It’s June, y’all, and that means summer...

Hello from our Mayors…

PHOTOGRAPHY CONTRIBUTORS Derek Gower, Dustin Doskocil, Lauren Medean, Diana Raines PRODUCTION

...in Texas is in full swing. What does summer mean to you? Digging your toes in the sand with absolutely nothing on your mind? Holding hands as you listen to the backyard cricket chorus? Thumping till you find that one perfect watermelon? Floating in the pool while the sun kisses your skin? Painting your toenails a color you wouldn’t dare during the winter? Or driving home from a night out with all the windows rolled down? Sign me up for all of the above. Around here June also means our annual Women in Business section, time for us to introduce you to some of the movers and shakers that make our town a wonderful place to live, work, play, and worship. We know you’ll be as impressed with these gals as we are. Our Creator certainly knew what he was doing when he created fall and winter, when the earth can rest, and spring and summer when it wakes up and celebrates living again. May your summer months be full of life and love, friends and family. And, as always, thanks for being loyal readers of Living Magazine. “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

MAYOR NOTES

MAYOR RON JENSEN

MAYOR DAVID COOK

Grand Prairie is growing up! We feel like a small town, but we are the 15th largest city in Texas and 127th largest in the nation. We have some big things happening that will be positive for all of us in this area:

Summer in Mansfield is one of our community’s busiest times. The library is gearing up for Summer Reading Club. Parks & Recreation has numerous programs and activities, from kayaking on Joe Pool Lake to scavenger hunts at Oliver Nature Park. There is a full calendar of special events, including our big Rockin 4th of July fireworks event July 3. Behind all these great community activities are talented city staff members planning the fun and supported by a multitude of volunteers who give back to the community in many ways. Whether cleaning up the creek or working to help “Feed the Kids For the Summer,” these volunteers express their love of their community and their neighbors by lending a hand. Just last month, we celebrated Earth Day with a fabulous event hosted by the Keep Mansfield Beautiful Commission. These volunteers take an active role in ensuring that Mansfield is beautiful, clean and litter free. Their efforts are just one of the ways individuals and groups are making a difference in Mansfield. So as you and your family are out in the community this summer, enjoying the parks or attending a special event, don’t forget to say thanks to the many volunteers who are working hard behind the scenes with our staff to make these activities and events successful. It’s this kind of partnership that makes Mansfield one of the “Best Places to Live in America.” Happy Father’s Day and Enjoy Your Summer,

GRAND PRAIRIE

As May kicks off summer planning, be sure to include these daycations on your agenda: • IKEA Grand Prairie opens in November 2017 • EPIC WATERS indoor water park opens in late 2017 • EPIC Mega Recreation Center opens early 2018 • PlayGrand Adventures all accessible play ground for people of all ages and abilities opens in Central Park in mid 2018, with future phases planned • SH 360 extension to FM 287 opens in early 2018 • The Bardin Bridge over SH 360 has reopened (after a truck fire damaged the bridge), for all of you who may need a back door to Lake Joe Pool or the Premium Outlet Mall on an I-20 busy traffic day Visit our website for the latest news and info: www.gptx.org. TALK OF THE TOWN

CHRISTIAN LEADERS

Lay Witnesses for Christ’s RIGHT TRACK Drug, Alcohol & Violence Prevention Program was proud to sponsor The 28th Annual Christian Athlete of the Year Awards Banquet for 2016. This event recognizes deserving student athletes throughout the state of Texas who have made a difference in their schools, in the classroom and on the athletic field by their Christian leadership. These exceptional student athletes are choosing to make a difference in their world through sports. Identifying those impacting their current peers positively as perceived by those around them, thousands of deserving Christian athletes are nominated each year and a six month endeavor begins as it culminates with an awesome night where the top male and female semi-finalists are highlighted and the winners announced. The male recipient of Christian Athlete of the Year was awarded to John Stephen Jones. John Stephen is the Quarterback for Highland Park High School in Dallas. John Stephen, a junior, led his team to a Texas state football championship and received the honor of being named “offensive MVP” in front of more than 35,000 fans at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in December. His coaches have said that he is an impressive young man with that inate ability to infectiously inspire those around him to championship heights. “I am honored to be chosen as Christian Athlete of the Year 2016 and humbled by the recognition. Now I understand more everyday whatever is to come is part of God’s plan for my life. Through His grace today, I aspire to be one who chooses

16 MAN 6-17.indd 16-17

to walk by faith, not by sight. I certainly have not arrived as a spiritual giant but I truly aspire to fulfill my God given potential as a “follower of Jesus Christ”. I realize that He is in control because I am seeking Him to show me the way and to grow me daily more into His image by studying the Word and applying what I learn wherever I am- be it on the field or in the class room. God has shown me that true happiness does not come from friends or money, it comes from having an everlasting relationship with Jesus Christ!” — John Stephen Jones The female recipient of Christian Athlete of the Year was awarded to Bryn Gerlich. Bryn is a junior at Colleyville Heritage High School. She is a member of the basketball, volleyball, cross country and track teams and has excelled at each sport she participates in. She has received numerous awards and has been seen as an exceptional role model by her peers and has established herself as a leader in the classroom, in extracurricular activities and in her community. “To be the Christian Athlete of the Year I feel like you have to be someone who displays the values of what the Christian faith believes in through their everyday lives, especially when nobody is watching. I believe we are all here because of the same love and faith we share for Jesus Christ. To me that is what should be celebrated, the fact that we have so many young and thriving athletes pursuing and living for Christ. I am so honored and humbled to be able to say I have been apart of this amazing event for the past two years among some outstanding Christian Athletes across the state. Every L I V I NGMAG A Z IN E . N E T

person nominated deserves this award just as much if not more than I do because I know I am not perfect. I do hope you are able to see the love and passion I have for my faith though, because that is what got me here in the first place, and if you can then I am doing something right and that’s all I can ask for. Thank you so much for this humbling and amazing opportunity.” — Bryn Gerlich —“I am so honored to be a part of the Christian Athlete of the Year Awards each year. I feel very strongly about this ministry and its staff who have been there for me prior to ever winning any Gold Medals or every setting any World Records. Only eternity will reveal the real impact we can have, but we each must choose to be involved, to reach out and point the way to Christ, always remembering that to whom much is given, much is required. I believe the youth of our world are worthy of our every investment and our best efforts on their behalf as they seek to impact the world for Christ.” — Carl Lewis, Olympian of the Century “Through the years, we have seen the tremendous platform God has entrusted to athletes. It has been our purpose to reach these individuals for Christ and JU N E 2 01 7

endeavor to equip them, so they in turn can reach others solely for His Glory. We have been so blessed and encouraged to have seen many whom God has allowed great visibility to literally share their faith in Christ throughout the world. Each of these exceptional student athletes have been selected because of their accomplishments in the classroom, on the athletic field and because of their Christian influence and we are thrilled to honor them at the 28th ANNUAL CHRISTIAN ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARDS BANQUET.” — Dr. Sam Mings, Founder of Lay Witnesses for Christ International.

Redefining how TEXAS does School

GRACE PREPARATORY ACADEMY STRONGER FAITH—STRONGER FAMILIES—STRONGER STUDENTS BY MEREDITH KNIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEREK GOWER

Throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s there was a tug-of-war of sorts between the American educational system and parents who felt they could better educate their children and reinforce their family values at home. The debate grew contentious in the 1980s and 90s. But by the 2000s, parent-centric education had taken its rightful place as a viable and successful alternative to a traditional classroom education. Then in 1992, Grace Preparatory Academy, the first University-ModelTM school in the country, began to redefine how communities thought about education. A University-ModelTM school (UMS) is a Christian, collegepreparatory school which blends aspects of private and home schooling. The model allows students to meet on campus two or three days per week, and complete lessons at home on alternate days, under the direction of professional teachers, with parents serving as the first teacher, shepherd, and government in the life of the student. Today there are more than 70 University-Model schools across the country with Grace Prep serving as the flagship school. It all started with a group of parents who desired to be active in carrying out the unique responsibility a parent has in the total education of their children. Grace Prep was the first school to marry two proven elements of educational success, 1) professional classroom instruction of a teacher and 2) caring at-home mentoring of a parent, that combined into a single, unified, college-simulated program. Their theory was this: place any child in a warm, secure, inviting environment with professionals who care, parents who are engaged, and a viable plan for success, and they will thrive. And thrive they do. “After five years of serving here at GPA, what has amazed me the most is how the extra time that’s returned to the parents pays such huge dividends,” said Head of School, Dr. Marc Evans. “Bonds are strengthened, relationships deepen, and the outcomes are lifelong, versus temporary.” “At Grace Prep, we strive to close the gap,” said Chris Harper, Director of School Advancement.

together. We partner with parents in educating their children so that the institution takes a backseat to the home. We’re literally redefining how Texas does ‘school’. For instance, it takes public and charter schools in Texas nearly 12,000 hours to educate a single child. At Grace Prep, we do it in half the time but with twice the results. And we do it with excellence resulting in 21 National Merit scholars since 1992, 19 state championships, and a Biblical worldview. That’s the Grace Prep way—half the time, twice the result.”

Dr. Evans said. “With 30,000 square feet under the roof, our new building includes a new café/student union, new state-of-the-art math and science labs, a new art studio with a pottery kiln, a collegiate gymnasium with two full high school courts, and a new strength and conditioning room for our student athletes and trainers. There are also collegiate-level locker rooms and a new admissions office with administrative offices.

On average, it takes a five-day-a-week school 1,100 hours every year to educate a single child. Grace Prep does it in 550 hours, which means by the time the child graduates high school Grace Prep has given parents back more than three years of their child’s life. And parents love it. So much so that the school is growing exponentially.

“WE NEVER WANT OUR FAMILIES TO HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN ATTENDING OR NOT ATTENDING FUNCTIONS, BASED UPON COSTS. OUR NEWEST TUITION STRUCTURE INCLUDES ALL TECHNOLOGY, EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, CLASS TRIPS, ETC. ONCE YOU’RE IN, THERE ARE NO ADDITIONAL COSTS FOR THE EXPERIENCE. EVERY STUDENT HAS THE OPTION TO FULLY ENGAGE IN ALL THAT WE OFFER.”

As the school experiences that growth, it has transitioned to an all-inclusive tuition schedule. “As many private schools continue to nickel and dime their parents to death, we’ve transitioned into a no-fee school,” Dr. Evans said.“We never want our families to have to choose between attending or not attending functions, based upon costs. Our newest tuition structure includes all technology, extra-curricular activities, class trips, etc. Once you’re in, there are no additional costs for the experience. Every student has the option to fully engage in all that we offer.” More families have inquired into Grace Prep’s success and model in the last two years than in the previous five years combined. This growth has prompted Grace Prep to enlarge its footprint. “We’re excited about our brandnew student activity center which allows us to expand our programs and to do so without leaving our campus,” JU N E 2 01 7

“We’re proud of the quality and usefulness of our new center. It’s certainly one of the best within the state in comparison to other private Christian schools,” Dr. Evans said. “Students in our primary grades can put their artistic skills, scientific skills, and physical education skills to good use there. Not to mention it will be family-centric with an area where their parents can sit and share a cup of coffee together.” As more and more families seek to have an invested role in the educational life of their children, the future looks bright for Grace Prep and University-ModelTM schools as a whole. And it appears that Dr. Evans has his finger on the pulse: “Positive growth in a UMS school is most dependent on strong parental involvement in conjunction with loving personnel and teachers who are bright, engaged, and above all, committed to the Lord in all they say and do. Individually we contribute, but together we transform.” Transforming students, families, and communities, Grace Prep has a lot of people rethinking how education should be done in America. FRUIT OF THE VINE

UNOFFENDABLE

BY LISA JENKINS-MOORE

GOD HIMSELF PROCLAIMED THAT THOSE GATHERED TO BUILD THE TOWER OF BABEL COULD NOT BE STOPPED BECAUSE OF THEIR FOCUSED UNITY (GENESIS 11:6). UNITY IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE AND THE ENEMY WILL STOP AT NOTHING TO KEEP US DIVIDED USING HIS MOST EFFECTIVE METHOD—OFFENSE.

I

n the first verse of Luke, chapter 17, we find Jesus instructing His disciples as He so often did. He told them, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come!” Jesus did not say offenses were likely, but inevitable. As I both witness and partake in the glorious outpouring of the Spirit throughout our nation and the world, there is no doubt God is on the move. While many are filled with uncertainty, we walk by faith, knowing we are already victorious.

The enemy of our souls also knows we are triumphant in Christ, so he does everything within his power to deceive, dishearten, and divide. Psalm 133 tells us unity commands the blessing. God Himself proclaimed that those gathered to build the tower of Babel could not be stopped because of their focused unity (Genesis 11:6). Unity is of great importance and the enemy will stop at nothing to keep us divided using his most effective method—offense. Every day, dozens of opportunities to take offense arise—from the inconsiderate driver who cuts us off in traffic to the dear family member whose words cut to the bone. Offenses will come, and usually they come through one of four sources: 1. Family and Friends. No one can hurt us quite like the ones we love. 2. Authority Figures. Our bosses, pastors, teachers, counselors, leaders—even government officials—will all likely offend, whether intentionally or unintentionally. 3. People We Don’t Know. This may sound ludicrous, but how many times have you become riled up by some opinion piece in the Washington Post? Or worse yet, a friend tells you a story about a wrong done to her and you become angry at the person who committed the wrong! 4. God. Yes, we have, are, or will become offended with God. He is infinite and we are finite; we will never fully understand Him. Consequently, His goodness may be disguised in something painful. Or perhaps He blesses your neighbor with the new pool you wanted, or uses a person to build His Kingdom you find less worthy… Yes, offenses will come. It’s not if, but when. Some days, the hits keep coming, so we must choose to forgive. Peter was wrestling with offense when he asked Jesus how many times he was required to forgive. Jesus replied “seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:22). If offense takes root, it becomes bitterness that hardens our heart and taints every aspect of our lives. So then, how can we be on guard against offense and avoid what John Bevere calls, “the bait of satan”? 1. Be Aware. Take a deep breath and realize the devil is behind the slight, the accusation, the misunderstanding—anything and everything that brings division. Stand your ground, do not be shaken. Forgive immediately, and forgive EVERY time your mind begins to replay the transgression. As Bevere writes in his book, The Bait of Satan, “If you’re in the place where God wants you, the devil will try to offend you to get you out. He wants to uproot [you] from the place God plants [you]. If he can get you out, he has been successful. If you will not budge, even in the midst of great conflict, you will spoil his plans.”

people often hurt others, so if the blow was intentionally given, trust God to make things right. The Bible tells us, “A fool’s wrath is quickly and openly known, but a prudent man ignores an insult” Proverbs 12:16 (AMPC). 3. Be Armed with the Word. Psalm 119:165 states, “Great peace have those who love Your law, And nothing causes them to stumble.” 4. Trust God. If we study God’s Word, we will see His goodness. While we may not always understand His ways, knowing His faultless character, helps us trust Him through difficult times. We see this in Matthew 11. John the Baptist, Christ’s cousin is imprisoned, facing execution. John sends word to Jesus, questioning if He is indeed the Messiah. Jesus replies, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me” (v4-6). Could it be Jesus was letting John know He was indeed the Messiah, but he (John) would not be rescued? John could have taken offense because of Jesus’ ministry, or because Jesus did not come to his aid. Either way, Jesus knew John could not fully understand the circumstances, and without trust in God’s eternal justice and mercy, could have harbored offense. Jesus explained that in the last days, “many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another.” With social media and a connected world, we have more opportunity than ever before to take offense. As Believers, let’s not allow the enemy to kill, steal, and destroy our fellowship with one another. God wants us to be awake and fully aware of the enemy’s schemes so we can foil his plans before they are executed. Ask God to fill you with His love, and then follow I Peter 4:8, “Above all things have intense and unfailing love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins [forgives and disregards the offenses of others]” (AMPC). Day by day, hour by hour, commit to be unoffendable. All Scripture quotations are NKJV unless otherwise noted.

2. Be Merciful. The Word tells us if we want to be shown mercy, we must be merciful. I’ve heard it said we judge ourselves on our intentions, but others on their actions. What if we just gave others the benefit of the doubt? Hurting

ike a lot of us, Kimberly Berman was dealing with guilt and disappointment, wondering how she’d allowed her weight to get to the point that it had. Surely, she could fix this problem herself. But she’d tried, time and time again, only to lose weight and watch it come right back on, each time with a few added pounds. What she wanted was a permanent fix. “Eating programs and diets only worked while I was on them,” she said “I was too easily distracted from the program with life events that happen regularly. Then it was like starting all over again to get back on track.” Then in May 2015, she’d had enough. “I got real with myself and realized if I haven’t lost the weight on my own by now, what made me think I ever could,” Kimberly said. She needed help. She needed a partner in her weight-loss journey.

WEIGHT-LOSS PARTNERS That’s when she made an appointment with Methodist Mansfield Minimally Invasive Surgical Associates. “I

26 MAN 6-17.indd 26-27

went to an information meeting and met Dr. Trussell and Dr. Standerwick,” Kimberly said. “I wanted a doctor who cared about me as a patient and cared about my success. I didn’t just want to be ‘Weight Loss Patient #5000’. Right away, I liked the way they communicated and answered all my questions. These were skilled surgeons, not just weight loss doctors. I realized early in the process that everyone I dealt with at Methodist Mansfield Minimally Invasive Surgical Associates really care about me as a person, woman, and mom. They wanted me to succeed as much as I did. They let me know they were with me and pulling for me every step of the way.” One hurdle Kimberly dreaded was dealing with her insurance company. “My insurance has many requirements so I was expecting it to take about 6 months,” she said. “But Dr. Trussell and Dr. Standerwick’s office helped me wade through all the information they requested. Even a week before my scheduled surgery, they were coming up with L I V I NGMAG A Z IN E . N E T

additional information they suddenly needed. I panicked. But the Methodist Mansfield Minimally Invasive Surgical Associates staff has done this so much that they were able to walk through it with me.”

MINIMALLY-INVASIVE SOLUTIONS The surgeons of Methodist Mansfield Minimally Invasive Surgical Associates offer procedures for a wide range of conditions; including surgery for benign and malignant disease of the colon, and gallbladder, and the repair of various inguinal, ventral, and hiatal hernias, always emphasizing a minimally-invasive approach. Minimally-invasive surgery is performed through a significantly smaller incision, which means less trauma to the body, less blood loss, dramatically reduced scarring (with most incisions only requiring a stitch or two to close, less risk of infection, and much quicker recovery times.

laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Bariatric surgery, also referred to as weight-loss surgery, is a long-term solution for people suffering the burden of obesity and its related diseases. Contrary to what most assume, the goal of bariatric surgery is not to lose weight—this is a wonderful secondary effect. The primary purpose of weight-loss surgery is to improve or eliminate the diseases associated with obesity, which can include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, and sleep apnea.

offers all the support you need before, during, and after surgery. But they can only do so much. No one but you can make the commitment to change your life, stick to it, and achieve success.”

PERMANENT WEIGHT LOSS

Kimberly reports she’s feeling healthier and facing life with newfound confidence, energy, self-worth, and self-fulfillment. “This surgery is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself,” she said. “The compliments, the pride, the things I can do with my kids that I couldn’t before, and the time it has extended my life—it’s truly LIFE CHANGING! If you’re mentally prepared to make the right decisions and follow your doctor’s advice, you will see results from this surgery. The Methodist Mansfield Minimally Invasive Surgical Associates

ntreated hearing loss can affect your ability to understand speech and negatively impact social and emotional well-being. This could be what’s happening if you find yourself or someone you love withdrawing from social situations, spending less time with family and friends and shying away from things they used to love, like going to dinner or a movie. Drs. Lisa B. Fell and Kristin Robbins, of Audiology Experts, are Doctors of Audiology that evaluate hearing and take time to understand the degree of hearing loss and an individual’s lifestyle so they can recommend solutions for improving quality of life. Hearing loss can occur gradually. “A change in a person’s ability to communicate affects the whole family, and often it’s a family member who first notices a change in their loved one,” said Dr. Robbins. Hearing loss can be frustrating, alienating, and fatiguing. Untreated hearing loss has also been linked to doing poorly on memory tests because of the strain involved in trying to hear. Essentially, someone might strain to hear an instruction or conversation and then not remember what they heard. Dr. Fell states, “some research shows a link between hearing loss and dementia.” One Johns Hopkins study found that seniors with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. It’s important that the patient get evaluated. Hearing loss can happen to anyone - like that healthy child, the vibrant retiree experiencing natural, age related hearing changes, even the younger adult still in the workforce. Drs. Fell and Robbins employ the latest knowledge and technology to evaluate the

“HEALTHY, HAPPY PETS AND PET PARENTS SERVICED BEYOND THEIR EXPECTATIONS IS OUR GOAL EVERY DAY” began to form of a new type of veterinary practice where care could proceed uninterrupted 24 hours a day. She imagined a full-service, critical care animal medical center where doctors are on premises at all times, dedicated to giving pets the care they need, with compassion and TLC, any time of day or night, 365 days a year. Based on that concept, Dr. Karger opened I-20 AMC in 1987 and set out in search of like-minded veterinarians, technicians, customer service representatives, and support staff. Angela Snow of The Cleaning Authority

I

t hardly seems possible to Angela Snow that it was 12 years ago she was investigating what type of business she wanted to launch. She knew she wanted to do something to make life better for local families. And she knew that any business she began should be as empowering to her employees as it was to her customer. She researched several options but one kept coming back to her. “I knew firsthand the joy of returning home at the end of the day to a clean, fresh-smelling home,” she said. “But I also knew the hassle of finding someone I could trust to consistently clean my home the way I wanted it cleaned.”

any of Donna Smiedt’s clients are surprised to discover she herself is happily married and has been, for almost 20 years. As an attorney specializing in divorce proceeding, they assume she doesn’t believe in the concept of marriage. Nothing could be further from the truth. “Clients seem to think it’s inconsistent for me to be so happily married,” Donna said. “To the contrary, after serving as a divorce lawyer for 29 years, I’ve learned a lot about relationships and human nature and have used that knowledge in my own personal pursuit of happiness.” And it’s that wisdom and life experience she attempts to impart on her clients. “I try to impress upon them that, even if this particular relationship didn’t work out, that doesn’t mean they can’t learn from their mistakes, be the best person they can be, and—above all—don’t be afraid to love again.” Wise words from someone who’s “seen it all” as a board-certified family law specialist. For 30 years, Donna has focused her practice on complex family law litigation, including divorce, property division, adoption, child support, paternity, and post-divorce modification. “Litigation takes an emotional and financial toll on my clients,” Donna said. “I need each client to be honest and candid with me, from day one. The more information I have, the better I can present options to them, including recommendations for making the family adjustment easier on their children.”

The concept and the system of the Cleaning Authority impressed Angela. “They had it all figured out and I could see right away how it would benefit my customers but also give my employees the chance at a better life,” she said. “I have every confidence in the product/ service we provide. Our success begins and ends with the education of our employees and their knowledge of our “Rotation System” (the particular way the service is completed each time). I do all of the in-home estimates myself and I always want to know what I’m selling the customer is exactly what we deliver. I’m happy to say that it is.” Angela feels strongly about providing a work-friendly environment for her employees. “That begins with thorough training, so they can do their job the best they can and feel proud of what they offer our customers,” Angela said. “A revolving door of employees leads to a revolving door of customers. Each of our customers is just as important as the next. When we get a customer, we want to keep them as part of our family…just like our employees.”

Get to Sleep!

A Few Good Men You can do it with your eyes closed BY LARUE GILLESPIE

HOW MUCH SLEEP DO I NEED?

Why do we need sleep? “The prevailing feeling is that it’s important for brain function,” said Michael Thorpy, MD, director of the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center, Montefiore Health System. “The current evidence is that sleep is important to refresh the central nervous system at night.” One of the more recent findings within the past two years is that the brain has a system––the glymphatic system––that allows it to clear out interstitial fluids during sleep, he explained. “If you don’t get enough sleep, [it] can accumulate and impair functional ability and memory the next day.”

Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours each day

For those of you who think routinely staying up late isn’t that big of a deal, you might want to think again. “If you’re staying up late and not sleeping in to catch up on the lost hours, it’s likely that you are collecting sleep debt that can lead to serious

is Closer Than You Think

How this clock is affected by external factors such as periods of work, rest, time of the day or night, food intake, sunlight, hormonal state, caffeine, alcohol, and emotional states is not fully known. If such is the case then heart disease in sleep apnea doesn’t come as a surprise, although we don’t yet know the exact relationship or mechanisms.” — Dr. Atif Sohail

You do it every night. You know it’s important. And if you don’t get enough of it, you will definitely be cranky and anxious the next day. Though you may not understand all the bodily processes that occur while you’re soundly asleep under that fluffy comforter, we’ll be happy to explain why it’s absolutely vital to good health. So peel those eyelids open and read on (after you’ve had your coffee, of course).

Sleep deprivation can lead to a whole slew of other issues, too. According to Hugo Mercier, CEO and co-founder of the neurotechnology company Rhythm, these can include lack of alertness, impaired memory, slurred speech, mood swings, and fatigue. “Long-term impacts of sleep deprivation, especially in the sleep stages like NREM (or deep sleep), result in irreversible conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s,” he said.

Sleep Apnea affects many different people in various walks of life and in different vocations, such as those who work the night shift.

Older adults (65+): 7-8 hours While these numbers are a basic guideline, it’s important to know that some people don’t require as much sleep. “Rather than comparing yourself with standard numbers, your most useful guideline is to be getting enough sleep to think clearly through the day, feel fairly consistent energy through the day, and not have the anxiety, depression, or impatience that often accompanies insufficient sleep,” said Richard Shane, PhD, a behavioral sleep specialist. WHAT’S KEEPING YOU UP AT NIGHT? Sleep deprivation is definitely an issue here in the United States, where culturally we are driven to competitively succeed and often brag about our lack of sleep with comments like, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” Behavioral sleep therapist Richard Shane, PhD, said three things interfere the most with people’s sleep: • Anxiety, stress, and other mental/emotional discomfort • Physical causes, such as pain and medical illness • Environmental factors like noise and poor sleep habits long-term consequences,” said Mercier. “Similar to sleep deprivation, late nights can lead to anxiety, fluctuating melatonin levels, poor eating habits, and a weakened immune system, making it far more difficult to fight off sicknesses and diseases.”

include improving your sex life, decreasing bodily pain, and helping you maintain your weight.

The benefits of consistent good sleep include a decreased risk of sickness, clearer thinking, the ability to multi-task more efficiently, and improved safety due to a lessened risk of accidents from poor sleep. And your friends and family will thank you, too, as “good sleep can improve the quality of your personal relationships,” said Richard Shane, PhD, a member of the Society for Behavioral Sleep and founder of Sleep Easily.

Conversely, too much sleep can cause problems, too. “It has been reported that sleeping more than the recommended amount could lead to an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease,” said Annmarie Belmonte from Argosy University, who is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). If you’re trying to catch up on sleep debt, she explained, “adding an hour or two in one night is likely okay, but you do not want to alter your sleep schedule too much.”

“Good sleep is vital to how you look, feel, and perform,” said Steve Orma, PsyD, CBT, a psychologist and insomnia and anxiety specialist. He said sleep’s positive effects also

To sum it up, good sleep = better, healthy, more energetic you; bad sleep = cranky, anxious, sickly, not-so-good you. Got it?

APPROACHING DISORDERS DIFFERENTLY

WHAT TO DO If you’re dealing with anxiety, see a professional for help or look for ways to reduce stress in your life, like exercising and meditation. If it’s pain or illness, check with your physician. If it’s poor sleep hygiene, then make your room a cave, turn off the TV, leave your phone on the kitchen counter, and keep it nice and cool (some suggest 68 degrees) while you slumber. At the very least, remember this tip from the American Optometric Association: turn your digital devices off at least one hour before bed as the blue light emitting from those screens boosts cortisol and keeps you awake well after you turn off the lights. Most importantly, stick to a consistent sleep/wake schedule, even on the weekends.

an a little yoga before bed really help you get to sleep? About 30 minutes before bed, turn off the screens, get clean and comfortable, and try this short yoga sequence explained by Erin Smith, author of Sensible Wellness for Women.

TRY THIS 1. Start in bed, lying on your back with one pillow under your head and one under your knees. This is called “corpse” pose in yoga. Rest your hands on your belly and notice them rise and fall as you breathe. Every time your mind starts to race, come back to the breath. Stay here about three minutes. 2. Remove the pillows and lie flat on the bed. Pull your right knee into your chest and move your hips around in a circle. Then make circles with your ankle. Place your left hand on top of your right knee and draw your leg across your body to the left. Turn your gaze to the right, then close your eyes and connect to the breath. Take about 15 deep breaths, and then switch sides. 3. Lying flat, bend your legs and place your feet on the bed. Lift your hips up and off the bed, stretching your heart toward your chin in a bridge pose. Take 10 deep breaths

and then lower your hips to the bed and hug your knees into your chest. Repeat this two more times. 4. Sit up and cross your legs. Fold over your legs, resting your hands or arms on a pillow placed in front of you. Shake your head gently to release any tension in your neck. Stay here about a minute, and then switch the leg in front to repeat. 5. If you only have time for one pose every day, make it this one: turn around and stretch your legs up the headboard (or pop out of bed and find a free wall). Lie on your back with your butt as close to the headboard as is comfortable for you. From there, extend your legs up the wall, so that your ankles or backs of your legs are resting fully against it. This gentle, inverted pose uses gravity to return the blood to your heart without effort, slowing your heart rate. Place a pillow under your head and close your eyes. Stay here until you feel calm enough to sleep. The goal of yoga before sleep isn’t to exercise or to raise the heart rate: it’s the opposite. Your goal is to assist your body in relaxing. With this goal in mind, practice self-care by making restfulness a priority that you ease into, not something to force. Namaste! Learn how Dr. Bradford can help you today! Whether strolling around town or hiking a mountain, your feet literally support you every day. By age 70, the average person will have walked enough to circle the planet four times, according to the American Podiatric Medical Association. The feet that support you need support of their own—by way of attention and care. Podiatrists can help. They are uniquely qualified with education, training, and experience to treat the complex structure of the foot and ankle. Your podiatrist will diagnose and treat injuries, evaluate your biomechanics, offer advice on proper footwear, and prescribe custom orthotics if needed. How do you know when to see a podiatrist? Here are five signs it’s time. YOU STARTED A NEW WORKOUT ROUTINE

Running, walking, Pilates, CrossFit… whatever the exercise, a podiatrist can evaluate your body and feet for potential problems and strategies to avoid them. You can ask for a recommendation on the right athletic shoe for your foot. And this may be a good time to discuss corns and calluses—thickened skin caused by rubbing or excess pressure—or ways to avoid the fungal infection known as athlete’s foot. YOU HAVE A PAINFUL BUNION

It’s not just because you’re breaking in new shoes. That aching bump at the outer base of your big toe is a bunion. It’s formed when the bone or tissue at the joint gets moved out of place. Switching to roomier footwear may ease the soreness, but this problem needs professional care. A visit to a podiatrist can ensure that you correct the underlying

46 MAN 6-17.indd 46-47

issues and treat bunion pain with the right padding, taping, medication, or surgery (in extreme cases).

YOUR TOENAILS ARE IN TROUBLE

Feeling a bit squeamish about slipping into flip-flops? A steady change in toenail quality and color could indicate toenail fungus, an infection under the surface of the nail. If you suffer from an ingrown nail, you’ll feel the sides of your toenail digging into the surrounding tissue. Ingrown toenails can be a minor irritation or a major pain if they become infected. Your podiatrist is the best person to diagnose and manage fungal infections and ingrown toenails.

YOU’RE DIAGNOSED WITH DIABETES

If you have diabetes, you know you’re at risk of related foot problems. Nearly 15 percent of people with diabetes will suffer from a diabetic foot ulcer—an open sore or wound on the bottom of your foot. Your podiatrist plays an important role in your comprehensive diabetic management plan by carefully monitoring skin, nails, nerves, and blood supply to your feet. YOUR HEELS ARE HURTING

If you feel soreness with each step, this is no time to cool your heels. As the largest of your foot’s 26 bones, the heel is subject to strain, sprains, and joint pain. Your discomfort may be signaling arthritis or tendonitis, an old injury that wasn’t properly treated, or a ligament strain known as plantar fasciitis. Only your podiatrist can diagnose you and prescribe the best treatment to get you back on your feet, pain-free. L I V I NGMAG A Z IN E . N E T

HELPING THE GUYS IN YOUR LIFE STAY HEALTHY BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT

Men’s health experts have long understood that the way to a man’s health is through the women in his life. In our time of equal rights and female empowerment, we women still make plenty of healthcare decisions for our husbands, sons, fathers, and other men we care about. Perhaps it’s because of our natural inclination toward nurturing? Whatever the reason, when our men are healthier our lives are richer. So, here’s to keeping our men in tip top shape.

WHY US?

Why do women so often take responsibility for the health concerns of our men? Here are four theories. • Years of routine pelvic exams and mammograms make us experienced healthcare consumers. • Monthly periods and frequent breast self-exams train us to be more attuned to our bodies. • Fluctuations in hormones and frequent body changes help us more readily admit to health problems or weaknesses. • We realize our partner’s sexual health affects our quality of life and that risky habits he doesn’t kick put us in danger too. ACCOMPANY HIM TO THE DOCTOR

Statistically the average woman asks four questions during a doctor’s appointment, while the average man asks none. Why not tag along to make sure he asks the right questions, points out symptoms, pushes for tests he needs, and offers insights to help with his diagnosis and treatment? Before the visit, encourage him to keep a written record of symptoms and write down the questions he wants answered. Investigate his family health history and risk of disease, and share that information with the doctor. HELP HIM DE-STRESS

Depression and anxiety are serious concerns for men. Yet society tells them to suck it up and “be a man.” Let him know it’s okay to show emotion, talk about his problems, and cry when he needs to. Make time to communicate so he can share his frustrations and make sure he’s taking time to unwind. EXERCISE TOGETHER

Your workout can be time set aside to spend together, keeping each other motivated, enjoying a little healthy competition, and holding each other accountable to staying fit. Exercise is more fun with a partner and it’s a great way to bond while doing something good for your health. EAT RIGHT, SNACK RIGHT

In addition to healthy vegetable-rich meals, keep fresh fruits and veggies on hand for snacking, as well healthy options like sweet potato or kale chips, smoothie ingredients, hummus, hard-boiled eggs, guacamole, yogurt and toppings, and dark chocolate. Be careful not to become the health police. Encourage, don’t nag. Praise small accomplishments and be honest about your own setbacks. You want to be a health partner, not an over-bearing wellness stickler.

Got a hot date planned next weekend and feel it’s time to plump up those smackers? First, know that the trend is going more au naturel, so the adage of “go big or go home” need not necessarily apply—though a little plumpness never hurts. So how do you breathe life into those kissers of yours?

FILL THEM UP A lasting way to get fuller lips is with injectables. “If you want a traditional filler, hyaluronic acids are still king,” said Charles E. Crutchfield III, MD, Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of Minnesota Medical School and Medical Director at CrutchfieldDermatology.com. “They work the best and give a natural look with long-lasting results.” Fillers have come a long way over the years, and there are more choices than ever. Two popular injectables used today are Volbella and Ultra Juvederm. “Ultra Juvederm is great because it’s soft and supple,” said Jane Scher, RN, BSN, an aesthetic nurse and certified nurse injector who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgical Nurses. Ultra Juvederm is FDA-approved for lips. She maintains that this product can potentially last about eight to 12 months (with a touch-up at six months). Dr. Crutchfield, a fan of Volbella, uses this product almost exclusively now for lips. “The filler is extraordinarily smooth and does a great job of plumping lips and also filling in the vertical lines around the lips,” he said. “In addition to being very smooth and producing very natural effects, it can also last longer than other fillers, about six to 12 months.”

Patchology FlashPatch Lip Gels smooth, plump, and soften your lips while diminishing fine lines. Simply apply the patch for five minutes and–voila!– achieve more youthfullooking, voluminous lips.

52 MAN 6-17.indd 52-53

Peter Capizzi, MD, a double-board certified cosmetic surgeon practicing in Charlotte, North Carolina, also uses Volbella. He said the reason the results last longer than other hyaluronic acid injectables is “it does not attract water and swell.” The procedure takes about 20 minutes to do both lips with very little bruising. Many of his patients get it done on their lunch break and return to their regular activities, even working out, afterward.

Dr. Crutchfield offers an incremental approach to injecting lips where he does a smaller treatment first and then has the patient return in 30 days for a second treatment to make sure the filler is completely balanced and where they want it to be. “Patients like this a lot ... people around them don’t really notice as much,” he said. “The goal is to have lips that look full and natural, not ‘poofy’ and ‘goofy.’” L I V I NGMAG A Z IN E . DREAM R E T R E AT Prioritize your bedroom and create a sleep sanctuary BY SUSAN ISHMAEL

Y

our bedroom is your most private space, and that either means it's your happy hideaway or an extension of your closet. If you're starting to realize that the master bedroom has become a hectic, messy catch-all, summer is the perfect time to reverse that trend by creating space free of the complications of the world. By taking a few mindful steps to change your bedroom, you can change your sleep habits, your connection to your partner, and your view of your priorities.

56 MAN 6-17.indd 56-57

BUILD A FOUNDATION • THE MATTRESS

Investing in a high quality, comfortable mattress and solid bedframe is a necessity, not a luxury. For best sleep, a solid frame topped with the mattress that works best for you and your partner is worth the investment. Adjustable beds from a variety of manufacturers can allow for personalized sleep options to give each of you comfortable nights. Other brands are making advancements in mattress technology worth checking out. Read some reviews and set your priorities before making this investment—it's the foundation of your bedroom and of your relationship, so make sure you choose something that you both adore. • NO ELECTRONICS

This might be difficult for some, but you should really try to minimize or eliminate all screens 30 to 60 minutes before bed. If you feel like you need something to help you quiet your mind before dozing

JU N E 2 01 7

off, try a book or magazine for a few minutes before lights-out. Soothing music may also help set the mood for sleep, but set a timer so that you're not interrupted by a song in the middle of the night. Some studies have shown that the blue light emitted by cell phones and tablets can disrupt sleep and cause difficulties in falling asleep. According to LiveScience.com, David Earnest of Texas A&M says, "In terms of light and our brains, there is a spectrum of wavelengths that impacts the human circadian system. Blue light is the most sensitive side of the spectrum." Simplified? Eliminating this light— and other electronic lights—before bedtime will help you sleep better. • LESS CLUTTER

The bottom line to eliminating clutter is that you must find a place for everything—and sometimes that place is the donation bin. Get rid of things you don't use or love. A stressful bedroom often ends up functioning as a laundry room, home office, and dumping ground for random objects if you’re not

careful. In creating your dream retreat, these distractions must find a place outside of the bedroom. By eliminating physical clutter around us, we can also eliminate the mental clutter that keeps our minds racing at night, and keeps us awake. • FIND ROOM FOR BEAUTY

Pair neutral-colored walls, bed sheets, and linens with exciting and vibrant accessories that you love. Choose original art over mass-market reprints. Student art, local works, or whimsical folk art pieces generally aren’t expensive, and add a personalized connection to the room. Remember: only invest in art that you love. If you're replacing dressers, side tables, and other clothing storage items, choose furniture that works for you, both in function and aesthetics. Do you like the mismatched pairing of family heirlooms and newer pieces? Or would you prefer a traditional bedroom set that is functional and beautiful? Choose what you love in agreement with your partner. You’ve both got to feel good about it!

DEVELOP GOOD HABITS

• Always put away laundry, not-quite-dirty-yet clothing, and shoes. If you have a tendency to allow laundry to accumulate in the bedroom, make a point to put it away before you go to sleep. If you’ve got family members hanging around, enlist their help! It can make all the difference. When you retreat to bed, make sure that when you open your eyes you won’t wake to an immediate "to-do" list of housekeeping. • Make your bed every day. Returning to a clean bedroom and a bed ready to crawl into after the world has had its way with you provides comforting respite. • Continually purge unneeded items as you buy new things. For every new thing bought for the bedroom, donate or sell an existing item—including clothing. Overcrowding in a bedroom, even if it’s out of sight, can become overwhelming. • Attempt to go to bed at the same time as your husband. Not only does this help you mentally signal the end of the day, it gives you a few moments of alone time to recap the day and share a quiet space. • If you have young children, it's important to give them the time and attention before sleep that they need. Begin your bedtime routine 30 minutes earlier than normal so that you can read to them, help them settle, and make the routine as purposeful as your own. Be gentle with yourself and with them at the end of the day, and don't beat yourself up if every night doesn't go smoothly.

58 MAN 6-17.indd 58-59

UTILIZE GOOD DESIGN

• Choose gentle, dimmable lighting, easily reachable bedside lamps, and a place for candles to ease the transition from evening to sleep. • Position furniture so that bedtime bathroom visits are unobstructed. • Don't be afraid of color! Pick an accent color that you love for accessories that you can easily swap out or replace when you want a change, like throw pillows, lampshades, and blankets. • Invest in one important piece. Whether it's an original work of art, a dreamy and unique bedframe, or a chaise lounge you can't do without, investing in one piece that you love will anchor the room and positively influence the way you feel about the whole space. • Consider hiring a designer to implement your vision. Let's face it: we all don't have the flair, training, or expertise to shape our own visions into reality. A home decorator or trained interior designer can do that for you. When it comes to your bedroom, your sleep habits, and your relationship, remind yourself that you are worth it!

Choose the right bedroom designer • Agree with your partner on a budget. If your goal is a stress-free refuge from the world, the last thing you need is to create tension because of cost. • Make a Pinterest board of ideas to share with your decorator. If they can see your vision first, they can best make it a reality. • Find a professional with a personality that clicks with yours. Avoid misunderstandings by choosing someone who listens, can articulate your vision back to you, and understands your concerns. • Get referrals. If you've seen the successful results of someone else's makeover, you'll have peace of mind that you'll get what you pay for by hiring the right person. • Look at examples of their past work! Though a good designer will adapt their style for each client, it’s best if they have something to show that resonates with your own tastes.

Glow Solar

Illuminating sun-fueled lighting ideas BY ANNETTE BROOKS

NOT YOUR ORDINARY HOME THEATER SYSTEM

SOLAR FOUNTAINS

Would you love to feature a bubbling fountain on your patio, or as an eco-friendly garden center piece? Solar fountains are now available in almost every design you can think of. The water pumps typically run during daylight and evening hours, and most models include solar powered lights that draw attention to your fountain after dark. If you want to place a fountain in a shady area but have a sunny spot nearby, look for a fountain that has a long cable running from the pump unit to the solar panel. SOLAR POST LIGHTS

Add elegant lighting to your fence posts by capping them with solar lights. Solar post lights are typically sold individually and come in different sizes, such as 4”x4”, 5”x5”, and 6”x6”.

olar lights and fountains have come a long way over the last few years. You’ll find them everywhere these days—brightening the edge of a walkway, creating an enchanting glow along a garden path, or lighting up a back entrance. From fun to functional, we’ve pulled together a few examples of the many ways energy efficient, cost effective solar power lighting can be used to enhance your yard and outdoor living areas with the power of the sun, long after it’s set.

DECORATIVE ACCENTS

CAFÉ LIGHTS

SOLAR PAVERS

Nothing says “party” like string lights! A festive strand or two can bring a little magic to an outdoor seating area without access to an electrical outlet. They come in all sorts of shapes, styles, and lengths, and you can choose from filament, soft white, or colored LEDs.

Bright and efficient, clear solar paver lights are inserted into a walkway, patio, or driveway. Made to be driven or walked on safely, once installed, each light—which has a built-in solar unit—charges during the day and powers on at dusk with a bright glow. Look for weather resistant products for year-round use.

FLOATING SOLAR FOUNTAINS

Do you have a small pond or a pool? Place a solar-powered fountain in the middle of it and watch the water display. Many come with more than one spray head so you can choose which spray design you like best or switch from time to time. Look for models that store solar power as well as battery power, so your fountain can run into the evening or on cloudy days, too. And of course, most come with LED lights to show off the spray at night.

what we remembered of the previous day as we carpooled to the service. We would sing to the music and nod to the message. Since neither of us had boyfriends, we might visit the single’s class following worship. After church we would typically land on a patio somewhere, nursing our headaches with more headache-inducing beverages.

PSALM 34:8 – TASTE AND SEE THAT THE LORD IS GOOD. OH, THE JOYS OF THOSE WHO TAKE REFUGE IN HIM!

That was my spiritual nourishment for the week. Aside from chatting with God briefly during the day or praying as I drifted off to sleep, that was all the soul-sustenance I got.

I owe my newfound interest in “Clean Eating” to my friend Casey Eden Sollock. Until I met Casey, I thought I was doing pretty well in the nutrition department. I favored low-fat snacks like pretzels, rice cakes, and crackers, enjoying every bite of the thiamine mononitrate, calcium chloride, and disodium EDTA blend. I drank my diet soda by the liter, naively savoring each ounce of caramel color expertly combined with the perfect blend of aspertain and phosperic acid. I doled out all kinds of processed, packaged goodies to my children, smugly congratulating myself on their low-fat diet.

No wonder I felt so empty.

And then I met Casey. Oy. Casey suggested, rather insisted, I watch the documentary Food, Inc. Highly disturbing, yes. Menu altering, not really (we already bought organic meat). Next on her list was Forks over Knives. To my husband’s dismay, this was decisively more effective. I spent four days experimenting with new recipes like Raw Vegan Baja Veggie Wraps, and Silken Tofu with Sundried Tomatoes. Looking for new and exciting ways to serve bean curd grew tiresome so I gave up. Remembering that God gave us meat to eat, I relaxed a bit and instead concentrated on slowly removing the processed foods from our pantry. Casey, sensing I had not quite crossed over to her side, sent me the link for Hungry for a Change. I watched it, not necessarily willingly, from start to finish. Stick a fork in me, friends. I’m done. According to Dr. Alejandro Junger, “We are not eating food anymore, we are eating food-like products, and they are adorned, they are made to look better and smell better so that people are attracted to them.” We are eating things that don’t exist in nature, things concocted by chemists, not chefs. In a nutshell, we’re eating more food than ever before, yet finding ourselves increasingly malnourished. We consume highly

66 MAN 6-17.indd 66-67

sweetened products that are calorie-rich, but nutrionally void. Statistically, over 30% of American adults are obese. Obese, but starving on a cellular level. Of course, this isn’t really a story about food. It just makes a good spiritual parallel.

LIKE NEWBORN BABIES, YOU MUST CRAVE PURE SPIRITUAL MILK SO THAT YOU WILL GROW INTO A FULL EXPERIENCE OF SALVATION. CRY OUT FOR THIS NOURISHMENT, NOW THAT YOU HAVE HAD A TASTE OF THE LORD’S KINDNESS. —1 PETER 2:2-3 Are you drinking pure, spiritual milk, or living on small portions of Christian McNuggets? In my post-college, pre-marriage era, I had no reason to be depressed. I had a fun job and good friends (actually, friendlike-products, but that’s another story for another time). One of those friends had a boat, and we spent many Saturdays on the lake enjoying a full cooler and good company. Although summer Saturdays would bleed into Sunday, I rarely missed church. A friend and I would meet bleary-eyed and disheveled at Starbucks. There we would caffeinate and recap L I V I NGMAG A Z IN E . N E T

I used to watch other Christians interact with each other and marvel at the sincerity of their peace. Even when they had problems, they seemed joyful. I knew how to play the game, but these people meant it. Somehow, they had tapped into something I had not discovered, and I wanted what they had. I started taking Bible studies. The daily homework and weekly accountability made a big difference, at least during the study. Once it stopped, so did the warm sense of the Holy Spirit. I tried listening to Christian music. I subscribed to a Christian devotional. I read Max Lucado and Beth Moore, always with the same results: short bursts of inspiration followed by emptiness and depression. What was I doing wrong? I wasn’t drinking the Living Water, nor was I consuming hearthealthy spiritual meals. I was surviving on Christian McNuggets.

YOU SATISFY ME MORE THAN THE RICHEST FEAST. I WILL PRAISE YOU WITH SONGS OF JOY. —PSALM 63:5 Church is essential – we are called as members of the Body of Christ to meet together weekly for worship and instruction. Bible studies, for me, are just as important. This is where I dig deeply into the Word of God and enjoy small group fellowship. We can grab daily devotions to-go, and get bite-sized portions of Scripture. Christian books offer comfort through real-life testimonies. They provide guidance and wisdom, and can open our hearts and eyes to see things differently. All good things, but vitamins none-the-less; meant to be used as supplements, not JU N E 2 01 7

daily bread. The real meat, the life-giving, soul-saving sustenance comes from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Nothing else will do, and nothing can take its place. You don’t need more religion or religious activities. Christianity isn’t about religion. It’s about relationship. It’s about you. And Jesus. No fancy packaging and no processing. No flavor enhancing nonsense and no misleading marketing. He is the King of kings, Lord of lords, Creator of Heaven and Earth, and He makes Himself available to you. He works with your schedule; He meets on your terms. With Jesus, there is no need for portion control. You can super-size Him all you want because the more Christ you get, the more you’ll want. Before you know it, you will bear the fruit of your new, spiritually healthy lifestyle. You’ll have more faith to flex. Old habits will melt away, replaced with kindness, gentleness, love, peace, perseverance, and joy. Yes, you will experience true joy. In spite of your circumstances. You won’t merely tolerate unpleasant people, you will love them. Yes, I’m serious. You will love them with the love of Christ, poured into you by God Himself. He’ll correct your spiritual nearsightedness, and you’ll see things through the lens of eternity. Trials and storms will start to make sense, but when they don’t, you will rest in the knowledge that God works all things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purposes. Your life will have purpose. Where you once coasted aimlessly, you’ll live each day intentionally. You will do more than you dreamed you could do, for when you operate in the power of Christ, there are no limits. And you will have peace. Come to the table. Even now He beckons you. Take time every day to focus on Him in silence. Ask Him what He wants to say to you. Don’t read through Scripture quickly as a duty, but chew on every Spirit-inspired word. Enjoy it. Meditate on it, process it, and move on to the next bite.

THE TABLE IS SET. THE FEAST IS READY. AND YOU, FRIEND, ARE HIS GUEST OF HONOR. HOW SWEET YOUR WORDS TASTE TO ME; THEY ARE SWEETER THAN HONEY. —PSALM 119:103

WOOD GRILL OR FIRE PIT

The right grilling method, in conjunction with a solid rub, marinade, or seasoning, can uncover new dimensions of flavor in meat, seafood, and vegetables. The trick is finding the right grill for your situation—one that interests you and challenges your imagination. Whether you’re a grill master with a rep to defend or you’re just learning your way around the grill, we’re taking a quick look at some of the most popular options this month.

Pros • Can pull double duty keeping you warm while you cook • Generally fairly large so you can cook more at a time • With a rotisserie apparatus, you can cook whole birds or roasts • Fun for cooking hot dogs, sausages, small game birds, or shish-kabobs on a skewer Cons • Takes longer to get started • Firewood can be expensive • Food may need to be precooked a bit

CHARCOAL GRILL

SMOKER

Pros • Easy to find and doesn’t require many special accessories or fuel • Inexpensive, starting well under $100 • Basic charcoal briquettes can be found at any supermarket, with lump charcoal, made from real chunks of hardwood without additives, only slightly harder to find • Great grill taste, especially with mesquite, hickory, or maple wood to add smoke flavor • Versatile, able to cook any type of food—from direct heat searing to indirect heat roasting, even rotisserie and smoker cooking • Easily portable varieties widely available

Pros • Intense smoke flavor • Low temperatures over a long period makes food tender, succulent, and savory Cons • Not as versatile for all types of cooking or grilling • A similar effect can be achieved with a gas or charcoal grill with low indirect heat and added wood chunks for smoky flavor • Generally bulkier

Cons • Can be messy and leaves behind ash • Takes time to reach the temperature you want • Can be tricky to get going without a chimney starter or lighter fluid

PROPANE GAS GRILL

INFRARED GRILL BURNER

Pros • Easy to start, almost instantly ready to use, and less messy than charcoal • Intense heat and grill grid create a nice seared surface on foods adding flavor • Extras available, such as side burners for cooking sauces and soups • Fuel is generally inexpensive

Pros • Higher temperatures than your charcoal or normal gas grills • Sears cuts of meat quickly, locking in the juices Cons • No smoky flavor and you can’t add a smoker box • More expensive and harder to maintain than other options • Doesn’t work well with larger cuts of meat

Cons • No wood smoke flavor in basic configuration • Some say gas can give food an odd taste • Propane tank requires refilling (and probably a backup tank just in case) • Flame disbursement units and covers can rust or wear out over time
