publisher’s letter

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.

– Psalm 9:1

When the Apostle Paul wrote, “Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:19–20), he did so from a cold, dank, prison cell, manacled and chained, half-starved, unjustly accused, brutally beaten, and away from his support system. Now, that’s what I call “thanks-living”.

To Paul, Thanksgiving wasn’t a once-a-year celebration with turkey and cranberry relish. It was a daily reality and a personal commitment that changed his life and taught him to be content—even joyful—in any circumstance. How much more should we focus on the blessings in our lives, the greatest of which is our invitation to have a real, personal, and relevant relationship with our Creator? This month, I hope you join me in celebrating all that this life has given us and the One who gives us life to begin with—and that more abundantly.

We hope you enjoy meeting some of the winners of our annual Best-of competition as voted on by you, our readers. These are outstanding men and women who do so much to make our community one of the best places in the US to live, work, worship, and play.

Thank you all for all you do!

AN ASSURANCE THAT TREMBLES

WHEN FORGOTTEN CLAUSES LEAD TO FORGOTTEN FEAR

Imet Chris in 2000, while standing in line on orientation day at Bible college. We immediately hit it off. Our testimonies were similar; he had also recently come out of a difficult life of drugs and worldly pursuits and had turned to God. We managed to become roommates, and over the next couple years we grew closer and closer. We went mountain biking together, worked out together, and played basketball together. We worshipped together and prayed together. We were accountability partners. As iron sharpens iron, we challenged and sharpened one another. Perhaps what we both enjoyed most, though, was our deep, and sometimes difficult, conversations about theology and the nature of this God we were trying to understand and know.

Had someone asked me during that time, Is Chris your brother in Christ?, I would have certainly answered, Yes, of course he is! Had

someone asked Chris during that time if he was saved, I believe that he would also have answered, Yes. He would have professed a belief that Jesus Christ was the Son of the Living God, and that He died to forgive his sins. He would have proclaimed Christ as his Lord and Savior.

But in the 20 years that followed us graduating Bible college, something happened. Time passed. Worldly cares crept in. The pride of life — success and wealth — crept in. Fleshly desires took root. They choked the seed of God’s Word that had been planted in Chris’ heart. Sadly, Chris has now abandoned the faith. To be clear, he has not merely backslid; he has rejected the faith. He no longer believes that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation. He no longer believes the Scriptures to be the inerrant and infallible Word of God. He has proved himself to be an apostate.

Although I cannot stand in the place of

Christ and pronounce final judgment on the soul of any man, every indication shows that Chris is not my brother in Christ — he is not saved. But if that is true, does it mean that he has lost his salvation? No, it does not. It means that he never had salvation in the first place. He was the seed sown among the thorns (Matthew 13:18-23) He was a tare sown among the wheat (Matthew 13:24-30). Chris started the race well, but he did not finish. He did not persevere to the end.

I share this story of Chris only to serve as a backdrop for a question I would like to ask you today: Do you know that you are saved? How would you answer that question?  Would it give you pause? Or would you immediately answer with a resounding Yes!?

Now I’d like to go a step further and ask you something else: How should you answer that question? For more clarity, let me

WHAT IS THE CURRENT TRAJECTORY OF MY LIFE AND THE STATE OF MY INNER MAN — TODAY – IN THE PRESENT MOMENT — IN THE CURRENT SEASON I AM IN?

ask it this way: How should you process that question before giving an answer? How are we, as professing believers, supposed to process and answer the question of whether or not we are truly saved? What is the “assurance of salvation” supposed to look like in the life of a believer, according to the Scriptures?

I would like to propose to you today that there has been a radical shift in the last 100 —200 years in the way most professing believers process and answer the most important question in life: Am I truly saved? May I further propose that this change in the way most believers process and answer that question will no doubt have eternal consequence for many.

The majority of Christians today view the “assurance of their salvation” as something that is to be settled within themselves, once and for all. They typically look to some point in the past, where a decision was made for Christ, and they proclaim themselves saved — eternally secure. They look to experiences, and what they deem to be the “fruit” those experiences bore, as evidence that they are in fact saved. When asked the question “Are you saved?” they give a casual and immediate response — “Absolutely” — and then go about their day. No need to ponder and examine; they settled that question long ago. Once saved – Always saved!

Furthermore, many would view any doubt or inquiry as to the genuineness of their salvation, whether coming from within themselves or from others, as an attack from the enemy that should be immediately cast aside.

However, for the majority of church history, up until about 150 years ago, the assurance of salvation was approached much differently. Our church fathers, and the Scriptures, distinguished between two types of assurance: present assurance and final assurance. Present assurance of their salvation was based on where they were at in their present — today. To be clear, when I say “today” I am using the word figuratively, as an all-encompassing word for the present season and moment of one’s life.

Saints of the past would walk in a “present assurance” of their salvation, based on the state of their soul today. The state of their conscience today. The fruit in their life today. Their current relationship with God’s Word. The current manifestation of their love for the brethren and the Church of Christ. They would ask themselves, What is the current

trajectory of my life and the state of my inner man — today – in the present moment — in the current season I am in? Based on their answer to that question, they may or may not walk in all of the glorious fruit, and benefits, that come with a strong present assurance of their salvation.  But here is what they would certainly not do: Our forefathers, and the Apostles themselves, would not have dreamed of looking to some moment or decision or experience from the past as the basis of their assurance.

But why? Why would they not adopt the same approach as the modern believer today?  Why would they not look to that time 15 years ago when they made a decision for Christ, changed some of their sinful habits, and even got baptized? The answer to that question is this: Because they believed in final assurance. They understood that there is only one final and true test as to the genuineness of one’s salvation: Did they endure to the end? Did they persevere? Did they finish the race? They looked out at the landscape of Christianity around them and saw the same things we see today; men were dropping like flies, abandoning the faith. They saw apostates, men like my friend Chris, who once believed according to sound biblical teaching, but had now forsaken the truth, perhaps for a more progressive and tolerant approach.

Now that I have laid the foundation, I can get to the crux of the matter: As our forefathers looked out upon the landscape of Christianity and saw the great number of those who were falling away from the faith, they did not assume themselves to be above such a falling away. No, they recognized the deceitfulness of their own hearts and the power of the sin that still dwelled within them. It was their humble acknowledgment of their own weakness, combined with the warnings of Scripture, which compelled them daily to throw themselves upon the grace and power of Christ to preserve them and keep them from falling away. They enjoyed the benefits of a present assurance of their salvation, all the while knowing that they had not yet attained final assurance, and therefore, as Paul said, they needed to work out their salvation with fear and trembling! (Philippians 2:12) May we consider some of the words of the great saints that have gone before us…

HOW STUDENTS CAN SUPPORT FORMER MILITARY MEMBERS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES Giving Back

For those who have served in the U.S. armed forces, transitioning back to civilian life can be a challenge. However, community support can help make the transition easier for many veterans and provide those who offer that support — particularly young people — with rewarding opportunities and insight.

Take, for example, Daniel Finney, who started volunteering at a local Department of Veterans Affairs hospital where his mother worked when he was 13 years old. At first, his mother simply wanted him to learn from the veterans and their experiences, but volunteering changed the trajectory of Finney’s life.

He volunteered almost daily for the next 10 years, even inviting his friends to join him at the hospital. From that experience, Finney built valuable skills and chose to pursue a career as a physician’s assistant.

“I chose to volunteer at the hospital not only because it was a great opportunity, but because I wanted to give back to our nation’s heroes who I felt were too often overlooked,”

Finney said. “In addition, volunteering with dedicated health care professionals allowed me to discover the actual purpose for my current career path.”

Not only did Finney reap personal rewards from volunteering and make a real difference in the lives of veterans, he also received tens of thousands of dollars in college scholarship money from DAV (Disabled American Veterans). The organization annually offers $110,000 in scholarships to student volunteers to be used toward accredited higher learning, including universities, colleges, community colleges and vocational schools.

These scholarships are open to students age 21 or younger who have contributed a minimum of 100 cumulative volunteer hours credited through DAV or DAV Auxiliary. Students can be nominated or may apply with the inclusion of an essay on what volunteering for veterans means to them. Learn more at DAVScholarships.org.

Express Your Gratitude

Simply saying “thank you” can go a long way in expressing gratitude to veterans. Whether it’s through a handwritten note, a heartfelt conversation or a public acknowledgment at a community event, showing appreciation can help veterans feel valued and recognized for their service.

Raise Awareness for Veterans’ Needs

Learning about the challenges veterans face, such as service-related health issues, homelessness and underemployment, then advocating for supportive legislation and programming can go a long way toward improving their situations.

Support Veteran-Owned Businesses

Many veterans transition into entrepreneurship after their military careers, and your patronage not only helps their businesses thrive, but also puts money back into the local community. Look for veteran-owned businesses or use online directories to find veteran entrepreneurs when searching for specific goods and services.

Operation Santa 2025

In September the U.S. Postal Service kicked off the 2025 season of USPS Operation Santa, inviting children and families across the country to begin writing and sending letters to Santa Claus. The beloved program, now in its 113th year, connects letter writers with generous individuals and organizations who help fulfill their holiday wishes.

Letters must be postmarked by Dec. 6 to be eligible for adoption and fulfillment. This year, participants now have the option to fulfill wishes from multiple people within a single household by adopting a family letter.

“For more than a century, USPS Operation Santa has brought communities together to make the holidays brighter,” said Sheila Holman, USPS marketing vice president.

“Each year, we receive far more letters than we have adopters, and this year we want to change that — especially by encouraging participants to adopt family letters, which makes it possible to fulfill the wishes of an entire household at once.”

The Postal Service is also making it easier than ever for participants to fulfill holiday wishes. The USPS Operation Santa online gift catalog — introduced last year to streamline the fulfillment and shipping experience — will feature a significantly expanded selection with thousands of items. When letter adoption opens on Nov. 17, adopters will be able to shop and ship conveniently and directly from the online catalog.

For more information and full program guidelines, including important dates and details on how to write a letter or participate by fulfilling a letter, visit USPSOperationSanta.com

AND THE WINNERS

SWAPP ORTHODONTICS

Have you ever thought about randomly putting your hands in someone’s mouth? Hopefully not many have—and no one should (because that’s obviously gross). Yet, there are thousands of dentists and orthodontists around the world who do just that.

“Every day I ask kids what they want to be when they grow up,” said Dr. Aaron Swapp. “In all the years I’ve asked, maybe one has answered ‘orthodontist’. Little do they know—it’s the greatest profession in the world.”

Aaron Swapp’s path to orthodontics began with the influence of a remarkable mentor—his Boy Scout leader who was also a dentist. “Right away, I was intrigued by the technical side of dentistry,” he said. “But I was even more impacted by his dedication to serving his patients and his community. That example stuck with me and I still draw upon it today.”

After eleven years of higher education, Dr. Swapp achieved his dream of becoming an orthodontist. He began his career in Plano, Texas, working alongside one of the most respected orthodontists in the region. “He was incredible,” Dr. Swapp said. “Under his guidance, I learned not just how to create beautiful smiles but how to create a positive, relaxed experience for patients. People were genuinely happy to be at his practice.”

It wasn’t long before Dr. Swapp branched out and began his own practice in Mansfield, Texas. The transition was nothing short of dramatic. “Within three days, my wife and I bought a house, took over a practice, moved across the Metroplex, and delivered our fourth child,” he laughed. “The delivery was the biggest surprise. The baby came so fast we didn’t make it to the hospital. I ended up delivering her in our bathroom, with a 911 operator on the phone. I even used dental floss to tie off the umbilical cord. Thankfully, everything went perfectly. And have I mentioned my wife is amazing.”

Once settled, Dr. Swapp poured his energy into building the kind of practice he’d always envisioned. “It’s surreal looking back at those early days,” he said. “I wanted to provide amazing orthodontic results in a fun and comfortable environment. I wondered if patients would like what Swapp Orthodontics had to offer?” Thousands of smiles later, it appears that they do.

“Our practice is very family-oriented,” he continued. “My goal is to treat every patient as if they were a member of my own family. I have an amazing team and together we’re always looking for ways we can go above and beyond—to make each visit a great experience.”

My goal is to treat every patient as if they were a member of my own family. I have an amazing team and together we’re always looking for ways we can go above and beyond—to make each visit a great experience.

Dr. Swapp and his staff pride themselves on using cutting-edge technology to enhance patient care. “We have a state-of-the-art 3D scanner that captures a full digital model of a patient’s teeth without the gooey impression material,” he said. “It’s a great option for our clear aligner patients.” Swapp Orthodontics also offers clear braces and clear aligner treatment for cosmetically conscious patients.

The practice is the only private orthodontic office in the area to provide the Damon bracket system for every patient at no additional charge. “These braces have small doors that hold the wires in place,” Dr. Swapp explained. “They allow for more efficient tooth movement and can reduce the number of appointments needed. Plus, the clear version looks amazing.”

Health and long-term results are another key focus at Swapp Orthodontics. “We place a huge emphasis on keeping teeth healthy throughout treatment,” he said. “I’ve seen cases where the teeth are straight, but white scars appear around the braces from poor brushing. To help prevent that, we apply a protective seal around every brace and provide each patient with an electric toothbrush. With this, and our retainer warranty program, we’re able to ensure patients have a healthy and longlasting smile.”

Dr. Swapp is known for his accessibility and genuine interest in his patients’ lives. He’s fluent in Spanish and takes pride in serving the local Latin community. “Being able to communicate directly with patients and parents in their own language builds trust and connection,” he said. “It’s one of the most rewarding parts of my job.”

He’s also deeply involved in his community— volunteering at local schools, coaching youth soccer, and serving as a church youth leader. “I love working with kids and helping them build confidence and character,” he said. “That passion for teaching probably comes from my mom, who was an elementary school teacher for decades. She taught me that service and education can change lives.”

Whether in his practice, his church, or the classroom, Dr. Swapp’s passion for teaching shines through. He’s served on his orthodontic alumni board for over a decade, lectures on 3D imaging and aligner treatment, and continues to mentor students at Baylor College of Dentistry. “Many people have shared their knowledge with me,” he said. “Teaching is how I give back.”

MEET DR. SWAPP

Dr. Swapp graduated summa cum laude from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine, earning the Dean’s Award for top academic honors. He completed his

orthodontic residency at Baylor College of Dentistry, where he received the Baylor Orthodontic Oscar for the best-treated case in his class. He went on to achieve board certification, a distinction historically earned by only a small percentage of orthodontists nationwide. He has published multiple dental research articles, and was honored with the prestigious Watson Award, given for the top-rated orthodontic research article of the year.

When he’s not crafting smiles, Dr. Swapp enjoys woodworking, hiking, camping, working on cars, and spending time with his wife, Ashley, and their four children. “It was hard to know if I would like orthodontics when I started on this educational journey,” Dr. Swapp said. “But I’m one of the fortunate people who love what they do.”

MANSFIELD FAMILY DENTISTRY - DR. CODY BAUER

Patients of Mansfield Family Dentistry weren’t surprised to hear their favorite dental practice has—once again this year—been selected Best Cosmetic Dentist and Best Family Dentist by Living Magazine readers. The legacy of know-you-by-name dental care established in the 80s by Dr. John and Terri Bauer is lovingly carried on by their son, Dr. Cody Bauer. And even after Dr. John’s well-deserved retirement, Terri has stayed on to run the office and greet longtime patients by name.

Dr. Cody not only adds a breath of fresh air to the family practice but brought with him a commitment to the latest advanced dental technology, a passion for cosmetic dentistry, and a commitment to proactive oral care that considers not just the teeth and gums but their direct impact on the health of the rest of the body.

FULL MENU OF SERVICES

“Just as my dad did, I complete hundreds of hours of continuing education every year and invest in the latest, cutting-edge dental technology, so we can provide our patients with cosmetic procedures such as tooth whitening, porcelain veneers, inlays, onlays, Invisalign clear braces, and permanent dental implants, right here in their dental home,” Dr. Cody said. “And if there are procedure they’d like us to offer, we’re open to looking into them and incorporating them into the practice.”

MANSFIELD’S FAVORITE DENTAL HOME

It’s not unusual for Dr. Cody to treat a patient that was not only treated by his father, but so were their parents and their parents before them. “We treat three and even four generations of some

It’s my job to provide each patient with the tools they need for a lifetime of vibrant oral health.

families,” Dr. Cody said. “Their trust in Mansfield Family Dentistry is humbling. We want to make sure, once patients are happy here, we offer them everything they need from simple cleanings and fi lling to advanced cosmetic procedures including teeth straightening and full-mouth makeovers—all under one roof.” And as new technologies come along, Dr. Cody is committed to evaluating each one to see whether it’s something that would make care of his patients gentler and more precise.

ORAL HEALTH FOR A LIFETIME

Dr. Cody takes seriously his role as educator to his patients. “It’s my job to provide each patient with the tools they need for a lifetime of vibrant oral health, especially now that links have been established between oral health and the health of the rest of the body and the chance of developing heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and other serious illnesses. Oral health is about much more than beautiful teeth,” he said. “As the adage goes, health mouth, health body.”

HOMETOWN TEAM

Many of the dental assistants and office staff have been on the team for years. “They care about our patients as much as we do,” Dr. Cody said. “They go out of their way to make sure a trip to Mansfield Family Dentistry feels like coming home.” Find out more about this outstanding team at MansfieldDentistry.com.

HEALTH BY HANDS WELLNESS

My vision for Health by Hands has always been of a “One-Stop Body Shop” where patients discover their own personal care plan. I strongly believe in a mind/body/spirit approach to healing.

Dr. Kathi took what she calls “the long road home” to chiropractic, a path filled with purpose, growth, and gratitude. Before opening her Alvarado practice, she worked in banking and also rode and showed horses professionally.

She eventually discovered her true calling while working with her first mentor, Dr. H. Lee Black, who she says “led me into all that I do” and opened doors to some of the top chiropractors and healers in the world. “Chiropractic really chose me,” she says. “It allowed me to live what I teach, that the body has an incredible ability to heal when we listen to it.”

Over the decades, she has become known as a pioneer in holistic and regenerative care, drawing patients from around the world who seek her expertise in chronic pain, injury recovery, and whole-body healing. She is one of only two Certified Matrix Repatterning Practitioners (CMRP) in Texas and among the few offering advanced Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT) care.

Her approach is rooted in the belief that healing is a partnership built on trust, presence, and a willingness to address the mind, body, and spirit as one. Patients often describe leaving her care not only with less pain but with more energy, clarity, and hope than they have felt in years.

INNOVATIVE THERAPIES, COMPASSIONATE CARE

At Health by Hands Wellness, Dr. Kathi combines expert care, advanced technology, and genuine compassion to address the root causes of pain. Her personalized approach helps restore balance, movement, and vitality, guiding patients toward lasting relief and a healthier, more active life.

SOFTWAVE® TISSUE REGENERATIVE THERAPY

Dr. Kathi recently introduced SoftWave technology to help patients reduce pain, improve circulation, and activate the body’s natural stem cells for deep, lasting tissue repair and recovery. Unlike traditional ShockWave therapy, which uses high-intensity mechanical force

that can be uncomfortable, SoftWave delivers gentle acoustic energy that promotes regeneration and healing safely and effectively.

TBI RECOVERY AND NEUROLOGICAL SUPPORT

Dr. Kathi and her team are achieving remarkable results helping people recover from Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). Using SoftWave Therapy, SuperPatches, gentle chiropractic, and neural retraining, patients often regain balance, clarity, and energy as their bodies and minds heal—redefining holistic chiropractic care as restorative and life-changing. They are also seeing great results with techniques that help improve symptoms for people experiencing pain, fatigue, and neurological challenges, supporting each patient’s journey toward lasting wellness and vitality.

SUPER PATCH™ NEUROTECH

Always at the forefront of innovation, Dr. Kathi also offers SuperPatches, a neurotech advancement that uses subtle frequency signaling to communicate directly with the nervous system. These patches contain no drugs or chemicals, yet they help support focus, energy, balance, calm, and restorative sleep by optimizing how the body’s natural systems interact.

THE BSTRONG4LIFE™ SYSTEM

Exclusive in Texas, this evidence-based strength and bone-building system helps restore mobility, balance, and confidence. It provides a safe, natural way to address osteopenia and osteoporosis without pharmaceuticals, helping patients rebuild strength and stability from the inside out.

TEXAS INSTITUTE FOR NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS

At the Texas Institute for Neurological Disorders (TIND), patients seeking answers to complex neurological conditions find both expertise and compassion in Dr. Dakota Schumacher. A movement disorder specialist as well as a general neurologist, he brings a unique blend of puzzle-solving skill and deep commitment to patient relationships to his work in the Arlington and Grapevine offices.

“I take pride in the relationships I have with my patients,” he explains. “The most important thing to me is getting to know patients, understanding what’s going on, and following them throughout the course of their journeys and their lives.”

FROM PSYCHIATRY TO NEUROLOGY

Dr. Schumacher’s path to neurology began during his undergraduate years. Originally interested in psychiatry, he worked at Austin State Hospital, where he observed a neurologist treating patients with druginduced Parkinson’s disease. The experience was transformative. “I watched him build a relationship with these patients, examine them, put the pieces together, and explain what was happening in their bodies. That really intrigued me and shifted my focus toward neurology,” he recalls.

From that pivotal moment, he pursued advanced training in movement disorders, drawn to the unique diagnostic approach the field requires. Unlike many areas of medicine that depend heavily on lab tests or imaging,

I take pride in the relationships I have with my patients. The most important thing to me is getting to know patients, understanding what’s going on, and following them throughout the course of their journeys and their lives.

movement disorder specialists often rely on careful observation, history, and examination. “I like puzzles,” Dr. Schumacher says. “With movement disorders, I can put the pieces together in real time and come up with an answer that can be as good, if not better, than the testing available.”

SPECIALIZED EXPERTISE

Dr. Schumacher treats a wide range of movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, ataxia, dystonia, and gait abnormalities. In his general neurology practice, he also sees patients with seizures, multiple sclerosis, and neuropathy. His treatments reflect the latest standards of care, ranging from medication management to advanced therapies such as:

• Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS): He assists implantation and programming of stimulators for patients with Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, and dystonia.

• Botulinum Toxin Injections: Used for tremors, dystonia, torticollis, and related conditions.

• Cutting-Edge Therapies: He helps program newly released dopaminebased infusion pumps and other advanced delivery systems.

TRANSFORMING LIVES

For Dr. Schumacher, the most rewarding moments come when patients experience

dramatic improvements through advanced treatments. He describes turning on a deep brain stimulator for the first time in a patient with advanced Parkinson’s disease: “They go from being very dysfunctional — hardly able to do anything for themselves — to being able to steady their hand, walk, or do things they haven’t been able to do for years. People sometimes cry, and I sometimes get choked up. It’s one of the most gratifying things in medicine.”

PATIENT-CENTERED PHILOSOPHY

Ultimately, Dr. Schumacher views his role as both diagnostician and translator — helping patients understand what is happening in their bodies and guiding them through treatment. “My goal is to be there for the patient, give them an opportunity to be heard, and translate what I see into understanding and hope,” he says.

That combination of clinical excellence and genuine compassion makes Dr. Schumacher a trusted choice for patients across North Texas seeking neurological care.

Treat Yourself, Mindfully

HOW TO KEEP BALANCED EATING HABITS ALL SEASON LONG

The holidays bring an abundance of joy, family gatherings, and of course, delicious food. From festive parties to home-cooked feasts, it’s a season fi lled with indulgence at every turn. While it’s tempting to let healthy routines slide, it is possible to enjoy the flavors of the season without starting the new year feeling sluggish. With a few mindful strategies, you can savor holiday traditions and stay on track with your wellness goals.

Advanced joint care for every season of life

START WITH A BALANCED PLATE

When filling your plate at a holiday gathering, think balance first. Begin with vegetables or salad to add fiber and color, then include a source of lean protein. From there, choose a few favorite holiday sides and a small dessert. This method allows you to enjoy seasonal favorites without going overboard.

STAY HYDRATED

Amid the toasts and festive drinks, it’s easy to forget about water. Dehydration often disguises itself as hunger, which can lead to unnecessary snacking. Keep a water bottle nearby and alternate a glass of water between cocktails or celebratory beverages.

DON’T SKIP MEALS

It can be tempting to “save up” for a big dinner by skipping breakfast or lunch. That strategy usually backfi res. Arriving at a holiday gathering overly hungry makes it harder to make mindful choices.

Instead, eat balanced meals throughout the day such as eggs and avocado toast in the morning or a hearty salad at lunch so you feel steady and satisfied.

PRACTICE MINDFUL INDULGENCE

Part of the holiday joy comes from savoring special dishes that only appear once a year. Instead of piling your plate high with everything, take smaller portions of the foods that mean the most to you. Slow down, enjoy the flavors, and listen to your body’s cues.

MOVE YOUR BODY

Healthy habits extend beyond the table. A family walk after dinner, a quick yoga session, or even dancing in the living room keeps energy levels high and digestion moving smoothly.

GIVE YOURSELF GRACE

Finally, remember that one indulgent meal does not undo your overall healthy lifestyle. The holidays are meant to be enjoyed. If you go a little overboard, simply reset at the next meal rather than dwelling on it.

Smart Swaps for the Holiday Table

• Use Greek yogurt instead of heavy cream in mashed potatoes for a lighter, protein-packed version.

• Replace half the butter in baked goods with applesauce or mashed banana to reduce fat and add natural sweetness.

• Mix wild rice or quinoa into stuffing for extra fiber and a nutty flavor.

• Serve desserts in mini portions or use smaller plates to keep indulgences satisfying without excess.

• Choose sparkling water with a splash of cranberry juice or citrus slices for a festive, low-sugar alternative to cocktails or sodas.

PREVENTING GUM DISEASE

WHY REGULAR CARE MATTERS

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. Yet, gum disease remains one of the most common oral health issues, affecting nearly half of adults over the age of 30, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The good news is that gum disease is largely preventable. A combination of professional cleanings, consistent home care, and an understanding of how oral health connects to overall wellness can make a significant difference.

PROFESSIONAL CLEANINGS SET THE STAGE

Visiting your dentist regularly is one of the most effective ways to prevent gum problems. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends professional cleanings at least twice a year. These visits remove plaque and tartar buildup that brushing and flossing cannot always reach. Hygienists can also spot early warning signs such as inflammation or bleeding gums, which can be addressed before they develop into more serious conditions like periodontitis.

HOME CARE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

What you do between dental visits is equally important. Brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day remain the gold standards. The ADA also notes that antimicrobial mouth rinses can help reduce bacteria and freshen breath. Consistency matters more than perfection. By creating a routine you stick with, you reduce the risk of harmful plaque accumulating and damaging your gums.

THE WHOLE-BODY CONNECTION

Gum health is not just about your mouth. Studies show that untreated gum disease may be linked to other serious health concerns, including diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory illness. The Mayo Clinic points out that bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream, triggering inflammation in other parts of the body. In turn, certain conditions like diabetes can make it harder for the body to fight infections, increasing the likelihood of gum complications.

MAKING PREVENTION A PRIORITY

Think of gum care as an investment in your overall well-being. Staying current with cleanings, practicing consistent oral hygiene, and being mindful of the connection between oral and systemic health allows you to protect more than just your smile. Taking action today reduces the likelihood of painful treatments tomorrow and helps you maintain a brighter, healthier life.

Rooted in Success

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO PLANTING TREES

From improved air quality and increased wildlife habitation to enhanced property values and aesthetics, planting trees offers numerous benefits that contribute to a healthier environment and more beautiful landscape.

However, selecting the right tree is crucial for ensuring its long-term health and compatibility with your property. Consider factors such as soil type, climate and the tree’s size when fully mature as well as your purpose for planting the tree — such as shade, fruit or ornamental beauty — to help narrow down your choices and select a tree that meets your requirements.

Once you’ve selected the perfect tree (or trees) for your property, follow these steps to plant a tree that will thrive for years to come.

• Choose a location that offers ample space for the tree’s roots and canopy to grow. Avoid areas with overhead power lines or underground utilities.

• Test the soil drainage in the chosen location by digging a hole and filling it with water. If the water drains within a few hours, the soil has acceptable drainage. If it takes longer, select a different site or add organic matter to the soil.

• Dig a hole 2-3 three times wider than the tree’s root ball but no deeper than its height to encourage the roots to grow outward into the surrounding soil.

• Remove the tree from its container or burlap wrapping, taking care not to damage the roots.

• Place the tree in the hole, ensuring the root flare (where the roots spread at the base of the tree) is level with or slightly above ground level.

• Backfill the hole with excavated soil, tamping it down gently to eliminate air pockets.

• Water the tree thoroughly to provide initial moisture to the roots.

• Apply a 2-3-inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk to prevent rot.

As your tree grows, periodic maintenance can help ensure its health and structural integrity. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Prune the tree to remove dead or diseased branches and shape its growth. Fertilize as needed based on soil test results and tree species requirements.

If you have questions, local nurseries or county extension offices can provide recommendations tailored to your area.

Holiday Flavors Reimagined

UPDATES ON TRADITIONAL DESSERTS YOU’LL WANT TO SERVE AGAIN & AGAIN BY

PECAN PIE BROWNIES

SERVINGS: 12 | PREP: 20 MIN. | COOK: 60 MIN. | TOTAL: 1 HR. 20 MIN.

INGREDIENTS: Brownies: ½ cup butter (1 stick) | 2 cups chocolate chips | ½ cup light brown sugar | 1 ¼ cup granulated sugar | 4 eggs | 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract | 1 tsp. kosher salt | ½ cup unsweetened cocoa | ½ cup flour Pecan Pie Topping: ⅓ cup light corn syrup | ⅔ cup brown sugar | 2 eggs | 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract | ½ tsp. kosher salt | 4 Tbsp. butter, melted | 2 cups pecans, chopped

DIRECTIONS: PREHEAT oven to 325°. LINE bottom of a 9 x 13-inch baking pan with parchment paper. GREASE the pan with cooking spray; set aside. MELT one stick of butter in a saucepan over medium-high heat. REMOVE from heat when butter begins to boil, add chocolate chips, stirring gently together until fully combined. WHISK brown sugar, granulated sugar, eggs, vanilla, and salt in a separate bowl. ADD chocolate mixture and whisk to combine. SIFT cocoa powder and flour into the wet ingredients. STIR until fully blended. POUR batter into prepared pan and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, for about 35 mins. PREPARE the pecan pie topping while brownies are baking. WHISK together the corn syrup, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla, salt, and melted butter in a saucepan over medium heat until combined and the sugar is dissolved. STIR continuously until the mixture thickens. STIR in pecans and set aside. POUR the pecan mixture over the baked brownies and spread evenly with a spoon. BAKE for an additional 25 mins. until the pecan pie topping is set. ALLOW to cool completely before slicing.

TIPS & TRICKS: Use brownie mix instead of making it from scratch. Follow package directions — once baked, top with the pecan pie topping recipe.

FRENCH APPLE TART

SERVINGS: 12 | PREP: 1 HR. 25 MIN. | COOK: 1 HR. | TOTAL: 2 HR. 25 MIN.

INGREDIENTS: Pastry Dough: 2 cups all-purpose flour | 1 tsp. kosher salt | 2 Tbsp. granulated sugar | 12 Tbsp. cold, unsalted butter (1 ½ sticks) | ⅓ cup ice water Apple Filling: 4 Honeycrisp apples, peeled, sliced | 1 lemon, juiced | ⅓ cup sugar | 1 tsp. cinnamon | ½ cup apple butter or preserves | 4 Tbsp. unsalted butter, cold, diced (½ stick)

DIRECTIONS: ADD flour, salt, and sugar to a food processor. PULSE to combine. ADD the cold butter, one tablespoon at a time, and pulse until the butter is combined with the flour mixture into small bits. POUR the cold water in slowly, while the processor is running, just until the dough comes together. DUMP the dough onto a floured board and knead it into a ball. WRAP in plastic and refrigerate for 1 hr. PREHEAT the oven to 400°. GREASE a tart pan with cooking spray. ROLL the dough slightly larger than your pan. TRIM the edges with a small knife. REFRIGERATE dough while you prepare the apples. PEEL , core, and slice apples in half, then cut slices. PLACE apple slices in water with lemon juice until ready to use. DRAIN apples. TOSS apples in cinnamon and sugar. REMOVE tart pan from fridge and spread ¼ cup of apple butter onto the bottom of the dough. LAYER the apples in a circular pattern. DOT with butter. BAKE for 45 mins. to 1 hour until the edges of the apples start to brown. BLEND the remaining ¼ cup of apple butter with 1 Tbsp. of water. BRUSH the apples and the tart edges completely with the jelly mixture. SERVE warm.

TIPS & TRICKS: Pie dough or pastry dough can be substituted. If using puff pastry dough, use a regular pie pan or sheet pan instead of the tart pan.

GINGERSNAP PUMPKIN PIE

SERVINGS: 12 | PREP: 45 MIN. | COOK: 1 HR. 25 MIN. | TOTAL: 2 HR. 10 MIN.

INGREDIENTS: Gingersnap Crust: 2 cups gingersnap cookies (set aside 10-13 cookies for garnish) | 2 Tbsp. brown sugar | 1 Tbsp. granulated sugar | 1 tsp. cinnamon | ½ cup butter melted Pumpkin Pie Filling: 1 can (30 oz.) LIBBY’S® 100% Easy Pumpkin Pie Mix | 1 can (12 oz.) evaporated milk | 2 eggs Cinnamon Whipped Cream: 1 ½ cups heavy whipping cream | ¼ cup powdered sugar | 2 tsp. vanilla extract | 1 tsp. cinnamon

DIRECTIONS: PREHEAT oven to 425°. ADD gingersnap cookies to a food processor. PULSE until cookies are crumbs. ADD brown sugar, sugar, and cinnamon and pulse until combined. POUR crumbs into a mixing bowl and add melted butter. STIR until moistened. GREASE a deep 9-inch pie pan with cooking spray. PRESS gingersnap cookie crust onto the bottom of the pan. BAKE for 10 mins. to set the crust. MAKE the pumpkin pie filling following the directions on the can in a separate bowl. POUR over cooled crust. BAKE for 15 mins. REDUCE oven temperature to 350° BAKE for 40-50 mins. or until a knife inserted comes out clean. COOL on a wire rack. MAKE cinnamon whipped cream. Beat heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon until it forms peaks. PIPE whipped cream into swirls using a pastry bag onto the pie once it is cooled. ADD cookies for decoration. Serve immediately or refrigerate.

TIPS & TRICKS: You can use any brand of pumpkin pie filling or puree. Follow directions, depending on the can, if you need to add spices or the amount of evaporated milk or eggs changes.

Together they make your fireplace the season’s star, blending soft textures and architectural form in one beautifully balanced holiday vignette.
