A Message from the President

Theatre friends and family.

For the past two years, I have been honored, challenged and enrichened serving as the president of the ariZoni Board of Directors. Theatre is by it’s nature, a collaborative art form. Thanks to the vision of many who came before, the ariZoni Theatre Association has begun to transition into an organization that advances the collaborative process within and between theatres in the valley theatre community. We will continue to move in this direction over the next few years and we hope you will continue to support and encourage us in our journey.

Speaking of collaborators, the people on the ariZoni Board are here because they care about you and this community. Each have shows to perform or direct, theatres to run, classes to teach, and every one of them gives many more hours than they can afford every year to celebrate and serve the theatre community in the valley. I am so grateful to each and every one of them:

Meribeth Reeves, whose drive and inspiration started our movement on this path when she was president, is one of the most level headed, knowledgeable and organized people I know. Her common sense saved us from more than one pie in the sky project dreamed up on the spur of the moment, (often by yours truly) and kept us on track toward long term goals and accomplishments.

Robyn McFarland was my sounding board more than once and although you may not know her, she is a member of the most important theatre groups around. She’s a teacher. She is also the person who always knew exactly what to say when I needed to hear it. She is awesome.

BJ Garrett is one of the smartest humans I know. His ideas and reasoned input as well as his passion for the theatre and his honest love for the art, make him invaluable to our community, anyone who has worked with him knows it. I also am very honored to consider him a friend.

Gil Benbrook who will try to edit down this letter to save program space, is the gorilla glue of the ariZoni Theatre Association. He holds us together and keeps us on track. Gil holds the board’s feet to the fire and keeps the communication with the community open and comprehensive. Gil spends literally hundreds of hours a year on ariZoni business.

Kandyce Hughes and I do not always agree on everything, we don’t always see the same path forward. And that is a damn good thing. Kandyce makes me and others think about things in ways they may not have before. And that is never a bad thing. She is also by far the most knowledgeable person I know when it comes to the ariZonis.

Chris Chávez came on the board last year and has been a enthusiastic and valuable collaborator in helping us create a plan moving forward. His passion for the art, his love of the community and his drive to see all members served, are valuable assets to the board. hope to work with him for years to come.

Bray Lawrence is a young man I did not know until he joined the board. I am quickly finding out that we were lucky indeed that he came to join us. A modern renaissance man, Bray brings a little of everything to the table, a passion for directing, acting, writing and service, he is quickly becoming an MVP.

Jessica Fishell just joined us this year. She doesn’t seem to like it when I tell people how intelligent she is, so I won’t mention it here. Suffice to say, she was bringing workable ideas and plans to the table from day one. She is starting to create a plan now to facilitate our communication with the community and find new ways to collaborate and create together online.

Every one of them deserves your praise, your admiration and, seriously, your help. Consider giving just 20-40 hours of your time this year to the theatre community, through the ariZoni Theatre Association.

President, 2022-2024
