and prices in the 2004-08 period. Even American artists, accustomed to critical and financial dominance since 1945, suddenly felt an unsettling envy for their brethren in the People’s Republic.

It was in this context that Kandinsky—having made friends with many Chinese nationals abroad (though he has never visited their country)—forged the notion of China-ism, his imagistic response to an international art scene turned topsy-turvy.

In an ongoing series of painting begun in 2007, he ruefully defers to the new international dynamic through character match-ups in which Western art figures (Chuck Close, Kandinsky himself) are paired with Chinese art stars (Ai Weiwei, Yue Minjun) between text banners reading “I don’t want to be an American [or Russian] artist / I want to be a Chinese artist.”

Certainly humor has played a major role in the work of China’s first post-Mao avantgardists. In addition to Ai and Yue, artists such as Fang Lijun, Li Shan, Sui Jianguo, Wang Guangyi, Zeng Fanzhi, Cang Xin, and Zhang Hongtu make abundant use of mirth, tapping into a Chinese tradition that recognizes (in addition to the pure frivolity and satiric mockery familiar in the West) a deeper, more spiritual dimension to comedy: the simultaneously life-affirming and world-transcending joviality of the Laughing Buddha—the purified soul who, in his wisdom, can contemplate earthly foibles with a bemused indulgence.

Clearly, Kandinsky’s China-ism is in part an acknowledgment of the 21st-century rise of Asia, and its potential—through swelling demographics, burgeoning economic might, and focused sociopolitical will—to displace the West in global leadership. But something else—something deeper, funnier, and more sinister—is also going on.

These wry pictures suggest that progressive artists, for all their humanitarian rhetoric, harbor in their hearts an unspoken desire for wealth, status, and overweening authority. In the age of Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst, the lust for art-world fame and riches has become an open secret. Yet Kandinsky gleefully exposes a more ominous impulse: socially “progressive” artists’ fierce, though publicly unacknowledged, will-topower. In a 2009 painting, he depicts today’s esthetic paragon, Andy Warhol, gazing not at a superstar Chinese artist but at the man who long held life-and-death sway over hundreds of millions of souls. “I want to be Mao Zedong,” reads the thought strip.

Is this merely a bid for cultural immortality, or a longing for true dictatorial absolutism? In either case, there can be no doubt that Kandinsky fully realizes the murderous potency of Mao: in a work from the same year, he has the USSR’s bloodiest tyrant project a similarly envious sentiment: “I don’t want to be Joseph Stalin / I want to be Mao Zedong.”

Kandinsky’s other self-generated movement, Gemism, involves ornamenting compositions, both representational and abstract, with lustrously rendered jewels. Sometimes the depicted gems serve as highlights, snagging the viewer’s gaze and redirecting it to neglected pictorial areas (the forgotten corners of portraits, the borders of monochromes); sometimes the stones are more-or-less arbitrary embellishments, scattered lavishly among the work’s other forms (guns, grenades, helmets, flak vests) like symbols of artistic largesse. But occasionally the baubles are, disconcertingly, massed or patterned into basic structural elements: the stripes of a flag or the framing device for the “reflection” of Picasso’s Guernica.

Why this repeated association between jewels and combat? One simple answer is that greed for resources and wealth has always been a prime motivation for war, even when disguised—consider present U.S. actions in the oil-rich Middle East—as a selfless drive to liberate. (Kandinsky’s studies of American troops in desert terrain turn an antiterrorist slogan back on itself: “If you see something,” the inscription reads, “say something.” Apparently what the artist sees, and here obliquely portrays, is hypocrisy.)

Less immediately striking, but more intellectually refined, is the treatment of gems, in their esthetic purity, as visual counterbalances to the low, mad instincts that prompt endless mayhem. Every Kandinsky jewel is a gleaming joke on human nature — lampooning its grossness while merrily inspiring its self-transformation.

За короткий промежуток времени, минувший после распада Советского Союза, замечательный художник Антон Скорубский-Кандинский сделал несколько важных шагов в международном мире искусства. В ходе этого он пересек свою родину, затем отправился из Украины в Германию, и в конечном счете очутился в Нью-Йорке, где к тому времени уже поселился не один его соотечественик-художник, и где у него теперь мастерская в Манхэттене.

Не менее кардинальными были вариации в художественном методе Кандинского, отметившие стремительный переход мастера от солидной базы классического искусства, полученной им в Киевском государственном художественном институте (теперь – Национальная академия изобразительного искусства и архитектуры Украины) и, перед этим, изучения советской реалистической традиции в Ленинграде, где он брал частные уроки у академика Евсея Моисеенко (1916–1988). Претерпев настоящий переворот, Кандинский открыл свой нынешний метод – яркий, сияющий «джемизм» (от английского gem – драгоценный камень), с работами, усыпанными иронией в той же степени, как и сиянием украшенной драгоценностями короны «Гентского алтаря» Яна ван Эйка.

Наполненные светом, глубоко индивидуальные картины Кандинского теперь стали по сути модернистскими, но они насыщены уроками и блестящей техникой исторического прошлого, а также страстным желанием художника исследовать такие загадочные явления, как связи между внешним миром и внутренним опытом, между «макро» и «микро» бытия. В «Социальном эротизме», «Американском флаге» и других блестящих вкладах в его продолжающийся художественный цикл, собственно драгоценные камни представяют собой наполненные бесконечными отражениями и несущие откровение образы; они анализируются и деконструируются до уровня элементов первооосновы с помощью оригинального пуантилистского ви́дения, отсылающего к эпохе Возрождения. В «Американском флаге», фундаментальном полотне 2005 г., дается отражение того, что мы могли бы найти, так сказать, с обратной стороны настоящего государственного флага: поле звезд, символизирующих отдельные штаты, здесь передано весам, на которых балансируют набитый деньгами кошелек и напоминающее конфету человеческое сердце, пронзенное ощутимо болезненным, пусть и золотым, крюком в форме латинской буквы S. Под этими несущими дискомфорт, но превосходно изображенными предметами видим сардонический девиз американской валюты – «In God We Trust». В равной мере знаковыми и не менее тревожащими являются два тонких золотых провода, ведущих от главных предметов к драгоценным камням, из которых составлена остальная часть флага, с рубинами, выстроенными в симметричные полосы красного, и бриллиантами, образующими полосы белого. От бархатного кошелька стиля эпохи Возрождения провод стелется, чтобы в конце концов указать на маленькое красное сердечко, закованное в бриллиант, а от пронзенного крюком сердца другой провод указывает на американский корабльавианосец, также заключенный в бриллиант.

Едкие месиджи, балансирующие на грани учтивости и иронии, становятся яснее с каждым следующим миниатюрным образом, вмонтированным в этот ювелирный флаг. Знаковые фигуры и структуры, от музея Гугенхейма до Элвиса Пресли, борются за наше внимание с символами свободы и демократии, помещенными на густо заполненную поверхность флага; среди них – Фредерик Даглас, Авраам Линкольн и, неоднократно, Джордж Буш-младший. Указывая далее на

многогранную природу нации, в наше поле зрения попадают небольшой золотой телец среди рубинов и золотая птица войны с крыльями в форме бомб, похоже, нацелившаяся на библейский символ жадности.

Изысканное искусство Кандинского представляет протрезвляющие, и даже шокирующие, сенсорные и чувственные пространство и эмблематику. Образы и их намеки, безусловно, бьют «через край» в стиле, напоминающем наиболее экстравагантные образцы поп-арта. Но эта блестящая презентация тем не менее подводит нас к разнообразию сложных и формально изысканных визуальных ассоциаций и, наиболее впечатляюще, к демонстрации технического мастерства, благодаря которому драгоценности на полотнах ван Эйка и других мастеров северного Возрождения кажутся настоящими. С точки зрения техники, это подчеркивает фундаментальную, впечатляющую классическую подготовку художника, полученную Кандинским в Советском Союзе – это было необходимо для достижения успеха, да и просто для того, чтобы выжить как художникпрофессионал.

Однако после распада Советского Союза основы его творчества и художественной карьеры испытали серьезное потрясение. В начале девяностых Кандинский спроектировал и построил в Крыму трехэтажное здание, которое стало культурным центром, местом интеллектуальных встреч и домом украинских и русских художников, приучавшихся к вновь обретенной свободе, как в искусстве, так и в более широком смысле. В тот момент неожиданно показалось, будто все двери открылись, и художник расширил свой репертуар, работая некоторое время в Гейдельберге, где он пришел к сплаву своей впечатляющей классической техники с новыми для него предметами и стилями, например абстракцией и извивающимися фигурами, чем-то напоминающими персонажей полотен Босха, в его оргийно-радостном цикле «Эротизм». Это был очень энергичный период быстрого роста, в течение которого суровая пропагандистская машина соцреализма, смягчившись, неожиданно превратилась в крупномасштабную визуальную иронию «Социального эротизма» 1999 г.

Но этот мир радикально переменился после уничтожения небоскребов Уорлд-Трейд-Центра руками террористов. Казалось, буквально в одно мгновение, эти знаковые достопримечательности стали столь же трагичными и ностальгическими, что и дирижабль, плывущий по небу рядом с ними на большом полотне Кандинского 2000 г. по названием «Sex and the City». С приходом террористической угрозы, остроумие и ирония исчезают, и заново начинается более глубоко осмысленный и тактильный цикл флагов. Цикл «Эротизм», с его матиссовскими мотивами в изображении томных, исполненных искушения фигур, был выражением бодрого гедонизма и плавных форм, в которых ощутимо влияние эстетики граффити. Ни одна из этих фигур не демонстрирует какой-либо специфики, кроме разве пышных бюстов или их отсутствия, за исключением одной ню, которая появляется неоднократно. Она отличается своей зеленой, покрытой патиной поверхностью, короной с острыми шипами и, время от времени, факелом в руке.

В отличие от этого, на «Украинском флаге с царапинами» и «Царапинах на флаге» (обе работы написаны в 2001 г.) живописная поверхность разорвана тромплейными выемками – следами небольшого рубина, которым, кажется, провели по поверхности.

Еще более сдержанным, хотя в нем присутствуют «фирменные» драгоценности Кандинского и его густо проработанное impasto (толстым слоем наложенная краска), является цикл «Медведей», созданный в первые годы нового века. Опираясь четырьмя лапами на черную землю с местами вмонтированными в нее драгоценными камнями, размещенные на черном же, лишенном глубины фоне, медведи окрашены в разные цвета: некоторые из них красные, другие – оранжевые или синие. В одном из случаев, медведь явно предстает как символ России, и это явно самка, медведица, она даже изображена как женщина, стоящая на четвереньках и светящаяся интенсивностью своей насыщенной, румяной кожи на фоне, оживленном лишь несколькими зелеными разрезами.

Не менее впечатляющим и смело поданным является ироничный триптих Кандинского под названием «Гармония приносит счастье». Каждая из трех его панелей представляет американского политика; на гармоничность здесь

намекает подчеркнуто соцреалистический стиль изображения, в красных рубахах на хмуром, покрытом тучами фоне. Подчеркнуто отсылая зрителей к политическим переменам, пришедшим в результате атак одиннадцатого сентября, Кандинский открыто устанавливает связь между нынешним мэром Нью-Йорка, Майклом Блумбергом, и предыдущим мэром, Руди Джулиани, стоящими по обе стороны президента Джорджа Буша-младшего. Gemism refers to artist’s application of realistic images of luminescent gemstones on his canvases. The gemstones are intermingled with flags, ideograms, political fig­ures and celebrities along with symbolism from China, the former Soviet Union and American pop culture. Yet this is not straight Pop, nor is it Chinese art or some pastiche of Soviet-era propaganda.

Gemism is a tip of the cap to all three.

KANDINSKY ABOUT CHINA-ISM I am a product of the socialist realist school of painting. When I came to the United States, I realized how weak we, Russians, were in the face of the world’s art processes. I understood that artists in the United States are an integral part of international art movements while we, Russians, are not. When I got here, I looked at installations and performance art as if it was something barbarian. Today, I understand that it is very sophisticated, an integral part of contemporary art.

When I studied works by Warhol, I was really impressed with his image of Mao. I was unconsciously drawn to the Mao painting after seeing it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Is it a sarcastic caricature? Is it making fun of this political figure? I see that Warhol had a certain attitude towards Mao. Much later, after I saw works by contemporary Chinese artists (Yu Minjun, Zhang Hongtu, Li Shan and others) I realized that if Warhol was alive today, he would have switched his attention from Basquiat to contemporary Chinese artists.

Contemporary Russian art is very simple. It copies Western contemporary art, sometimes producing very weak results. At the same time, contemporary Chinese art has made it in the West as a completely independent and authentic event. I don’t understand how Mao can simultaneously be in a mausoleum and on the paintings and still be received normally by the public. Contemporary Chinese art has very strong visual hieroglyph-symbols. In the West, the strongest visual symbols are the Mona Lisa, the Statue of Liberty, the Sphinx, and Michelangelo’s statue of David. Meanwhile in China, we see Yu Minjun’s smile. We think that China is primitive and communist but in reality they laugh at us. Yu Minjun’s smile is a very strong symbol!

Ai Weiwei’s attitude toward the West and China is another strong symbol. The artist gives the finger to both the White House in Washington D.C. and the Presidential Palace on Tiananmen Square. Ai Weiwei is strong and independent. A Russian artist would never give the finger to both the White House and the Kremlin. A Russian artist would take the side of either one party or another. This is why China is now the leader.

I won’t even mention contemporary Western artists, such as Koons or Hirst. They are too dependent on commerce. In our current economical crisis, their works have lost their actuality. On the contrary, art depends on social feelings. When social dependence and feelings disappear, art does not exist.

Do not think that China-ism is something unique or applicable only to China. China-ism is important for all of us, non-Chinese people especially, because contemporary Chinese art can contribute to the development of art internationally. This is a historical moment! Chinaism is a movement for non-Asian artists that will allow them to contribute to the advancement of world culture and art.

China is a very dynamically developing world economy. Hence its society, culture and art are developing very strongly as well. Problems attributed to the West (for example terrorism) are not applicable to China.

How did impressionism start?

How did a modern New York come into existence?

Where does the Renaissance come from?

Where does Kandinskyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s abstract art come from?

How did Picasso start making art?

There are some reasons that we cannot answer and explain these questions; yet we clearly understand that they exist.

With my China-ism concept, I confirm the phenomenon of the contemporary Chinese art.

如果说当代中国的经济已经成了世界经济的火车头，那么当代中国艺术，或许将是或者已 经是当代世界艺术的最后一粒“伟哥”。安迪．沃荷１９７２年将毛泽东的巨幅画像波普艺 术化，以毛泽东艺术造型为标志的当代艺术的中国主义（Ｃｈｉｎａ－ｉｓｍ）开始正式 进入世界艺术舞台，随着上个世纪九十年代末到本世纪初，当代中国艺术在世界艺术舞台 的频频亮相以及在世界各地重要拍卖行的天价竞拍，这已经成为当代世界艺术最为火爆的 场景。

中国主义（Ｃｈｉｎａ—ｉｓｍ）已经成为一道无处不在的风景线，如何解读中国？中国 的崛起是我们这个日益堕落的世界的“救星”，或者只是当代艺术虚构的一个“神话”？我们 需要拭目以待。由荣伟 David Rong, Alex Demko 担任策展人，纽约白盒子美术馆隆重推 出的安东．康定斯基和艾未未的大型主题展：[中国主义第二回：民主与经济的对话]，可 以说是当代艺术界以中国主义（Ｃｈｉｎａ—ｉｓｍ）系列作品再次呈现对当代中国的艺 术解读，这将是当代艺术史重新书写的开始，也是对我们当今世界生存状态的重新审视。

西方波普艺术可以说在安迪.沃荷以后，在当今艺术世界，可谓汗牛充栋。如果说安迪.沃 荷的“可乐罐头”、“25 个有色的玛丽莲.梦露像”代表了如当代著名思想家让.鲍德里亚所揭 示的资本主义后工业消费社会的典型特征：Hyperreality “超真实” 和 Simulation“仿象”，

更见证了瓦尔特.本雅明的“机械时代的艺术复制品”对艺术的“唯一性”的颠覆。1972 年安 迪.沃荷对毛泽东勾勒图像时，他对当代政治的波普图解，对当代中国的艺术阐释，更是 艺术对政治的界入与超越，也正如是，安迪.沃荷超越了鲍德里亚的“超真实”和“仿象”社 会，更是对本雅明的“艺术复制品”对艺术“唯一性”颠覆的颠覆。这就是安迪.沃荷的表达的 意义所在：任何脱离了当代社会政治现实的当代艺术，都将是无聊的、空洞无意义的。

安东.康定斯基的作品[我不想成为斯大林，我想成为毛泽东]，可以说对当代艺术世界乃至 对当今世界的一个极大的注释，一个反思，一个反讽，乃至一个笑话！如果说当斯大林作 为一个二十世纪屠夫的形象被人类文明社会彻底抛弃时，毛作为斯大林的学生，他对中国 人民的罪恶至今仍然没有被彻底清算之时， 如今却仍然是西方各大艺术展台乃至拍卖大 厅的主角和明星，这是历史的可悲抑或嘲弄？

如果说中国在 2008 年“成功”举办奥运会，正式向世界展示了一个“崛起”的中国，让世人 刮目相看；那么当代中国著名艺术家艾未未仅仅因为捍卫作为一个艺术家和公民的基本权 利：言论自由和艺术创作自由，而被中国当局以莫须有的罪名秘密关押 81 天，引起西方 乃至全世界艺术家的公愤与公众舆论的哗然，可以说在一夜之间将中国政府近年来精心打 造的所谓“软实力”化作灰烬。纽约古根汉姆艺术博物馆当代亚洲艺术资深策展人亚历山德 拉. 蒙露在纽约艾未未 12 生肖雕塑展开幕式上说：没有言论自由，就没有当代艺术！在 人类二十一世纪的今天，全世界都在分享民主、自由、正义等人类文明发展到今天的普世 价值，中国作为一个崛起的经济大国却仍然顽固的坚持专制、封闭、愚昧与愚民政策，与 人类文明发展倒行逆施，这正所谓“不是世界文明要挑战中国政府，而是中国政府要挑战 当代世界文明”。

大型主题艺术展[中国主义第二回：民主与经济的对话]，将由安东.康定斯基呈现 16 新创 作油画作品和艾未未的原创摄影作品及影像作品，将集中提出一个问题：如果中国已经或 正在改变我们这个世界，那么世界能否改变中国？

Works by Anton S. Kandinsky and Ai Weiwei Curatorial Introduction

By David Rong Since China has become the world’s economic powerhouse, Chinese contemporary art can be called as a last Viagra for the contemporary art world. When Andy Warhol transformed Mao into a pop art icon through his larger than life portrait, Mao officially entered the world art scene and became a timeless symbol of what artist Anton S. Kandinsky calls China-ism. Since the 1990s, Chinese contemporary art has played a large role in the global art world and market as evidenced in numerous publications, exhbitions, and auction results. Today, the price of art by certain Chinese contemporary artists at auction are skyhigh, and some can be said to be leaders of not just the Chinese contemporary art world but also the contemporary art world as a whole.

China-ism is a way for us, the global art community, to view and consider aspects of contemporary China. Is China’s rise to “savior” of our declining world a reality or is it simply a hopeful myth, kept afloat by the contemporary art market? We can only wait and see. The first China-ism exhibition was curated by David Rong and Alex Demko at Art Next Gallery in Chelsea in October 2009. It was the first exhibition by the New York based artist Anton S. Kandinsky to present a series of paintings and two installations on the subject of China addressing the topics of culture, politics and economy.

If Vasily Kandinsky’s art is representative of revolutionary change in the early twentieth century, then Anton S. Kandinsky has upheld his family’s tradition and followed in the footsteps of his forefather.

Well known for his Gemism paintings, which are works inspired by and decorated with gemstones, Anton S. Kandinsky founded the movement in New York in 2004. Gemism is composed of realistic images of gemstones intermingled with flags, ideograms, political figures and celebrities as well as historical and social iconography from China, the former Soviet Union and American pop culture.

In his 2008 exhibition Meditation of Weapons in Chicago, Anton S. Kandinsky reflected on his family’s artistic tradition and showcased his pop art style. Important to his oeuvre is the work of Andy Warhol, which is considered in today’s art world to be mainstream and ubiquitious. Warhol’s Coca-Cola and 25 Colored Marilyns are representative of aspects of a post-industrial consumer society referred to by Jean Baudrillard in his notion of hyper reality and simulation as well as by Walter Benjamin in his classic text The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction. However, when Warhol painted Mao, the artist expressed an illustration of contemporary politics in addition to giving an artistic interpretation of contemporary China. Here, politics not only entered art, but art entered politics, going beyond Baudrillard’s hyper reality and simulation and subverting Benjamin’s mechanical reproduction of the aura of art. As a result, Warhol became one of the most significant figures of twentieth century art.

Is Anton S. Kandinsky’s painting I don’t want to be Joseph Stalin, I want to be Mao Zedong, which was exhibited at the first exhibition of China-ism, a comment on the contemporary art world, a reflection of it, or simply a joke? It is good evidence that the characters and stars of the contemporary art world and market are being pulled from history---just think of the roles of Stalin and Mao today.

Although the atrocities Mao committed cannot be erased from history, we can still see him today with a smile on his face.

As the historian François Fukuyama said, history has not ended. Keeping in mind the events of the last few decades, which include the tragedy of World Trade Center in New York City and the financial crisis of Wall Street, President Barack Obama of United States announced on May 1, 2011 that Bin Laden is dead. But is the mission complete? We can only wait and see.

On one hand, our present is dramatically different from our past; on the other hand, some things will never change. In the subway stations of Moscow, signs once hung stating, “If you see something, say something.” Now, you can see the very same signs in the subway stations of New York City.

While China’s economy has changed dramatically over the last twenty years, the state of democracy in the country has not changed at all. Since Ai Weiwei, “one of the world’s most creative and courageous public citizens” according to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, was detained on April 3, 2011 and has been held in an unknown location by the Chinese government, the global art world and beyond has called for his release. What happened? Ai Weiwei is just an artist wanting his freedom of speech. As Bloomberg said we “stand in solidarity with the billions of people who do not have the most fundamental of all human rights, the most cherished of all American values, and the most valuable of all New York City’s riches: free expression.” All calls for Ai Weiwei’s release are being ignored. Alexandra Munroe, Senior Curator of Asian art at the Guggenheim Museum, spoke at the opening of Ai Weiwei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads in New York City stating that if there is no freedom of speech, there is no modern art and that the world is not challenging the Chinese government but the Chinese government is challenging the world.

China-ism II, Democracy or Economy?, an exhibition curated by David Rong and Alex Demko, will present more than twenty new oil paintings and several installations by Anton S. Kandinsky as well as one original photograph and video art by Ai Weiwei. With this exhibition, we ask the question: “If China is already changing the world, will the world change China?”

Anton S. Kandinsky is a New York based artist and creator of China-ism, which represents a large body of work, thinking, perspective and sense of humor. China-ism is an “alternative modern China” in the contemporary art world.

I DON’T WANT TO BE A RUSSIAN ARTIST… Anton S. Kandinsky

I met Alexander Melamid in New York in 2007 when he moved into a studio next to mine. It was the time when Russian art market was flourishing. The New York Times business section was writing about millions paid by Russian collectors for Russian contemporary art at Sotheby’s and Phillips de Pury auctions. Melamid, who enjoyed a successful career in New York since 1978 working in tandem with Vitaliy Komar, saw for the first time his works sold for top dollars to Russian collectors. All of a sudden he realized that now they called him a “Russian artist”.

When the prices for oil tumbled, the Russian collectors stopped buying. Seeing the crash of the Russian market, Alexander Melamid walked into my studio and cried out: “I don’t want to be a Russian artist”. I asked him: “Who do you want to be?” and he provided me with a number of answers. Many of the answers reflected mixed fillings of an artist from Russia who has built a career in the West.

Melamid said that he wanted to be: The Queen of England A Rapper from Brooklyn A Japanese Samurai A Wall Street broker A cat A Sea Queen A Rhyme from Poetry Inspired by this idea I started painting dualistic portraits with the first painting entitled I Don’t Want to be a Russian Artist, I want to be the Queen of England, depicting the Queen and Alexander Melamid. Soon a painting entitled I don’t want to be a Russian Artist, I want to be a Chinese Artist depicting myself and Yue Minjun was created. I started applying the idea of dualistic portrait to a number of individuals and objects and the following paintings came about:

«Не хочу быть художником Русским...»

Комар и Меламид уехали на Запад в 1978 году и стали всемирно известными художниками в Нью-Йорке. На них смотрели как на современных художников из России. Запад расценивал их как равноправных интернациональных художников, которые имели очень интересную историю сопротивления Советскому режиму. Сам Меламид говорит про этот период так: «Мы были их [Запада] художники». Но когда произошла Перестройка, и кардинально изменилось отношение к искусству на пост-советском пространстве, появились новые тенденции, как в самом искусстве, так и в коллекционировании его. Это повлияло и на арт рынок. Возникновение непропорционально мощного интереса к современному искусству и наличие новой аристократии с большими финансовыми возможностями в России привело к тому, что ведущие аукционные дома мира выделили Русское Современное Искусство в отдельный сегмент. Меламид, ничего не подозревая и ведя спокойную жизнь Западного художника в Нью-Йорке, вдруг осознал что его перевели из категории «Интернациональный художник» в категорию «Русский художник». В конце 2007 года два художника разных волн эммиграции, Александр Меламид и Антон Скорубский [Кандинский] работали в своих мастерских, что находятся рядом и разделены тонкой перегородкой, по адресу 40 West 23rd Street, Chelsea, New York. Однажды Меламид неожиданно громко выкрикнул: «Не хочу быть художником Русским!» «А кем Вы хотите быть?», - спросил Антон. На что Меламид ответил, что он хочет быть: Королевой Английской Самураем Японским Гранатой-лимонкой Рэпером Американским Владычицею Морскою Имамом Мусульманским Папой Римским Слоном Тайландским Рифмой поэтичной Карьера художника на Западе не заключается в том, что он становится популярным на своей Родине. Однако это не значит, что отечественные музеи, кураторы, критики и коллекционеры не могут влиять на карьеру «ихнего»

художника что живет на Западе. Тут можно привести в пример непревзойденный глобальный успех таких национальных школ, как Новой Немецкое Искусство (Neue Deutsche Malerei) и Молодые Британские Художники (Young British Artists). Но я приведу пример, который мне кажется более ярким из-за своего контекста. Это пример успеха самого известного современного Китайского художника Цай Гуо-Цианг (Cai Guo-Qiang). Он родился в Китае в 1957 а в 1986 эмигрировал в Японию. Именно в Японии, где художник принял японское гражданство и где прожил до 1995 года, Гуо-Цианг стал всемирно известным как «Японский художник». Однако после эмиграции в Нью-Йорк в 1995 он сказал «Не хочу быть художником Японским, а хочу быть художником Китайским». И Китайским художником мирового значения Цай Гуо-Цианг стал! Его выставка в музее Гуггенхайма в Нью-Йорке, что прошла в 2008 году была второй самой успешной выставкой в истории музея, которую пришло посмотреть 341 000 посетителей. В конце-концов колоссальный успех художника отразился и на арт-рынке. Его работа «Drawing for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation» была продана в ноябре 2007 года за 9,5 миллионов долларов на аукционе Кристис в Гонк-Конге. Известно, что работы Гуо-Цианга покупают греческий коллекционер Дакис Жоанно (Dakis Joannou) и бывшая президент Музея Современного Искусства в Нью-Йорке, Агнес Ганд (Agnes Gund). Но вот на последнем аукционе Кристис современного Китайского искусства в Гонг-Конге, работа Гуо-Цианга «Berlin Wall: Project for Extraterrestrials No. 7» продалась за более чем миллион долларов, и купил ее коллекционер из Китая. Безусловно, современное русское искусство нашумело на Западе в последние три-четыре года. «Я в траве нашел жука, черный жук, блестящий...» - было самым «дорогим» из нашумевшего. Прошлогоднее: «Мы все вернем назад!», прозвучавшее в Москве, стало самым «громким» и докатилось до Нью-Йорка. Выставка «Россия» в музее Гуггенхайма в Нью-Йорке в 2005 году – пример масштабного мышления. Выставка «От Гласности до Современного» в Музее Современного Искусства в Челси в 2008 году (особенно экспозиции на первом и четвертом этажах) – пример современного мышления. Есть большая надежда, что ожидаемая выставка-презентация Премии Кандинского в Фонде Луизы Блоуин в Лондоне (Louise Blouin Foundation) что должна пройти в октябре этого года сможет обьединить все составные: современное, масштабное, громкое и дорогое. Так что отказываться от того, кто мы есть, не следует. Наоборот, при наличии соответственной поддержки и благоприятных обстоятельств, современное русское искусство на Западе может развиться в интернациональное явление, по силе не слабее китайского. И возможно, Меламид пройдя все этапы дуалистического перевоплощения в вышеуказаных героев, в конце воскликнет «Не хочу быть ..., а хочу быть художником Русским!»

THE SHADOW OF MELAMID The Shadow of Melamid painting was inspired by the New York Times article about the upcoming United Russia party election. Alex Melamid gave the article to Anton S. Kandinsky and asked him to create a painting depicting the scene. The painting was done in Southern-Russian style of neoimpressionism with dominating pink tone, which bears the sarcastic meaning. Melamid came to see the painting that was almost done and his shadow fell upon the work.

This shadow with the writing on it “Sots-art” is very symbolic. Sots-art is the art movement given its name by Vitaly Komar and Alex Melamid in 1972 in which socialist realism was taken up as a rich field of stereotypes and myths to be turned critically against official Soviet rhetoric. With his Sots-art shadow Melamid unintentionally touched upon the new Russian political system.

Alex Melamid, who separated with Vitaly Komar after 30 collaborative years, moved into a studio next to Anton S. Kandinsky on West 23rd Street in Chelsea in 2007. Kandinsky says: “Melamid inspired this painting because he is the link connecting the New York intellectual artistic circles with events of Putin’s triumph in contemporary Russia. The popularity of Putin in Russia is so great, that the pre-election campaign posters of the pro-Putin United Russia on display throughout Moscow were even bigger than the posters from the times of totalitarian communism. Everywhere you look you see Putin, Putin! Even the Time magazine selected Putin as the person of the year.”

The next day after reading the article in the New York Times, Melamid called Marat Guelman in Moscow and asked him to help with taking some photos of the enormous size posters. Melamid and Kandinsky wanted to do a series of works dedicated to United Russia propaganda posters. The elections took place on Sunday and by Monday morning all posters were removed. Unfortunately no photos of the posters were taken.

Back in time Sots-art was so strong that among other factors it caused the collapse of the Soviet System. But today it can only “cast a shadow” on the strong political system of modern Russia.

LA ROULETTE EN ROSE January 13 - February 13, 2011 The greatness of Kandinsky is his ability to usher in distinctive observation, malleable to his own free will. He has already taken charge of social realism and put it under his spell of covert intentions through the guise of an altered pop reality. Being a vestigial remnant of cold war politics now incongruous to his surroundings, Kandinsky has a reinvented purpose; that of a socio-political conscience. As he navigates, he brings us along for the ride in hopes of bettering our understanding of each other, shedding differences and kicking them aside.

Kandinskyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s motivation may seem at times unrelated and even mad,but is with great focus and precision. Once his philosophical language is allowed to ruminate all come to the same conclusion, eyes wide open.

Kandinsky harbors a niche among great thinkers as he confronts the world as painter and master satirist. As wry humorist and visual social commentator his unique perception of world politics and theoretical shifts of political mood not only intrigue, but reverberate. Let it not go be unsaid that Anton S. Kandinsky is the key to a better understanding of the intricate nature of Man and the world he lives in.

KANDINSKY VERSUS MIKHAILOV AT MOMA “Once you see the pictures from Case History they are impossible to forget,” wrote Eva Respini the curator of the current exhibition about Mikhailov’s documentation of the deeply troubled circumstances of homeless people - a new underclass that emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Morgan Meiers, also a curator described his response as: I felt lousy just looking at these photographs.

Surprisingly the Russian community in America has not responded to the fact that it is the first exhibition by a living Russian artist to be shown in one of the country’s highest ranking art institutions.

In this context the reaction of the New York based artist Anton Kandinsky has been the opposite. He has proved that the Mikhailov exhibition is a watershed moment in the way that Russian art has been perceived among American institutions. Adding to this fact there is also the exhibition Ostalgia – featuring artists from twenty countries across Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Republics, currently on view at the New Museum, (that includes Mikhailov) which highlights the need to examine art from this region again.

Ukraine-born, NYC based Kandinsky responded very emotionally when he wrote: I look at the pictures of Boris Mikhailov and the feelings inside of me push and pull at the same time, because I know what it is, about us.”

Kandinsky went further and took direct action, when he decided to intervene on the 3d floor photography section of MOMA. On June 24th (soon after the exhibition opened) he made three sets of posters on which he inscribed “The Russian ass to MoMA,” “Ukrainian asshole for MoMA», «Post-Soviet ass for MoMA» Holding these signs against the private parts of the Mikhailov’s subjects Kandinsky’s intention was to cover the scabby bottoms, wretched pudenda, the saggy old breasts, with the abbreviation MOMA. In his explanatory text Kandinsky explains that the juxtaposition of post-Soviet nakedness and the high institutional authority which MOMA bestows hit his emotions.

If Meiers felt distressed by seeing an intimate level of family association (The old woman showing us her wretched pudenda is someone’s grandmother, surely) Did I not think, for one panicky moment, of my own grandmother in observing that photo? He wrote, Kandinsky perceived these images as a derogative metaphor for his country. As an artist who exposes the legacy of the cold war in his paintings, he felt that this grubby image of Russian history had been over exposed in these twelve 10x4 feet large prints on display at MOMA. Kandinsky, being one generation younger than Mikhailov nevertheless identifies with the reality, which Mikhailov has captured so poignantly. This is why he has responded to a humane aspect of the images and is moved as an individual. He still retains a certain sentimental attachment with the county where he grew up and spent his formative years as an artist, (he studied at the Ukrainian Academy of Arts) and was appalled by its in the face cruel honesty. He talks about the sense of guilt he has, which was played off in this exhibition.

Kandinsky took his inspiration from Alex Melamid who inspired him with his signature style of a satiric blend of Socialist Realism and Western Pop Art. In 1998, Kandinsky moved to the U.S., where he expanded his style into a mix of iconic pop imagery, bringing together Russian and Western pop iconography. Certainly Mikhailov and Melamid work with the same subject matter to expose the disparate reality of Socialism. If Melamid depicts the apogee Mikhailov represents the nadir of Soviet society. Kandinsky works in between.

Moiseyenko 1975-1979 Crimean Art College, B.F.A. 1971-1975 Specialized Art School, Simferopol 1993-1997 lived and worked in Heidelberg, Germany Since 1998 lives and works in New York In 2004 in New York, Kandinsky founded a movement called “Gemism,” which refers to artist’s application of realistic images of luminescent gemstones on his canvases. The gemstones are intermingled with flags, ideograms, political fig­ures and celebrities along with symbolism from China, the former Soviet Union and American pop culture. Yet this is not straight Pop, nor is it Chinese art or some pastiche of Soviet-era propaganda. Gemism is a tip of the cap to all three.
