ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

I was born in the Wairarapa and grew up looking at the land and have never stopped.

The first four years of my life were spent in a tiny rural settlement deep in the hills east of Masterton. I still retain a conscious memory of those first earliest years which continue to inform my perception now.

The process of my work is for me like a visual diary hence my paintings are often in sequential series . The use of both oil and acrylic paints offering me differing qualities which I enjoy applying to different subjects.

I commenced painting full-time in 1990 and since then have exhibited on a regular basis at leading galleries throughout New Zealand. My work is held in various public collections including the NZ Parliamentary Collection, Waikato Museum of Art & History, the Auckland University of Technology along with inclusion in numerous private and corporate collections throughout New Zealand and overseas. I am passionately and spiritually connected to Aotearoa New Zealand and our unique natural environment which forms the basis of my focus as a NZ painter of the land.

Who and what inspires your artwork?

”My primary inspiration is drawn from this unique and utterly diverse land, Aotearoa New Zealand which I’m privileged to call home. I never tire of what I see around me here and am constantly surprised by new and different things each day. Over the years, I’ve undertaken overseas study trips to observe the work of international artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, David Hockney, and others up close.”

What can we expect to see in this upcoming exhibition?

“This upcoming exhibition features a collection of works that reflect my journey and its visual narrative. I’ve focused in particular on elements of our native and introduced flora, using them as a foreground to what lies beyond.”

Any big career highlights or standout moments so far?

“One major career highlight in the past two to three years was the opportunity to exhibit in the New Zealand Houses of Parliament. Alongside this, I gain great satisfaction from working one-on-one with collectors and engaging with their thoughts and feelings an aspect of my career I’ve never tired of and always find an inspiring challenge.”
