ariZoni Theatre Awards of Excellence - 2022 Celebration Program

A Message from the President Dear Theater Friends:

Wow! Are we excited for this year’s celebration! This year we are ready to really celebrate a full year of incredible theatrical productions. We had close to 180 performances adjudicated this season with adjudicators traveling to theaters from Apache Junction to Surprise and from Maricopa to Cave Creek.

We have all learned a lot over the past two years and we continue to learn more and more each day about what this new almost-post Covid time will look like for performing arts organizations. At the Zonis we have learned a lot too. The past two years have given us the opportunity to really investigate what we are as an organization and to test out some new ideas—especially around this annual celebration. From our traditional event to a completely virtual event to an almost outdoor (if it hadn’t rained) party style event we have had the opportunity to experiment. This year’s celebration is a combination of many of the things we thought worked well in each of those options.

From 2020 we have incorporated a slideshow/video of the work of some of the nominated productions to allow everyone to see the amazing work these performers, artists and designers do.

From 2021 we are applying some of the tricks of the ceremony that helped shorten it to less than an hour last year (including reading two categories at once, nominee names on the screen and more). From 2019 we are re-incorporating the performances from shows nominated for Best Overall Production. We hope by implementing these elements we will have a show that showcases more nominated work as part of the celebration, runs close to 1.25 hours AND allows ample time after (or before as well for the Adult celebration) for partying with friends in the Atrium. ariZoni Theatre Awards of Excellence night is one of the best nights of the year because the whole theater community comes together—all dressed to the 9s and enjoys an evening celebrating all that makes Arizona Theater great.

As I step down at the end of the month from my tenure as ariZoni Board president I want to thank this incredible board who has been along on this ride with me. It is truly one of the most collaborative, thoughtful, caring and hard working groups I have been a part of since I started in the Zonis so many year ago. Richard, Gil, Robyn, BJ, Kandyce, Bray and Ilana. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for all the support. I cannot wait to see where this organization goes as it journeys down the road of becoming a true theater support organization.
