Van Dop Arts & Cultural Guide to BC

hen you have had the good fortune of spending your entire life in a province like British Columbia it is easy to be spoiled. Sure, other countries have their charms: New Zealand their fjords, Mexico their beaches, but when I return home, circling Vancouver’s inner harbour, I never cease to let out an untethered sigh. I am home.

Here the mountains leap from an ocean floor, ancient cedars stretch the length of our borders, and towns and cities nestle lakes, rivers, streams and inlets. Simply put, British Columbia is the best place on earth. While the outdoor beauty of BC is second-to-none, it’s the arts and heritage of this province that keeps me packing up my bags and heading out to explore.

It is easy for me to choose British Columbia over luxe cross-continental getaways. While the streets of Paris are brim with l’amour, there’s a price to match. As the second largest country in the world, there are 9,984,670 kilometres to explore in Canada, and with more than 24,000 artists in BC alone, the creative getaways are limitless. When communities preserve their heritage they steward their story. There is not one of us who travel this incredible province that doesn’t make a point of looking for the local museum and historic site to spend time trying to trace the history of the unique communities that make up our province.

Though British Columbia is young, its history is rich. From the hallowed hallways of Emily Carr House in Victoria to the “Big House” at Fort Langley where the Father of British Columbia James Douglas held the ceremony proclaiming the establishment of British Columbia, the characters from BC’s past have touched all corners of this province. There are many public artworks to be explored at any time of day; begin by finding the 22 Mosaic Art Tiles placed throughout the Downtown area. You will find the first one located just outside the entrance to Cathedral Place.

Use page 13 as a reference to discover the rest. Starting at 639 Hornby near the corner of Georgia and Hornby with the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art in Cathedral Place. Its calming courtyard and exquisite architecture make this downtown location a must visit and excellent starting point.

The north-east corner of Hornby and Georgia, you will find the Pendulum Gallery in the atrium of the HSBC Bank. Look up and you will see where the name came from. Across Georgia Street you will find the Vancouver Art Gallery, housed in the former provincial courthouse. Back on Georgia, turn north on to Howe Street and visit the Howe Street Gallery (555) followed by the Dorian Rae Collection located at 410 Howe. Further north on Howe (323) visit the Rendezvous Gallery with its large collection of Canadian artists. Continue north towards the water and then west until you are at Burrard. Marvel at the award-winning Vancouver Convention Centre, renowned as a green-designed, state-of-the-art facility on the waterfront. Enjoy the public artworks you will find around the building.

n rural towns and urban centres across BC you can spend a whole day admiring vast canvases and 3-D installations by the best of BC’s artists ... and never step foot inside. Our parks have become galleries without borders, our storefronts have become blank canvases for local brushstrokes, and even sidewalks have us treading on art from the ground up. Look around, and you’ll find that BC’s beautiful landscape is merely the backdrop, the gallery walls, containing the most amazing local art. Murals have added renewed colour to community cores, painting a trail of historical images and urban cultural identity in hundreds of snapshots of Canadian cultural life. Visit Chemainus, known as “Muraltown” (pg 76), to take in one of the most established outdoor art galleries in BC. Chemainus is famous for its open-air murals, bringing new vitality to a town threatened by the collapse of its main economic support, the mill. Chemainus now has over Paul Ygartua, Chemainus three dozen murals featuring images of historic figures and life in the early years. Chemainus is host to the 2012 Global Mural Conference, capturing international acclaim. Downtown Vernon (pg 100) also boasts one of the largest outdoor public art galleries in Canada with over 25 murals that portray the culture, history and scenery that are Vernon’s cultural identity. Port Coquitlam’s (pg 53) vibrant cultural heritage is reflected in the nine murals that speckle its downtown core, and Surrey boasts Canada’s largest mural by Vancouver’s own Paul Ygartua (pg 65). Communities such as Penticton (pg 110) and Merritt (pg 96) have a more contemporary feel, depicting current cultural icons and encouraging the use of graffiti-style art. Merritt offers a trail of images through time, celebrating its quintessential western lifestyle alongside images of the biggest names in country music.

A quick Google search on the internet will show you the large and creative sculptor community that lives and works here. Our sculptors are recognized worldwide in astonishing numbers. From award-winning works at the Venice Biennale, to monumental commissioned sculpture pieces here at home, our BC sculptors represent our province in a way we may all be proud. The realm of public art is growing in many of our communities. Public Art Programs are popping up almost like mushrooms in many communities around BC. Many communities showcase their collections, often as walking tours with information at visitor centres and often on the internet.

Some communities have bought into public art in a big way. The town of Castlegar for example has an annual Sculpture Walk, featuring a sculpture competition which exhibits many sculptures in the downtown area over the summer months. Some of these sculptures are purchased and left

permanently as part of Castlegar’s public art collection. BC’s sculptural scene is dynamic and enriching. Many people involve sculpture as high notes in their travel plans. Okanagan Thompson International Sculpture Symposium (OTISS) created and placed 20 monumental sculptures in 8 communities, inspiring many to make a sculptural pilgrimage from Osoyoos to Kamloops, visiting these unique pieces. Be a lifelong collector. Whether you’ve realized it or not, you have been building your personal collection all your life. Notice patterns; maybe it’s time for a change.

Just have to have it? When you personally connect with a piece of art, take it home. Having it in your own space is an entirely different experience than looking at it in a gallery. (Most galleries have a lending policy.) Once you have it in the perfect place you’ll treasure it forever.

Collect in series. Artists often create series of work but rarely are pieces identical. When you buy a piece of art you love, ask the gallery to contact you when they receive new work from this artist. You’ll be the first to know when new items arrive and can have your pick of the artist’s inspiring new creations.

soyoos is a delightful, unexpected place. After all, nowhere else in Canada will you find parched hills of windswept sage, vineyards lush with promise, and a desert ecology that’s so anomalous in a province known for its rainforests. hen Billy Barker struck gold on Williams Creek in 1862 he probably couldn’t have predicted how many thousands of prospectors would travel great distances for a shot at becoming rich. Barkerville boomed between 1862 and 1870, with more than 100,000 people traveling on the Cariboo Wagon Road to work on the gold fields. Barkerville was once a bustling city filled with traffic, people, excitement and optimism — it didn’t take long to become the largest city west of Chicago and north of San Francisco. The historic town of Barkerville is now BC’s largest living museum and t Curling Pa by o ot Ph hosts more than 65,000 guests throughout the summer. Walk down the streets where miners once walked, take a stagecoach ride, and interact with the costumed interpretive staff. The Chinese community was an integral part of Barkerville life for nearly 100 years. They established a number of businesses, including the Kwong Lee Company, a general store that sold groceries, clothing, hardware, and mining tools. The Chinese community also built cabins for Chinese miners and Tai Ping (the “Peace Room”) a nursing facility for the elderly. Visiting Barkerville is truly like going back in time, with more than 125 heritage buildings, live theatre and demonstrations. eciphering the number of artists in British Columbia requires a lot of fancy guesswork, and it’s likely we’re getting the number far too small. Still, by all provincial accounting, BC stands as the most cultured part of the country with over 24,000 artists in residence, more than any other province in Canada. Some artists prefer the life of the recluse, living in handmade huts among the Arbutus trees. Others swim in the culture pond, engaging audiences and colleagues with their creative repertoire. Whatever the locale and whichever the medium, British Columbia’s borders are brimming with talent. From Inges Idee’s slender abstracted rain droplet: The Drop, a laconic landmark representing Vancouver’s wetscape, to Vernon’s charming wall-side murals, the variety in this province is breathtaking. Making is in. Craft collectives like Bowen Island’s Hive are becoming commonplace. Horsefly Manor, a tiny cabin in the woods above the south shore of Quesnel Lake in the Cariboo Mountains, is a shared writer’s retreat. Vancouverites feeling the urge to make, head to the likes of Blim, a shared art space in the heart of Chinatown where you can take bookbindery, life drawing or screen printing workshops. Each city has a hometown Arts Council and other, more organic, arts collectives formed around shared mediums, interests, or age. Some of the best places to discover new artists’ work is at farmer’s markets, local galleries, art walks, and at events like Vancouver’s annual Cheaper Show. Driving through BC you’ll also spot white and blue signs advertising ‘Artisan.’ Follow your nose and you’ll soon be dropping in on the home studio of a local maker. Local pottery studios are an excellent place to buy gorgeous handmade bowls, sculptures, plates or teapots. Whether you’re seeking Haida Gwaii carvings, contemporary canvases, or classic ceramics, British Columbia is yours for the making.
