Un jour, à Havai-i-te-pō, à Opoa, les Dieux mirent en place une interdiction sacrée : Aucun coq ne devait chanter, aucun chien ne devait aboyer ; aucun animal, aucun homme ne devait faire de bruit ni se déplacer.

Tout était calme, silencieux !

In Havai-i-te-po, in Opoa, the Gods set a sacred ban: No rooster was allowed to sing, no dog was allowed to bark; all animals were to stay still and quiet, even the humans were forbidden to make noise or to move out of their homes. Everything was calm and silent!

I te ho’e mahana, ua opua ihora o Tehere, te ho’e potii nehenehe roa e faaroo ore i te faa’otiraa a te mau Atua.

Ua haere oia e hapu i roto i te anavai i piha’i’iho i te fare.

Un jour, une belle jeune fille, nommée Terehe, décida de désobéir aux ordres des Dieux. Elle alla se baigner dans la rivière près de la maison.

One day, a beautiful girl, named Terehe, decided to disobey the Gods commands.

She went to bathe in the river near the house.

Riri aera te mau Atua, pifao aera ratou ia Terehe e ua paremo oia.

I tera taime, ua fā maira te ho’e puhi mai roto mai i te ho’e apoo e ua horomii ia Terehe.

Les Dieux se fâchèrent et paralysèrent Terehe qui se noya.

C’est alors qu’une anguille gigantesque sortit d’un trou et avala d’un seul coup Terehe.

The Gods got angry and paralyzed Terehe who drowned.

A gigantic eel came out of a hole and swallowed Terehe.

Tera ra, ua uru te puhi i te varua o Terehe e ua taehae ihora oia. Riro aera te tino o te puhi i te ho’e i’a iti rahi o tei imi i te ho’e e’a i roto i te hohonuraa o te fenua. Tei Opoa tona upoo ; tei te atea i tai roa ia Uporu tona hiū.

E ua haere atura teie i’a na ni’a i te miti.

Haere maira o Turahunui, te ho’e aito a Taaroa, e arata’i i teie i’a i tona haere’a.

Tei ni’a oia i te upoo o te i’a e ua arata’i oia ia na i te hitiaa o te ra. Ho’i atura i Opoa i te apooraa a te mau Atua.

Mais l’anguille fut possédée par l’esprit de Terehe et devint enragée.

Le corps de l’anguille se transforma en un énorme poisson qui se fraya un passage dans les profondeurs des terres.

La tête se trouvait à Opoa, la queue s’étendait loin au-delà de Uporu (aujourd’hui Tahaa).

Et le poisson se mit à voyager en mer.

Le grand sorcier Turahunui, artisan du Dieu Taaroa, guida le poisson sur son parcours ; il se tenait sur sa tête pendant qu’il se déplaçait et le dirigea vers l’Est. Après quoi, il retourna à l’Assemblée des Dieux à Opoa.

However, the eel was possessed by Terehe's spirit and became enraged. The body of the eel turned into a huge fish that made its way into deep inland. The head was in Opoa, the tail extended far beyond Uporu (now Tahaa). And the fish began to travel at sea.

The great wizard Turahunui, craftsman of the God Taaroa, guided the fish on his journey; he was standing on his head as he moved and steered him to the east.

After which, he returned to the Assembly of Gods in Opoa.

Tera ra, e mea faufaa ia haamau i taua i’a ra; e mea faufaa ia tapuhia i te uaua, no te haapapuraa i tona vairaa e a muri noa atu.

Le grand poisson se dirigea vers un nouvel horizon, un nouveau ciel.

Par l’esprit de Terehe, le grand poisson, nommé TAHITI, arriva comme un grand navire avec une grande figure de proue.

Il s’était stabilisé dans sa nouvelle position. Mais il était important de l’immobiliser ; il fallait sectionner les tendons pour l’empêcher de bouger, pour qu’il demeure éternellement à la même place.

The big fish headed for a new horizon, a new sky.

By the spirit of Terehe, the big fish, named TAHITI, arrived like a great ship with a great figurehead.

He had stabilized in his new position.

But it was important to immobilize him; it was necessary to cut the tendons to prevent it from moving, so that it remains eternally in the same place.

The warriors of Opoa and their clans settled there. There was no royal family.

Men, women and children lived happily; the roosters could be heard singing, the dogs barking; the vegetation was lush and green.

Il n’y avait pas de famille royale.

Les hommes, les femmes et les enfants vivaient heureux ; on entendait les coqs chanter, les chiens aboyer ; la végétation était verdoyante et luxuriante.

A parau maira o Tafa’i : «E mea faufaa ia tapuhia i te uaua o teie i’a ! E mea faufaa ia faataahia te mau uaua, ia puhihau mai te mata’i e fa’a’ati i te upoo, e ia haapapuhia teie i’a !»

Hare maira te mau aito e tinai i te fenua: ua ta’iri o Terarai i tona rima, ua ta’iri o Taito’a, o Tautai, o Ta’inuiatea, ua a’iri ratou i te fenua i te to’i, aita ra te mau uaua i mutu.

Aita te mau aito i manuia i teie ohipa.

C’est alors que Tafa’i, le guerrier déclara : «Les tendons de ce poisson doivent être sectionnés !

Ils doivent être séparés de façon à ce que le vent puisse souffler librement autour de la tête et que le poisson reste stable ! » Les guerriers vinrent pour frapper le territoire : Terarai se servit de ses mains, Taito’a frappa, Tautai, Ta’inui’atea, Taitaata vinrent frapper le sol de leur hache mais en vain.

Aucun des guerriers ne réussit à changer quoi que ce soit.

It was then that Tafa'i, the warrior announced: "The tendons of this fish must be cut! They must be separated so that the wind can blow freely around the head and the fish remains stable! Aore ra te mau Atua i pahono.

Parau maira te aito o Maru’atoa : «E Tafai ! A taho’e i to oe puai ! A faaineine i ta oe vaa e a horo’a i te i’oa ra o Tepatea ! »

Alors, Tafa’i s’écria : «Attendez ! Il nous faut des Dieux ! Ō Dieux que je connais ! Dieux des cieux, Demi-Dieux ! Venez et frappez ce territoire !

Mais aucun Dieu ne répondit.

Le guerrier Maruato’a dit : «Tafa’i, Rassemble tes forces ! Prépare ta pirogue et nomme-la Tepatea !»

So, Tafa'i shouted: "Wait! We need Gods! O Gods that I know!

Heaven Gods, Half Gods! Come and hit this land!

But no God answered.

The Maruato'a warrior says: "Tafa'i, gather your strength! Prepare your boat and name it Tepatea!"

Haere atura o Tafa’i e tona hoa o Ohuna na ni’a i to raua vaa, reva ihora i apato’a, i te upoo o te fee, i Tumura’ifenua, i Tupu’ai.

Te iteraa o te arii nui o Tupuai, o Marerenuimaruato’a, ia raua, parau atura: «Manava ia orua, Vaitafa’i e Ohuna !

E opuaraa rahi teie i fano mai ai orua i apato’a, i Tupuai !»

Tafa’i et son ami Ohuna embarquèrent sur leur pirogue, prirent la direction du Sud, vers la tête de la pieuvre Tumura’ifenua, vers Tupu’ai.

Lorsque le roi de Tupu’ai, Marerenuimaruato’a les aperçut, il s’écria : «Soyez les bienvenus, Vaitafa’i et Ohuna ! Une mission importante vous a conduit ici, dans le Sud, jusqu’à Tupu’ai !»

Tafa'i and his friend Ohuna embarked on their canoe, heading south towards the head of the octopus Tumura'ifenua, towards Tupu'ai.

«O vai te mau Atua e tauturu no teie ohipa ?»

«Aore e Atua i faaroo mai! Te vai noa mai ra Tahiti manahune ma te Atua ore ! No reira maua i haere mai e farerei ia oe, e te Arii Marerenuimaruato’a ! no te rave I teie ohipa!» Feruri ihora te arii e ua pahono maira: «E ore au e tae ! Teie te to’i TEPAHURUNUIMATEVAITAU !

Vaitafai, e parau oe , e no te oro’a o Tinorua, te fatu o te moana, no te tapu te uaua o te i’a o Tahiti !»

«Oui, c’est une mission très importante ! Ō Roi Marerenuimaruato’a ! Les tendons du grand poisson TAHITI doivent être coupés, sa gorge tranchée de façon à ce qu’il ne bouge plus !»

«Qui sont les artisans désignés pour ce travail ?»

«Il n’y en a pas. Les guerriers ont essayé mais n’ont pu rien faire.»

«Quels Dieux avez-vous pour aider vos efforts ?»

«Aucun Dieu n’a entendu !

TAHITI est sans Dieux. C’est pourquoi nous sommes venus te chercher, Ō Roi Marerenuimaruato’a ! pour accomplir ce travail !»

Le roi réfléchit un instant et répondit : «Je n’irai pas ! Voici la hache TEPAHURUNUIMATEVAITAU! Et toi, Vaitafa’i, tu déclareras que c’est pour la cérémonie de Tinorua, le Seigneur de l’Océan, pour sectionner les tendons du poisson TAHITI !»

Haere maira te to’a o Vaitafa’i e te to’i i roto i tona na rima, a parau atura : «Teie te to’i mana TEPAHURUNUIMATEVAITAU no te oro’a a Tinorua, te Atua o te moana, no te tapuraa i te uaua o teie i’a rahi o Tahiti !

Ia tupu fenua ! ia ō mai te pō! ia ō mai te mata’i e te ata !»

Vaitafa’i et Ohuna prirent la hache qui était très grande et très lourde, et levèrent la voile en direction du Nord.

Arrivés à Tahiti, ils se rendirent à l’Assemblée où tous les guerriers et les clans étaient réunis. Le guerrier Vaitafa’i s’avança et, tenant la hache de ses deux mains, il s’écria :«Voici la grande hache magique TEPAHURUNUIMATEVAITAU pour la cérémonie de Tinorua, Seigneur de l’Océan, qui servira à sectionner les tendons de ce grand poisson TAHITI ! Que la croissance du territoire puisse se faire ! Que l’obscurité qui s’abaisse puisse traverser !

Que le vent et les nuages puissent passer !»

Vaitafa'i and Ohuna took the ax, which was very large and heavy, and set sail towards the north. Arrived in Tahiti, they went to the Assembly where all the warriors and clans were gathered.

Haere maira te mau to’a e ua faaea i te tāpu i te mau uaua i te taaroaraa te arapo’a o te i’a.

Tout à coup, la hache devint possédée et légère dans les mains de Vaitafa’i qui se mit à couper la terre. Celle-ci s’ouvrit sous le choc.

Alors, tous les guerriers s’y mirent et ne cessèrent que lorsque tous les tendons de la gorge furent tranchés.

Suddenly, the ax became possessed and light in the hands of Vaitafa'i who began to cut the ground. The land opened itself with ease.

Then all the warriors went in and did not stop until all the tendons of the throat were cut.

La tête du poisson se rejeta en arrière, la grande plaine entre les deux montagnes fut coupée en deux. Il ne resta qu’un isthme appelé maintenant TARAVAO, qui signifie «l’épine du coin».

Les deux parties du territoire furent appelées TEVAITAI et TEVAIUTA ; les rivières VAIARI et VAIURIRI ; la tribu des six ATIMAONO ; le fort PAPARA. La tête du poisson fut nommée TAI’ARAPU.

The head of the fish was thrown back, the great plain between the two mountains was cut in half. There remained only one isthmus called now TARAVAO, which means "the thorn of the corner".
