any of us will participate in the celebrations of Irish culture on Monday, March 17. And, yes we do advise at least wearing something green if you are looking for that extra lucky edge. Better yet, make sure you are wearing shamrocks!

What could be better than wearing a shamrock? Drowning one perhaps? If you are game, place a shamrock in your Guinness or Irish Whiskey, drink up (but don’t consume the shamrock), and then throw the clover over your LEFT shoulder while toasting Saint Patrick. Just be sure to clean up after yourself. A shamrock with three leaves symbolizes the Holy Trinity. A four-leafed clover (my grandmother used to find these all the time and give them to me) represents faith, hope, luck and love.

Other activities purported to bring luck your way on St. Patrick’s Day include: burn sage to cleanse all the negativity from your surroundings (be safe!), kiss someone of Irish descent, carry a cinnamon stick, eat Irish Soda Bread (made of four ingredients: flour, eggs, buttermilk, baking soda), and chant an Irish Blessing (May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields. etc.)

Also, our apologies to Hon-Dah Resort Casino & Conference Center as well as our readers and fans for incorrectly stating in the February 2025 issue their hotel has a fitness center at this time. Thank you to our loyal readers and fans. Thank you to our long-term sponsors who help to make running this magazine exciting and straightforward. As our business moves forward through its seventeenth year, we don’t forget.

PLAYERS TALK

A LONG LETTER ABOUT PROMOTIONS

Reader Issues Challenge To Casinos

Dear AZ Gaming Guide Editor: I read your magazine every month – have for years. I really enjoy Players Talk because you’re willing to print the letters from all the people who go to the casinos. Thank you for your candid answers back. Thanks to your writer Sami too. I can’t wait to read her column every month as well. I think your whole team truly understands us gamblers and how we all feel and why we do the things that we do. And, above all, why certain customer service issues at the casinos bother us.

A lot of gamblers aren’t happy with what is going on at the casinos anymore, but they still go anyway. Sometimes I feel the casinos must put something in the air, because we say one thing and do another when we get there. It’s like we leave our common sense at the door. Thank you for printing some of the new year’s resolutions in [the Feb., 2025 issue]. I agree with each and every one of the statements. I’m going to stay away from certain games too and my friends and I are no longer interested in going on giveaway days or drawing days, especially for a new car. This year will be different for me and for my friends and, so far, we have been sticking to our casino resolutions this year.

Since you always refer to reaching out to your “contacts” at the casinos for various things or that you’ve heard of something from your “contacts,” I have a challenge I want to offer you and your team. Casino employees don’t want to listen to us. We’re just idiot gamblers who don’t know anything anyway, right? How about you reach out to your “contacts” at the casinos and tell them this Stop with the presents! We all don’t want or need another robe, purse, toaster, bed set, luggage set, tool set or any other gift for that matter. Yes, I know that the casinos continue to do these giveaways because they “work” or they would have stopped a long time ago. The problem is people are tempted to go pick something up because it’s supposedly “free.” The casino is giving away a present. There is another reason, and this is what the casinos don’t understand, is WHY the customers are going to pick up this gift. They feel that they “earned” the present and they already give them so much money that, God Forbid, they leave that on the table too! They are not excited to go pick up that toaster for the tenth time. TRUST ME! They are going to the casino to get what they believe is rightfully theirs – begrudgingly. The casino’s intent for the giveaways is twofold, at least in my opinion. It’s first – to bring people to the casino and second – to make players happy by giving them a gift they can get excited about and tell all their friends and family.

First, I know for a fact that many of us have stopped falling for that trick. We don’t go as often as we used to for the gifts. We don’t have anymore room to store 20 different sized pans and 20 bed sheets and 20 luggage sets! I mean, the casinos do know that they’re all giving away the same gifts, right? Second, has a casino manager ever sat in their parking lot during a gift giveaway day? Well, I have waiting for my friends. Nobody looks happy walking away with their little crockpot in their hands. Sit in the parking lot of a mall and then take a look at the expressions of the people walking out with bags of items they actually want. Very different. These gift giveaways are not doing anything for their business or their customers’ attitudes about their casino. If anything, it leaves an even worse taste in their mouths. They’re making them feel stupid and pissed off, either way, if they go or they don’t go. These presents are not a perk anymore. Besides that, how do you think it makes me feel to go pick up a pan that all my other friends also got when I know I spend 10X more in one trip than most of my other friends. And, my one friend who spends the most of all of us also gets the same pan! What about the casinos that tell you to earn 150 points and then pick up your free gift? So, make 150 points, stop playing and go home. LOL.

Here's my challenge to your “contacts” at the casinos: Why don’t you be the first casino to stop doing these stupid presents?! You know that all gamblers really want is free play! Just focus on that and stop wasting your time and ours with the useless gifts. Offer a promotion for just free play and that’s it. The more you play, the more you get back in free play in any given 24-hour period. Done. Plain and simple. All casinos have a different point structure. Some you have to spend $1 for 1 point, some $4 for 1 point, some $5 for 1 point. Assuming that it takes $1 to earn 1 point, then if I earn 1,000 points why not just give me back $10 in free play? I have to play through $1,000, right? I would think that’s fair. If I make 5,000 points in one day I get $50 back. Tempt me with hurdles that are even more enticing and really make it interesting for me. Doesn’t that just give me yet another reason to stay and keep playing and not just come pick up my mixer and leave? You do want gamblers in the chairs playing, don’t you? Or, do you want to fill up your casino with a bunch of non-gamblers with one free entry into a drawing for a car standing around hoping their name is called? $

TABLE GAMES

THE SCOOP ON SLOT MACHINES

Observations

After Decades

Of Casino Visits & Work Experience

Idon’t usually write about slot machines because other writers have already contributed excellent advice, but it’s a new year. So, here are a few things to consider as you saddle up for a ride on your favorite machines.

PACE YOURSELF – IT’S A LONG RIDE

Table game players tend to wander the casino a bit before choosing a blackjack table based on the table limit, the number of players, the dealer, and even the bosses in the pit. They go where they want. Slot players have the same option.

However, they often prefer specific games which may be limited and get roped into playing for longer periods of time because they don’t want to give up their machine. I suggest the opposite.

Instead of a marathon, consider sprints, where you find a game and play only a set period, win or lose. Then, take a lap or two around the casino, get the blood flowing, and even consider a bite to eat. Only then should you return to your favorite machine, which will probably still be available!

SLOTS ARE DESIGNED TO BE ADDICTIVE

Yes, slot machines are designed to be addictive, just as blackjack dealers are taught to be friendly and welcome players to their tables. It’s a big reason we play. However, the slots are a bit more sinister.

You’ll get more bets per hour at slots as a solitary game than at the tables, so you’ll experience longer ups and downs. Playing games with large jackpots pay fewer small ones, so you’ll probably have longer down streaks. The machines are designed to offer plenty of “near misses,” each of which makes you think you are getting closer to hitting the big one. You’re not.

Like sound bites, those close calls generate increased hunger to keep playing. Rapid play stimulates brain activity at a highly accelerated rate compared to table games. We like it, so we keep playing!

THERE ARE NO GUARANTEED WINNING SYSTEMS FOR SLOT MACHINES

I still get asked regularly if there are any winning slot systems. The answer is no. I have one for staying even, but you probably want to keep playing, so we’ll skip that.

Instead, choose a slot you enjoy and read the rules carefully. If you play a multi-screen bonus round game, ensure you are betting enough lines and credits to trigger the payout bonus or screen you want.

DO CASINOS TIGHTEN UP THE MACHINES FOR THE HOLIDAYS?

That’s another tale that never seems to go away. Yes, games have different payout schedules, and yes, they can be changed. Computers and their chips! However, Arizona casinos put machines on their casino floor based on what players like. Spreadsheets tell them everything they need to know so, occasionally, machines are relegated to dark corners.

However, slot departments hate to move games. It’s disruptive and costs a loss of play. And no, the game odds are not changed for holiday crowds.

WHY DO SLOT MACHINES GO HOT AND COLD?

Slots don’t get cold – it’s psychology. Every spin on the machine is independent and chosen by a random number generator. There is no evil genie choosing your fate. Nobody has control over hot and cold stretches. Changing machines may or may not change things, but taking a break is never wrong. $

FORGET BASIC STRATEGY

Just Memorize This Short Chart

Ihave been playing blackjack in Arizona since it became legal around 2003. In all my years of playing, I have seen probably ten players who played Basic Strategy perfectly. However, there always seems to be that one guy at the table who thinks he is an expert trying to tell the other players how to play their hand. The truth is this guy seldom knows basic strategy himself perfectly. In fact, I have had people like this try to correct my play when I am counting cards. I just smile. This is usually the same idiot that tells players that the object of the game of blackjack is to get as close to 21 without going over. Wrong! The object of the game is to beat the dealer.

If you look at a basic strategy chart, there are around 250 plays that you need to memorize to play it perfectly. To most players, this is probably overwhelming. I don't think most individuals are willing to put in that much time on a game they play once in a while. In light of this, I am going to give you the charts for a very simple strategy. Instead of memorizing 250 plays you only have to learn 21.

This strategy is not correct 100% of the time, and you will give the casino an additional 0.14% advantage by playing it. However, the cost of your imperfect play will amount to about one hand for every twelve hours of play, which for the recreational player is very small.

On the chart you will see "Hard 4 to 8" as the first entry. A hand is called “hard” if it is made up of cards that have no Aces, or Aces that count as 1 point or the hand would bust. So if you have a "hard" 4 to 8 according to the chart you would hit the hand if the dealer has a 2-6 or 7-Ace showing.

A "Soft" hand is one that has an Ace that can be counted as 1 or 11 points. For example, a 6 and an Ace would be called a soft 17 because the Ace could be counted as a 1 or an 11. The player would actually have a 7 or a 17.

If you have a "hard" 9 the chart tells you to Double Down if the dealer has a 2-6 showing, and to hit if the dealer up card is a 7Ace.

"Double Down" means that a player can push out an additional bet equal to or less than their original bet, however you only get one more card.

PLAYER’S HAND DEALER’S UP CARD

HARD

4 to 8

10 or 11

2 TO 6 7 TO A

Don’t Split

Don’t Split

PLUS: Surrender a 16 against a 10. Hit if you can’t Double. Stand on a soft 18 if you can’t Double. Never take Insurance.

Standing on a hand means to wave the dealer off. So on the chart you see 12-16 tells you to stand on the hand if the dealer is showing a 2-6 as an up card.

You will notice at the bottom of the chart it says “Splits.” A "Split" is if the player has a pair, or any two 10-point cards, then the player may push an equal amount of the original bet out and split the hand into two separate hands. The dealer will then give the first hand an additional card and the player can stand, hit, double, or split again if another pair appears. The player may re-split up to four times. If you are dealt a pair of Aces you may split them, however you only get one card on each.

Also in the "Splits” section you will notice instructions to not split a hand. Just play it as though you don't have a pair.

Hopefully this simple strategy will entice some players into playing the game. After all, Blackjack has the best player odds in the casino. $

DIVORCE FILINGS HIGHEST EVER

But Counselor’s New Book Can Keep Couples From Becoming A Statistic

Couples who made it through the holidays without any conflicts can consider themselves lucky, because the Doyle Law Group reports that “the week of January 12 through 16 has the highest rate of divorce filings annually. Each New Year brings a one-third increase in divorce filings.”

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

"You've made it through the holidays, so now is the time to take an inventory on your home life and to work on your marriage," said Ziba Graham Jr., a licensed clinical social worker who has helped hundreds of couples improve the quality of their marriages.

His new book, Fix Your Marriage Without Counseling: A Practical Method Men Will Appreciate, offers proven strategies to strengthen any couple’s relationship whether they’re in need of a minor tweak or a major overhaul.

When asked why he wrote the book, Graham said, “I want to strengthen marriages and reduce the number of divorces that are destroying families. Through years of counseling couples, I have developed a method that not only transforms marriages but also works without even seeing a counselor.”

Those who have any inkling that their marriage might soon end up as a New Year's divorce statistic can take charge of their marriages in the privacy of their own homes using Graham’s step-by-step approach.

"Before you resort to counseling, give this book a try to make your marriage easier and more enjoyable,” Graham added. “Do it for your kids!"

In a Midwest Book Review, Mary Cowper said, “Fix Your Marriage Without Counseling: A Practical Method Men Will Appreciate is a thoroughly 'reader/user' friendly resource for husbands and

wives wanting 'real world practical' DIY solutions to the problems arising in the marriages, without the necessity of a thirdperson arbitrator, counselor, or therapist.

Insightful and thought-provoking, Fix Your Marriage Without Counseling from Wheatmark is especially and unreservedly recommended for personal, professional, community, and college/ university library Marriage Counseling collections and supplemental curriculum studies lists.”

ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF GAMING PSA:

Tips for Safe and Responsible Online Gaming

The Arizona Department of Gaming (“ADG”) urges residents to exercise caution when engaging in online gaming activities. With advertisements for online casinos and gaming platforms proliferating on social media, scammers are targeting unsuspecting individuals to steal personal information and financial assets. By staying vigilant and informed, Arizonans can better protect themselves from fraud and identity theft.

Illegal online casinos and sweepstakes platforms present themselves as legitimate platforms, aiming to exploit players by offering illegitimate or illegal gaming services. However, many of these operations are not legal or regulated, leaving users vulnerable to fraud, identity theft, and other serious risks. Due to their unregulated nature, ADG is unable to resolve complaints and disputes arising from unregulated and illegal gaming sites, leaving victims with little to no chance of recovering lost funds. In light of these developments, the ADG urges residents to verify the legitimacy of any online gaming platform before engaging in play.

Sweepstakes In AZ: Only certain games styled as “free-to-play” are legal in Arizona. Some, instead, promote illegal gambling. “Free-to-play” games or contests, sometimes referred to as “sweepstakes” (which is not a term defined in Arizona law), seek to remove a participant’s act of risking or giving something of value for the opportunity to obtain a benefit from the game or contest.

The ADG has published new guidance that may help you understand requirements for games or contests styled as “free-toplay” or “sweepstakes” to avoid the prohibition on illegal gambling. Please note, ADG recommends that you obtain independent legal advice to ensure compliance with the law. You can find more information regarding the legality of these styles of games by viewing Arizona Revised Statutes §13-3301 et seq. or visiting our website: gaming.az.gov/resources/sweepstakes.

Dangers Of Illegal Online Casinos & Sweepstakes: Fraudulent online casinos and illegal sweepstakes often mimic reputable platforms, using familiar branding, flashy advertisements, and enticing promotions to lure victims. These unregulated operations leave participants vulnerable to:

● Financial loss through fake gaming platforms or fraudulent prize fees.

● Identity theft resulting from shared personal or financial in-

formation.

● False claims of unpaid taxes or fees tied to sweepstakes "winnings."

How To Protect Yourself:

● Check before you bet: verify the licensed and regulated casinos and operators in Arizona.

● Be skeptical of advertisements or promotions on social media promising guaranteed wins or no-risk gaming.

● Avoid sharing personal or financial information with unverified sources.

● Look for sites that include resources for dispute resolution, as well as self-exclusion, responsible gaming messaging, or a tollfree helpline number.

Know the Legal Operators in Arizona Legal, regulated operations provide important consumer protections not found in the illegal market, helping ensure a safer experience for participants. A list of all licensed and regulated casinos, event wagering, and fantasy sports operators legally taking bets in Arizona can be found on the Department’s website at gaming.az.gov. Just because you can download the app, visit the website, and play the games, does not mean it is a legitimate and legal gaming platform.

What To Do If You Encounter Fraud Or Identity Theft: If you believe you or someone you know has been targeted by a fraudulent online casino or sweepstakes, file a consumer complaint by visiting azag.gov/consumer. You can also contact the Arizona Attorney General’s Office by phone (Phoenix: 1-602-542-5763, Tucson: 1-520-628-6648, or Statewide: 1-800-352-8431).

If you suspect identity theft, report it to the Federal Trade Commission: for help in English, go to IdentityTheft.gov and for help in Spanish, go to RobodeIdentidad.gov.

ADG takes complaints about illegal gambling seriously. To report suspected illegal gambling activity, visit our website at gaming.az.gov/about/contact-us, call 1-602-255-3886, or email publicaffairs@azgaming.gov. You can remain anonymous. $

About ADG: Established by the Arizona State Legislature in 1995, ADG is the state regulatory agency for tribal gaming, event wagering & fantasy sports contests, racing and pari-mutuel/simulcast wagering, and unarmed combat sports. ADG also provides and supports education, prevention, and treatment programs for people and families affected by problem gambling through its Division of Problem Gambling and 24-hour confidential helpline, 1-800-NEXT STEP.

CASINO DINING

DELICIOUS MENU ITEMS AT BLUEWATER

Amazing Food At INCREDIBLE Prices. Your Taste Buds Will Thank You.

Here in Arizona, we’re so lucky to have myriad casino gaming options to choose from. With most of the casinos just a couple hours’ drive from the Phoenix Valley, it’s a wonderful day trip that feels like a small vacation.

Recently, my team and I made a trip West and spent the entire day at BlueWater Resort Casino in Parker, Arizona. And, luckily, we arrived ravenous so the first item of business was to head straight to the deli! I say “luckily” because I truly believe that’s where my luck started and it just continued from there. I’m a hamburger and fries’ kind of gal, so there was no deliberation on my end. My order was swift and the reply back from the young lady working the counter just as quick, “That will be $4.”

At first, I thought she surely meant $14. The conversation that ensued between the two of us was rather amusing as I recall back to the situation

Me: Did you say $14?

Her: No $4.

Me: I’d like fries with that hamburger as well, please. Her: It comes with fries.

Me: For $4 total?

Her: Yes.

Me: With the fries?!

Her: Yes. A cheeseburger is $1 more.

Me: So, $5 total for a cheeseburger and fries?!

Her: Yes.

All four of us glanced at each other in surprise and then, as if on cue, looked up at the menu simultaneously for what other “deals” were offered. All of the food items were amazingly inexpensive! And, I have to say, my burger was absolutely delicious and the French fries were crisp and cooked to perfection. My team members couldn’t stop raving about the pizza as well, that cost them only a few dollars!

For dinner we treated ourselves to an absolutely mouthwatering steak at the BlueWater Grille. This incredibly tender 8 ounce New York Strip Steak was served with sauteed mushrooms and onions with a choice of two sides (rice pilaf, vegetable medley, mashed potatoes or French fries). All for just $16! The extraordinary quality of the food, at such affordable prices, and the friendliness of all the staff, was just a really nice sur-

prise and an overall pleasant experience.

BlueWater Resort Casino has a really great selection of slots to choose from which include all the newest titles from a variety of slot manufacturers. I played several machines and walked away up or even from all of them! I had some astounding luck on Aristocrat’s Super Bowl Link and Buffalo Ultimate Stampede as well Ultra Rush Gold by Incredible Technologies.

Just one word of advice … always make sure to pack an overnight bag for any day excursion to an out-of-town casino! When luck comes your way, you’ll want to ride that wave. I was a little disappointed that the day had come to an end. Good luck and have an awesome time during your next visit to BlueWater Resort Casino. $

RITUALS SPORTS FANS SWEAR BY

Obviously, Gamblers Aren’t The Only Superstitious Bunch!

With March Madness at full steam and the Super Bowl a mere memory, albeit a sweet or sour one, I could not help but write about superstitions in this month’s article. Especially after watching the Big Game and realizing all the interesting rituals performed by not only the athletes but the fans as well.

Doing research for an article I wrote a while back, I discovered some peculiar rituals that various famous athletes performed to increase their chances of winning. For example, Bjorn Borg prepared for Wimbledon every year by not shaving and wearing the same shirt every single year. His rituals have been copied by many other athletes and even by entire teams; traditions that are still implemented to this day. MLB’s Wade Boggs had to eat chicken before every game. Now that’s a lot of chicken dinners! Tennis’ Serena Williams always tied her shoelaces in a certain way, bounced the ball 5 times before every first serve and twice before every second serve and wore the same socks during a tournament. Most NASCAR drivers and their racing teams have a strong aversion to the shells of peanuts, green cars and $50 bills, believing them all to be unlucky.

Sports fans, like their revered athletes, have their own traditions and superstitions they hold just as dear to their hearts as they do the games. Almost all fans believe wearing particular items of clothing, such as team jerseys and caps, will bring good fortune to their team. Some fans believe sitting in the exact same spot, whether it’s on the couch or in a sports bar, is the secret to the success of their team. Even eating certain foods (down to the particular order) and sipping specific beverages will influence game results. However, dreading any bad luck, some fans even avoid eating certain foods that might cause indigestion. For some fans, it’s even about avoiding specific events during a game such as not getting up, moving positions or using the restroom at a pivotal time during the game. While others may intentionally move to another location or just stand up to “reset” the game if there was a bad play or a mistake. Lastly, some fervent sports fans will absolutely not discuss game results, even in a positive light, until the game is over fearing they might jinx their team.

I’m as superstitious as they come. My favorite colors to wear to the casino are green, black and red (in that order). Those colors make me feel lucky. Gambling on a Friday the 13th gets me just as excited as gambling on any other holidays I’ve deemed lucky, such as my birthday. I always wear my silver pendant

and silver hoop earrings, as they have been worn during some

If you too have your own superstitions and rituals associated with your casino visits, you can rest assured us gamblers aren’t the only ones. Furthermore, good for you! Remember the famous quote by Stanley Kowalski in “A Streetcar Named Desire?” “You know what luck is? Luck is believing you’re lucky, that’s all. To hold a front position in this rat-race, you’ve got to believe you’re lucky.” Luck comes to those who are ready to receive it. Fortunate events are more likely to happen to people who are prepared and actively seeking them out.

On the other hand, if you aren’t accustomed to utilizing certain habits before or during your casino excursions, what’s the harm in trying some of the suggestions above? Next time lady luck smiles upon you at the casino, make a mental note of the circumstances. What game were you playing and on what day/ time? What items of clothing were you wearing and what were their colors? What about the accessories – jewelry, watch, purse, wallet, hat? Did you eat a particular meal that day? Were you with (or without) certain people? I’ve had many people tell me their spouses are their good luck charms and I’ve had just as many tell me they never win when they’re around. And, most importantly, try and identify the mood you were in before your big win. What I’ve come to realize in all the years I’ve been in the gaming industry (both personally and professionally) is the people that are winning are usually the people who are most relaxed and having fun. That’s what it’s all about.

If you have something to say about an experience at an Arizona casino, please let me know! Have Fun & Win Big! $
