CATHERINE ROBERTS

Who and what inspires your artwork?

Colour! In my studio, in my day-to-day, just anywhere in my life.

In particular the combinations of colours I stumble upon. This winter, I’ve drawn a lot of inspiration from my knitwear & accessories. What do you think draws collectors to your art?

My pieces are often multilayered, featuring different depths and detail - the longer you look, the more you see. The abstract nature of my work leaves it very open to the interpretation of its viewer. I feel that different people will pick up and focus on different elements of my work and evoke different feelings toward it.

Tell us more about your creative process?

My process is an organic, intuitive progression. Starting loosely with a colour combination and the style I’m working with at that time. Often my paintings are a bit of a surprise to me at the end. I find and fall in love with unexpected colour combinations and special areas of my work, taking those and developing them on new pieces of their own.

I use acrylic paints and resin, and at times, modelling texture and inks.

Any big career highlights or standout moments so far?

I’ve been painting for over 25 years, and in this past year I’ve found more bravery than ever to really experiment with my work. This is more of a personal highlight than a public standout moment, but has been pivotal and given me a lot of inspiration for this exhibition and my future work.

What can people look forward to in this upcoming show?

Throughout my journey in building this group of work, I’ve redeveloped some of my techniques, allowing playfulness and experimentation with my tried-and-true layers, colours and forms. These pieces are bold and spirited, featuring many openings into little pockets of colour and detail that I have fallen in love with. I’m looking forward to sharing them together as a family of works.
