Surgical Platforms Surgical services, whether provided on the hospital campus or in a surgical center, are integral to a health system’s service lines. A robust surgical service attracts referring physicians as well as patients, and is often a patient’s first impression of the health system’s quality outside of routine physician visits.

Capital Health Hopewell Medical Center Pennington, New Jersey

Array Architects, in association with HKS, Inc., designed a state-of-the-art 237-bed Replacement Hospital for Capital Health. Collaborating with Anchor Health Properties (Developer and Owner’s Representative), the design team was tasked with designing a facility that elicits a “Wow, I can’t believe this is a hospital!” To achieve this goal, the new facility features a Concierge Pavilion, a Diagnostic Treatment and Support Building and a Patient Tower all connected by atriums with healing gardens. A Medical Office Building is also joined to the hospital by a two level pedestrian mall. The main hospital contains an Interventional Radiology area with four rooms plus one CT and an eight-position Stage 1 recovery area. The Interventional Radiology Department shares a 25 room prep/recovery area with surgery. Ten surgical suites, one of which is a hybrid OR, are also located in the main hospital. A 12 position PACU is adjacent to an ambulatory prep/recovery area that contains 25 private rooms with shared toilet rooms. Procedural Endoscopy with five rooms contains three endoscopy, one ERCP and one bronchoscopy room with a 10 position prep/recovery area. Oncology Infusion programs are vertically connected by the lobby atrium and pedestrian mall. The infusion bays have access to and views of a roof garden developed over the Cancer Center’s first floor with a coffee bar adjacent to the roof garden. An additional second floor function accessed from the mall is a four-OR ambulatory surgery suite. Waiting Photography: Blake Marvin/HKS, Inc.

Nemours / Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children Multi-Specialty Outpatient Center Deptford, New Jersey When this national children’s hospital decided to move into a new market, they needed move quickly. As with all ambulatory projects in today’s competitive environment, being first to market with the right product at the right cost is critical. Patient and Family focused design in the context of maximum efficiency is the hallmark of the final Ambulatory project and was achieved through a rigorous process to define target outcomes and then test solutions. Current and Future State process mapping, Data Collection, Visual Programming, Experience Mapping and Continuous Stakeholder Engagement are cornerstone tools used to ensure the right space was built at the right size at the right time. With the rapid evolution of care and reimbursement models and the uncertainty of the future, a flexible and adaptable platform was created to be viable today and tomorrow.

Shifting the paradigm to create a new, integrated multi-specialty outpatient center. Array’s Process-led design approach rapidly defined and designed a new, fully integrated multi-specialty outpatient center that features flexible provider clinics, physical therapy, diagnostic imaging, wellness, and ambulatory surgery. Our approach, using Lean as a foundation, allowed Nemours to work through complex questions about integration, resource deployment, and business/revenue implications while studying physical configurations and cost structures to support them. All of this was achieved without sacrificing commitment to capital budget objectives as well as schedule. Patient and Family focused design in the context of maximum efficiency is the hallmark of the final project and was achieved through a rigorous process to define target outcomes and then test solutions. Current and Future State process mapping, Data Collection, Visual Programming, Experience Mapping, and Continuous Stakeholder Engagement are cornerstone tools used to ensure Nemours built the right space at the right size at the right time. Staffing efficiencies, provider load, throughput, and technology were integrated into the architecture process. Montefiore Medical Center Ambulatory Surgery Center Bronx, New York

Montefiore Medical Center selected Array to consolidate ambulatory services from three campuses and outpatient clinics into a new state-of-the-art Ambulatory Tower that would become the benchmark for their expanding Ambulatory Care services. Array provided planning and design services for a new 12-story Ambulatory Surgical Center on a site that received prior zoning approval for a hotel. To avoid obtaining a variance, which would result in significant cost and delays, the footprint and setbacks could not be altered. Array developed a unique design solution incorporating dedicated elevators for staff and materials within the operating suites and support areas. Although the 12 ORs and four procedure rooms (sized to become additional ORs if needed) are split between three floors, simulation modeling showed that the dedicated elevators facilitated patient flow and reduced room turnaround time.

Technical Development

“I find the practice of healthcare architecture truly motivating; the study and development of the relationship between the architectural setting and patient experience allows us to have a quantifiable impact on the patients’ well-being.” Tim Nichols, CDT Practice Leader, Architecture

St. Elizabeth Healthcare Ambulatory, Surgery and Urgent Care Center Dearborn, IN The System’s expansion into Indiana begins with an 75,000 SF MOB and Ambulatory Surgery Center which will house imaging, physician offices, specialty clinics as well as an after-hours Urgent Care Clinic. Specialties such as orthopedics, cardiology, nephrology and women’s services are included in the early planning by the St. Elizabeth Physician Group. “St. Elizabeth Physicians is excited about this opportunity to enhance the services provided to our patients living and working in Southeastern Indiana and Southwestern Ohio,” Jacob Bast, chief operating officer of the physician group, told The Cincinnati Business Courier. “The expanded services and additional access to primary care will further support our commitment to connected and coordinated care.”

St. John Medical Center Patient Services & Surgery Addition Westlake, Ohio As a result of St. John’s Strategic Facility Master Plan, it was determined that key Medical Center services were in need of expansion and modernization to support the quantitative demand and qualitative vision for the future. In addition to investment aimed at accommodating projected inpatient demand and improving the patient experience for all services on campus, surgery lacked capacity and space to meet future volumes. Array worked with the Medical Center and a team of consultants to develop the Master Plan into an Implementation Plan; including development of floor plans and detailed project budgeting. Array prepared and reviewed with user groups “test-fit” floor plans for a new Outpatient Entrance with first floor outpatient functions and a dedicated elevator leading up to Same Day Surgery Center, located in existing shelled space. In addition to enhanced family waiting and amenities, the new layout provides three-walled patient Prep/Recovery positions to address desired patient privacy while supporting staff workflow and efficiencies. Additional new construction provides a first floor Clinical Decision Unit adjacent to the Emergency Department, and provides valuable second floor space for a new PACU and Endoscopy Unit; adjacent to the new Prep/Recovery Unit. Extraction of these services from the existing Surgery Suite space provides space for the addition of four new Operating Rooms, expanded support and storage and improved provider facilities.

UPHS Chester County Hospital Ambulatory Care Center Jennersville, Pennsylvania In conjunction with Anchor Health Properties, University of Pennsylvania Health System and Chester County Hospital , Array has designed a 70,000 SF ambulatory care facility 15 miles from the main Chester County Hospital campus. The design features a “Main Street service line access corridor for a patient friendly circulation system. First floor services include Imaging (MRI, CT, Mammography, Ultrasound and Radiology), Physical Therapy, Blood Lab, primary and specialty care clinics. Second floor services include an Eye Clinic and leasable space. The site promotes health and wellness through an integrated plan that includes healing gardens around the perimeter of the center, a wellness path and rest areas. The wellness path loops through open spaces to the east of the building and around the wooded wetland areas and storm water management basin and incorporates rest areas with parkbench seating. Anchor Health Properties, Chester County Hospital and Array held an extensive visioning session and visited local gardens and farms to gain inspiration for the landscape surrounding the ambulatory care center. To encourage patients to use the facility to its fullest potential, a full-service bistro is included at the main entrance. This allows a restful place for a break, with inside and outdoor seating, making multiple visits in one trip easier for the whole family. Several different waiting areas allow families comfortable spaces to congregate.
