We thought the building of the observatory as an urban piece embedded in the topography that surrounds the city of Bilbao. Considering this, the project is developed around three fundamental concepts.
The first one is framing the landscape, as we understand that nature becomes a landscape when people frame it. The directed concrete walls allow the user to contemplate certain portions of the natural and urban landscape from different parts of the project.
Secondly, and related with the first concept, the project intends be part of a journey in its inside. The user gradually moves through the building, starting from the square at the top and goes inside the building, where along the longitudinal axis they will encounter spaces of different scales and functions.
Lastly, the roof is considered as a fifth accessible façade. Its sloped form allowed us to project steps toward the public space surrounding the viewpoint, converting it as an amphitheater where diverse activities can take place.
The formal concept of the project consists of walls inserted into the topography, responsible for dividing the interior and exterior spaces. These walls are materialized in reinforced concrete, like a rock emerging from another rock.
Entendemos al edificio de la cafetería-observatorio como una pieza urbana inserta en la topografía que circunda la ciudad de Bilbao. Teniendo en cuenta esto el proyecto se genera en torno a tres conceptos fundamentales.
El primero de ellos, contemplar el paisaje enmarcando, ya que entendemos que la naturaleza se hace paisaje cuando el hombre la enmarca. Los muros direccionados permiten al usuario contemplar ciertas porciones del paisaje natural y urbano desde diversos sectores del edificio.
En segundo lugar, y en relación con el primer punto, generar un recorrido. El usuario recorre poco a poco el edificio desde la plaza en la cota alta hasta ingresar al mismo donde en el sentido longitudinal se irán encontrando los espacios de distinta escala y función.
Por último, considerar a la cubierta como una quinta fachada accesible. La inclinación de esta permite generar gradas hacia el espacio público que circunda el mirador, a manera de anfiteatro donde pueden llevarse a cabo diversas actividades.
El concepto formal del proyecto se compone de muros insertos en la topografía, encargados de generar la división de espacios interiores y exteriores. Los mismo se materializan en hormigón armado como una roca que sale de otra roca.
