REBIRTH & ATTITUDE

Aligning Yourself With Spring’s Message

Spring, a season synonymous with rebirth and renewal, brings with it a sense of invigorating freshness and an opportunity to start anew. The blooming flowers and the gradual warming of the earth symbolize a period of natural rejuvenation, reminding us that after every winter, there comes a spring. This cyclical renewal is not just confined to nature but also extends to our lives, urging us to embrace change and growth with a positive mindset.

The importance of maintaining a positive and focused mental attitude during this period of renewal cannot be overstated. Just as plants need sunlight and water to grow, our ambitions and dreams require the nourishment of optimism and determination. A positive attitude helps us to see opportunities where others see obstacles, to remain resilient in the face of challenges, and to persevere when the going gets tough. This mental fortitude is the foundation upon which success is built.

Luck and fortune are often seen as external forces that are beyond our control, but a positive attitude can attract these seemingly elusive elements into our lives. By focusing on our goals and maintaining a hopeful outlook, we are more likely to recognize and seize opportunities that come our way. This proactive approach, combined with hard work and perseverance, can create a ripple effect that draws success and prosperity towards us.

In the realm of money and success, a positive mental attitude is equally crucial. Winning regularly at the casino requires not only strategic planning and effort but also the belief in our ability to succeed. A focused and optimistic mindset empowers us to take calculated risks, to innovate, and to persistently pursue our objectives. As spring heralds a time of growth and renewal, let us harness its energy to cultivate a mindset that is geared towards achieving our dreams and aspirations.

Have Fun & Good Luck!

PLAYERS TALK

BANKROLL BLUES

Higher Volatility Games Mean Larger Bankrolls & Less Time On Device

Q: Why does my bankroll get eaten up faster than years ago? I can remember $100 lasting me hours at the casino ten years ago. Now $500 isn’t enough for an afternoon of fun. I’m lucky to get 30 minutes out of my bankroll. Please tell me how this is possible.

A: Hi James! Great question! My bankroll can get obliterated quickly too! Way faster than it used to, for sure. At least there is some consolation that we are all in the same boat.

There’s two major factors contributing to the punches our bankrolls are absorbing at the casinos. First, games are way more volatile than they used to be. Now, what exactly is volatility when it comes to slots?

Putting it simply, volatility is a measure as to how often and how large of a pay a winning spin is compared to the average outcome of a spin (which these days is near zero). Most of us understand volatility in terms of the stock market and that’s a decent, if not entirely accurate, analogy.

I think all of us recognize the volatility associated with taking all our assets and buying an individual stock as opposed to taking our assets and buying multiple stocks, investing in bonds, buying a CD, and depositing the rest into mutual funds. That’s frequently referred to a “balanced” portfolio rather than just relying on the performance of one public company. A “balanced” portfolio will, most likely, have far lower volatility than only investing in, for example, one pizza chain.

But this isn’t a publicly traded pizza company, it’s a slot. So, back to my point. Modern slots have more wins “locked away” for lack of a better word, and way more losing spins! The “dribbler” slots of the early 2000s are extinct or, if they exist, are “dribblers” on a grander scale. Back then, you could expect an initial stake of $50 at a 45 cent wager to “dribble” you between $100 and $0 all afternoon. Now, $500 at a $1 wager MAY “dribble” you between $1,000 and $0 all afternoon long. However, what used to be a dry spell of three losing spins back in the 2000s is now a drought of 50 losing spins until you hit a winner for $200 (let’s say) which MAY let you ride out the next drought! I’m hoping this is starting to paint a picture for you.

Furthermore, the minimum wagers have increased! The highest generally accepted minimum for a penny slot is now 100 credits. Soon, I’m sure, we can expect minimums above that. One of the

first ways will certainly be with the reintroduction of the “Extra Bet” which was a very popular feature 20 years ago. Remember when the maximum number of lines was, gasp, twenty? And then, if players wanted to activate the bonus features, they would have to pony up the extra five credits to be eligible to enjoy the bonus.

Now, there is no Extra Bet just a minimum which is either higher than the number of played lines or, in the case of a scatter-all math model (like Buffalo), way over the original cost of the game. The original Buffalo math model (scatter-all) cost 40 credits at minimum bet. Now most Buffalo games are much higher for their minimum bet.

And please understand, I’m not picking on Buffalo! Many slots from all the different manufacturers have this design! By the way, I love Buffalo the original and some of the new versions.

So, with higher minimum bets, your $100 on a slot won’t last as long. What used to be a 25 cent wager is now 75 cents. That’s three times LESS spins on average, all other things being equal. But, as I explained earlier, all other things are NOT equal!

Even those of you who used to play nine lines on nickel slots (a 45 cent wager) are hard-pressed to find a new slot which allows you to bet 45 credits at the minimum bet. Again, you are lucky to find a 50 credit minimum wager.

Moving forward, don’t be surprised to see slots with minimum bets of 50, 75, 88, 100 credits but wagers beyond 100 credits if you want to activate all the bonuses. I’m not talking about a slot with a minimum bet of 100 credits and you have to bet at least 300 credits to win the progressives in the bonus game. I mean, in order to qualify for the bonus game you have to bet more than the minimum!

In any event, spend some time looking for “dribblers” and older games with lower minimum bets. Yes those older games might not have the glitz, the large screens and the multiple bonuses, but you have to decide what you want your player experience to be high risk with a shot at high rewards or less risk and more time on device? $

GREAT GAMES Ready For Play

Fresh from the factory floors of Aristocrat Gaming, this brand new slot has flown and landed on casino floors in Arizona. More installs are surely on their way. We encourage you to ask for this game at your favorite casino and mention you read about the slot in the Arizona Gaming Guide!! $

GREAT GAMES Ready For Play

Gold Fish Respin Party

arrah’s Ak-Chin Casino in Maricopa, Arizona is the place for brand new slots! More and more and more games are being installed, certified, and let loose for us casino enthusiasts to try our luck on. The casino has over 1,100 slots for patrons to enjoy so there’s plenty for everyone.

One new slot we’ve had fun playing recently is Light & Wonder’s Gold Fish Respin Party. This game is Hold & Spin meets Gold Fish for a new gaming experience. There’s two versions, Diver (the blue version below) and Pearl (the purple version to the left). Both Diver and Pearl slots offer the Gold Fish Bonus, but Diver features Shark and Jellyfish bonuses, while Pearl has Seahorse and Pufferfish as bonuses.

But does that really matter? Afterall, we want all three bonuses at the same time! From our perspective in having played the Pearl version several times, you really want the Gold Fish bonus, then the Seahorse bonus, and lastly the Pufferfish bonus. Looking at the help screen confirms why. All three provide the familiar Hold & Spin mechanic with a few twists as to how your overall bonus values can increase featuring the lovable and entertaining animations in the underwater world of Gold Fish Respin Party. If the purple Pearl version isn’t your style, try the blue Diver version, with the Shark and Jellyfish characters.

Just an FYI the help screen clearly states: “The appearance of fish and bowls over time has no effect on triggering a Bonus.” So, think what you want. Just because one of the characters has grown to the point where the bowl can no longer contain it doesn’t mean the bonus is “due” regardless of what you have experienced at the casino or may have heard on YouTube or other social media platforms. Sorry! $

BEHIND THE SCENES OF ARIZONA CASINOS

Plus An Update On W2G Limits

Humans have been gambling for survival in North America since they first tried fighting the saber-tooth tigers about 15,000 years ago. There were no casinos back then, and the only comps you got were the food you fought for. If you won, you lived.

When a more civilized form of gambling arrived in Arizona, it was still dangerous. One hundred and fifty years ago in Tombstone, the Earps, Clantons, and Doc Holliday fought to the death at the O.K. Corral about guns, stolen horses, pride, and gambling debt from Wyatt Earp and his brother’s saloons, which offered roulette, blackjack, and poker.

Arizona’s modern casinos, which exist due to the long, hard work of several Native American Tribes, are very safe. The 22 federally recognized tribes in Arizona have a Gaming Compact with the State of Arizona, with oversight from the Arizona Department of Gaming.

Digging deeper, Arizona has casinos because Congress established the National Indian Gaming Commission as a United States federal regulatory agency within the Department of the Interior pursuant to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988.

We’re all happy about that because we can play slots or poker without taking a long drive to Vegas while avoiding crowds, parking fees, and seriously high meal costs.

Congressional Gaming Caucus

While discussing the fun our Arizona casinos offer, I’d like to add that several Arizona representatives in Congress support local casinos. The Congressional Gaming Caucus is a Congressional Member Organization within the United States House of Representatives.

As of the 116th US Congress, the Congressional Gaming Caucus was represented by 33 members, including Paul Gosar, from Arizona’s 4th District, Ruben Gallego, from Arizona’s 7th District, and Tom O’Halleran from Arizona’s 1st District.

Most recently, the gaming caucus and sponsors Dina Titus (DNV) and Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA) introduced the Slot Act legislation, HR 3125, which would raise the minimum reporting requirement for jackpots from $1,200 to $5,000.

The change would reduce paperwork, slot personnel workload, and increase player time on the device because your slot machine wouldn’t get locked up for what always seems longer than we would like. I hope the bill will be reintroduced and passed.

Paperwork That Can Make Or Break The IRS

Of course, the IRS wants to ensure they get a shot at some of our hard-fought gaming wins, but the $1,200 threshold is antiquated. In fact, the amount hasn’t changed for going-on fifty years. And 400% inflation since it went into effect puts the original intended dollar value at about $5,000. Surely, the IRS would like to reduce the flood of paperwork that small jackpot rates produce.

New Slot Machine Jackpots

It seems that reducing mandatory IRS paperwork for a higher threshold would benefit everyone, especially as new machines with higher payoffs continue to dominate the industry.

Huge video presentation machines are wildly popular, and virtually all machines offer special features and bonus screens. Players love getting to the bonus screens, but there seems to be a lean toward free spins that make everyone smile, like 100 freebies on Heidi’s Bier Haus

Whether you’ve found Dragon Link, Rakin’ Bacon, Kong: Skull Island, or are sticking with tried-and-true favorites like Buffalo or 88 Fortunes, avoiding paperwork at $1,200 would probably keep you happy too. Hopefully, change will come soon! $

TABLE GAMES

Do Other Players Determine Your Outcome?

Taking A Deep Dive To Find

The Answer

While you will always remember the player who hit their sixteen against the dealer’s four and took the bust card that cost you your hand, you tend to forget when an uninformed player actually caused you to win!

First of all, let me debunk the myth that the actions of the other players at a table determine whether you are going to win or lose. Blackjack players that subscribe to this theory usually play marginal basic strategy, at best. After a hand is over, there will always be at least one player who feels the need to point out any incorrect plays and the ramifications to the other players at the table. In addition, there’s also always a know-it-all who wants to take credit for everyone winning their hands because he or she was the one who took the dealer’s five that would have resulted in a twenty-one.

The truth is you tend to remember the foolish player who took the dealer’s bust card that caused everyone to lose and forget when a ridiculous play caused you to win. In the long run, the way the other players play their hands has no effect on your long term results. They help you just as much as they hurt you, so it all balances out.

If you are new to the game of Blackjack, a full table can be helpful because it slows the game down and gives you more time to make the correct play for your given hand. Typically, you will play about 50 to 60 hands per hour at a full table. So, if you are playing perfect basic strategy, this means that you will lose less money per hour at a full table since the casino has a long-term advantage over you.

If you are not playing perfect basic strategy when you play Blackjack, you are giving more of your money away. For example, if you stand on twelve against a dealer’s up card of two, you will lose 29.3% of all the money you bet in that situation. If your average bet is $10, it costs you $2.93 to stand. By hitting, you reduce your loss by $.40 or $2.53 per hand.

If you play just four hours a week, the amount you donate in this situation may surprise you. Over a year’s time, you will play about 12,000 hands, and you will see twelve versus a two about seventy-five times. Standing instead of hitting your twelve versus a dealer’s up card of two over a year’s time adds up to $30 a year. Do you really want to give your favorite casino $30 more a year? Do you think they need an extra $30? If you're

on 12 vs. 3

with A-7 vs. 9

11 vs. 10

Stand A-7 vs. 3,4,5,6

Stand A-6 vs. 7

Double 9 vs. 7 Hit $19.44

Stand 16 vs. 7 Hit $37.00 Stand 16 vs. 10 Hit $12.09

scared of busting or "taking the dealer's bust card,” you're giving the casino a gift each and every time you stand!

This is only one example of what it costs you to misplay a hand. Each time that you deviate from basic strategy you are giving more of your money to the casino. How much? The chart above identifies the amount players give to the casino by misplaying a hand. This chart is based on four hours of play per week and an average bet size of $10 per hand.

Keep in mind that this is only a partial list of misplayed hands. Can you imagine the amount that is needlessly given away by a "hunch" player? These are also the players that complain that they never win and don't know why. Well, hopefully, now they know! $

It is also home to a cultural center featuring art from members of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, ensuring that guests are exposed to the Community’s deep cultural roots.

Looking To The Future

As Talking Stick Resort celebrates 15 years of being at the forefront of gaming and entertainment in the Valley, its leadership remains focused on the future. In recent years the property has unveiled new amenities and renovations to lay the foundation for its continued success. Among the enhancements made to the property include a new luxurious pool area with two pools, permanent casitas with 12 individual plunge pools, a hot tub, family-friendly splash pad and a full bar.

Talking Stick Resort also introduced the newly renovated Arena Poker Room. The largest poker room in Arizona, it has grown from 59 tables to 68 with 130 led screens covering the entire room. Covering walls and pillars, the screens can show up to 30 sporting events at once.

Also renovated and reimaged is the property’s Showroom. The ultimate fusion of entertainment and technology, the new space is both intimate and state-of-the-art. It features massive LED video walls, a crystal-clear L-Acoustics sound system and 4K cameras to show all the action on stage for concerts and special events.

These expansions, along with the Enterprise’s renewed focus on player development as demonstrated with the launch of a new players club, Salt River Rewards are all part of Talking Stick Resort’s long-term strategy. ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF GAMING PSA:

Be Cautious This Tax Season And Avoid Being Scammed!

The Arizona Department of Gaming (“ADG”) has received inquiries from patrons seeking to verify the legitimacy of companies that are issuing tax forms for gambling winnings. As a result, the ADG wants to take this opportunity to remind Arizonans to be cautious this tax season and to thoroughly review and investigate any requests from anyone purporting to be the Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”).

The ADG would like to remind Arizonans that if they participate in casino gambling, parimutuel/simulcast wagering, event wagering, and/or fantasy sports, they may receive a W-2G or 1099-MISC form for their winnings. It is important to be aware that the gambling institution that you choose to participate in gaming activities with will be the payor, and the payor is responsible for issuing the tax form. The ADG advises that Arizonans keep accurate records of any winnings from all gambling activities throughout the year to avoid any confusion during tax season. It is further recommended that Arizonans consult a tax professional if they have any questions about income reporting requirements to ensure they file an accurate tax return.

To help ensure Arizonans are aware of common tax scams, the ADG advises Arizonans to review the following links and articles on the IRS website discussing common tax scams for 2025:

1. As stated on the IRS website (IRS.gov), the IRS will make initial contact with a taxpayer through a letter sent via the United States Postal Service. Be wary of anyone purporting to be the IRS or ADG contacting you by phone, email, or social media requesting personal or financial information.

2. If you receive a letter from someone purporting to be the IRS, you can verify that the letter is legitimate through the IRS website (IRS.gov).

3. Dirty Dozen tax scams for 2025: IRS warns taxpayers to watch out for the following dangerous threats (link for reference: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/dirty-dozen-tax-scams-for-2025irs-warns-taxpayers-to-watch-out-for-dangerous-threats).

4. What to Do If You Encounter Fraud or Identity Theft:

If you believe you or someone you know has been targeted by fraudulent payors or individuals purporting to be the IRS, file a consumer complaint by visiting azag.gov/consumer. You can also find the contact information for the Arizona Attorney General’s Office below:

● Phoenix: (602) 542-5763

● Tucson: (520) 628-6648

If you suspect identity theft, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”). For help in English, go to IdentityTheft.gov and for help in Spanish, go to RobodeIdentidad.gov.

For more information, check out the Department’s related news releases from this past year on their website gaming.az.gov/ about/media-room.

ADG takes complaints about illegal gambling seriously. To report suspected illegal gambling activity, visit their website at gaming.az.gov/about/contact-us, call (602) 255-3886, or email publicaffairs@azgaming.gov. You can remain anonymous. $

About ADG: Established by the Arizona State Legislature in 1995, ADG is the state regulatory agency for tribal gaming, event wagering & fantasy sports contests, racing and pari-mutuel/simulcast wagering, and unarmed combat sports. Chairman Honors Native Women At Annual Recognition Luncheon

Ernie Stevens Jr., Chairman of the Indian Gaming Association (IGA), and IGA Vice-Chairman David Bean participated in the 29th Annual National Indian Women’s “Supporting Each Other” Luncheon. This significant event was held with the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Executive Council Winter Summit at the Westin Hotel on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. This year, the luncheon honored two esteemed leaders: Delores Pigsley, Chairwoman of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, and Tracy Stanhoff, former Chairwoman of the Prairie Band of Potawatomi Nation. IGA ViceChairman David Bean joined Chairman Stevens in presenting the honorees with floral tributes that reflected the community's deep respect and admiration.

Chairwoman Pigsley devoted over four decades to serving on the Siletz Tribal Council, including extensive years as chair. Elected to the council in 1975, she played a pivotal role in the Tribe's journey to regain federal recognition. Her efforts culminated in 1977, when she and other Tribal leaders successfully convinced Congress to pass legislation restoring the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians an event the tribe referred to as "Restoration," signifying the U.S. government's recognition of them as an independent nation.

Tracy Stanhoff, former Tribal Chair of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and founder of AD PRO, has dedicated over 30 years to providing comprehensive advertising, graphic design, and branding services. She tirelessly champions Native American businesses as the president of both the American Indian National Chamber of Commerce (AINCC) and the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of California.

YESCO Completes New Signage For Talking Stick Resort In Scottsdale

YESCO, the 105-year-old company known for creating, repairing and maintaining internationally recognizable signs, announces it has completed new interior fine pixel pitch displays for Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. The project included installing 54 brilliant individual displays across the property, totaling 335 million pixels.

A centerpiece of the installation is the showroom’s 15-by-32foot 1.5mm display, engineered to be lowered and raised with a hoist system to accommodate live performances. YESCO’s precise installation ensured the display was perfectly centered between columns with only an inch of clearance on each side. This display is part of a continuous wraparound array of screens designed to allow viewers to track all live sporting events within one field of view. The poker room now features 26 displays, including an arena-like center-hung display, all utilizing 1.5mm flip-chip technology and enhanced durability. The vestibule entryways to the poker room boast three massive 17-by-21-foot displays with 8K-equivalent resolution and ultra-smooth surfaces designed to display immersive designs. In the bar area, YESCO helped design, fabricate, and install double-sided hanging ribbons with 1.6mm curved technology consistent with the geometry of the architecture in the gaming floor. The real showpiece is the 8-sided inset custom soffit bar display field-fitted and trimmed by YESCO’s meticulous installers. Enhancing the space’s aesthetic appeal is a 36-inch vertical column with unmistakable “fit n finish” and custom theatrical content creation that can transport the audience into a variety of environments. Also, included in the installation were two 17-by-6-foot pedestrian level displays on the east and west parking garages. For over 10 weeks, YESCO’s installation team worked six days a week to complete this ambitious project for Talking Stick Resort. $

JACKPOT! NOW MY FREE PLAY WENT DOWN!

What The H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks Happened?

Hi fans! I couldn't resist printing this email from our fan Chris S. who wanted to share a really exciting jackpot, only to be kicked in the teeth later.

I am a steady gambler going 2-3 times a month to the same casino. Finally, I hit a jackpot for $13,323 on the first of the month. However, by the next month my comps and free play were reduced. Is this common with the casinos? If it is, I think it's a bad practice & very unfair to loyal gamblers. I read your magazine every month and enjoy all the stories & tips you suggest. Keep up the good work.

The short answer is yes, your win might have had an effect on your free play and comps – unfortunately. And, yes, that is completely unfair.

I was once told that the scooter I reserved for my father (which was normally comped) would not be comped at the end of my trip because “I was ahead.” By the way, my host looked at my carded play and didn’t consider the play on the cards of my dad, mom and husband. Nice! Thank you so much after two decades of top-tier play on all four cards, year-after-year!

For decades, the casino industry always looked at net theoretical win when setting up promotions, free play, comped food, free rooms and so on. To elaborate, net theoretical win (“Net Theo” for short) is how much money the casino, on average, over the long run, will earn off an individual customer’s play.

For example, if one dollar wagered at your favorite casino equals one point towards the loyalty program and you earn 10,000 points across several hours of play on one day, we can figure out the Net Theo. The casino knows you were playing a penny slot with a hold percentage of, let’s say, 10%. So, across that session of 10,000 points, the slot had $10,000 worth of wagers placed. The Net Theo is 10% of those $10,000 or $1,000. That’s the casino’s theoretical win, not their actual win. There’s a difference between the two I’ll address later.

Given most casinos comp back to players at a rate of 2% of Net Theo, you as a player should receive no more than 2% of $1,000 or $20 in a combination of free play, food, rooms and so on. That’s based on conversations with some Marketing Directors.

Did the casino actually take $1,000 from you during your session? Maybe, maybe not. You may have walked in with $500,

played 10,000 points and walked away a loser. Maybe you walked away even after 10,000 points or, hopefully, you walked away with $1,000 after earning 10,000 points! Net Theo doesn’t care. You are a $1,000 player, on average, over the long run.

If a casino starts looking at actual wins and losses, good, more power to them and us! At least we know where we, as customers, stand! If we walk in with $1,000, make 10,000 points, we know we’ll get our $20 back, somehow. If $100 makes 10,000 points, we’ll get $2 back. A $10,000 bankroll and 10,000 points will get us $200 back. Walking away up or even, will get us nothing back. Thank you! At least it will be clear; money talks and points don’t matter.

I highly recommend you ask the casino you have been loyal to for many years exactly how they are currently evaluating your play. Theoretical, actual, or (and this would be the worst outcome) a mix. Did that jackpot affect the offers or not? Ask them! But, I’m not sure how much you’ll actually learn from the conversation. Most casinos are intentionally vague about how comps, free play, gifts, free rooms and so on are calculated. I think they don’t want to give away their “secret sauce” of the loyalty program. The thinking is customers can’t shop around? Customers won’t get upset if they are left in the dark? Transparency is a bad thing? My credit card is very straightforward 2% cash back on purchases and 5% during promotional periods. After two and a half decades in the casino industry, I still don’t get it. So, as always, if a casino executive wants to comment, even anonymously, I welcome the feedback.

If a casino is using a mix of theoretical and actual to evaluate players, especially if on one trip the individual is ahead, they are following a recipe for disaster with that customer, and all the other customers they have. When I win, I’m punished. That’s the message. When I lose or I’m even, it’s about how many points I generated, not about how much I lost. That’s the message too. But no one puts it in writing aside from the more points you make, the higher up in the loyalty program you progress which unlocks more benefits. So, I’m not sure what to think, yet I’m a really loyal customer with consistent play month after month as Chris S. points out for us. Confused? Chris S. is and so am I. I’ll let you know what feedback we get from our contacts at the casinos. Stay tuned. $

Jokes & Quotes

Research shows that laughing stimulates the immune system and may help prevent or reverse some medical conditions.

I recently drove up to a popular car wash with multiple locations in the Phoenix Area. Much to my chagrin, a disheveled young soul in company clothing with his ID clipped to the brim of his ballcap approached me and tried to unfreeze the screen controlling the wash options and payment.

In full on surfer he said to me, “Dude, take it easy on me here please. If this gets stuck, sometimes it takes a half an hour to reboot.” OK. No big deal, I thought. Right? So I said, “Let me just back up and pull into another lane.” To which the attendant replied, “Cool, man.”

Once at the other terminal, while finishing my transaction, surfer worker said, “Thanks for being so cool, dude. My manager went home to take a nap and the other guy just walked away a while ago. He hasn’t come back and it’s been a few hours. I’m the only one here.”

My reply, “Call your manager and tell him you are out of soap and water. That should get him back here pretty quick!” Surfer kid couldn’t stop laughing. (True Story)
