Editor’s Letter After what seems like two minutes, rather than two months, we’re back with our autumn edition, once again exploring the very best that this part of the world has to offer. I hope you enjoy the work of Susie Brooks on our front cover, illustrating (quite literally) how lucky we are to have such incredible artists and great locations in this neck of the woods. Talking of the woods, with Halloween just around the corner we have some weird and wonderful tales to share... We really go to town, heading for the darker side of Dorchester in search of ghosts, and meet a few more as we delve into the history of Shaftesbury. During our travels we even encounter two men of steel – one a wire sculptor, the other a hexapod pilot! As is the Arkadian way, we also explore the very best places to eat, drink, sleep and shop, this time placing ourselves firmly in the midst of Shaftesbury town , destroyed by Henry the VIII’s authorities, we set about unearthing the real spirit of this vibrant community, So grab your favourite jumper and pull on those boots – let’s get out there and kick some leaves!

Wired for success aaaaaaaaaaaaaa
From computer programming to building sandcastles on the beach, Robin Wight always knew there was something else bubbling under the surface of his creativity. “It was when the sand castles started getting more and more extravagant that I knew I needed more of an outlet,” he told us. “Crowds of tourists started to gather to watch the castles developing!” Now, having seen some of Robin’s work I wish that I’d had the chance to see him with a bucket and spade! Having launched the artwork, and ‘launched’ is certainly the best way to describe it (2 million hits on a YouTube clip he recently posted), Robin realised that he had something special, and interest in his work means that he now gets around 10 email enquiries every 10 minutes. Based just outside Alton (near Alton Towers), in the house he has bought from selling part of his computer programming business, the talented and ever-so-down-to-earth artist, dad, gardener and visionary, now needs to put his thinking hat on, to decide where to go from here. Gala to celebrate a decade of SCREEN BITES
A MILESTONE has been reached as Screen Bites Food Film Festival celebrates its 10th birthday this year. The anniversary will be celebrated with a gala opening night on 2nd October, in the spectacular setting of St Giles House at Wimborne St Giles by kind permission of Lord Nicholas Ashley-Cooper, the 12th Earl of Shaftesbury. It will be the first time members of the public have an opportunity to see inside the beautiful 17th century house. Guests are invited to come in 17th century costume or party clothes and the party atmosphere will be made complete with exquisite food by chef Lisa Osman of Provisio at All Hallows, based in Wimborne St Giles, and award-winning sparkling wines from Langham Wines, who have a vineyard near Dorchester. The menu has been inspired by the 17th century setting and food in the French film Vatel, which will be screened in the library after the reception in the drawing rooms and music and the producers market in the Stone Hall. Lisa says: “Every party deserves fabulous food and drink and when I sat down to create the menu I kept in mind the film and reflected on our magnificent produce in Dorset.” The food served will include ingredients from producers who have supported Screen Bites for many years, some from the first year, including the Baking Birds, Capreolus, Chococo, Clipper, Dorset Blue Vinny, Dorset Game Larder, Gold Hill Organic Farm Shop, Hall & Woodhouse, Home Farm Shop, Honeybuns, Long Crichel Organic Bakery, Thomas J Fudge’s and Woolsery Cheese Screen Bites is still the UK’s only film festival supporting and promoting local food, alongside films with a food theme from around the world. The festival this year runs from 2nd October to 1st November with events across Dorset from Briantspuddle to Broadwindsor. It includes a children’s Hallowe’en evening at Tarrant Keyneston, the annual joint event at Wareham’s Rex cinema with Purbeck Film Festival and a festive finale at the Exchange at Sturminster Newton. There are guest speakers and a chance each evening to win a meal at one of the area’s finest pubs or restaurants specialising in local sourcing. Tickets for the gala, including the reception, music and film, cost 20 guineas (£21); the usual film evening tickets are £8. A Haunting in ÐorchesteŘ T
he sign said ‘Dorchester Ghost Walk, no need to book, meet at the King’s Arms at 8pm.’ We decided to turn up and see what it was all about. After all, what’s the worst that could happen? So, along with a record crowd of around 30 other shriek-seekers, we paid our money at The King’s Arms on Dorchester’s High East Street and followed our guide into the evening air to discover what ghoulish tales and fiendish characters the town had in store for us. The caped figure, dressed in black, with cane and topper, introduced himself as Alistair Chisholm, who as well as being a well-respected tour guide and historian, is also Dorchester’s Town Crier, a post he has held since 1997. Alistair, who has been leading ghost walks in the town for over 10 years, started by delivering a sombre warning: “What you have paid for is a one way ticket – there are no return tickets to where we are going.” We looked at each other and smiled, nervously. He went on to say that we would finish up in the graveyard – as if to remind us of our mortality, as well as providing useful information about the walk ahead. After a pause to discover where the members of the group had come from (Birmingham to Bovington, on this particular night), it was soon time for our first stop at the old Dorchester Gaol. We were told about the dark history of the prison, built on the site of a Norman castle, before heading down Friary Hill. As the name suggests, this was once the site of a Franciscan Friary and home to the main character of the tale that was about to unfold. Legend has it that, around 20 years ago, a mysterious hooded figure, thought to be the ghost of a monk, was seen in Frome Terrace, at the bottom of Friary Hill. Some 10 years later, the figure was seen again, head down, hurrying along the verge. Then, just one year ago, another sighting was reported nearby, where a tree possesses a peculiar white variegation. It is said that each time the monk walks past, the colour drains from the leaves, turning them ghostly white! We leave Frome Terrace behind us and, as our guide explains that this is the only ghost walk that actually takes you to the other side, we cross the bridge over the Frome! In days gone by, from the far river bank, locals would look up to the prison to watch the many hangings that took place. This method of execution was known as being ‘stabbed with the Bridport dagger’ – a reference to the fact that the ropes used for the hangings were a product of Bridport’s thriving rope-making industry. In 1856, a 16-year old Thomas Hardy stood in the rain and watched the hanging of Martha Brown (the last public hanging of a woman in Dorset) from this very spot – a sight that would haunt him for the rest of his life.

At Hangman’s Cottage, nearby, our guide shared more of the inspiration for Hardy’s The Withered Arm, in which the only cure for the affliction was to touch the arm against the neck of a freshly hanged person. Gruesome stuff! Stopping for a while at the Roman Town House in Colliton Park, we learned about Dorchester’s past as Durnovaria, as it was known to the Romans. At this point, the light was fading fast and as we headed for Colliton House, it became apparent that, in common with many of Dorchester’s illuminated buildings, the house takes on a whole new identity after dark when the warm honey coloured stone glows like burnished gold. We worked our way through Dorchester’s lesser-known side streets, arriving back at High East Street to be greeted by more buildings of gold set against the deep blue sky. We listened to the story of Judge Jeffreys and the Bloody Assizes, and heard the tale of William Barnes’ statue outside St Peter’s Church, which is said to move, ever closer to the edge of the plinth. It used to be said that when the statue fell, ‘Galpin’s folly’ (the clock tower on the nearby Corn Exchange) would also tumble! After another tale featuring Reverend Templeman, who remained a regular visitor to St Peter’s long after his death, our journey took us to the graveyard. In the pitch blackness, our guide wrapped up our fascinating evening and sent us on our way with one more eerie tale and a demonic laugh for good measure. And, as the clock struck ten, we were given one final reminder that the pubs were still open, in case we craved the company of one more spirit before bed time!

LOAFING AROUND... The Olives Et Al story is 21 years old this year, dating back to a time when Captain Henschel became, simply, Giles again and set off in search of adventure, with his wife-to-be Annie, on ‘his and hers’ motorbikes. They planned to ride around the Mediterranean and North Africa and did just that for 12 months, before returning home to a Southampton bedsit where they found themselves with nothing but a diary of their travels, a book full of recipes collected along the way and their heads full of enough wonderful memories to last them a lifetime. Those memories soon drove them to recreate the recipes they had brought home with them and, before long, Giles and Annie found themselves behind a stand at the Rural Living Show, selling jars of olives inspired by their Mediterranean travels.

The date was 28 October 1993 and that fledgling business was what we now know as Olives Et Al. Being the first company to bring olives to the provinces, suddenly Olives Et Al was leading the artisan, speciality food movement, heavily influencing the popularity of not just olives but Mediterranean food in general. They had become ambassadors for the humble olive, making it accessible, beyond the boundaries of London, to discerning consumers countrywide and the numerous shows attended around the country acted as their pop-up shops, allowing them to spread the word about Mediterranean food and Olives Et Al, which soon became synonymous with one another.
Since those early days, Olives Et Al has continued to grow, year on year, but with business values built around the hospitality and warmth that Giles and Annie experienced on their trips abroad, the business retains a local feel and a sense of pride that insists on artisan food with a delicate touch – there are no overengineered offerings here, in fact, OEA’s top sellers today, their ‘Sunshine’, ‘Moorish’ and ‘Classic’ olives, are the same as they were back in 1993. Another vital part of Olives Et Al’s identity is its dry humour. You’ll find examples everywhere, from its witty advertising, to the branding of offspring products, such as Captain Tiptoes Badger Sauce, which contains no badger but does contain references to both Giles’ and Annie’s former careers. Giles’ main focus and drive has always been looking after the business and taking it to the next level, and you can tell that he still craves adventure by the way the business is re-invented every seven years. Olives Et Al’s 21st year is no exception and has already seen the launch of Loaf & Larder, OEA’s gorgeous new deli, at Cheddar Garden Centre. Loaf & Larder offers the finest locally sourced produce, ready for you to take away and combine to make the perfect meal. Perusing the shelves is like looking at the menu of a restaurant that has no tables – a concept that is proving to be extremely popular with customers at Cheddar and, with a Loaf & Larder planned for Aylesbury and another in the pipeline, a concept that, like Olives Et Al itself, is set to become more than just a local phenomenon. With his enthusiasm running as high now as it was 21 years ago, who knows where Giles will lead Olives Et Al in the seven years to come. The natural progression would be for Loaf & Larder to take on the High Street, as an artisan restaurant, tempting passers-by with the irresistible flavours of the Mediterranean. Watch this space – it is amazing how far you can travel, given another seven years! The journey that Giles and Annie embarked upon 21 years ago was never going to be just about the bike ride – the whole 21 years has been a journey. And if you’re wondering what happened to those motorbikes that were so important to the start of this story – the same bikes are taxed and insured and ready to go – this journey isn’t over yet!

Mantis Man
A superhero for the 21st Century Q. Where did your inspiration come from and how on earth did you end up doing this for a living? A. I'm pretty sure my inspiration to work with computers/tech/robots stems from watching films like the Empire Strikes Back, when I was younger. I remember the Hoth scene, with the AT-ATs walking across the snowscape, and thinking, “Wow, machines that walk!” At senior school I developed an interest in all things electronic and mechanical – I loved computerised toys like BigTrak and finding out how things worked. When I was 13, I found a book with plans to build a circuit board that could allow my Commodore 64 computer to control Lego robots. It was amazing! Q. You obviously have a hi-tech background. Where and what did you study to get where you are today? A. After leaving school I started an apprenticeship with Marconi Defence Systems at Portsmouth, studying electronics and computer engineering, but I found that I wanted to apply what I knew to a more creative area. Someone gave me a book on Industrial Light and Magic, featuring many of the films that had inspired me, and this got me thinking, maybe I could work on films. After Marconi, I started a degree at Portsmouth Uni, where I met people making low budget films. I was soon making props and any kind of gizmo that needed electronics. I landed a summer job, at an FX company based at Ealing studios and spotted an opportunity to specialise in computer control systems for animatronic creatures. It was the creative outlet I had been looking for! Having honed my skills, I turned my attention back to walking machines, refining my designs and, more importantly, the software that controlled them, by making dozens of hexapods. One day I get a phone call from a company that builds sub-sea vehicles, asking if my software, HexEngine, could control larger scale hexapods. So, I'm like, “How big?” When he replied, “300 tonnes!” this fuelled my desire to build a hexapod big enough to ride. It was a great way to test the software on a large-scale hexapod and, with this in mind, I managed to secure a business partner and funding for the Mantis project. Q. The Mantis is an incredible piece of kit that involved 4 years of research and development. What were the main challenges associated with turning the concept into reality? A. There were so many challenges, I don't know where to start. Fortunately, for the first year I had enough money for a colleague to help with the project. Josh had a better engineering background than me, so he took on the job of designing the mechanical aspects, while I looked at control systems, software, power, hydraulics etc. I found myself making a mobile, hydraulic machine with 18 axis of synchronised closed-loop hydraulic actuators, powered by a diesel engine. It was a steep learning curve! Q. When asked what you do for a living, what do you say? Inventor? Hexapod Pilot? Please tell me you say Hexapod Pilot. A. Well, I usually say I work in film within creature FX, but then people just look at me blankly, so I say: “I design control systems for animatronic creatures” – still nothing. “OK, I write software and design electronics.” Then I get: “Oh I see, you’re an animator.” “No, we build real robots and animatronic creatures.” Back to the blank expression! I guess many people are so used to computer FX that they find it hard to believe we build these things for real some times. Maybe from now on I should just say I'm a Hexapod pilot and see where that leads! Q. What is it about the hexapod design that makes it work so well and are there applications when quadrapods or octapods would be better suited? A. Well, as the hexapod has six legs, its gait consists of two alternating tripods, where a front and rear leg from one side work with a middle leg from the opposite side and vice versa. This means that the hexapod is supported by a tripod that is statically stable – there are no complex balancing algorithms required to keep the machine upright. I think there is also something aesthetically pleasing about six legs. Quadrupeds require more complex balancing algorithms, but benefit from having fewer moving parts. Octapods are useful if you want a statically stable system with some kind of leg redundancy – you could still walk if two of the legs stopped functioning. Q. There’s something a little bit Frankenstein about what you do. Have you ever had an assistant called Igor? A. Hmmm – not that I can recall! Frankenstein would imply that people see me as a mad scientist or some kind of evil genius, but given that I'm neither a scientist nor a genius, that means I must be mad and/or evil. I'm definitely not evil, so that just leaves mad!

hen invited by a top local chef to join him at his restaurant to taste some new dishes, you’re never really going to say no, are you? That’s what I thought and, me, I’m no different to the next man, except maybe now a tad hungrier.
So, when Neil Duffet called in and invited us over to The Grosvenor Arms in Shaftesbury we were on the phone to the babysitters (grandparents – thanks guys!) before you could say ‘poached duck eggs’. If you’ve had the chance to visit The Grosvenor Arms, you’ll know this is a boutique hotel with 16 individual, stylish rooms and beautifully designed ground floor spaces that include a restaurant, conservatory, bar, café and courtyard. The hotel is well known for its excellent food and, now under the direction of Head Chef Neil Duffet, previously of Lime Wood, the young gifted Chef and his team are offering exciting, inspiring, fresh food. The man at the helm makes a choice on his menu, then quite literally gets into his car of a morning to source the ingredients locally for the forthcoming dishes. Amazingly, he tells me that nobody actually delivers out to Shaftesbury as it is too far. We imagine that this may change once our artisan following read this! We soon recognise some of the wonderful producers on the menu – what we consider to be the best local suppliers, such as local organic butcher Simon Harvell, Chesil Smokery for smoked meat and fish, and Capreolus Fine Foods for charcuterie.

The restaurant has a very calm, laid back feel, which took me by surprise. They’ve built a stone baked oven which gives the place a chic, urban coolness – a feeling that is enhanced by the young, friendly, staff who are impeccably turned out in shirts, denim jeans, aprons and white Converse. In these urbanite surroundings you could be forgiven for thinking you were a world away from the quaint and charming Shaftesbury that appears on the postcards.
We were offered a drink in the bespoke bar, reminiscent of the slingshot saloons of long ago, which has a cocktail menu to die for, and receive the welcome offer of a ‘taster menu’. We settle in with ease, into our comfy sofa, the bright courtyard lighting the inner sanctum with clean, white light. The new GM, Nathan was looking cool, calm and relaxed on this busy week night, as he escorted us to the dining room, a sign of his history of elegant hospitality service, acquired at the best central London eateries. We were ready for the evening to begin... We were served with dishes from across the seven courses (he did say ‘taster menu’, I’m sure!) and we were soon revelling in wonderful wood pigeon pastrami – delicately sliced and wonderfully aromatic.
We devoured Creedy Carver duck breast and heartily tucked into hand-speared Portland plaice, served with fried polenta. Delightful dishes came and went as we devoured one delicious dish after another until we couldn’t move. We ended the evening with a light dessert of poached pear and fresh Chantilly cream and made our way to the bar, a warm inviting place after the sun had dipped its fiery furnace for the day. We relaxed in comfort, very happy that we’d managed to savour such delights. We had also enjoyed the opportunity to meet some tremendous characters and, of course, establish one more ‘local’ to add to the growing list. We can’t wait to return and sample some more ‘tasters’!

Hidden amongst the hills... For any budding artists and photographers looking for a way to distribute their work easily and effectively, a thriving business near Weymouth is presenting the opportunity to help them do just that. Art2Card’s James Kerr is a man with a passion for art, photography and printing. James spent 15 years working in publishing and advertising, in London and Bristol, before taking five years out to follow a life-long dream of high altitude climbing in the Himalayas. Meeting Eli, now his wife, in Bristol, they moved back down to live on the south coast where she grew up, and an opportunity arose to take on an existing printing business and art gallery. “For many artists, getting work out there and seen is a tricky prospect,” James says, “but this venture presents an outlet for amateurs and professionals alike. We specialise in printing high quality greeting cards for artists and, with over 500 artists on our books, we see a huge range of styles and mediums which is what makes the job so enjoyable.” With a minimum print run of only 36, many artists choose to publish for themselves, especially at Christmas when a professionally printed card with their own work and personalised greeting makes all the difference. Working closely with artists through the digital capture, proofing stage, choice of papers, mount boarding options and even framing, Art2Card aim to give guidance through the whole project.

Typical of the work they do, Art2Card have recently produced a range of stunning prints of the Dorset coast by artist Susie Brooks. Created in her studio near Bath, Susie’s illustration and silkscreen work focusses on recording special places that she has visited. These are places with a special significance – places she loves.
"My work is a diary of the places that I have been in my life which are important to me,” says Susie who spent her childhood in Dorset. “I draw; make notes, sketch, and avidly collect postcards whenever I go away. Later, when I have a firm and edited memory of a place, I make a final pen and ink drawing. I then build up the background by laying down layers of colour using silkscreen inks before printing the final colour, the black pen and ink drawing. I always draw places with a happy association for me and that ensures that I always love working on them. Hopefully this is evident in the finished prints." From Susie’s work, Art2Card have printed ten greeting card designs on quality 350gsm silk card and there is also a range of fine art giclée prints in various sizes, with the larger prints being a limited edition of only 175. These can be supplied as a simple print, with a single or double mount, or framed in natural oak. Art2Card runs quietly alongside the Gallery on the Wey, in beautiful surroundings, nestled at the foot of Goulds Hill in the picturesque village of Upwey, next door to the popular Wishing Well Tearooms. From the gallery entrance, a drawbridge leads you through the tranquil water gardens to a listed wishing well and a natural spring that provides the source of the River Wey.

AIMING HIGH If you have ever thought of trying your hand at shooting a shotgun, take a look at On the Peg Tuition. At their North Dorset shooting ground, their experienced instructors will ensure you enjoy a great day’s shooting. On the Peg Tuition is run by Justin Frampton of Conyers in Blandford and whether you are male or female, young or old, they will be happy to teach you everything you need to know about this very addictive and fast-growing sport. At their training ground they have a range of automatic traps, allowing them to tailor the lesson to suit – if it’s a bogey competition, bird or a particular game shooting scenario they can simulate it. Enhancing this personal touch, they aim to provide a one-to-one service, with only the instructor and client on the ground. They are open throughout the year and conduct lessons for individuals as well as small groups. Gun hire is available and is included in the cost of the lesson, along with the cartridges and clays. As you can imagine, the most important aspect of shooting is safety, and Justin strongly recommends that you have a lesson if you are inexperienced, or have an instructor join you on a day’s shooting. Justin supplies a lot of instructors during the shooting season, joining clients on the peg, to look after one gun or rove the line. All their instructors are experienced game/clay shots and are able to assist clients at any level, whether you are a novice in need of instruction in all areas – from what to wear and the etiquette of the day – or an experienced gun who just needs help on that high bird. Also able to ensure that gun fit is correct, all instructors are experienced in double gunning – carrying different types of shotguns to suit the situation and client. Most important of all, On the Peg Tuition will ensure that you behave safely and in accordance with all of the shoot rules, as well as making sure that you enjoy your day to the full. Instructor’s vehicles are available for use on the day, by arrangement, and the instructors can also take care of your cartridge and clothing needs, with prior notice.

Agnes & Vera is a beautiful shop in Market Cross, the heart of the North Dorset market town of Sturminster Newton. The shop was named after family members of the previous owner, who established the business in 2007, but with its vintage green paintwork and red and white striped awning, the shop looks like it is happy to remain in an entirely different era. Sue Hepburn took over the business in 2009 and soon put her own stamp on this wonderful little shop. With a past dating back beyond the time of the Saxons, who used its elevated position to great advantage, it is no wonder that Shaftesbury is steeped in so much history.
Well known for Gold Hill, stunning views over the Blackmore Vale and the site of the long lost Abbey, Shaftesbury’s streets are full of ancient buildings, oozing charm, character and holding more than their fair share of secrets. As you wander through the town, it is easy to let your imagination transport you to the Shaftesbury of times past, to Thomas Hardy’s ‘Shaston’, with bustling streets and traders from neighbouring towns and villages assembling at the local market. The historic Grosvenor Arms boasts a beautiful façade with fine pillars and sash windows. This hides its true past from modern eyes as there has been an inn here since medieval times. Originally a timber-framed building, The Red Lion, as it was then, would have been a busy local landmark when it was purchased by the Grosvenor family and given their name in 1820.

Another coaching inn once stood on the site now called Swans Yard. After a variety of less glamorous uses, the site was re-developed in 1999 to offer a mix of homes and retail units. The result is a unique development, which offers a convenient link between Bell Street and Shaftesbury’s High Street. Despite consisting of modern buildings, this area still has great character due to the sympathetic use of local materials and the artisan nature of its shops, which include the aptly named Around the Corner and The Cygnet Gallery. This artisan presence has earned Swans Yard its reputation as the ‘Creative Heart of Shaftesbury’. In common with other historic towns, many of Shaftesbury’s buildings hint at their past through layers of subsequent alterations and it is this that gives it so much charm, offering a surprise around every corner, often accompanied by a breath-taking view. Shaftesbury has some beautiful shop fronts too, such as Bright Blooms, on the corner of Bell Street and Parsons Pool – so evocative of the golden age of retail, when the window display was everything. With the bony hand of Halloween preparing to knock, in the not-too-distant future, I can’t ignore some of Shaftesbury’s ‘darker’ characters. It is rumoured that a lone monk can sometimes be seen on Abbey Walk, beckoning passers-by to follow him into the gardens where the Abbey once stood. According to local legend, the monk was entrusted with the Abbey’s wealth, when Abbess Souche feared the worst from King Henry VIII’s commissioners. The monk buried the treasure but died before he could get word of its hiding place to Abbess Souche. It is thought that, to this day, he is still trying to let someone know where the treasure is located. A few have claimed to have followed the monk, who has also been spotted in a local cellar, but on each occasion the hooded figure has disappeared into thin air without divulging his secret. The Abbey was also the burial place of King Canute’s heart, which some say accounts for some of the more unusual happenings in the area. Other local sightings have included a woman known as the ‘Grey Lady’, thought to be the ghost of a 16th century nun, and a mischievous child. If you stay in Shaftesbury and you wake to find your bedclothes on the floor, it is said that this precocious child may be to blame! Shaftesbury is a popular destination, attracting many thousands of visitors each year. I like to think that one of the reasons for its popularity is that the town has many faces – even if some can only be seen out of the corner of your eye! Whether your favourite haunts in Shaftesbury are of the retail, natural or supernatural variety, be sure to pay this fascinating town another visit soon. N

Pork Pie in the Sky At the time Jon was working for a local book publishing company, having been a trade journalist for some 25 years. He decided to test out his pies on work colleagues by initiating a regular ‘Pork Pie Friday’. Then in April last year he set up his business, Jake’s Artisan Foods, making hand-cut, handmade pork pies on a part-time basis. Jon based Jake, his business avatar, on his own initials and the county, of course. He joined Hampshire Fare, signed up to Hampshire Farmers’ Markets and started targeting pubs nearby. But just six months later Jon found himself with two full-time jobs and a decision to make. Luckily the choice was easy, “I knew which I would rather be doing,” recalls Jon. Jon and his family live an idyllic lifestyle in an old cottage just outside Petersfield, with hens in the garden and a

visiting peacock, they’ve named Sid. Jon bought the property because it offered outbuilding space to convert into a bakery for the business. It has become that serious, that quickly and, every day, he can be found making pies or prepping meat – locally sourced shoulder of pork, naturally. Things have taken off so quickly that he is already investigating the possibility of taking on an apprentice. Jon believes that joining Hampshire Fare, the county food group, has helped him to grow his business. “I joined Hampshire Fare as soon as I set up the business as it provided the support and networking opportunities I needed,” he explains. “I’ve been involved with a few trade bodies in my life and this is by far the most useful; it is worth every penny. The leads are invaluable.”
As the name spreads, Jon’s pies are being stocked in some of the best venues in Hampshire, including the Old Vine in Winchester and Café W in Ringwood’s Waterstones. “James Durrant (chef/patron of The Plough, Longparish, Great British Menu winner, and another Hampshire Fare member) called me a few weeks back with regard to stocking my pork pies on his bar menu which is fantastic. That’s the sort of thing Hampshire Fare brings to the table.” Jon has also been out and about promoting his pies, attending a local food and shopping evening at Pinglestone Barn, the Taste of Hampshire Food Festival at Sparsholt College and the Vineyards of Hampshire Wine Festival among others. Looking ahead, Jon is confident that there is huge potential for his hand-cut pork pies as a premium brand. They’re the perfect picnic food, great for events and buffets, and work really well, served as an easy lunch or supper, accompanied by a glass of chilled wine or a local ale. Jon reports that even initially cynical Midlanders (Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire is traditionally the home of the pork pie, rather than Petersfield in Hampshire) have been impressed by the quality and taste when they’ve sampled Jon’s pies. But as Jon points out, Hampshire is becoming recognised as a source of quality food: “This is an amazing county. There’s no need to go over the Channel for great food – this is a great pork pie that can be associated with fine snacking, if not fine dining!”

A Arkadia pays a visit to Victoria Martin Jewellery… Q. What attracted you to jewellery making and what made you choose silver as your medium? A. I have always loved making things. When I started at art school, everything I made could be worn. It started with hats and body adornments but gradually progressed into wearable jewellery. I loved working in silver from the very first time I used it – it's lovely to saw and hammer. I used to be a lot more precious about it but now, before I make it into jewellery, I love to beat away at silver sheet with an old hammer until it looks really worn – as if it’s just been dug out of the ground.
Q. The beautiful pieces that you create often bear messages. How important is it for you to make jewellery that ‘speaks’ to its owner? A. Right now, the connection to the wearer and the meaning behind the gift are the most important things to me. It’s all about the sentiments involved and the pleasure and thoughts that the jewellery reminds you of when you wear it. It fills me with joy being a small part of these special moments when gifts are given.
Q. When you are looking to produce a new design, where does your inspiration come from? A. Mostly nature – the beauty that surrounds me – life in general. I also work without rules, so I let the metal go where it pleases. That way nothing is ever the same. As in nature, each piece is totally unique. I think that is what’s wonderful about anything that is handmade.
Q. Living and working in LA for two years must have been amazing. How do you think that experience influenced your work? A. My goodness that was a long time ago but, yes, it was a great experience. The unusual flora and fauna definitely intrigued me. Everything was very exotic and so different. I loved the Native American jewellery and found trips to Mexico, with all the wonderful colours and traditions, very inspiring. Working in my dad’s antique shop with beautiful old things around me has left me with a connection to and appreciation of old, worn, used and loved belongings. So, yes, all of these things still interest me – they are part of me and so affect my work. Q. Where do you display and sell your work? Calling All WAGS Your Country Needs You!
As a modern-day garden designer, I’m asked to create gardens of all shapes, sizes and styles. Recently completed projects include two new contemporary houses in Branksome Park, on the market for £2 million each; two Poundbury gardens, one for a retired single lady, another for a professional couple with property abroad; a Chiswick garden in-progress and predominantly for grandchildren; plus an on-going project in Broadmayne with rill, fire-pit and sculptured lawns in the style of Kim Wilkie. So, a wide spectrum of gardens, but they all have one thing in common – biodiversity! To some, biodiversity can be a bit of a yawn – fair enough, we all have our different interests. Mention football to me and I’ll be asleep before you can say Luis Suarez, but we need to listen-up folks, of that there is no doubt. We’re firmly in the 21st century with extraordinary technology available to us; you can blog and tweet to your heart’s content and immerse yourselves in techno hubs that buzz and hum around you, but, sooner or later you’ll need to come up for air. We human types need a green hub too, a different sort of buzz and hum that nourishes mind, body and spirit – in short, a green space, otherwise known as a garden. And size doesn’t matter! It can be anything from a balcony to a baronial country house. I design gardens with patches of nettles in one corner and a log pile complete with bee hotels in another. But, I also design sharp, cutting-edge contemporary gardens with minimal maintenance requirements and they’re all wildlife friendly, with biodiversity in mind. Designers are often heard to wax lyrical about space, balance, colour and movement – what lovelier colour and movement could you have, than birds, bees, butterflies and dragonflies? But if wildlife is not your bag, there are other reasons of simple, selfpreservation, to encourage you to think about its importance and if you call me, I will be more than happy to visit your garden and give a free consultation. On the self-preservation front, the increasing resistance of bugs to our current antibiotics is a problem with catastrophic potential and WAGS is a good place to start. No, it’s not a close affiliation with football and you don’t need to be a war veteran. WAGS is ‘Wild About Gardens’, a joint initiative between the RHS and The Wildlife Trusts, set up to encourage biodiversity in our gardens. I firmly believe if we look after the countryside and our wildlife, there’s a very good chance they will be instrumental in looking after us. With this in mind, the University of East Anglia is pioneering research into the natural antibiotics produced by leaf cutter ants who, because they use them in multiple drug combinations, have never become resistant. The clock is ticking for us humans; MRSA is a fact of life now, but what else may be lurking? Q&A ON LETTING YOUR PROPERTY
The Gas Safety check is due on my property, but my tenant keeps saying it is inconvenient, I intend to use my keys to let the gas engineer in, is this OK? NO, I am afraid it is not. The tenancy gives exclusive possession of the property to the tenant. The only way you may gain access is by the tenant agreeing. If the tenant refuses you are unable to enter the premises and you will need to apply to the courts for an injunction to gain access. Ensure all of your attempts to carry out the Gas Safety check are in writing as you may have to provide this evidence to the court. My Tenant is persistently late paying her rent. She is now 2 months in arrears, what can I do? In the first instance you must write to your tenant to inform them of the arrears. As the rental is now 2 months in arrears you are now in a position to serve a Section 8 Notice as she is in breach of her tenancy. The section 8 notice will inform the tenant that if the rental is not paid within the next 14 days it is your intention to start court proceedings under Grounds 8, 10 & 11 of the Housing Act 1988, to recover the outstanding rental and gain possession of your property. I served a section 21 notice on my tenant, the tenancy has now expired and she has not vacated. What do I do now? As your tenancy has now come to an end you will need to apply to the County Court under the Accelerated Possession Procedure. This procedure only applies to assured short hold tenancies which were entered into on or after 15th January 1989. You will need to supply a copy of the Section 21 notice together with a copy of the tenancy agreement. It is unusual for there to be a court hearing and provided all the paperwork is correct, a possession order will usually take immediate effect, unless the tenant has made a case for exceptional hardship which may delay the possession order.
