A new beginning

With so much emphasis on physical health following the over indulgence of Christmas, mental health can easily be overlooked. But, the start of a new year can be a great time to focus on improving mental health with the support of a trained counsellor. Whilst mental health is talked about more openly than before, there is still a lot of confusion about how to find a counsellor. This can be particularly hard if left until the point of crisis.

I always suggest starting with a GP who can advise you of your options. Or, some employers offer what is called an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which offers and pays for a pre-agreed number of sessions. Alternatively, if you would like to find a counsellor yourself, there are various local counselling agency’s which offer low cost or income assessed fees. You can find these via Google. You can also check out local agency’s or individual counsellor profiles on the following site ...https://www.counselling-directory.org.uk

This is an official site where all members must prove their qualifications and training in order to advertise. You can search by location, budget, experience, area of expertise or whether online, phone or in person.

It can feel hugely daunting to seek out a counsellor for the first time and as with most such endeavours, the first step can be the hardest. Counselling can facilitate an exploration of previously unexamined thoughts, feelings and experiences that may otherwise manifest via unhealthy habits or even physical symptoms. The self awareness and understanding that follows can support you to make healthier, more fulfilling choices in 2023.
