It’s more than just a venue; it’s a dynamic artistic hub that champions inclusion and diverse perspectives. The Rep strives to make theater accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or ability to pay, using the stage to explore our world through the experiences of others.
Their core programming features freshly conceived productions in their downtown facilities, which include a 340-seat auditorium and a more intimate 100-seat black box space. These live experiences are crafted to entertain, provide an escape, help audiences process current events and foster mutual understanding. Beyond the main season, The Rep also aims to use theatrical activities to improve mental well-being and emotional development, providing a platform for sharing human experiences that drive community conversations. What do you love most about living in your neighborhood? The diverse people of the community and the walkability!
Would you recommend your neighborhood to people with pets? How about people with children? I think downtown in general is very pet-friendly. The MacArthur Dog Park is one of my favorite spots to take my dog, Chester. We are able to walk to the dog park from our shop or our house. I think downtown is also great for kids. There are so many attractions and activities to entertain the young ones. One of my favorite overlooked spots is the sculpture park down by the river.
What’s a hidden gem or favorite local spot in the area you’d recommend? Hands down, Maryam’s Grill in the Tower Building. They have one of the best lunches in town! And I am dying to try their Saturday brunch.
Does your neighborhood hold any annual events or traditions that are unique to it? Yes! So many! My favorite event is 2nd Friday Art Night, which happens at several downtown businesses and institutions every 2nd Friday. I’m also a big fan of the annual Downtown Food Truck Festival and the Bright the Night event before Christmas.
If someone were considering moving here, what’s the most important piece of advice you’d give them? Just do it. Living downtown is fabulous.

Little Rock Central High School holds a significant place in both educational history and the American Civil Rights Movement. Constructed in 1927 and originally known as Little Rock Senior High School, it was celebrated as “America’s Most Beautiful High School” and was the largest in the nation at that time. Its crucial role in the Civil Rights Movement led to its designation as a National Historic Site in 1998. It remains the sole operating high school to be listed as such. A visitor center and museum situated across the street offer insights into the desegregation crisis and the broader Civil Rights Movement.

What do you love most about living in your neighborhood? Number one on the list is the inclusivity of our SoMa. The majority of our residents and business owners promote and encourage love, acceptance and inclusivity in all of its forms. I placed a decal over my businesses (Electric Ghost & AR-T’s) that says “SAFE SPACE” so that minorities know they are welcome and will be in a safe space when they enter my establishment, and the same applies to my home.
If you had to pick three words to describe your neighborhood, what would they be? Inclusive, Artistic and Local — When I go traveling, I always look for a neighborhood that is like SoMa. It’s the artsy street with all of the locally owned shops and restaurants where the locals go to hang out. You can feel the sense of community in the air! It’s the reason I opened my business AND live in SoMa!
What’s a hidden gem or favorite local spot in the area you’d recommend? It’s REALLY hard to narrow it down to one since we have so many wonderful, locally owned shops and restaurants. We also have a large number or queer-owned shops and restaurants, which I truly love, BUT if I have to name ONE, at the moment I have to mention the wonderful staple in our neighborhood, Raduno. Their head chef, Cash Ashley, has been consistently putting out creative and delicious seasonal dishes and even a special Sunday night menu. Their bar never disappoints, and you are guaranteed to run into a friendly face (or 10) while you are there, which always equals an amazing dining experience.
What’s one thing you wish more people knew about your neighborhood? It’s safe. So many people who live outside of Little Rock (and even some who do) think of anywhere close to downtown as a little sketchy, and it makes me cringe every time I hear one of these comments. I’ve been coming to this neighborhood for 10+ years and have lived and worked in our neighborhood for over six years now, and I’ve never had a dangerous or truly concerning incident happen to me. A lot of this can be credited to the amazing Downtown Little Rock Ambassador program, which funds and employs ambassadors to help with safety patrol, litter removal, health and welfare checks, business check-ins and hospitality escorts in and around downtown.
SoMa is a foodie’s delight, offering an eclectic mix of culinary experiences.
Start your day with fresh-baked goods and coffee at Community Bakery Cafe. This stalwart business has thrived in the neighborhood for decades, offering a beloved spot for breakfast, lunch and pastries.
If you’re craving authentic brick-oven pizza, Raduno Brick Oven & Barroom is a must-visit. They serve up fantastic pies in a lively setting, perfect for a casual meal or a night out.
For a vibrant taste of Latin America, El Sur Street Food Co. provides authentic street food flavors. Their menu offers a delightful journey through traditional dishes, bringing a unique culinary experience to SoMa.
And for a sweet treat, Loblolly Creamery is a must-visit. They craft delicious ice cream with unique flavors, perfect for indulging your sweet tooth in a charming atmosphere.
Beyond these highlights, SoMa boasts more culinary gems. The Root Cafe offers locally sourced ingredients, while Rock N Roll Sushi provides a lively spot for sushi. After dinner, unwind at Gigi’s Lounge or Midtown Billiards. SoMa promises a satisfying and diverse culinary journey!

These are the kind of donuts that won’t make it out of the parking lot because the temptation to indulge will take hold of you before you can get the car started. That is, if you can get up early enough to get them! Mark’s Do-Nut Shop is such a staple of the community that we believe the whole of North Little Rock might collapse if they were to stop serving, so popular are these doughy sweet treats that the supply is often cleaned out by 9 a.m.. With a wide selection of mouth-watering breakfast pastries to choose from, every member of the family will be satisfied. We suggest getting up with the sun to be lucky enough to try it out.

Housed in North Little Rock’s oldest brick building, this beloved landmark preserves a charming, vintage feel with its original pressed tin ceiling and hand-laid tile flooring. What do you love most about living in your neighborhood?
The people. Hillcrest has a great mix of interesting and accomplished people who are also usually very unassuming. Secondly, I love that it’s a true walkable neighborhood with residential and commercial blended together. Lastly, the history is second only to maybe downtown’s.
Daniel Bryant Owner of Hill Station and more 20 years in Hillcrest
Would you recommend your neighborhood to people with pets? How about people with children? For better or worse, the hierarchy in Hillcrest is: dogs, kids, and everyone else. If fact, if a dog and its owner step out in front of your car while you’re driving through Hillcrest, you’d be better off bumping the owner than the dog. I don’t think this is a secret. And I can’t think of a better neighborhood for a kid to grow up in.
If you had to pick three words to describe your neighborhood, what would they be? Eclectic, beautiful, historically interesting.
What’s a hidden gem or favorite local spot in the area you’d recommend? These aren’t hidden to those who live here, but getting a cup of coffee from Jeremy at River City, breakfast or a burger from Tad at Leo’s, a record from Wes at Control or a gift from Emese at Box Turtle, and ending with a beer from Kolleen at The Fountain would be a very localized Hillcrest day.
What’s one thing you wish more people knew about your neighborhood? This is easy. I wish more people knew about the network of residents and merchants who volunteer constantly to keep the neighborhood looking and feeling the way that it does. People need to know how much we could use a little of their time and involvement. Teaching your kids the value of volunteerism is one of the greatest gifts.
Does your neighborhood hold any annual events or traditions that are unique to it? We just wrapped up our annual July 4th Ice Cream Social organized by Karen Konarski-Hart. It’s always a hit. But, obviously, HarvestFest is our biggest day of the year. So many volunteers work all year long to plan, organize and execute with the ultimate goal of raising lots of money for different nonprofit neighborhood organizations.
If someone were considering moving here, what’s the most important piece of advice you’d give them? Don’t be scared of an old house, and most importantly, get involved. Your neighborhood is what you make it … and that goes for wherever you live.

What do you love most about living in your neighborhood? We have wild deer that roam the neighborhood at night. That, in combination with the general landscape, is very beautiful and fun to watch multiple times a week.
Would you recommend your neighborhood to people with pets? How about people with children? Yes, and yes! There are many shady areas on the streets where we walk our two corgis, and during those walks, we often see other dogs and neighbors. There is also a playground at Baker Park, located at the intersection of Greenwood Road and Audubon Road, where you can often see kids running around on any given day.
If you had to pick three words to describe your neighborhood, what would they be? Clean, familial and neighborly.
What’s a hidden gem or favorite local spot in the area you’d recommend? We love the store Domestic Domestic on Kavanaugh. Everything sold there is American-made, and it is LGBTQ+ owned. It is a great place for novelty Christmas and birthday gifts for friends and family members.
Does your neighborhood hold any annual events or traditions that are unique to it? Our favorite is the Witches Ride. It’s a Halloween parade of neighbors in golf cart “floats” dressed up as witches. The event has ended the night for the past few years with a live concert in front of Boulevard Bread by Jonathan’s band, The Rocktown Sparks. Those witches know how to party!
If someone were considering moving here, what’s the most important piece of advice you’d give them? You’d better learn to love Heights Taco and Tamale cheese dip, and learn it quickly. That restaurant is always busy for good reason!
Prepare your appetite, because the Heights is a true foodie paradise, boasting a diverse array of delectable dining options, all conveniently situated along or just off Kavanaugh Boulevard. This vibrant district reflects a cutting-edge lifestyle, often featuring innovative menus and fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

If you’re craving artisan breads, delicious sandwiches and a fantastic selection of baked goods, Boulevard Bread Co. is your go-to spot. This local favorite is perfect for a quick and tasty bite, offering high-quality ingredients in a casual setting ideal for breakfast or lunch.
For a cozy and welcoming spot to grab coffee and light meals, look no further than Mugs Cafe. It’s the perfect place to unwind with a handcrafted beverage, enjoy a freshly baked pastry or settle in for a relaxed lunch. Their comfortable ambiance makes it a popular hangout for locals and visitors alike.

Would you recommend your neighborhood to people with pets? How about people with children? I would recommend my neighborhood to people with pets and with kids. People are constantly walking the neighborhood with their dogs and with their kiddos, and are always so friendly. My neighbor also noticed our dogs had gotten out once and brought them back home for us. I feel like I’m surrounded by people who love animals, which is amazing because ours are a little loud.
If you had to pick three words to describe your neighborhood, what would they be? Beautiful, quiet, hilly.
What’s a hidden gem or favorite local spot in the area you’d recommend? Foreman Lake has a goose squad (with one white duck) that you frequently see at the lake and/or walking the neighborhood. They are so cute! I love taking walks near the lake to see them.
What’s one thing you wish more people knew about your neighborhood? There are a lot of young kids/babies! We have a 1-year-old, and I think within a few year, the streets are going to be filled with kids playing due to how many toddlers and strollers I see around!
Does your neighborhood hold any annual events or traditions that are unique to it? Not that I know of.
If someone were considering moving here, what’s the most important piece of advice you’d give them? If you can find a home you love, go for it! Our home was definitely a fixer-upper but we have been able to make changes over time to make it ours! The neighborhood overall is a bit out of our price range but we were able to sneak in because we didn’t look for something perfect!
