2023 EMS ODYSSEY

PRESENTER DESCRIPTIONS, BIOS, AND CONTACT INFORMATION

In Order of Conference Appearance

The First 3-5 Minutes: Making Accurate Triage Decision

This presentation will focus on how to make accurate decisions during the initial triage process. Although the prehospital environment and the emergency department are not the same, the commonalities between these two environments are significant in the initial decision-making process. Special populations require special consideration when making decisions during the triage process; triage of children and older adults will also be discussed.

Deb Jeffries

MSN, RN, CEN, CPEN, TCRN, FAENS Deb.Jeffries@ena.org

Deb Jeffries, RN has been an emergency nurse since 1983 and has her CEN, CPEN, and TCRN board certifications and is a Fellow in the Academy of Emergency Nursing. She is published in textbooks and peer reviewed journals in various areas of emergency nursing and presented in state and national conferences. Deb is a course director and faculty for Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) and the Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC).

Identifying Red Flags for Child Maltreatment when Chaos Reigns

Child maltreatment is often challenging to identify as we rely heavily on the history provided by the caregivers as many times the child cannot tell us what has happened. Identification of the red flags of abuse allows a more appropriate response by the medical team and early intervention.

This presentation will discuss the risk factors, physical findings, and essentials of identifying child abuse as well as the essential role of those in first contact with the victim and their caregivers. Those first contacts can provide vital information to the case and help ensure the children get the appropriate evaluation and care. As mandatory reporters we need to be aware of our biases and assumptions which can affect our ability to be objective in our evaluations.

Julie Baumgarth

MSN, ACPNP-AC, SANE-A, SANE-P jbaumgarth@phoenixchildrens.com

Julie Baumgarth, RN earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Louis University in 1996 and began working in pediatrics. Julie has worked in various roles as an RN before moving to the Child Protection Team at Phoenix Children's Hospital in 2014. At that time, Julie realized her passion for the world of forensics and earned her MSN in pediatric acute care in 2016. Julie is certified with the International Association of Forensic Nursing in both pediatric and adults as a sexual assault nurse examiner. Julie enjoys working with the families, other medical providers, as well as community partners on these challenging cases. Julie is often asked why she does this work – because she believes that she is seeing these children on one of the worst days of their lives and hopefully has a role in making things better for them in the future.

Pediatric Firearm Injuries: You will Shoot Your Eye Out Kid!

Pediatric firearm injuries are inherently tragic. They cost life and limb for many young people each year, and lead to emotional and psychological impacts in the survivors.

In this presentation, you will learn about the scope and impact of pediatric firearm injuries. It will address the principles of prehospital management of pediatric firearm injuries. Options for primary prevention and avoidance of pediatric firearm injuries will be discussed.

Partnering with Fire and Emergency Medical Services to Prevent Falls

Emergency medical services (EMS) lift-assists are costly and can divert care away from calls that require attention and transport to care. As trusted sources of information, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) can play a significant role in engaging and educating older adults on services available in the community before and after a fall. This presentation will cover strategies that can be implemented and identify local, state, and national resources to help reduce the number of fall related injuries and lift assist calls.

About AEMS As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, AEMS is a community-based, volunteer organization dedicated to improving emergency medical services (EMS) and trauma care for the Central Arizona Region (which includes Maricopa, Pinal, and Gila counties).

Our Mission AEMS shall facilitate continuous improvement of the diverse components of Emergency Medical Services for the Central Arizona Region, through an inclusive, collaborative, patient-focused, and comprehensive approach, to meet the changing needs of the System and the community.

Collaboration This word best exemplifies what AEMS represents Since 1975, AEMS has been bringing together physicians, nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and hospital administrators, and other healthcare professionals to ensure that emergency medical care is delivered in a coordinated manner, and moreover, that it is meeting the needs of the public. The support of these professionals, working together inclusively, harmoniously, and productively to support the AEMS’ mission, remains an integral part of our success.

Central Arizona Region Agent On behalf of the State of Arizona, Arizona Department of Health Services, AEMS serves as the Regional Emergency Medical Services Coordinating System for the Central Arizona Region.
