A modern, 160,000 SF, cutting-edge development at a prominent intersection in Brooklyn, provides a comprehensive care experience for the community. With major highway access, subway stations and high-traffic bus routes, the building truly serves to expand this Health System’s services to a large population. The neighborhood care center occupies a portion of the first floor with its own entrance while connecting internally to specialty services. The folded articulation of the glass in the upper stories respond to solar heat gain by self-shading with tinted reflective glass sloping upward and clearer glass below allowing sweeping views of the skyline. The rippling effect transfers below to a perforated metal cloud shrouding the parking deck while allowing light and air to flow through. At night, the whole building-the tallest in the area-glows as a beacon. Parking and patient drop-off are raised to the second floor, allowing the sloped canopy to pull pedestrians in at the first floor level. Vehicular traffic can flow through the building, dropping passengers off at the 2nd floor Lobby and continuing out to street level. The facade was fabricated as a modular system allowing for a simplified install from the interior of the building, reducing street closure logistics.

Array was selected as part of an integrated team to provide planning and design services for the replacement of Inspira Health’s Woodbury hospital. After selection, Inspira asked Array to lead a rapid assessment phase integrating their strategic plan, financial projections, and operational goals along with site and cost analysis to determine if the replacement hospital should remain on the existing site or move to a new site in the service area. After determining a new site would best serve the health system’s goals, Array began our Process-led Lean Design approach to program and plan the new facility. Cross functional work sessions were held with each team to map the current state flows of every department. Armed with a detailed assessment, we worked with the teams to develop the ideal future state and work flows for the new facility. The facility features a split flow emergency department that includes an integrated pediatrics sub-unit including observation and inpatient beds. The surgical and procedural areas have been combined into a universal interventional platform to promote flexibility and efficiency. All patient care units are designed with staff effectiveness and safety in mind. Family and patient comfort is incorporated through large windows, distributed pockets of waiting and respite, a single point of check-in an registration for all visits and visitors, outdoor dining and garden areas, as well as a technology hub in the lobby to assist patients and families with personal health technology devices and integration.

By embarking on a highly-collaborative structure from the outset, the integrated team identified methodologies that have resulted in a significant square footage reduction from the original benchmarked program, as well as defining a schedule that resulted in an operational facility within 33 months from the start of design.

When a national children’s hospital decided to move into a new market, they needed to move quickly. As with all ambulatory projects in today’s competitive environment, being first to market with the right product at the right cost is critical. But it’s tough to move quickly when you are building a project unlike any other you have in your system. Array Architects and Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children used a Process-led design approach to rapidly define and design a new, fully integrated multispecialty outpatient center that features flexible provider clinics, physical therapy, diagnostic imaging, wellness, and ambulatory surgery. Our approach, using Lean as a foundation, allowed Nemours to work through complex questions about integration, resource deployment, and business/revenue implications while studying physical configurations and cost structures to support them. All of this was achieved without sacrificing commitment to capital budget objectives as well as schedule.

Process-led design employs a rigorous and engaging approach to quickly define goals and obstacles. Process-before-design encourages the integrated team to focus on experience, quality, outcomes, and work flow before specific spatial configurations begin to limit innovation. Process mapping, visual programming, virtual and physical mock ups and rapid prototyping were used in parallel during the early design phases to ensure the optimal solution.

Jefferson Health engaged Array to provide design services intended to expand the services provided at the Navy Yard by renovating the existing building located at 3 Crescent Drive. The hospital’s vision for the facility was to have a consumer-oriented health, home and regional health care destination. Goals of the project included creation of adaptable, interchangeable spaces that allow for flexibility as needs and volumes change. Services were carefully chosen to complement each other and attract the growing young population in the area. Specialties include Primary Care, Women’s Health, Men’s Health, Cardiology, Dermatology, Neurology, Pain Management, ENT, Audiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), Medical Sub-specialties, and Surgical Sub-specialties. Support services provided in the building in an outpatient setting include Specimen Collection, Retail Pharmacy and Imaging.

Looking ahead to continued high census and increased demand for specialized inpatient spaces, Johns Hopkins Health System engaged Array to provide programming, conceptual and schematic planning, exterior design and scoping of backfill renovation work for the Bayview Medical Center campus. Array and JHHS/Bayview leadership collaborated to design a new addition to include:

In conjunction with Anchor Health Properties and Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, Array designed a new ambulatory care campus built on approximately eight acres adjacent to the medical center. This new interdisciplinary development features, in its first phase, an integrated medical home model multi-specialty health and wellness center and a cancer center. The project features cross-disciplinary care coordination and a unified patient experience while being a market differentiator for the Vero Beach community. The Wellness Center is designed to promote prevention, education and healthy living in addition to providing specialty care, chronic disease management, diagnostic imaging and primary care. Customer service is highlighted throughout the operations from registration and greeting through the visit, which is designed to promote multiple encounters in a single visit. A universal clinic design allows for flexibility by session across all of the medical and surgical subspecialties. Along with the new outpatient center, the Health System engaged the same design team to bring a new Cancer Center to the community. The new ScullyWelsh Cancer Center, affiliated with Duke University, brings state-of-the-art, compassionate care to the Indian River community. The Cancer Center features multi-modality clinics, integrated treatment planning, infusion, radiation therapy, pharmacy, resource and education programs and access to clinical trials and research. At its core, the program and its facility seek to treat the whole patient and their family. Our operational improvement focus during early design led to a 45-minute reduction in the average length of stay for all infusion patients. Designed to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and connections, a healing garden with outdoor dining opportunities forms the pedestrian link between the Cancer Center and Health & Wellness Center. The Cancer Center establishes the Hospital’s brand for the expanded cancer program through the design of both the patient experience and the building. Together, the Cancer Center and the Health & Wellness Center form a new outpatient campus conveying Cleveland Clinic’s strong brand and the comprehensive care available.

The renovation of this building increases NYU Lutheran Medical Center’s ability to serve their community’s oncology treatment needs closer to home. Two linear accelerators and 24 infusion bays, in a densely populated neighborhood of Brooklyn would not have been possible if the client was not able to invest in an existing structure. The nondescript garage/storage facility will benefit from a new, contemporary facade and soaring windows to draw passersby to the location. Included in the design is a USP 800 pharmacy, allowing clinicians to treat patient efficiently with on-site pharmaceutical mixing. All new mechanical systems will be provided to optimize comfort, efficiency and equipment life cycle.

Providing more than 1,500 beds, University Hospitals (UH) is one of the largest and most respected health systems in the country. With the goal of increasing quality, market share, efficiency and improving their Centers of Excellence, UH recognized the need for a System-Wide Facilities Master Plan that would pinpoint areas for strategic growth, identify obsolete facilities and provide a phasing and implementation plan to align their facilities with their long-term growth strategies.

Array provided facilities master and implementation planning, design and interior design for more than 50 projects across the University Hospitals system. We conducted comprehensive site, facilities and infrastructure analysis of every building at each of University Hospitals’ 15 campuses, and ranked each building based on its value for future use. Building on a strategic plan prioritizing services, we provided programming, test-fit planning, detailed project budgeting and enabling projects identification that resulted in the construction of four new projects totaling $500 million. The System-Wide Facilities Master Plan allowed UH to identify the locations for multiple projects including a greenfield hospital to expand their reach, and a replacement Cancer Hospital, sited to increase efficiency and interface with existing surgical platform. An expanded Emergency Department was identified to improve connectivity to the hospital, increase patient through-put and reduce wait times. Overcoming the limitation of available contiguous space, a new 50-bed, Level III NICU was planned in an area that spanned three adjacent buildings.

One of just 12 freestanding cancer hospitals in the nation designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute, the new, 120-bed, 10-story, 370,000 SF University Hospitals’ Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland, Ohio, is designed to support all aspects of the healing process. As part of a system-wide Facilities Master Plan, University Hospitals engaged Array to provide programming and planning services for a new Cancer Hospital to centralize the various cancer care components that were dispersed throughout their 4-city block campus in downtown Cleveland. Array partnered with Cannon Design who served as Architect of Record and set the vision and design for the building envelope Array led the interior architecture and design and shared in the departmental programming and planning. Designed with clear exterior and interior circulation paths, the building improves spatial orientation for oncology patients under high levels of stress. Care areas are organized to treat specific patient populations. Well-conceived floor plans and attention to detail in the clinical zones afford efficient, optimal work environments for caregivers. The facility incorporates space for clinical trials, diagnostics, outpatient and inpatient treatment, surgery, patient education programs, radiation oncology, infusion therapy and teaching space. Translucency and luminosity are key design elements - the way daylight enters and is filtered deep within the building contributes to a tranquil, healing environment designed specifically for cancer patients. This attention to design detail is evident in a letter from a patient’s husband in which he explains: “Recently my wife was a patient at Seidman Cancer Center. Our experience there, although unpleasant by nature, was certainly enhanced by the environment your firm has created. The attention to detail in everything from the patient rooms to the waiting spaces most definitely has a positive role in the healing process. Array was engaged to provide operational improvement, programming and design services for the fit-out of a Cancer Research Building on the new campus of the Miami Cancer Institute for Baptist Health South Florida. The Institute, affiliated with Memorial Sloan Kettering, provides improved patient access to treatment and advanced protocols. The new program consists of clinical trials, a genomics lab, a USP 800 pharmacy, outpatient bone marrow transplantation, integrated palliative care and many sub-specialty clinics. As the delivery of oncology services drives a tighter connection between research and clinical care, this building represents the unifying program of spaces in that equation. Our Lean approach factored that several Principal Investigators and Program Leads were not yet on board - flexibility was paramount. During future state mapping and rapid testing each workflow and space was studied, tested, and crafted to represent the balance between integrated research and exemplary patient care. Array developed unique Empathy and Journey mapping exercises to help the clinical leads and design team alike gain deep insight around the cultural expectations of MCI’s broad Miami and International patient base. This resulted in the creation of expansive and light-filled gathering zones and more intimate ‘living rooms’ with adjacent nourishment amenities. MCI committed to patient and family engagement in holistic realms of healthcare as it sought to redefine the characteristics and environment for palliative care, connecting clinical trial patients to a support system affording patient understanding, choice and dignity. The new building stands as a hallmark for holistic, integrated cancer care.

Collaborating with Anchor Health Properties (Developer and Owner’s Representative), the design team was tasked with designing a facility that elicits a “Wow, I can’t believe this is a hospital!” To bring the delivery of healthcare hospitality to a new level, the facility features a patient tower, PAGE 62

Patient safety, family-focused care and operational efficiency are the design drivers. The design team has segregated inpatient and outpatient flow to support an exceptional patient experience. HKS, Inc. was the Architect of Record; Array provided programming, department-specific planning, corporate architecture, interior architecture and interior design services to this project.

With a tight urban campus occupying more than three NYC blocks, NYP Columbia commissioned Array to modernize and upgrade their 10-story Milstein inpatient tower to support clinical efficiency, improve wayfinding to ensure NYP Columbia was positioned to deliver a patient experience in an environment in sync with their world-class reputation. Recognizing the need to work within their budget and maintain system-wide parity, we conducted benchmarking tours with key hospital personnel at both the Columbia and the Cornell Campuses. Immediately following the benchmarking tours, Array scheduled Workshop Sessions with key personnel to develop consensus regarding clinical scope, infrastructure investment and wayfinding elements.

The renovation will positively impact clinical care, nursing efficiencies, staff collaboration, and patient amenities. Improvements include a de-centralized nursing model, upgrades to patient room head and foot walls, and fully renovated patient toilet rooms. Revitalized elevator lobbies at each inpatient floor set the tone and expectation f=or each arriving visitor of a superior experience. Dramatic and vibrant art will complement strong wayfinding elements, helping visitors and staff navigate each distinct patient unit.

Columbia University Medical Center engaged Array Architects to expand their medical practice in Tarrytown, New York. The expanded practice includes a new vestibule with a canopy to provide convenient access from the parking area. The floor plan facilitates collaboration among physicians and is laid out with patients’ needs in mind. Color coordinated signage and accent walls help patients navigate the facility. The project was carried out in two phases: phase 1 included the renovation of the first floor in the West Building to offer comprehensive medical care, including radiology, cardiology, ortho, rehab, neurology, surgery, lab and staff support. The medical practice is outfitted with a suite of diagnostic imaging services - CT and MRI, IR, fluoroscopy, ultrasound plus 22 exam rooms and rooms equipped for such procedures as cardiac stress tests.

Montefiore Medical Center selected Array to consolidate ambulatory services from three campuses and outpatient clinics into a new, state-of-the-art Ambulatory Tower that would become the benchmark for their expanding Ambulatory Care services. Array provided planning and design services for a new 12-story Ambulatory Surgical Center on a site that received prior zoning approval for a hotel. To avoid obtaining a variance, which would result in significant cost and delays, we could not alter the footprint and setbacks. Array developed a unique design solution incorporating dedicated elevators for staff and materials within the operating suites and support areas. Although the 12 ORs and four procedure rooms (sized to become additional ORs if needed) are split between three floors, simulation modeling showed that the dedicated elevators facilitated patient flow and reduced room turnaround time.
