The Library

The Army & Navy Club, affectionately known as ‘The R ag’, is a Club originally founded for former and serving officers of the British and Commonwealth Armed Services, and their immediate relatives. One of London’s hidden gems, The R ag exudes char acter and charm, offering an unforgettable experience for your special occasion.

The Club has been situated in St James’s since 1837 and on the present site since 1851. The picture above represents the Club in 1890, 70+ years before its reconstruction. With the building becoming evermore uneconomical, it consequently went through a total re-build in 1962. As a result, the Club combines the ambience of tradition and modern facilities without pretentiousness. The Clubhouse offers members, guests and event organisers the ultimate homely feel, with a friendly yet highly professional staff who ensure that every event runs with efficiency and style.

The Club’s distinguished forebears

Lieutenant General Sir Edward Barnes, the first President who, as Adjutant General, fought, sword in hand, at the Battle of Waterloo, and Admiral Sir Philip Durham, one of Nelson’s “Band of Brothers” who commanded HMS Defiance at the Battle of Trafalgar.
